YULE, Henry.
A NARRATIVE OF THE MISSION SENT BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF INDIATO THE COURT OF AVA IN 1855, WITH NOTICES OF THE COUNTRY, GOVERNMENT, AND PEOPLE.
A SUPERB & EARLY ILLUSTRATED RESOURCE ON THE BURMESE EMPIRE London 1858, Smith. Blue goat, gold decorations, 391p., map, 29 lithos, hand-colored frontis & sepia litho plates, 3 maps +a 67 x 93 cm. folding pocket map, 13 appendices, dictionary glossary, 21 x 28 cm., sharp, 21 x 28 cm. FIRST EDITION RARE A most important and classic primary book by a British Royal engineer and Public Works Department official of the British government. Sir Henry Yule [1820-1889] was appointed as sec- retary to the mission, which was led by Sir Athur Payre. The diplomatic mission was sent to repair poor relations with the Burmese King and his government, after the disastrous Anglo-Burmese wars. The British goal was to attempt to gain a treaty, and spoils of that war. The mission did result in Britain taking over lower Burma as its prize! * This work is perhaps Yule's best and most comprehensive book on the Burma, the Burmese people, their customs, religion [Buddhism], their great cities, with excellent coverage of Pagan. The lithographic illustrations to a great extent were actually sketched and drawn by Yule himself. They are quite handsome, and some are stunningly hand-colored; others were exectued by Colesworthy Grand an artist, and photographs by Linneaus Tripe. * CHAPTER HEADINGS: Chapter headings are: Journal of the Mission from the Brit- ish frontier to Pagan-myo; The remains at Pagan;Journal from Pagan to the capital; Our residence at the capital; The city of Amarapoora; Excursions in the environs of the capital; Return of the mission from the capital to Rangoon; notes on the intercourse of the Burmese countries with Western nat- ions up to the peace of Yandabo; Notices of the history of Burma from the peace of Yandabo [1826] to the revolution of 1853; Some account of the religion of the Burmese; The mini- sters of state-military affairs-revenues & currency; On the map of Burma-descriptive geography-and population; The Shan states tributary to Burma. * LITHOGRAPHIC ILLUSTRATIONS: The work is lavishly illustrated with 29 superb plates, a few are lacking plate numbers or out of sequence, but comp- lete. The fine plates show excellent examples of elephants, pagodas, temples, Burmese, and unusual hairy-faced woman [perhaps thought perhaps to be half ape-human ?]. With an especially nice hand-colored view of the members of the mission at an audience hall and recption of the envoy; they are seated on the floor, while two Burmese officials are on their bellies prostrate on the floor with hands together in the "prayer" Mudra showing respect to the two royal persons seated upon a high lotus throne; who look like the King and Queen. A good number of the lithographic plates do show "Capt'n Yule" in the lower corner. Several are delicately hand-colored with great skill. * Yule was the 1872 Founder's Medal recipient, "For eminent services to Geography". And also was awarded the Patron's Medal - Robert B. Shaw: "For journeys in Eastern Turkistan, and for his extensive astronomical & hypsometrical observat- ions." In 1889 Colonel Sir Henry Yule was awarded the KCII CBHe; and also received for distinguished service to the Society, to Geography in Scotland, or to public life in Scotland related to the Society. * A truly lovely and magnificent early primary source on Burma, beautifully illustrated. * WITH 13 APPENDICIES: A. Notes on the geological features of the banks of the Irawadi, and of the country North of Amarapoora. B. From appendix b. to the Ms. Journal of Major H. Burney, resident at Ava, accompanying a letter dated 11th September, 1830, in the Foreign Office, Calcutta. C. Translation of the Burmese Hymn chanted by the Brahmins. D. Letter from the Governor-General to the King of Ava. E. The King's letter to the Governor-General. F. On the plan of Burmese Monasteries. G. On the sources of the Irawadi. H. Detail of imports & exports. I. Specimens of the reigning King's edicts. J. Specimen of a Burmese drama [Major Phayre]. K. The mission of Gerare Van Wustohof to the King of the Laos. L. Note on the Affinities of the Indian and Burmese styles of architecture by James Furgusson, Esq. M. On the languages spoken in Burma and the adjacent countries [a large folding chart]. * THE FOLDING MAP: Title:THIS NEW MAP OF BURNA & THE REGIONS ADJACENT; IS INSCRIBED TO SIR RODERICK I. MURCHISON, P.R.G.S. &C...London 1857. It was executed by Yule, and shows the Himalayan Mountains and Mishmeeg at about ca. 28 degrees North at the top, down to 13 degrees at the bottom showing the Gt. Andaman Island and Tenasserim after which is Bangkok and the Gulf of Siam. A portion of China & Yunnan are to the far Eastern area. The map folds down to ca. 16 x 24.5 cm., and has some archival clear type tape on the tender folds and joints, as well as some old paper backing on one fold; A key is shown in the left lower corner, with a note: Names of the tribes in red, which refers to the various tribes sprinkled throughout the map shown in red. Price, William Lake (1810-1896)
E. M. Ward
. London: Published by Lloyd Brothers & Co., circa 1858. Albumen photograph mounted on card as issued. Very good condition apart from some light soiling in the margins. 13 5/8 x 9 1/4 inches. 19 1/4 x 14 3/16 inches. A stunning image from the series "Portraits of Eminent British Artists" by one of the leading figures of early Victorian photography. This beautiful photograph depicts the renowned British historical painter Edward Matthew Ward (1816-1879) during the height of his popularity. Born in London, Ward initially studied oil painting in the Covent Garden studio of John Cawse (1779-1862) before entering the Royal Academy schools in 1835. In order to hone further his artistic skills, he ventured to Venice and Paris in 1836 and finally settled Rome, where he sketched antiquities and worked in the studio of the classical painter and Director of the prestigious St. Luke Academy, Cavaliere Filippo Agricola. In 1839, Ward exhibited what was to be the first of many well-received paintings at the Royal Academy, which later elected him an academician in 1855. His historical paintings, the majority of which depict scenes from 17th-and 18th-century English and French history and social life, were enormously popular, and he also executed several notable frescoes for the hallway of the House of Commons and designed a number of hunting cartoons for Christopher Sykes in 1877. An architectural and topographical artist by training, William Lake Price was an innovator in the field of mid-nineteenth century photography, who revolutionized the combination printing technique. He was a pupil of the eminent architect Augustus Charles Pugin (1762-1832) and frequently exhibited his paintings and watercolours at the Royal Academy and Old Watercolour Society before taking up photography in 1854. He also published a number of illustrated books such as Interiors and Exteriors in Venice (1843). Despite his success as a painter, Price began to avidly pursue his interest in photography in the mid-1850s and joined the London Photographic Society and Photographic Exchange Club of London. He became active in the field during a key period in the evolution of British photography, which was still a relatively new science, into a commercial art form. He truly exemplified the growing phenomenon of the artist/photographer. His first photographs were primarily genre scenes, one of which appeared in the society's Photographic Album for the Year 1855. He also photographed historical and literary scenes as well as numerous portraits, many of which were published in an ambitious 1858 collection entitled Portraits of Eminent British Artists. That same year, he published Manual of Photographic Manipulation, a practical instructional work most likely intended for the amateur photographer, another recently developed phenomenon made possible by Frederick Scott Archer's introduction of the easily mastered collodion process in 1851. Price's photographic works were well received by the public, and he soon became a chief proponent of the combination printing technique, which he innovatively used to produce stunning compositions. He also experimented with stereoscopic pictures. His photographs can be found today in many collections, including The Cleveland Museum of Art and The Photographic Collection of the Royal Academy of Art, London. Cf. INTERIOR DESIGN) Braund, J. Braund, J. (illus). Engraved by E. Salandri.
Illustrations of Furniture, Candelabra, Musical Instruments from the Great Exhibitions of London & Paris with Examples of Similar Articles from Royal Palaces and Noble Mansions.
      J. Braund. London. 1858. - 48 black and white engraved plates, 18 x 13 inches, plates loose in later portfolio with ties. Foxing to title page and first and last two plates. The rather crude portfolio (brown paper-covered boards) was evidently fashioned when the original binding of the book disintegrated. In general the plates are very bright and clean. A wonderful compendium of elegant and ornate furntiture including a baby's "Cot", bookcases, desks, tables, chimney pieces, beds, sofas, etc. The Description of Plates identifies the date of each piece, what it is made of, its provenance and the exhibition at which it was displayed. There is also a list of Names of Subscribers. The very fine engravings are by E. Salandri after drawings by J. Braund. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

HISTORY OF THE INDIAN MUTINY. Giving a Detailed Account of the Sepoy Insurrection in India; and a Concise History of the Great Military Events Which Have Tended to Consolidate British Empire in Hindostan.
London The London Printing and Publishing Company, Limited ca. 1858 - 2 volumes. Extensively illustrated with steel engraved plates including battle scenes, views of places, portraits and maps, 86 of them in total. 4to, contemporary three-quarter brown morocco over brown cloth boards, the spine with raised bands ruled on each side in gilt, two compartments gilt lettered. vii, 648; viii, 663 pp. Internally a very nice set, the text-blocks quite clean and with much, much less of the foxing or toning associated with the book. The binding is firm and solid but with some light evidence of wear and typical signs of age, the first signature of Vol. I loose with some wear along the outer page edges, minor marginal old staining to the prelims only. SCARCE CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNT of the Indian Mutiny, also called the "War of Independence of 1857" or "First War of Indian Independence". Almost from the moment the first sepoys mutinied in Meerut, the nature and the scope of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 has been contested and argued over. Speaking in the House of Commons in July 1857, Benjamin Disraeli labeled it a 'national revolt' while Lord Palmerston, the Prime Minister, tried to downplay the scope and the significance of the event as a 'mere military mutiny'. Reflecting this debate, historian Charles Ball sided with Prime Minister, using ÒmutinyÓ in his title but within the text he refers to it a 'struggle for liberty and independence as a people.' BallÕs text is extensive and extraordinarily detailed and researched. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

BERTRÁN SOLER, Tomás.
LOS INGLESES TALES [TAL] COMO SON; CARÁCTER, LEYES, USOS Y COSTUMBRES DEL PUEBLO INGLÉS, Y TODAS SUS ESTRAVAGANCIAS.
      - 272 pp. Media piel de época. 21,3x15,3. [HOBSON, Benjamin]
SEI I RYAKU RON: THEORIES OF WESTERN MEDICINE [SURGERY]. Chinese Title: XIYI LUELUN.
AN EARLY JAPANESE TRANSLATION OF A BRITISH PHSICIAN'S BOOK [Kyoto 1858, Tojuen Zoshi]. Stitched yellow wrs., 4 volumes bound in one, very good, reprint of Shanghai 1857 edition, 179 double leaves, 396 fine medical illustrations, woodblock printed on hand made paper, ca. 18 x 26 cm. in cloth case. Hobson [1816-1873] an English physician who practiced in Canton as a medical missionary from 1839 for some twenty years. This was first published in Shanghai in 1857, and was instrumental to introduce formally Western Medicine into China. It was reprinted the next year in Japan. The Jesuits attempted to introduce Western anatomy to Chinese learned circles in the early 17th century but met with no success. Hobson's books were the first Western medical texts to be translated & printed in Chinese. They were widely circulated and accepted in China. The original work "PRACTICE OF SURG- ERY IN THE WEST." A thoroughly complete resource, with a copious index in both English & Chinese which covers: a gen- eral discourse on the healing art, Eastern & Western pract- ice compared, symptoms & diagnosis of disease. Nature & pro- perties of medicines, diet and regimen, causes of diseases, inflammation, suppuration and abscesses, ulceration & ulcers mortification, burns and scalds, wounds: incised, contused, gun-shot and hemorrhage. Aneuryism, tumors, cancer, fever, ague. Diseases of the bones, joints, on fractures, dislocat- ions, wounds of the head & brain, apoplexy & paralysis, in- flammation of the brain, and in children. Injuries to the spinal cord. Diseases of the eye & eyelids, outer ear, nos- trils, mouth & tongue. Wounds of the chest, abdomen, breast, hernia, anus, urinary organs, scrotum hydrocele. Casualties: hanging, drowning & poisoning. Tonics: stimulating tonics, stomachs, general tonics. Depressants: diaphorethics, emet- ics, diureticsasperients, removing blood, water, phlegm. Astringents: restraining, internal secretions, stypties. Diminishing pain, irration, destroying worms, demulcents. External remedies: rubefaciants, counterirritants, cautery, cutting & acupuncture, escharotics, fomentations. Ointments: simple, resin & a host of many others. Pills, powders, inf- usions, tinctures, oils show a very wide variety of choices and varieties. The detailed illustrations show many of the diseases and operations, some use block and tackle to assist in dislocations & resetting of broken bones. There are also some illustrations of medicinal plants & insects, including one of a leech, used to "cleanse" wounds. Also a section devoted to medical instruments are described & illustrated. This work has been cited & its title page illustrated in P. Ho & F. Lisowski: A BRIEF HISTORY OF CHINESE MEDICINE AND ITS INFLUENCE, p.57, figure 14. G. Mestler in his landmark bibliography: A GALAXY OF OLD JAPANESE MEDICAL BOOKS also cites items by Hobson on pp.306, 323 & 127, with substant- ial commentaries on him and his historic translations. The work is written in Chinese, [Kambun to the Japanese] and was most readable by educated Japanese, with the minor addition of grammatical Japanese characters to the original text. Many Chinese texts were brought to Japan and read by this technique. An exceptionally rare example of a most import- important & influential early medical text. With profusely illustrated sections, showing examples & methods of surgery. An historic & valuable medical "FIRST" Western medical book introduced to China. See H. Walravens; CATALOGUE OF CHINESE BOOKS & MANUSCRIPTS IN THE LIBRARY OF THE WELLCOME INSTITUTE FOR THE HISTORY OF MEDICINE, pp.ix, page 1 for related items by Hobson, and other details on Hobson's historic translat- ions into Chinese & Japanese editions as well.
