Saussure, L.A. Necker De
A Voyage to the Hebrides, or Western Isles of Scotland: with observations on the Manners and Customs of the Highlanders.
|
Richard Phillips 1822 - Brown cloth over marbled boards, 8vo., pp. iv, 116. With an aquatint frontispiece and three other aquatints. An interesting and scarce account of the Scottish Highlands at the turn of the 19th century published in 1822. As with many of the travel and exploration books published by Richard Phillips between 1819 and 1823, this book also was to become part of "New Voyages and Travels." These publications appeared in wrappers with the intention to have several of them to be bound together into larger volumes. Both the issues still in the original wrappers and the bound together editions are rather scarce. In recent years several of the larger volumes have been broken down. The various parts thus obtained then usually were bound in modern bindings, sometimes described as: "Handsome period style binding", while in most cases these bindings actually are quite cheap due to the value of the book. This is the case here too. Yet, this book both is scarce and interesting. The engravings, a frontispiece and 3 others, give a good impression of the Hebrides at the beginning of the 19th century. Missing 1 plate, titled: "The Scour of Eigg from the South-East". "Fingal's Cave", "Stirling Castle", "Inverary" and "The Scour of Eigg from the East" are all present. Although M. de Saussure is mainly known as a geologist, this is quite an interesting book. There is some very light foxing on the plates, while the text is clean. Furthermore there is some offsetting from the plates to the text (as usual), some edgewear, there is one small closed tear each in the margins of page 50 and page 84. Moreover the plates are bound in at the wrong places. Overall it still remains a clean and attractive copy of a scarce book. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Hongs of Canton - Western Merchants in south China 1700-1900, as seen in Chinese export paintings
|
London, English Art Books, 2009. First edition. Quarto. Hardcover. New. New. 310 Pages, richly illustrated. Canton - modern Guangzhou - was for nearly a century the only Chinese port at which Westerners were allowed to trade. The Western merchants leased `hongs' outside the city walls - spacious waterfront buildings adapted to suit their own tastes. Here they lived and conducted their often lucrative business, sending back tea and other Chinese products to Europe and North America. The Hongs of Canton offers, for the first time, a history of the `hongs' as seen through Chinese export paintings. These paintings, produced in Canton specifically for visitors from the West, combined Chinese and Western styles. By the 1780s some of the Cantonese export artists were making skilful use of the Western medium of oil paint. Their subjects included not only the façades and interiors of the hongs (known also `factories'), but also shopping streets, gardens, forts, regattas, seagoing junks, the devastating fire of 1822 in its successive stages, and the trial of 52 unruly British sailors. Making extensive use of these pictures, and close-up observation of their details, this book offers a social history of the hongs and their diverse occupants. It considers their changing appearance, the merchants' everyday activities both legitimate and illicit, the rise of `free traders' at the expense of national companies, and the growing friction between the Westerners and their Chinese hosts, culminating in the two `opium wars' of the mid-nineteenth century. After the Western hongs were finally burned down on 1856, Chinese export artists continued to paint the waterfront with its new features - steamer wharves, pawn towers and cathedral, and also the new settlement on Shamian Island, which remained a largely Western enclave until the twentieth century. About the Author: Patrick Conner studied at the universities of Oxford and Sussex. From 1975 to 1986 he was Keeper of Fine Art at the Royal Pavilion, Art Gallery and Museums, Brighton, England; since 1986 has been Director of the Martyn Gregory Gallery, London, specialists in historical paintings related to the East India Company and the China Trade.

Gigault De La Salle, Achille-Etienne (1772-1840)
Vue Des Ruines Des Temples De Jupiter Olympien Et D'Hercule À Agrigente
|
. Paris: [peint par Remond d'après l'equisse de Cassas; Gravé par Thales Fielding; Imprimé par Rémond], 1822. Aquatint engraving, coloured by hand. India paper mounted. 11 3/4 x 17 inches (approximately). 18 3/8 x 24 1/4 inches (approximately). From `Voyage pittoresque en Sicile': a very rare series of sublime views of some of the best preserved Greek temples in the world, beautifully hand-coloured and here in the rarest state with the plate on india paper mounted. Published in Paris between 1822 and 1826, Achille-Etienne Gigault de la Salle's `Voyage pittoresque en Sicile', was published in three forms: coloured, coloured before letters or, as here, on india paper, coloured and mounted. The work can now be seen as a showcase for the talents of the best landscape artists and aquatint engravers of the period. Agrigento is the capital of Agrigento provincia, near the southern coast of Sicily. The plateau site of the ancient city is extraordinarily rich in Greek remains. A wall, with remnants of eight gates, can be traced from the two northern peaks (the Rock of Athena and the hill of Girgenti) to the ridge that carried the south line of the city's defenses. An almost continuous sacred area along this ridge has been excavated to reveal Agrigento's most famous remains, its seven Doric temples. Cf. Abbey Travel I, 262, pl. 32; cf. Brunet V, 1379.

The General Stud Book
|
London - Printed for James Weatherby 1822 - An early edition of The General Stud Book. Bound in calf leather with gilt lettering. Volume two only. But an important original work. Would be $2000 complete. The General Stud Book was the original breed registry of the United Kingdom for horses. It specifically was used to document the breeding of Thoroughbreds and related foundation bloodstock such as the Arabian horse. In 1791, James Weatherby published Introduction to a General Stud Book, which was an attempt to collect pedigrees for the horses racing then and that had raced in the past. It was filled with errors and was not at all complete, but it was popular and led in 1793 to the first volume of the General Stud Book which had many more pedigrees and was more accurate. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping and rubbing with someloss. Internally the pages are clean and bright with mild spotting on the first and last couple of pages. There is a small ink signature on the front free endpaper. Overall the condition is very good. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
