' A New Edition with Great Additions. The six volumes rebound in half blue morocco onto marbled boards. Elizabeth Godfrey listed as the last offender in supplement to vol VI, (1807). Vol II, 400pp, frontis and 7 plates, minor foxing and browning of plates, some margin loss to frontis. Vol III, 400pp, frontis and 5 plates (frontis, 7pp and additional plate facsimile from British Library edition). Original plates are browned with repair and sm tear to single plate. Vol IV, 406pp, frontis and 12 plates, minor foxing and margin loss to plates. Vol V, 356pp, frontis and 12 plates, light foxing. Vol VI, 895pp, frontis and 21 plates, 22pp index and 28pp supplement for additional 2 trials (1807) with fldng copper plate. Marginal loss to plates and sm tear to single page with minor loss of text. The only copy of this title at British Museum completes vol VI with 416pp. There is no single book called 'The Newgate Calendar'. The first readily available accounts of crimes and criminals in England were broadsheets and chapbooks. Both were very cheap-a penny or so-and were sold at fairs, by itinerant pedlars and particularly at executions. The first 'Newgate Calendars' were collections of these accounts, and as the eighteenth century progressed, more and more crimes were added; the various collections plagiarized their predecessors shamelessly. These publications were considered morally uplifting reading and few literate homes would have been without one; often the only book apart from the bible. The first Newgate Calendar series was first published in 5 vols by R. Sanders in 1760 and narrated notorious crimes from 1700 till then. This William Jackson publication is scarce. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

POCOCK, W.F.
Architectural Designs for Rustic Cottages, Picturesque Dwellings, Villas, &c. with appropriate scenery, plans, and descriptions. To which are prefixed, some critical observtions on their style and character....
London: for J. Taylor, 1807. - 4to, 3/4 calf (renewed), old marbled boards. vii + 36 pp. + 33 engraved and aquatint plates in sepia. In his dedication to Sir John Courtenay Honeywood, Pocock indicates that his book is "calculated to further the views you entertain for promoting the comforts and happiness of those rustic dependants necessary to an extensive Estate." The Preface reveals his concern about the conflict between utility and aesthetics in domestic design. The first four essays in the following "Introductory Observations" are concerned with the properties of specific residential types: rustic cottages, the cabane ornee, Grecian or Roman villas, and buildings of the "antient English Character, usually denominated Gothic." The last three essays are concerned with the scenery and situation, the execution of the building, and the causes of dry rot. First edition. Archer 262.1 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Pennsylvania. Laws, statutes, etc
An act for the regulation of the militia of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. [with] Steuben, Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard Augustin, Baron von. Regulations for the order and discipline of the troops of the United States
John R. Mathews, Lancaster (PA):: John R. Mathews,, 1807.. Contemporary mottled sheep, showing expectable damage from acid binding treatment, wear, and a few pin-type wormholes. Early inked ownership inscriptions as described above, one dated 1828. Many corners dog-eared; pages gently age-toned with some darker spotting. Second work with plates, preliminary leaves, title-page, and pp. 81/82 lacking; some leaves loosening. With faults but still fascinating.. 12mo (17.2 cm, 6.75"). 64, 5-85 (lacking prelim. ff., pp. 1-4 & 81/82), [1 (blank)] pp. (lacking plts.). . Developing state and private militia companies proved to be a troublesome issue for Pennsylvania well into the 18th century, largely because of Quaker influence; the first Militia Act was not passed until 1755, and the first document in this 1807 volume implies that the system was still in flux, at least to some degree. The militia regulations passed by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1807, here in a Lancaster, Pennsylvania, imprint of the same year, update and in some particulars supercede the Act of 1802; they are here bound as issued with Baron von Steuben's classic military treatise printed in the same year by the same publisher. Commonly referred to as the "Blue Book" (for the color of its original wrappers), the Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops was written by Von Steuben, the first Inspector General of the United States Army, based on his experience training Washington's troops at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. First printed in 1779, it remains in use, in modified form, even today-and its combination here with another contemporary document of obvious importance for soldiers and officers, with a Pennsylvania provenance and in an original binding, provides a very pleasing artifact of military history Provenance: Among several early ownership inscriptions on the front pastedown and title-page is one reading "John Ebling Captain." Several different John Eblings, most hailing from Berks County, PA, are recorded as having served in Pennsylvania companies.

There are comments written in a contemporary hand (dated 1809) with a fountain pen. These are a plus in my opinion. A note in the back says "James Fenton's books" [Attributes: Hard Cover]

M. LUDLOWS BOOK, HUNTSVILLE THEATRE" at title page, and at first page, "N. M. LUDLOW" with "[Enter] LUDLOW & CUMMINS" hand - written above the printed stage direction, "Enter Aura and Flora," then lined through, full old leather, spine chipped, leather scuffed and worn, front board detached, but present, rear board holding by cords. Volume also includes The Distrest Mother by Ambrose Philips, performed by W. Oxberry, Boston: Wells & Lilly, 1822, 72pp, SIGNED "N. M. LUDLOW" with fancy signature underlining at first page, and Cortez Or The Conquest Of Mexico, by J. R. Planche, NY: Circulating Library and Dramatic Repository, 1824, 47pp, SIGNED "N. M. LUDLOW" at first page, and A Budget Of Blunders, by Charles Kemble, Philadelphia: Thomas H. Palmer, 1823, 36pp, includes numerous pencil notations opposite the title page that are faded but appear to be itinerary and bookkeeping, in Ludlow's hand, with the city of Louisville, and the dates 1824 and 1825 noted, plus a dramatis personae page which lists the players at the various performance venues such as New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Covent Garden. Volume was from the personal library of Ludlow, and is identified by his bookplate, "Presented to Doctor Simpson, Through Motives of Respect, by his friend, N. M. Ludlow," as Volume IX, but individual dramas of the time were not issued bound, but rather as singles that could be collected and bound. Ludlow apparently put together his own set, most likely for personal use by him and his troupe. Ludlow is credited as being the first to take modern theater on tour beyond the Allegheny Mountains, and the first to set out by showboat, the Noah's Ark, to make theater available to towns along the Cumberland, Ohio, and Mississippi rivers. He captured much of the adventure in his autobiography, Dramatic Life As I Found It, St. Louis, 1880. Very scarce.. Hard Cover. Good. 16mo.

By Francis Buchanan, M.D. fellow of the Royal Society, and of the Society of Antiquaries of London...
Hegel, G. W. F.
System Der Wissenschaft. Erster Theil, Die Phaenomenologie Des Geistes
bey Joseph Anton Goebhardt, 1807. Octavo, 765pp. First edition of Hegel's majestic Phenomenology of Spirit, the inaugural text for nothing less than a reinvention of Western philosophy. The influence of the Phenomenology on subsequent thought has been both profound and pervasive--in fact it is sometimes difficult to imagine a philosopher writing in the wake of Hegel. Although it has often served as the whipping boy for host of philosophers who have mastered only ordinary language, it has remained the single most potent source of philosophical inspiration for the vast majority of the world's greatest thinkers since its publication. A fresh, attractive very good or better copy in a slightly later (1830s) binding of coated paper-covered boards.
