Part I contains 'General Introduction [to the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana]; or, Preliminary treatise on method [by] Samuel Taylor Coleridge, pp.43 [as stated in british Library catalogue]. Mariner, William].
An Account of the Natives of the Tonga Islands, of the South Pacific Ocean. With an Original Grammar and Vocabulary [2 vols].
John Murray., London 1818 - , , Title continues "of Their Language. Compiled and arranged from the Extensive Communications of Mr. William Mariner, Several Years Resident in Those Islands, by John Martin, M.C." 8vo. Volume I: lvi, 444pp. Volume II: 344pp, [168pp]. Second edition, with additions. Frontis and foldout map to volume I. Nicely rebound in dark green quarter-leather and cloth boards. "Mariner set sail in 1805 on a voyage to South America and the South Seas with two purposes - whaling and attacking Spanish shipping. The crew of the 'Port au Prince' mutinied in the Tonga Islands, but were murdered by natives. Young Mariner was fortunate in being taken prisoner and adopted as the King's son; he lived on the islands for four years. His work contains a very interesting account of contemporary life in Tonga, of the customs of the inhabitants and their inter-island wars, and also examples of Tongan songs and music. Dr. Martin befriended the young British sailor and recorded this account of his experiences"

BESSEL, Friedrich Wilhelm.
Fundamenta astronomiae pro anno MDCCLV deducta ex observationibus viri incomparabilis James Bradley in specula astronomica Grenovicensi per annos 1750-1762 institutis.
Friedrich Nicolovius, Königsberg 1818 - A fine copy of this work which "constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then positions of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel’s work, Bradley’s observations were made to mark the beginning of modern astrometry" (Walter Fricke in DSB). Norman 226; Honeyman 311."In 1807 Olbers encouraged [Bessel] to do a reduction of Bradley’s observations of the positions of 3,222 stars, which had been made from 1750 to 1762 at the Royal Greenwich Observatory. This task led to one of his greatest achievements . "Bessel recognized that Bradley’s observations gave a system of very accurate star positions for the epoch 1755 and that this could be utilized in two ways. First, a reference system for the measurement of positions of stars and planets was required. Second, the study of star motions necessitated the determination of accurate positions for the earliest possible epoch. Tobias Mayer had determined fundamental star positions from his own observations around the middle of the eighteenth century, but Bradley was never able to reduce his own numerous observations. "The observations of star positions had to be freed of instrumental errors, insofar as these could be determined from the measurements themselves, and of errors caused by the earth’s atmosphere (refraction). The apparent star positions at the time of a particular observation (observation epoch) had to be reduced to a common point in time (mean epoch) so that they would be freed of the effects of the motion of the earth and of the site of observation. For this a knowledge of the precession the nutation, and the aberration was necessary. Bessel determined the latitude of Greenwich for the mean epoch 1755 and the obliquity of the ecliptic, as well as the constants of precession, nutation, and aberration. To determine precession from proper motions, Bessel used both Bradley’s and Piazzi’s observations . "The positions of Bradley’s stars valid for 1755 were published by Bessel as ‘Fundamenta astronomiae pro anno 1755’ (1818). This work also gives the proper motions of the stars, as derived from these observations of Bradley, of Piazzi, and of Bessel himself. It constitutes a milestone in the history of astronomical observations, for until then positions of stars could not be given with comparable accuracy: through Bessel’s work, Bradley’s observations were made to mark the beginning of modern astrometry. During this investigation Bessel became an admirer of the art of observation as practiced by Bradley; and because Bradley could not evaluate his own observations, Bessel followed and also taught the principle that immediately after an observation, the reduction had to be done by the observer himself. Further, he realized that the accurate determination of the motions of the planets and the stars required continuous observations of their positions until such motions could be used to predict ‘the positions of the stars for all times with sufficient accuracy’." (DSB) Houzeau & Lancaster 10117. Slim folio: 330x190 mm. Fine contemporary red moiré boards with gilt-lettered spine. Pp. [12] [1] 3-325 [1:errata]. Internally clean, rare in such good condition. EDDY, John H (1784-1817)
The State of New York, with part of the Adjacent States
Engraved in Philadelphia: Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co., and printed in New York: Samuel Maverick, 1818. Fine engraved wall map backed on cartographic linen (38 4/8 x 43 6/8 inches) in 32 sections, the title beneath a fine vignette top left, and with hand-colour in outline and in part, trimmed with green silk, original marbled paper self covers on verso (some browning). Although Eddy died at a relatively young age he left behind, in addition to this beautiful map of New York, a "Map of the Western Part of the State of New-York Showing the Route of the Proposed Canal from Lake Erie to Hudson's River" (1811) which he compiled at the request of the Canal Commissioners. This was followed by a map of the environs of New York City, after which he was commissioned by Governor DeWitt Clinton create a map showing means of communication between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic via Lake Erie and the Hudson River, and a of the Niagara River. Lappe, Karl.
Mitgabe nach Rügen. Den Reisenden zur Begleitung und Erinnerung.
Greifswald. In der Königl. Regierungs-Buchhandlung.1818.. EA. 18x11 cm. IV, 204 S., 1 Bl. Halblederband mit Lederecken und marmor. Deckeln. Johnson, Samuel
A Dictionary of the English Language...With Numerous Corrections, and With the Addition of Several Thousand Words...By the Rev. H.J. Todd
London: printed for Longman, Rees [et al. ], 1818. First edition, first issue, of the first revision of Johnson's Dictionary, 5 volumes, 4to, engraved portrait after Reynolds, text in double column; full contemporary tree calf rebacked, old spines laid down, new red and green morocco labels; early owners' signatures and annotations on endpapers; a good, firm, useable set, with the half-titles. The first (5 volume) issue is far scarcer than the 4-volume issue of the same year. In it, volume 5, beginning with the letter T, contains the addition of a drop title at the top of leaf B1. B1 here corresponds to 6L3 in the 4-volume issue. In the 4-volume issue the pagination is continuous through the end of the fourth volume, but is paginated separately. Leaf 6L3 is signed "Vol. IV 6L3-Vol. V. B." On the title-pp. of the 5-volume version is the statement "In Five Volumes, " as opposed to "In Four Volumes" in the 4-volume issue. "Todd made some additions to Johnson's grammar and history of language, extended Johnson's word-list with obsolete and local terms and with derivatives and compounds, improved etymologies, added quotations where they were lacking and corrected some of those which had been given, but left the famous definitions pretty much unchanged" (Sledd & Kolb, p. 154). Courtney & Smith, p. 59 (4 volumes); Fleeman 55.4D/20a; Vancil, p. 126 (4 and 5 volumes).

Tweede Vervolg. Prentverbeeldingen van een Zevental Handwerken met Toepasselijke Bijschriften
Johannes Noman early 19th century, Z. Boemel (=Zaltbommel - 9.5 x 8 cm. Modern paper wrapper. Very good. Edges repaired. 16 pages. 7 Wood bock prints on each left page and accomanying text in ryme to the right. Dutch text. 1. The Dance master; 2. The Button maker; 3. The Mirror maker; 4. The Quil maker; 5. The wooden shoe maker; 6. The Match maker & 7. The Grave digger. The last page states that if this third (?) booklet is to the pleasing of the reader, the author will think of a 4th booklet to give away the next year. A similar booklet on Dutch companies, dating from 1818 and from the same printer is in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, The Hague from the Landwehr Collection. From the Winsinghhof library of the Winsingh family. Winsinghhof, now a protected monument in Roden, The Netherlands, bears the date 1672 above the doorway. The Winsinghs were merchants from the 17th through to the early 20th century. In the 17th & 18th century supplies were bought from the Dutch East India Company and sold at Winsinghhof. The library, of which some books date back to the 16th century remained in the attic of Winsinghhof until the decendants (the Assies family) rescued them in 1960 before selling Winsinghhof to the village Roden. A truely remarkable provenance.

Bewick.) Aesop.
The Fables of Æsop, and others, with Designs on Wood by Thamas Bewick.
Newcastle: Printed by E. Walker for T. Bewick and Son 1818 - FIRST EDITION of Bewick’s Aesop, a Royal Paper copy, with his thumb-mark receipt tipped in before the title (but sometime folded and with an offset of an oval portrait at the top), occasional minor spotting, pp. xxiv, 376, large 8vo, original boards, rebacked, short split a foot of upper joint, corners slightly worn, good Bewick was not happy with the printing of the blocks, and blamed the pressmen, but Tattersfield argues that the likely culprit was the weather. June 1818, when the book was printed, was unusually hot and this would have had a deleterious effect both on the paper, which needed to be dampish, and the ink. The thumb-mark receipt is no part of the book’s make-up, but is nice to have. (Tattersfield TB 1.35) [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Dun & sun are legitimate enough (tho' if it be a natural sun (son) that doesn't seem so sure) but exactly, to my ear, not tuneful, moreover sun struck me as a forced epithet. . . . My ballad has gone with other good intentions to pave Hades, & my new Tale fills my hands to overflowing. . . ." Remains of (yellowed) cellophane mounting tape; folds; minor toning and wear; but good overall. Francis Edward Smedley (1818-1864); English novelist.

CUVIER, Frederic (1773-1838).
Histoire Naturelle Des Mammifres, Avec Les figures Originales.d'aprs Des Animaux Vivians.
Paris: A. Belin (vols.I-VI); A. Blaise (vol.VII), - 7 volumes. Folio (20 x 13 inches). Half-titles, 8-page "Avis aux Souscripteurs" bound-in at front of volume one. 342 fine hand-colored lithographic plates by J.C. Werner, A. Velin Bregeaut & Cie., Delaport, Langlum and C. de Lasteyrie, after J.C. Werner, de Waily, Huet, Marchyal and Saulnier, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with two additional smaller format plates (from the 4to issue) by and after Werner (some light spotting and browning). Contemporary French red half morocco gilt (extremities lightly rubbed). The first serious attempt to provide an extensive classified description of mammals. First edition, bound from the original 72 parts between 1818 and 1824, when there was a hiatus until 1830, with parts 61 to 72 published between then and 1842. The final part appeared in October 1842. The animals were drawn from life, mainly at the zoo in the Jardin des Plantes. The majority of the descriptions were by Cuvier, with Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire editing the work and providing occasional articles (indicated by his initials at the end of each article). According to the inserted "Avis." the two final parts were edited and seen through the press by Cuvier's son. A quarto edition was started in 1826, but ceased publication (with the 13th part) in July 1833. The work constitutes the first serious attempt to provide an extensive classified description of mammals: "L'ouvrage que nous publions tait depuis long-temps reconnu necessaire, et demand par les naturalistes. L'existence d'un tres-grand nombre d'espces de Mammifres ne reposait que sur des notes imparfaites, ou sur de simples phrases caractristiques, et la plupart des figures qu'on pouvait citer l'appui des autres taient in correctes. Nos dessins representant chaque animal dans une attitude simple, et toujours de profil. et nous aurons soin de donner une figure de face toutes les fois qu'il sera necessaire de voir ainsi les animaux pour les mieux juger." (Avertissement vol.I, p.[I]). The work is normally listed as complete with 431 plates (in accordance with the "Table Generale et Methodique" at the rear of the final volume), however the present copy corresponds to both Brunet and the Avis. note from the final editor of the work, who both call for 432 plates. Brunet II 1535; BM (NH) II, p.656; Nissen ZBI 1525; cf. Wood p.354.

. Paris, A. Belin, 1818-1842. Large Folio (approximately 53 x 35 cm). Ten plates with explanatory text leaves. Not bound, as issued.* A magnificent publication with fine large plates of mammals from all over the world. The authors, Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844) and Frederic Cuvier (1769-1832) were the leading authorities in Mammalogy in the first half of the 19th century, and the "Histoire naturelle des mammiferes" is widely regarded as their magnum opus. From this work, these are the bears (Ursidae). Included are the following species: l'ours polaire (U. maritimus); ours noir d'Amerique (U. americanus); ours des cordillieres (U. ornatus); le jongleur (U. labiatus or U. longirostris); the same "tres vieux (very old)"; ours des Asturies (U. arctos from Spain); ours brun des alpes et de Norwege (U arctos (adult brown bear from the Alps, and a three months old young from Norway); ours de malais (U. malayanus); and ours de Thibet (U. thibetanus). Not included is the ours de siberie. All as issued, without stamps, annotations or other markings. All text leaves, and all plates uncut, untrimmed, resulting in very big margins. Francesco Guicciardini
Delle Istorie D'Italia. In eight volumes
Firenze - Niccolo Conti 1818 - A 19th century publication of Guicciardini's magnum opus. In Italian. Illustrated bookplates of Hugh Trevor-Roper, Chiefswood Melrose, to front pastedowns. Hugh Redwald Trevor-Roper (15 January 1914 27 January 2003) was an English historian of early modern Britain and Nazi Germany and Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford. He was made a life peer in 1979 on the advice of Prime Minster Margaret Thatcher, choosing the title Baron Dacre of Glanton. His most successful book emerged from his assignment as a British intelligence officer in 1945 to discover what happened in the last days of Hitler's bunker. From his interviews with a range of witnesses and study of surviving documents he demonstrated to the satisfaction of most analysts that Hitler was dead and had not escaped from Berlin. For Trevor-Roper, the major themes of early modern Europe were those of intellectual vitality, religious quarrels and of divergence between Protestant and Catholic states, the latter being outpaced by the former economically, politically and constitutionally. With a portrait frontispiece of Guicciardini to volume I. Complete in twenty books bound into eight volumes. Francesco Guicciardini (6 March 1483 22 May 1540) was an Italian historian and statesman. A friend and critic of Niccol Machiavelli, he is considered one of the major political writers of the Italian Renaissance. In his masterpiece, The History of Italy, Guicciardini paved the way for a new style in historiography, with his use of government sources to support arguments and the realistic analysis of the people and events of his time. Guicciardini is best known as the author of the Storia d'Italia (History of Italy), which provides a detailed account of politics in the Italian Peninsula between 1490 and 1534. Written during the last years of his life, this work contains the historian's observations collected over his entire lifetime and was a work intended for posterity. His many personal encounters with powerful Italian rulers serves to explain his perspective as a historian. Condition: In deocorative full calf bindings. Volume I only has been rebacked with original boards and reinforced hinges. Externally rubbed, with wear to heads and tails of spine and slight loss. Three joints starting, five cracked, and five boards held delicately by cords only. Internally firmly bound. Bright but with light scattered foxing, a few small tidemarks to the gutters. Overall: GOOD ONLY [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Shelley, Percy B.
Laon and Cythna
by B. McMillan, for Sherwood, Neely & Jones, and C. and J. Ollier London 1818 First Edition or, TheRevolution of The Golden City: A Vision of the Nineteenth Century. In the Stanza of Spenser. 8vo. [223 x 142 x 22 mm]. [iii]-xxxii, 270, [2] mm. Bound c.1900 in brown goatskin, the covers tooled in gilt with a fillet border enclosing an all over design of stylised flower-heads linked by stems and interspersed with drops. The spine divided into six panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second and fourth and dated at the foot, the others with a flower-head, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt double fillet, the turn-ins with gilt fillets and small stylised flower-heads, marbled endleaves, top edge gilt, the others uncut. (Joints a little rubbed and spine slightly darkened). Slightly browned throughout, but a very good copy, with the dedication and errata leaves and untrimmed edges. There is an old bookseller's typed description which concludes "So fine a copy as this, in uncut state, is almost never seen". This is the second state of the first edition, without the fly-title with the quotation from Pindar. It is said that only 12 copies of the first state were issued, for presentation. This second state is in itself quite rare as shortly before the intended publication of 750 copies in January 1818, Ollier became concerned about possible incestuous, blasphemous and treasonable material within the poem. Shelley reluctantly revised the relevant passages and it subsequently appeared with numerous cancel leaves, including the title, as The Revolt of Islam. Blairhame leather label of Mr and Mrs J. Insley Blair.
