STOWE, Harriet Beecher
Uncle Tom's Cabin
1852. STOWE, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Negro Life in the Slave States of America. London: C.H. Clarke, 1852. Octavo, original gilt-illustrated blue cloth, all edges gilt. $2000. Early Clarke edition of this influential novel, with 40 illustrations, issued the same year as the first English edition (un-illustrated), also published by Clarke. Uncle Tom's Cabin was immediately successful upon its publication in book form, and publishers in England, where there was a large and vocal anti-slavery contingent, were quick to issue their own editions of the controversial novel. This is an early Clarke printing, issued the same year as the true first English edition, also published by Clarke (sometimes confused with the 1852 Cassell printing with the 27 Cruikshank engravings). This edition contains 380 pages and 40 illustrations, rather than 329 pages in the first un-illustrated Clarke printing. Clarke also produced a 351-page edition with eight engravings and a 380-page edition with 50 engravings, both also in 1852, to say nothing of the dozen or so pirated editions that appeared this same year. "In the emotion-charged atmosphere of mid-19th century America Uncle Tom's Cabin exploded like a bombshell. To those engaged in fighting slavery it appeared as an indictment of all the evils inherent in the system they opposed; to the pro-slavery forces it was a slanderous attack on 'the Southern way of life'! the social impact of [the novel] on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since" (PMM 332). Publisher's ticket on rear endpaper. BAL 19518. See Grolier English 100, 91 and Grolier American 100, 61. A beautiful unrestored copy, with only light rubbing to extremities.

STOWE, Harriet Beecher
Uncle Tom's Cabin
1852. (CRUIKSHANK, George) STOWE, Harriet Beecher. Uncle Tom's Cabin. With Twenty-seven Illustrations on Wood by George Cruikshank. London: John Cassell, 1852. Octavo, mid-20th century full polished red calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, tan morocco spine labels, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. $2500. Second English edition (published the same year as the Boston first edition) of Harriet Beecher Stowe's galvanizing novel of slavery, the first to feature illustrations by celebrated artist George Cruikshank, handsomely bound by Riviere & Son. "The social impact of Uncle Tom's Cabin on the United States was greater than that of any book before or since" (PMM 332). Harriet Beecher Stowe's controversial novel proved immediately successful upon its publication in book form, and publishers in England, aware of the nation's large and vocal anti-slavery contingent, quickly issued their own editions (14 English editions appeared in 1852 alone). This edition, with frontispiece, title page vignette and 27 full-page wood engravings after George Cruikshank, is frequently referred to as the first English edition; however, BAL asserts that the C.H. Clarke edition was advertised as being available in April 1852, while the first part of Cassell's edition was not available until October 1852. Original cloth bound in at rear. See: BAL 19518, Note; Grolier English 100 91; Grolier American 100 61. Cohn 777. Small ink gift inscription. Binding with light sunning to front board. An about-fine copy.

LEAR, Edward (1812-1888).
Journals of a Landscape Painter in Southern Calabria.
London: Richard Bentley, 1852. - Large 8vo., (10 x 6 4/8 inches). Half-title 4-page publisher's advertisement at end (some spotting to preliminaries). Frontispiece map of "Part of the Kingdom of Naples", and 20 tinted lithographic plates, and one engraved map (some mostly marginal spotting). Original blue publisher's cloth decorated in blind (extremities quite rubbed, a few light marks). Provenance: With the contemporary engraved bookplate of Charles C. Perkins on the front paste-down; the early 20th-century presentation inscription to "Mary Cabot Briggs from L.V.B [Lloyd Vernon Briggs (1863-1941)]" dated October 1905. First edition. "In 1847 Lear paid two visits to Naples and Sicily, collecting material for a projected book, "Journals of a Landscape Painter in Southern Calabria, &c." (1852). In these as in others of his journeys he would travel on foot, or on horseback, from first light until it grew dark, stopping to draw wherever he saw suitable scenery and settling down each night to write up his journal. Many of the places he visited were uncharted and scarcely known beyond their own communities, and people who travelled with him have described the discomfort and hardship of the conditions, the primitive food and often disagreeable sleeping places, and how he pushed himself physically so that he could not only cover large distances but also produce the work which was one purpose of his journeys. It was thus that he hoped to reach the more remote and most beautiful places which he wanted to see; for a person who had endured a sickly childhood and who continued to suffer from short sight, from chest infections, and from epilepsy, it was an extraordinary achievement. As Lear went through Calabria he sensed the growing political unrest there, and in April 1848 he decided he must leave Italy" (ONDB).
