SCHOUW, Joakim frederik
Grundzuge einer allgenmeinen Pflanzengeographie
1823. WORLD VEGETATION ZONES. SCHOUW, Joakim Frederik. Grundzuge einer allgemeinen Pflanzengeographie! aus dem Danischen ubersetzt vom Verfasser. Two volumes. Text: xii, 524, [4] pp. With 4 folding tables (1 letterpress in 3 parts, and 3 lithographed). Atlas: engraved title, 12 lithographic maps of the world, 10 double-sheet for a total of 22 mapsheets, each showing, in variously coloured wash, the geographical zones of a different plant or group of plants, letterpress explanatory leaf at end. 8vo. text volume, 200 x 118 mm, and oblong folio atlas volume, 425 x 534 mm, uniformly bound in contemporary half dark green straight-grained morocco, the boards covered in lighter green morocco-grained paper, spines gilt, red lettering-pieces on upper cover of atlas and backstrip of text volume. Berlin: G. Reimer, 1823. |~||~||~||~||~| First Edition of the first vegetation atlas, the text volume in the first German edition (published in Danish in 1822). Schouw's path-breaking atlas was the first atlas exclusively devoted to the mapping of vegetation zones. Eleven of the twelve large world maps show the zones of individual plants or plant types, including beech forest, vineyards, various spruce and fir species, heathers, grains including oats, rye, wheat, rice and corn, palm trees, proteaceae and cactuses. The final map divides the world into different botanical zones (Polynesia is the "realm of breadfruit trees," and the southeastern United States is the "realm of Magnolias", etc.). Although they appear to be an odd selection, these zones were in fact established by a statistical analysis of plant distribution. The maps provide a visually stunning window into a largely vanished world. The map for grains, for example, shows what a large portion of the Americas was still wild in the early nineteenth century, the zones of cultivation being confined to a startling extent to the extreme outer edges of the continents. At the same time, vineyards were already being cultivated in a few small regions of North and South America (the odd inclusion of vineyards in Schouw's survey of the most important plant species may be ascribed to his background). Joakim Schouw (1789-1852) took a roundabout route to his vocation: the son of a wine merchant, he showed an early interest in botany but entered his family's business. The damp of wine cellars proved detrimental to his health and he turned to law, obtaining a law degree while pursuing his interest in botany as an amateur. In 1812 he took part in a botanical expedition to Norway during which he was "strongly impressed by the conspicuous division of the vegetation into zones" (DSB). He then proceeded to study, on his own, the entire extant literature on plant geography, especially the works of Humboldt (whom he later met) and Wahlenberg, and received a Ph.D in botany in 1816. After several research expeditions throughout Europe, Schouw was appointed professor of botany at Copenhagen University, and later became curator of the Copenhagen botanical gardens. A very fine, wide-margined and clean copy of a little known but important cartographical landmark, anticipating the ecological and biodiversity mapping of the 20th and 21st centuries. Soft crease to most of the maps. Foxing to atlas volume title and explanatory leaf, the latter with marginal repaired tear. Small light dampstain to upper margins of first few leaves of text. Slight wear to binding of text volume. DSB XII p. 215. Phillips 5382. Stafleu & Cowan 11066-67.

MONTESQUIEU, Charles Louis de Secondat
Spirit of Laws
1823. MONTESQUIEU, [Charles Louis] de Secondat, Baron de. The Spirit of Laws. London: J. Collingwood et al, 1823. Two volumes. Octavo, contemporary full diced brown calf gilt, burgundy morocco spine labels. $950. Later edition in English of Montesquieu's classic De L'Esprit Des Loix, with frontispiece portrait, handsomely bound in contemporary calf. "In many ways one of the most remarkable works of the 18th century! It consists of six main sections, the first dealing with law in general and different forms of government, and the second with the means of government, military matters, taxation and so on. The third deals with national character and the effect on it of climate; a subject of peculiar originality! The fourth and fifth deal with economic matters and religion; the last is an appendix on law! The scheme that emerges of a liberal benevolent monarchy limited by safeguards on individual liberty was to prove immensely influential! his theories underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French revolutions, and the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated" (PMM 197). "One of the greatest masterpieces of political theory and a pioneering work in sociology! its emphasis on the separation of powers of government and on a system of checks and balances profoundly influenced constitutional thought in both America and France. Indeed, during the early and later stages of the French Revolution, Montesquieu's theories were much more important than those of Rousseau" (McNamara, France in the Age of Revolution). "The theories of Montesquieu had a most important and far reaching influence on the thinking of the framers of the United States Constitution" (Sowerby III:2325). The Spirit of Laws was first published in 1748 as L'Esprit des Loix, and first translated into English by Thomas Nugent in 1750. This new edition features a "Memoir of the Life and Writings of the Author and an Analysis of the Work." See CBEL II:800. See Kress 5057. See Hazlitt, 121-22. Bookplates. Minor dampstaining to lower edges of both volumes. Contemporary calf lightly rubbed, joints expertly reinforced. A very good set, handsomely bound.

Monroe, James (1758-1831).
Message From the President of the United States, to Both Houses of Congress, at the Commencement of the First Session of the Eighteenth Congress. December 2, 1823. 15 Pages. --Documents Accompanying the Message of the President of the United States to Bo
Washington, D.C. : Gales & Seaton, 1823. 2 parts in one volume. 8vo., (9 x 6 inches). 26 folding tables (browned and spotted). Modern calf-backed boards. Provenance: Jay T. Snider Collection of Historical Americana. First edition in book form of THE "MONROE DOCTRINE", Senate issue. The Congressional printing of the "Monroe Doctrine" is preceded only by the National Intelligencer's broadside of Dec. 2, 1823. President James Monroe's 1823 annual message to Congress contained the Monroe Doctrine, which warned European powers not to interfere in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. Buried in an otherwise routine annual message delivered to Congress by President James Monroe in December 1823, Monroe warned European nations that the United States would not tolerate further colonization or puppet monarchs. The doctrine was conceived to meet major concerns of the moment, but it soon became a watchword of U.S. policy in the Western Hemisphere. "The threat of intervention by European powers to restore Spain's revolting American colonies, and the aggressive attitude of Russia on the Northwest Coast of America, caused Monroe to declare in his annual message to Congress of December 2, 1823: 'The American continents, by the free and independent condition which they have assumed and maintained, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European power' and that European intervention in this hemisphere could not be viewed 'in any other light than as the manifestation of an unfriendly disposition toward the United States. ' The message also disclaimed any intention of the United States to take any part 'in the wars of the European powers' or 'in matters relating to themselves, ' i.e. the European powers. This declaration was at first viewed by the European powers with irritation and contempt, and there were minor violations. Polk reaffirmed the doctrine in 1845 and 1848, and after the Civil War the principal became better established when fear of action by the United States was a facto

The second edition includes an appendix containing several additional case histories. Peltier, Fractures, pp. 42-43. 35871

BUCKLAND (W.)
Reliquiae diluvian ae ou observations on the organic remains contained in caves, fissures, and diluvial gravel and on other geological phenomena attesting the action of an universal deluge
London, Murray, 1823, un volume grand in 4 relie en demi-soie verte, dos orne de filets dores, (reliure moderne, 7pp., 1 tableau depliant, 303pp., 27 Planches dont certaines en couleurs EDITION ORIGINALE.~"In 1822 Buckland published his study of the fossil bones found in Kirkdale cave in Yorkshire, and in 1823 expanded it into a full-scale treatise, Reliquiae diluvianae... His important conclusion was that species of animals that now exist together only in the tropics had coexisted in northern Europe with species still in existence, and that this demonstrated a tropical climate in antediluvial times, before the deluge buried the bones in a layer of mud. Further, the bones and caves showed that Europe had then been dry land much as it is now. In another cave Buckland found a human skeleton which, since the cave showed signs of human disturbance in historic time, he took to be postdiluvial. The Reliquiae was well received for its scientific content... Cuvier was very pleased with it, although he did not fully concede the general validity of Buckland's reasoning concerning climate...". FASHION, London, early 19th century. - W. HEARN (publisher)
The Cyclopaedia of the British Costumes from the Metropolitan Repository of Fashions
London: W. Hearn, May 1823 - October 1827. Numbers 1-10 only bound in one volume, small oblong quarto. (6 3/4 x 9 inches). Engraved general title, 1 hand-coloured aquatint view of the Metropolitan Repository of Fashions building, 55 hand-coloured lithographed fashion plates with images of 126 costumes by various anonymous hands, extra-illustrated with a duplicate general title bound before the start of the 7th number. (About six plates shaved). Contemporary half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, the leather on the covers tooled in blind with a decorative roll tool, the flat spine divided into five compartments by gilt fillets and an overall repeat design of various small tools. A significant portion of this charming, important and very rare bi-annual survey of what was fashionable in the London of King George IV, the most dandified of all the British monarchy. "A Dandy is a clothes-wearing Man, a Man whose trade, office and existence consists in the wearing of Clothes. Every faculty of his soul, spirit, purse, and person is heroically consecrated to this one object, the wearing of Clothes wisely and well: so that the others dress to live, he lives to dress" (Thomas Carlyle). London of the mid-1820s was the fashion centre of the world: the proclaimed leader of the fashionable Regency set had finally succeeded his father, and been crowned King George IV at a ceremony that was "cutting-edge" in fashion terms. This final decade before the start of the Victorian era was to be probably the last time when men's fashions were as important (and as eye-catching) as women's. For the man-about-town the right cut, colour, and combination were all vital components of maintaining one's position in society. The present very rare work (no copies, sets or partial sets are listed as having sold at auction in the past thirty five years) was evidently intended for the tailors and dress shops which supplied London high society, but with a decided bias: 73 of the 126 figures show men's costume (of the remainder 25 are of children and 28 women). The charming text (the perfect complement to the plates) is the work of a fashion writer at the centre of the world they are describing. The ephemeral nature of fashion means that the text has a charming immediacy "Coats, in respect to colours, the Olives and Clarets have had a tolerable run, but the Spanish Brown is expected to take", whilst also providing details important in the history of fashion about what cloth was used, how it was cut, the type and number of buttons and other embellishments, the way the clothes should hang - all details essential for tailors of the day, but also details which fashion plates alone cannot show and which would otherwise have been lost. The present volume is one of five that were published between 1823 and 1847, with a total of about 146 plates (according to Colas). OCLC lists a single example of this set, which was exhibited at the Smithsonian. Colas I, 771; Hiler p.209.

SHARPE, Richard Scrafton
OLD FRIENDS IN NEW DRESS; OR, FAMILIAR FABLES IN VERSE
      - New Haven: New-Haven, and S. Babcock and Co. 329 King-St. Charleston, S.C. 1823. Illustrated with woodcuts, some signed by Alexander Anderson. 32mo. 3 1, [1] pp. Pictorial wrapper. Later stitching on the spine. Covers spotted and soiled. Internally, some age discoloration, spotting and occasional foxing. Some pages dog-eared; one page with a closed horizontal tear about the middle, another torn about 1/2 way (both pages are still held intact and held in). Fair condition. Rare. Contents: The fox and the crow; The lion and the mouse; The dog in the manger; The daw in borrowed plumes; The shepherd's boy and the wolf; The husbandman and his three sons; The jewel on the dunghill; The belly and the limbs; The boy and the filberts; The fox and the stork; The ass and the lap-dog. Last page blank; pasted to printed wrapper. Authorship attributed to Richard Sharpe. Nursery-rhyme type fables in verse. According to the author's Preface to the first London edition, supposed essentially to be re-workings of Aesop's fables, written so that the moral of the story is intertwined with the fable itself, and so it can not possibly be missed by the inattentive child reader. The verses, however, too entertaining for that to have been his true and only purpose. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
