Mrs M.A. Hughes, author, grandmother of Thomas Hughes, ce...
Autograph Letter Signed "M.A. Hughes" to Richard Twining, jun., Banker and Tea Merchant (see DNB
No place, 24 Sept. [1807]. Three pages, 4to, but cross-written, making six pages of writing, sometimes hard to read, small piece of letter with a few words detached but present. Mrs Hughes is her usual informative, authoritative, lively and intelligent self, initially discussing the British disaster at Buenos Ayres. being unable to think of "a worse planned or more ill-fated expedition" in which the dead were "sacrificed". She attacks the commander, the Duke of York, in no uncertain terms: she hopes it's not a crime to wish him out of a world to which he he'd done so little good. She then attacks in greater detail and with even greater moral outrage the attack on the civilian population of Copenhagen [Second Battle of Copenhagen, 2000 killed during a British bombardment]. She hopes that an Enquiry will put the blame on Napoleon's shoulders, but appears to doubt it. "The honour & reputation of a mighty nation is at stake . . . to be sure war is in every point hostile to the spirit of Chistianity." She then expresses her hostility to the Grenvilles (politicians), adding that "personally I dislike Lord G[renville; former Prime Minister] on account of his desertion of Mr. Pitt" (the "first of men"). She then moves on to more personal matters.

[Tucker, John Goulston Price]:
A NARRATIVE OF THE OPERATIONS OF A SMALL BRITISH FORCE, UNDER THE COMMAND OF BRIGADIER- GENERAL SIR SAMUEL AUCHMUTY, EMPLOYED IN THE REDUCTION OF MONTE VIDEO, ON THE RIVER PLATE, A.D. 1807. By a Field Officer on the Staff. Illustrated with a Plan of the O
London: Printed for John Joseph Stockdale, 1807.. 60pp. plus one engraved plan. Quarto. Original boards, with letterpress title on front cover and publisher's advertisement on rear cover, rebacked and recornered. Some soiling on cover, inner hinges reinforced. Light offsetting of plan onto titlepage, otherwise a very clean copy of the text. Else a fine copy. In a cloth slipcase. An anonymous account by a field officer, now attributed to John Goulston Price Tucker, of Samuel Auchmuty's capture of Montevideo in 1807. This attack was one of a series of British incursions in South America in the beginning of the 19th century. Auchmuty's original mission was to retake Buenos Aires, which had briefly been under British control. As this was not possible, he chose instead to attack nearby Montevideo, which was strongly fortified, but much smaller than Buenos Aires. The work includes the narrative of the operations and the text of Auchmuty's general order declaring victory. An appendix records Auchmuty's own version of the events, names of British wounded and killed, prizes taken at Montevideo, and related proceedings in Parliament. The engraved plan shows the geographic region, with British troop movements delineated. SABIN 51819. ALBERICH 1248.

BYRON
Hours of Idleness
1807. FIRST EDITION. BYRON, George Gordon, Lord. Hours of Idleness, A Series of Poems, Original and Translated. Newark: S. and J. Ridge, 1807. Thin octavo, late 19th-century brown cloth spine, original drab paper boards, paper spine label, uncut. Housed in a custom chemise and slipcase. $4800. First edition, rare first issue of Byron's first published work, in original drab paper boards. "In every Bookseller's I see my own name, & say nothing, but enjoy my fame in secret," the 19-year-old Bryon wrote to a friend after the publication of this book (Eisler, 134). In addition to a number of Byron's poems that appeared only a few months earlier in the privately printed chapbooks Fugitive Pieces (November 1806) and Poems on Various Occasions (January 1807), Hours of Idleness (June 1807) contains 12 new poems and several translations of Catullus, Euripides and others. Although Hours of Idleness received mixed critical reviews, this volume marked the public beginning of one of the most admired poets in English literature and quickly ran to a second edition in March 1808 under the title Poems Original and Translated. Rare first issue, in crown octavo (uncut leaves measuring approximately 4 3/4 by 7 1/2 inches), with paper watermarked 1806 and with all points as called for in Randolph. Randolph, 9. Wise I:7-8. Hayward 218. Owner signature; bookplate of noted bibliophile Frank Brewer Bemis. Lacking front free endpaper. A fine copy of this early Byron rarity.

RULHIERE, C. (C.)
Histoire de l'anarchie de Pologne, et du démembrement de cette république. Suivi des anecdotes sur la révolution de Russie, en 1762, par le même auteur.
      - Paris, Desenne, Nicolle et Desenne jeune, 1807. 4 volumes. (4), 58, 385 pp.; (4), 564 pp.; (4), 517 pp.; (4), 443 pp. Small 8vo. Contemporary half calf, marbled boards, spines gilt in compartments, gilt lettering, the black background of the lettering partly rubbed off. Catalogue Russica, ii, R-1528; cf.: Zaleski, i, 16. First edition. In Paris the problem of Poland was discussed with extraordinary intensity. The circles of diplomats, writers, and economists were extraordinary sensitive. The work of Rulhière, published posthumously in 1807, but which circulated widely in manuscript from the seventies and eighties, is typical. The political element dominated: the struggles of men and circumstances, intrigues, betrayals, violence. But above this rose the desparate will of the Poles to live and act, even when everything around them was collapsing. (See for an elaborate treatment of the Polish question and Rulhière's book: F. Venturi, The End of the Old Regime in Europe, 1768-1776. The First Crisis, chapter VII).The Anecdotes sur la révolution de Russie had appeared already before, in 1797.
3 volumes. Hamburg & Mainz, Vollmer, 1805-1807. 136, 130, 146 pp. Small Octavo. With 6, 2 coloured, folding copper plates. Contemp. half calf with gilt labels and some gilt stamping to spines.

James Francis Stephens (C.M. Curtis & John Obadiah Westwood. (Illustrators).
Illustrations of British Entomology, Vols 3-7, Being the Mandibulata [Beetles] Complete. With the Rare 1846 Supplement. Containing First Appearance in Print of Charles Darwin. )
Baldwin & Cradock, for the author, London, 1830-1835. and Supplement of. The first published appearance in print of Charles Darwin. Comprising volumes 3-7 of Mandibulata (Beetles) from Stephens classic and ground-breaking 11 volume work, and the 40pp Supplement, in which Stephens thanks his helpers, including Darwin. Full title 'Illustrations of British Entomology; or A Synopsis of Indigenous Insects: containing Their Generic and Specific Distinctions; with An Account of their Metamorphoses, Times of Appearance, Localities, Food, and Economy, as far as Practicable. The text and plates are extraordinarily clean and bright and free from foxing and all bindings are tight and secure. ** James Francis Stephens was born in London. He was employed in the Admiralty office, Somerset House, from 1807 to 1845. In his spare time he assisted William Elford Leach in arranging the insect collection at the British Museum (In 1818 he was seconded to the British Museum, and on completion of his work returned to the Admiralty). He made a large insect collection, which contains many type specimens. After his retirement this collection was purchased by the British Museum. In 1833, he was a founder of what became the Royal Entomological Society of London. Stephen's 'Illustrations of British Entomology', often entitled simply 'British Entomology' or 'Stephens British Insects' was in immediate competition with John Curtis's 'British Entomology' (1824-1839). This gave rise to an acrimonious dispute which split the British entomological establishment into opposing factions for over thirty years. They were never reconciled despite Stephen's close friend John Obadiah Westwood's attempt to heal the rift. Charles Darwin's name occurs on about thirty records in the Mandibulata volumes. Sabin: 102541. Howes: W 235.

Shepherd, Luke
John Bon and Mast person
London: [J. Smeeton (for Machell Stace)], 1807]. Reprint of the 1548 edition. PRINTED ON VELLUM, one of 12 (?) copies on thus. 4to (24.0 x 18.5 mm). One woodcut; text printed in black letter, roman type for colophon. 4 leaves of type facsimile, plus colophon leaf. Contemporary blue morocco gilt with the arms and initials of Sir Mark Masterman Sykes, 1771-1823, M.P. (Evans sale, 28 May 1824, lot 92, to Rivington, !1.13.0); with the bookplate and signature of Cornelius Paine; and small bookplate of Hans (Jean) Furstenberg, 1890-1982. Lowndes 233 . Fine type-facsimile of the extremely rare 1548 satirical poem on the Eucharist, written by Luke Shepherd (fl. 1550), and originally printed by J. Daye and W. Seres in London. Only two copies of the original are known to exist (the British and Newberry Libraries), and a clue to its rarity may be found in this colophon of Smeeton's facsimile, which quotes a manuscript note by Richard Forster in the copy of the original from which Smeeton reprinted his facsimile: "It is a bitter Satire on the real Presence, Daye the printer of it, and also Seres, were brought into much trouble for printing only a few copies-which were nearly destroyed by the Zealots of the old Religion. There is no doubt but the buying up and destroying those kind of Books (which were obnoxious to Cardinal Wolsey and others) was very common in those days, and made them very rare even in their own time." The vellum issue of Smeeton's superb facsimile is naturally quite rare as well: the British Museum's general catalogue, and Alston (p.35) state that the vellum issue consisted of only 12 copies
