Virginia Convention.
Virginia)(Slavery)(WV)(Const) PROCEEDINGS AND DEBATES OF THE VIRGINIA STATE CONVENTION OF 1829 - 30
|
- Richmond, VA, 1830, 919 & errata,pp. Full flamed calf, very attractive, last 4 pp in facs. Bkplt & two inner cancelled lib stamps, no outside marks. "Growing discontent in the western counties of VA resulted in the election in 1829 of a state convention to draft a new constitution. This instrument made few concessions to the westerners. They got some increase in representation in the Assembly, a somewhat broadened suffrage, & curtailment of the Council of State in its membership & powers. The eastern counties were in control. The able debates were interesting, enlivened by the speeches of the brilliant but erratic John Randolph of Roanoke, who, in one, declared Jefferson no authority on anything except, perhaps, plows." Also participating in this convention was Alexander Campbell. Copies sold from here 1989 @ forty five, 1999 @ two twenty five. Copies on net at one thousand and two thousand.

|
London, printed [for private circulation] by J. Moyes. 1830 - First English edition, one of 50 copies. Original green cloth, paper label. 8vo. pp. [4], 120. The translation attributed to Lord George William Russell in a manuscript note in the Library of Congress copy; responsibility, however, more likely lies with Lord John Russell who is credited with the translation in Nicoll's "A History of English Drama". "Caius Gracchus" is one of three tragedies written between 1784-1800 by the Italian poet who is chiefly remembered for his translation of Homer's Iliad. Unopened. Short tear to cloth at foot of spine, otherwise a nice copy in original condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[PEEP SHOW]
Vue Perspective du Tunnel sous La Tamise
|
London: Joseph Robins, [ca. 1830]. First edition. Peep show mounted in original accordion folder (5 3/4 x 8 5/8 inches) that extends to 16 1/2 inches (420 mm.). With an engraved rear plate, and five cutout plates, all of which are hand-colored. #11;#11;Publisher's pink paper over yellow front board with two center cutouts, outer rear board with patterned paper, inner rear board with hand-colored engraved background. The folder comprises the boards and five hand-colored, engraved cutout panels connected top and bottom by bands of accordion pleated paper. Front board with light soiling and minor rubbing. In the original blue paper slipcase, slightly frayed at edges, with two engraved paper title labels. The whole hosed in a full teal morocco pull-off case with gilt spine lettering. An exceptional coy of probably the scarcest Tunnel peep-show.#11;#11;Popular in Western Europe in the mid nineteenth century, "peep shows" (or "tunnel books") were a kind of three-dimensional souvenir made from cutouts linked by accordion-folded paper walls. The compressed structure allows the cutouts to expand, creating an illusion of distance when viewed through the opening in the front board. #11;#11;Vue Perspective du Tunnel sous La Tamise, a remarkably well-preserved peep show probably printed in London in the mid 1830s, represents the Thames Tunnel designed by French engineer Marc Brunel. This particular peep-show has two views; through the lower peep-hole is a view of the interior of the tunnel with carriages and pedestrians and through the upper peep-hole is a view across the Thames with ships and quayside figures.#11;#11;#11;

[Sigue:] THE TRIAL OF THOMAS CLEWES, FOR THE MURDER OF RICHARD HEMMING; together with the arraigment of George Banke, and John Barnett... Imp. T. Eaton. Palau 336103. - Amsterdam, J. H. Tobiäs & M. Westerman & Zoon, 1830. 8vo, Half title, title page with hand-coloured engraving, [10], 190 pp., two large folding plates. Later contemporary style half calf with marbled boards. Spine with 4 raised bands with gilt decorations and letterings. *The first and only edition. Germain Felix Meijlan (1785-1831) headed the VOC factory on the tiny island of Deshima, near Nagasaki, from 127 to 1830. For more than two centuries this trading post was the only connection between Japan and the outside world. Next to nothing was known about Japan and the Japanese and this book provided some very interesting insights not reported upon before. Inscribed on half title, W. Schmidt / 1e Smith / Zwolle, November 1845. Only two auction records in the last 30 years. Binding later but attractive, small expert repairs to title page, otherwise a very good copy of this rare publication. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Proceedings and Debates of the Virginia State Convention, of 1829-30. To which are Subjoined, The New Constitution of Virginia, and The Votes of the People
|
Richmond: Printed By Samuel Shepherd & Co. For Ritchie & Cook, 1830 iv, 919, [i] pp. Bound in 1/4 period reddish-pink leather with salmon cloth boards & marbled edges & eps. The spine has 4 blind-rolled raised bands with gilt & blind rules bordering them, and with a black leather spine label. A page of corrections follows the text. By the 1820's, Virginia was one of only 2 states that limited voting to landowners, and the residents of Western Virginia (the area that would become West Virginia in 1863) had grown increasingly discontented with their lack of representation in the legislature. The pressure increased until a constitutional convention was convened in 1829-1830. This convention was largely a contest between eastern Virginia landowners and the less affluent residents of Western Virginia, and the debate was dominated by issues of representation and suffrage. Delegates to the convention included such prominent Virginians as James Madison, James Monroe, John Tyler, and John Marshall. The convention ultimately compromised by loosening the requirements for suffrage and reducing the number of delegates and senators to the Virginia General Assembly. The resulting constitution was ratified by a popular majority, though most of the voters in the western part of the state ended up voting against it. Thus, the underlying intrastate tensions remained and set the stage for another showdown. Beginning with the constitutional convention in October 1829, Virginians engaged in a series of public debates that examined fundamental question of property ownership, law, and republican government. In additon to revising the state constitution, these debates grappled with key political issues that included the appropriate structure of an independent judiciary, the funding of internal improvememt projects, the nature of federal relations, and most famously, in the wake of the 1831 Nat Turner insurrection, the future of slavery. In Virginia, as elsewhere in the South Atlantic states, democratic reforms necessarily entailed a degree of legal and political change that potentially challenged the agrarian order upon which the complex social relations of slavery rested. In 1829 Virginians thus embarked on the path to modern democracy fully aware of the tensions between democratic political reforms and slavery, and the manner in which they negotiated these tensions. The Virginia convention inaugurated a period of "democratic reorientation" across the antebellum South during the 1830's, with popularly mandated constitutional conventions occuring in North Carolina and Georgia and significant reforms instituted by constitutional amendment in Maryland. Additionally, Tennessee and Mississippi held constitutional conventions and addressed similar themes during the decade. This is a very attractive, clean and tight copy of a seminal work concerning the beginnings of the American Republic's advancement toward the modern Democratic priciples that we now enjoy. There is a very small ink smudge on the fep and very light wear to the extremities. You will find an occassional reference to a name in pencil at top of page on numerous occassions throughout the text and on some occassions, there will also be a small pencil mark to mark the exact passage referencing the name. Scattered light foxing to contents, but overall this is a very good++ copy!!. Hard Cover. Very Good ++/No Dust Jacket. 8vo.
