HANS ANDERSEN'S FAIRY TALES
|
London Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd. - 4to, pp. 140. With a full colour frontispiece, and eleven full colour, full page, plates, printed on coated stock. No date of publication shown, but COPAC suggests 1914. Attwell (1879-1964) has a nice little write-up in the DNB, which gives 1913 as the date of first publication of this title. (Tuck had previously published this title in 1908, but without the charming Attwell illustrations). The book contains a brief life of Andersen, and eleven of his most famous stories. The front board is very slightly bowed. The board edges show wear, especially at corners, and there is light overall soiling, although the glazed pictorial front cover is clean and bright. Cloth spine shows light bumping at ends. Binding slightly weakened but contents still tight, and very clean - no markings from any former owner. All plates present where called for and in excellent condition. A nice copy in good plus condition. Illustrated by colour illustrations. Binding is hb. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Carosio, Ermenegildo.
Futurismo valzer. [Valse futurista.] (“Il Pianoforte.” Anno XVI, domenica 5 luglio 1914 [arretrato dopo il 1º agosto 1914].)
|
Torino (G. Gori), 1914. (8)pp. Folio. Dec. wraps., printed in pink and black. A spoof by the Piedmontese Ermenegildo Carosio (Alessandria 1866 - Torino 1928), conductor, mandolinist, composer of musical plays and dances and an operetta, and author of more than 200 published songs, remembered particularly for his ragtime compositions, including “Spaghetti Rag,” “Flirtation Rag,” and “Detective Rag.” So far as we can determine, this musical piece, which is without lyrics, has not entered the literature on Futurism. The comical cover design features a crocodile and ghost flying through a crazy landscape, while an arabesque couple cavort in the ether; the letters of the title are partly made up of forks, knives, and potlids. A little marginal wear, partly split at backstrip.

Baud-Bovy, Auguste
Vingt Oeuvres Du Peintre Baud-Bovy (1848-1899)
|
- 20 fine black and white Engravings of works by the nineteenth century Swiss artist, Auguste Baud-Bovy. Each work is presented in duplicate (40 engravings in all). Each is stamped "B 92 BAU" on lower rear corner. Plates are loose in hardcover portfolio. No publisher or date information survives other than a small Ecole des Beaux Arts library label dated Dec.1914 affixed to the inside front board of the portfolio. All engravings are clean and bright. Edges are rubbed and worn, but margins are generous and wear does not come at all close to image areas. There is a light crease to Plate 2 that touches the art, but should smooth out once framed. One plate has a soil mark about 2" below the image area. About half of the identifying tissues are missing, most of the rest are edgeworn . Works, primarily beautifully detailed, dramatically lighted Alpine scenes, include "L'Homme a la toque" (a portrait of the artist); "Bergers s'exercant a la lutte"; "Le soir"; "Lioba!"; "La cime"'; La descente du bois"; "Solitude"; "Serenite"; "La montagne"; "La source du torrent." The portfolio, gray cloth over boards, titled in black on front board is lightly worn, front board lightly foxed. The portfolio does not tie or clasp shut. A magnificent set, very suitable for framing. Portfolio size: 15-1/2 x 20-1/2". Image areas vary from 5 x 6" to approximately 8-1/2 x 12". [Attributes: Hard Cover]
