Wien 1889 19.05.2008 verwandte Themen : Türkei Europa Ethnologie Geschichte Geographie 19.

"An Envoy Extraordinaire"
King Squash of Toadyland
|
An uncommon book. This undated copy is clearly and early printing. The lilac-blue cloth binding has black lettering and an embossed floral design front and back. The binding is sound but does have some soiling, and the corners are bumped. There is a name and date in pencil to the front free end paper, and another name to the title page, and the pages are lightly aged. The edges are rough cut. [Publisher: Field and Tuer]

Police!

Field & Tuer, The Leadenhall Pre, 1889. Hardcover. Acceptable. Main flaw to book is that cloth along front edge of backstrip is torn almost its entire length. In addition, the backstrip is torn across. No cloth loss to horizontal tear, minimal loss to long vertical tear. Front hinge repaired. Text is clean. Best part of this book is that it is stamped a few times by previous owners: "The Institute of Journalists, Central Office: 78, Fleet Street, London, E.C." The real deal.

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1889 Later printing of the revised edition. Octavo, pp. [i-iii] iv-v [vi-vii] viii-xiii [xiv-xv] xvi [1] 2-430 [431-432: ads], publisher's ads printed on endpapers, half-leather, all edges stained red, covered with homemade paper dust wrapper. Formerly, H. P. Lovecraft's copy with his library number "16:21/223" in his hand at upper left corner of the title page, and with his signature and address (598 Angell St., Providence) on verso of front free endpaper; also signed in upper and lower caps on recto of the front free endpaper. HPL's knowledge of Latin was rudimentary, enough to add color to a story or letter; what he knew he probably learned here. Not in Joshi, Lovecraft's Library: A Catalogue, Revised & Enlarged (2002). Lindsay, Margaret Isabella
The Lindsays of America. A genealogical narrative and family record. Beginning with the family of the earliest settler in the mother state, Va., and including in an appendix all the Lindsays in America
|
Self-Published (Joel Munskell's Sons, Publishers), Albany, NY 1889 - Clay-brown cloth, partially soiled, no lettering to covers or spine (as printed). Former ownership name and other information given (Joseph Ira Lindsay, MD 1946/Grafton Mass. Born in Worcester/Mass. Sept. 21 1863). Front hinge a bit tender, but still a well bound, back hinge is fine; overall a clean, unmarked copy. With this book is a booklet of "The Lindsay Family Association of America" and is the Second Annual Report, from 1907. Stored in this booklet are newspaper clippings from the mid 19th century from Britain pertaining to "Dukedom of Montrose" and other clippings related to the House of Lords. The booklet is complete in itself, but apparently has a running pagination with other in a series, with the pages running 17 to 34, and is American in origin. Also included is a armorial crest from a box top (playing cards?). Finally, a leaf laid-in the book, with a covering indicating "The enclosed engraving is guaranteed an original print of the year 1813, it is not a copy or reproduction. Martin & Allardyce, Asbury Park NJ." The print is that of the armorial design of the Lindsay clan, somewhat discolored/damp stained and pasted to the paper, not the page, but very nice. The spine has two raised bands, bright blind-stamped gilt lettering and rules. Spine color has changed to more green than blue. Both covers also have blind-stamped, bright gilt rules and a small, decorative motif in two corners. T.e.g. End papers are gold silk. "C.M. Ullman" is blind-stamped in the leather border on the inside rear cover. Volume is enclosed in a custom slip-case with the spine edges of the same leather (or goatskin) as the binding. This too has changed from blue to green and is slightly edge-worn. Slipcase construction is paper-over-board. The paper is a brick red color with the look of linen. Slipcase has a very soft, flannel, inner lining. Text consists of the reiminiscences of the actor Lester Wallack. The last of these has completely torn apart at one fold. Internally as new except that the broadsides have age-darkened to varying degrees. A real collector's item for the theater buff. Nyomatott Veres Samuelnel, Temesvarott, Hungary 1889 - FULL TITLE AND DESCRIPTION: Loewy, Moritz: Gyaszbeszed bold. emlek. Rudolf tronorokos foherczeg o cs.es kir. feensege : folott a Temesvar izraelita hitkoszeg zsinagogajaban 1889, februar ho 11-en tartott unnepelyes gyaszistentisztelet Temesvarott: Nyomatott Veres Samuelnel, 1889. 16 pp; 135:205 mm; Hungarian with Hebrew quotes. Pamphlet; good condition; no binding. ABSTRACT: Eulogy on the Austrian Crown Prince Rudolf (1853-1889) by Rabbi Moritz Loewy in the synagogue in Temesvar on February 11, 1889. The Archduke Rudolf, Crown Prince of Austria, Hungary and Bohemia (21 August 1858 - 30 January 1889) was the son and heir of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. His death, apparently through suicide, along with that of his mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera, at his Mayerling hunting lodge in 1889 made international headlines, fueled international conspiracy rumors and ultimately may have sealed the long-term fate of the Habsburg monarchy. The reform rabbi Moritz Löwy became rabbi of Temesvar in the mid-1860ties. Since 1860, however, internal dissensions had divided the community into factions, with the Reform rabbi, Moritz Löwy, at the head of the one in the city, and the Orthodox rabbi, Jakob Singer, leading that in the citadel Timi¿oara or Temesvár, is a city in the Banat, Transylvania, today West Romania. Between 1552 and 1716 it was an important center of the Turkish administration; subsequently within Austria-Hungary until 1918. When under direct Austrian rule the situation of the Jews in Temesvár was more difficult than in any other part of Hungary. Maria Theresia¿s Jewish legislation (Judenordnung) of 1776 for Jews in the Banat region placed many restrictions on the Jews of Temesvár. Only forty-nine were permitted to reside in the city. It was not until the reign of Joseph II. (1780-90) that the condition of the Jews of Temesvar began to improve. The earliest Jewish census at Temesvar was taken in 1739, when there were 139 Ashkenazim and 81 Sephardim (46 families altogether). In 1755 there were 23 Jewish families in the city; 72 in 1781. In 1840 the Jewish population of the city was about 1,200. In 1858 the number was 2,202; in 1890,4,870; and in 1901, 5,788 (including Jewish soldiers, 5,916). The total population of Temesvar around 1900 was 53,033. SOURCES: EJ; JE. LIBRARY COPIES: No copies listed in major library catalogs [Attributes: First Edition]
