[Primarily at sea]. 1872-1873. 33pp. Quarto. Contemporary three-quarter imitation morocco and pebbled cloth, gilt on cover. Very good. Journal and log of the H.M.S. Vulture, launched in 1869 and commissioned February 15, 1872. The first half of the journal is printed in columns, to be filled in, with a printed titlepage. An inscription on the titlepage indicates that the log was kept by F.H. Henderson, from February 1872 to January 1873. Henderson has filled in the columns for Wind and Weather, Barometer, Thermometer, Bearing and Distance, and made notes as to Course and Distance, and Latitude and Longitude. He also notes when the ship is at anchor and where she is bound. In the second half of the volume, which is comprised of blank ruled pages, Henderson has kept a daily account of events aboard ship, which travels from Sheerness to Malta and on to the Suez Canal. Of note in his prose log, Henderson indicates that while anchored in Port Said, Egypt, they encounter a French transport carrying "Communist prisoners...being conveyed to New Caledonia;" they are also in harbor with an Egyptian frigate carrying pilgrims from Mecca. He writes that "the stink that comes from these fellows is something awful, they are horribly crowded, and beastly dirty, a decent [illegible] steamer will carry 1500 of these wretches." There are also thirteen additional pages of material related to the H.M.S. Sappho's journey from Sydney to Hobart Town in Tasmania and back again. These entries are dated November 1876 through January 1877, also written in Henderson's hand.

Carnets, notes et croquis de l'auteur furent recueillis après sa mort près de Luang-Parbang, au Laos, et publiés pour la 1ère fois dans le Tour du Monde, ce qui assura une immense publicité des sites archéologiques d'Angkor auprès des lecteurs Européens. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1872. 2 volumes. First edition. In a rare unrecorded state of the cloth binding. With the large folding map, 27 plates (11 folding), and 28 illustrations in the text. 8vo, mustard cloth with ruled and decorated in black and blind on spine and covers, spines lettered in black. [xx], 360; [viii], 400. A unusually nice and bright set, hinges tight and strong with much less than the usual wear to the original cloth bindings. Half title in Volume I cut.. Penzer notes three states of the binding, but none match the binding on this copy, which has a ruled border and fancy border on the upper covers in black, on the lower covers in blind, and no lettering on the covers. A miscellany of information about unknown regions of Syria compiled during several months wanderings in the deserts. Burton and his wife were station at Damascus; Charles Tyrwhitt-Drake and Edward Henry Palmer, who were working under the auspices of the Palestinian Exploration Fund, did a bit of exploring on their own and happened to meet up with Burton in Damascus. Edward Rice, in his biography of Burton, strongly suspects that the meeting was not just happenstance, and that the pair, if not the three, were following some secret anti-Turkish mission. Palmer and Drake departed Damascus in 1870, though Drake remained in the middle east, travelling, exploring, and mapping. Shortly thereafter he returned to Blud‡n to collaborate with Burton on this book. Complete copies are scarce, and needless to say copies in original cloth are especially scarce as well.

Original photographic class album, for 1872 senior class of Union College, in Schenectady, New York. . Large quarto, original dark red morocco, stamped in gilt on spine, in six compartments ("Album. Sen. Class, '72. Union College."), stamped in gilt at base of spine ("Churchill Photo, Albany, N.Y."), stamped in gilt on front cover ("G. H. Lyon") [George H. Lyon is a member of the class, and his photograph is included in the album], 74 stiff card leaves, illustrated with seventy-four(74) original photographs (full-page albumen prints, mounted on rectos only), all edges gilt. The subjects of the seventy-four photographs include: the college grounds and buildings, faculty, staff, and 24 members of the class. Most of the photographs are signed, by the subjects, below their portraits (several are also inscribed briefly, with sentiments or locations). Two of the more notable subjects are D. S. Lamont, who served as Secretary of War under President Cleveland, and Howard Thornton, who was a member of the New York State Assembly. Very light fading on spine, extremities are rubbed, with light wear at spine tips and corners, outer hinge of spine and front cover has just begun to split (but is completely intact), else very good, with the photographs fresh and bright. Laid into the book is an original programme for "Resurrection of the Trustees of Union College, on Friday Night, Oct. 20, 1871." Single sheet, folded to make 4 (8vo) pages; very good condition. Prints the lyrics to "Song of Old Union" by Fitz Hugh Ludlow, and "Song" by C. E. Rounds. A scarce publication, with seventy-four albumen prints, including architectural photographs and portraits.

(1) x (preface) + 16 pp. (1, blank), 8 pp. of advertisments for Whitman's books (including a nearly four-page summary and commentary on "Leaves of Grass"), (2). Very scarce Whitman item. The title poem was delivered by Whitman as the Annual Commencemnet Poem at Dartmouth on June 26, 1872 at the invitation of their Public Literary Societies. Also appearing in this volume are "The Mystic Trumpeter", "O Star of France! 1870-71"; "Virginia--The West"; and "By Broad Potomac's Shore". Described in the advertisment (probably by Whitman himself) as "These--the poems of the author's elder age--are the surplusage of Leaves of Grass--the wake following that volume, as the eddies behind a ship." A tight, very good example, gilt lettering bright, shallow loss at vthe spine extremities, light tidemarking along the outer edges of the leaves. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

EARLY PRINTING of Mendeleev’s periodic table, first published in 1871, with predictions of missing elements. “Mendeleev was apparently preoccupied with examining the properties of the known elements,” which he arranged on sets of cards until he came up with a table listing them in vertical columns, published in 1869. Though this attempt was on the right track, it still contained several errors. Mendeleev published “a much improved table two years later” with the elements lined up in horizontal columns (Ihde pp. 245-6). This table led to the widespread acceptance of periodic law. “Mendeléef’s great merit as a discoverer lay in the boldness with which he asserted that the atomic weights of certain elements which did not fit into his system had been incorrectly determined, and that new elements would someday be discovered to fit in the vacant spaces in the periodic table” (Weeks p. 393). The publication of Mendeleev in 1871 “attracted very little interest…[it] was too long to read comfortably and contained too much detail” (Partington p. 896) However, “interest in the periodic table was aroused when Mendeléef’s predictions of missing elements, with details of their expected properties, were confirmed by their discovery” (897). She believes she has found it in her marriage to Edward Casaubon, an elderly pedant who is devoted to the immense task of writing a 'Key to all the Mythologies'. She is rapidly disillusioned; he spends their honeymoon on tireless research...</?ms_indent></p> <p>Part of the novel also follows Tertius Lydgate,</p> <p><?ms_indent>the ambitious doctor who yearns for scientific discovery and who strives... for reforms in medical practice. He falls in love with Rosamund Vincy, and discovers too late that his wife is interested in nothing but the effect her person makes...</?ms_indent></p> <p>MIDDLEMARCH is often considered George Eliot's greatest achievement:</p> <p><?ms_indent>The canvas is broad, and the characters numerous; the novel is one of the finest in the language and George Eliot's greatest work. Her control of the manifold strands of her story never weakens and neither does her obervation of a provincial town. She knew that sort of world intimately... [all quotes from CGEL]</?ms_indent></p> <p>The novel was initially issued serially, in eight wrappered five-shilling parts (though paginated for its ultimate four-volumes-in-cloth format). Later in the same decade, Anthony Trollope's THE PRIME MINISTER would be similarly issued in 1875-1876, as would be George Eliot's DANIEL DERONDA in 1876. This idea of fewer-but larger (and pricier) serial parts was a last-ditch effort on the part of publishers to rescue the serial parts format, which after the 1870 death of Dickens was now dying itself; the experiment was a complete failure.</p> <p>This four-volume set is still in the original blue cloth decorated in black and gilt, with all of the original chocolate-brown endpapers. Condition is very good: there is some edge-wear but not a lot, and the spines are generally darkened to a deeper shade of blue. Some endpapers are cracked but the volumes have remained quite tight. There has been no restoration or "sophistication" of the volumes. MIDDLEMARCH has become the most difficult of George Eliot's novels to find, especially in original wrappers or cloth (for example, in 1990 Bradley Martin's fine copies of her five other novels sold for between $1,100 and $2,475 each, but his MIDDLEMARCH in four volumes, a bit rubbed itself, fetched $7,700). Die hintere Decke mit 4 Messingbuckeln jeweils in den Ecken. 43 x 31 cm. Aufwendige Ehrenmappe, überreicht zum 50jährigen Bühnenjubiläum der bedeutenden Münchner Schauspielerin Elise Seebach (1806-1878; siehe ausführlich Eisenberg, Biographisches Lexikon der Deutschen Bühne des XIX. Jahrhunderts, p. 952). Unter den Autographen der Ensemblemitglieder befinden sich Ernst Possart (1841-1921, 1897 geadelt, Schauspieler und späterer Generaldirektor und Intendant der königlichen Hoftheater) sowie die Gattin Anna, Angelo Quaglio (1829-1890, Bühnenbildner, bedeutsam für seine Gestaltungen der Wagner-Opern), Sophie Diez (1820-1887; bedeutende Sopranistin), Kaspar Bausewein (1838-1903; Basssänger bei diversen Wagner-Uraufführungen), Friedrich Dahn (1811-1889, Schauspieler und Regisseur, Vater des Schriftstellers Felix Dahn) und Gattin Marie Dahn-Hausmann (1829-1909), Ottilie Ottiker (1850-1921, Sopranistin), Lucile Grahn (1819-1907, bedeutende dänische Ballerina), Josefine Schefzky (1843-1912, Sängerin, die erfolglos Ludwig II. becircte - ließ sich in den Starnberger See fallen um von ihm gerettet zu werden, der dazu aber seinen Adjutanten Krane beauftragte), August Kindermann (1817-1891, sang den Wotan in den Uraufführungen der ersten beiden Opern von Richard Wagners Ring des Nibelungen, sowie den Titurel bei der Uraufführung des Parsifal). - Die Feier des Bühnenjubiläums der Elise Seebach war gleichzeitig ihr Abschied von den Brettern, die die Welt bedeuten; die zeitgenössische Theaterliteratur beschreibt die umfangreichen Feierlichkeiten ausführlich, die mit einem Fest mit den alten Kollegen endeten. Der Regisseure Sigl führte Elise Seebach in den Veranstaltungsraum, es wurde eine bewegte Ansprache gehalten, und "Ein prachtvolles Gedenkbuch mit Namensunterschrift aller Mitglieder, so wie auf einem Sammetkissen eine schwere goldene Kette mit Kreuz überreichend, schloß er mit einem Lebehoch die Feier, für welche Elise Seebach vor Thränen kaum Worte des Dankes finden konnte." (Heinrich`s Deutscher Bühnen-Almanach, Band 37, p. 97). - Die schwere goldene Kette liegt dieser hier vorhandenen Mappe nicht bei, allerdings ein auf Seide gedruckter Theaterzettel zur Aufführung eines Stückes am 18. August 1862 im Residenztheater, mit Fräulein Seebach in der weiblichen Hauptrolle, ist lose einliegend in der Mappe zu finden. - Das hochinteressante Stück zur Münchner Theatergeschichte in schöner Gesamterhaltung!
