Malthus, Thomas Robert:
Versuch über die Bedingung und die Folgen der Volksvermehrung. Aus dem Englischen von Franz Hermann Hegewisch. 2 Bände in 1.
Altona, J.F. Hammerich, 1807. XVI, 368 SS.; VIII, 358 SS., 1 Bl. (Verbesserungen). Hldr.bd.d.Zt. mit 2 Rsch. Menger 484. - Kress B. 5222. - Blaug 561. - Vgl. Bilbiothek a.d.

HARTLEY, David.
OSSERVAZIONI CIRCA I DOVERI E LE SPERANZE DEL GENERE UMANO, e la Verita della Religione Cristiana ... volgarizzamento di Pietro Antoniutti.
Venezia, nella Stamperia Santini, 1807 - FIRST ITALIAN TRANSLATION. - 8vo, pp. viii, 126; with contemporary small ownership stamp on title, title lightly dust-soiled, otherwise clean throughout; - uncut in recent wraps. - First Italian translation of David Hartley's Observations on Man, his Frame, his Duty, and his Expectations, first published in 1749. - Hartley's work comprises speculations in a number of fields, from neurology and psychology to Christian apologetics, and can as a whole be seen as the founding text of associationist psychology. 'The Observations gained dedicated advocates in Britain, America, and Continental Europe, who appreciated it both for its science and its spirituality. As science, the work grounds consciousness in neuro-physiology, mind in brain. On this basis, the central concept of "association," much discussed by other British philosophers and psychologists, receives distinctive treatment: the term first names the physiological process that generates "ideas," and then the psychological processes by which perceptions, thoughts, and emotions link and fuse. In keeping with this physiological approach, Hartley offers a conceptually novel account of how we learn and perform skilled actions, a dimension of human nature often left unexplored in works of philosophy. As a work on the spiritual condition of humanity, Hartley's Observations affirms universal salvation -- the assurance that all people will eventually become "partakers of the divine nature." In this regard, it presents an original model of psychological growth, which describes how the self both forms and transforms, as the person gains in "sympathy" and "theopathy" -- put simply, learns to love, both others and God' (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). - Hartley (1705-1757) was born near Halifax, studied at Cambridge, and practiced medicine in Bury St Edmunds, London, and Bath. Other works include Various conjectures on the perception, motion, and generation of ideas, and On the Truth of the Christian Religion. - Not in OCLC, which records a 1809 Italian translation of another of his works (two copies only).

HUMBOLDT, Alexander von (1769-1859); and Aime BONPLAND.
Essai sur la Géographie des Plantes, Accompagné d'un Tableau Physique des Régions Équinoxiales
Paris: Chez Fr. Schoell,1807. Quarto. (13 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches). General half-title, general title-page plus [4], 155 pp. (including the sectional half-title and title). Engraved dedication plate following sectional title, hand-coloured folding table of climate zones in rear. (Folding table expertly silked). Contemporary red morocco-backed marbled boards, spine with raised bands in compartments, richly tooled in gilt. Humboldt's first publication from his great expedition. This essay on the plants of South and Central America was written by the great explorer, Alexander von Humboldt, and his companion, Aime Bonpland, discussing in general the botanical observations of their famous expedition to colonial Spanish America in 1799-1804. It is the first publication regarding that trip, with subsequent works eventually comprised of several dozen atlases and plate volumes, as well as several series of text. At the time of publication of this part, Humboldt and Bonpland had scarcely even imagined the full extent of their publications, which took another thirty years to produce. The folding plate depicting climatic zones at differing elevations was a landmark achievement in comparative taxonomy, and is one of the most famous visual products of Humboldt's expedition displaying in one image both the breadth of his vision and the comparative scientific approach of systematic science. "In this pioneering contribution to ecology, Humboldt and Bonpland founded the study of the geographical distribution of plants" (Norman). This copy the second issue, following the first of 1805, and bound with the general title for the entire series of publications (added in 1807 when a plan for the whole publication project had been established). Taxonomic Literature 3139; Sabine 33579; Horblit 51 (for 1805 edition); Norman Library 1111 (for 1805 edition).

Juvenalis (Juvenal)
The satires of Juvenal: translated and illustrated.
Pr. by T. Bensley for Payne & MacKinlay, London 1807 - Sole edition of this translation into English of the Satires. A profusely annotated (which is what is meant by "illustrated" on the title-page) verse translation of Juvenal. Francis Hodgson (1781-1852), a close friend of Lord Byron -- who was a subscriber -- seems to have dropped his interest in the classics and later became fascinated by Lady Jane Grey, Charlemagne, mythology, and religion instead. That said, Byron thought highly of this work. 4to. [8], xxxix, [1], 572 pp. Contemporary half calf, covers detached. SALVO, Carlo, Marquis de.
Travels in the Year 1806 from Italy to England...Containing the Particulars of the Liberation of Mrs. Spencer Smith.
Portrait frontispiece of de Salvo, lx and 296 pp. 12mo, full calf, expertly rebacked many years ago. London: Printed for Richard Phillips, 1807. One of several London editions, no priority established. The Dedication is signed by W. Fraser who stated that he translated the narrative from a manuscript of the Marquis de Salvo. Mrs. Constance Spencer Smith was one of the daughters of Baron Herbert (for many years Austrian Internuncio at Constantinople) who was the wife of Spencer Smith, English Minister at Stuttgard, and sister-in-law of Admiral Sir Sidney Smith. Mrs. Smith, while staying in Venice with her sister, the Countess Attems, on account of her health was arrested in 1806 by the order of Napoleon, who planned, it was said, on sending her as a state prisoner to Valenciennes. The Marquis de Salvo, a young Sicilian was a friend of the Countess Attems, and a profound admirer of her sister. He determined to rescue her from the French police. This is the account of his successful venture. Set against the turbulent and ever-changing times of the Napoleonic Wars.Byron, a few years after this narrative was written had a brief affair with Mrs. Smith.

London:: Bulmer & Co.,, 1807.. FIRST EDITION. . 4to.. With 12 engraved plates (1 folding), donors list and index. Blue wrappers; an excellent copy mostly uncut and unopened. First edition. Herschel admits that he was never impressed by Newton's explanation of the appearance of the coloured rings when laying two prisms on each other, and proceeds to detail his own experiments. Herschel's expertise in making and using all types of lenses provides a significant amount of support to the results. Herschel's second article, on the communication to him from Dr. Olbers of the discovery of a "new celestial body" is especially interesting, given Herschel's own fame as the discoverer of Uranus.#11;This is the complete Part II of the Philosophical Transactions for the year 1807, and also includes: #11;ALLEN, William, "On the quantity of carbon in carbonic acid and on the nature of the diamond."#11;CARNE, Joseph, "An account of the Relistian tin mine."#11;MARCET, Alexander, "An analysis of the waters of the Dead Sea and the River Jordan."#11;WOLLASTON, "On fairy-rings."#11;HOME, Everard, "Observations on the structure of the stomachs of different animals, with a view to elucidate the process of converting animal and vegetable substances into chyle."#11;BANKS, "On the economy of bees."#11;SCHROETER, John Jerome, "Observations and measurements of the planet Vesta."#11;PEPYS, William Hasledine, "A new Eudiometer, accompanied with experiments, elucidating its application."#11;

Printed for the author, Salisbury 1807 - First Edition. 8, 39pp., roan backed marbled boards, oval printed label. Lacks lower board, later leaves a bit dog-eared and one blank corner of last leaf slightly defective, otherwise a good copy; signed at end of preface by the author and the imprint amended in his autograph. The format is notable: the upper board has a hinged cut-out centre and the front end-papers consist of two plates, the second being an empty board-mounted frame with calibrated borders; their use as an aid to proper delineation is explained in the first section. The plates in the body of the book are numbered, confusingly, 2-8, but all the 'Nine Explanatory Etchings' called for on the title-page are in fact present. Of the five copies located by COPAC only two give details of the plates and both of these have seven - a rebound copy would necessarily lack the first two. No further copies in NSTC or OCLC. Froriep, L. F

Weimar, Landes-Industrie-Comptoir, 1807. Small 8vo, xii, 52 pp. Contemporary mottled half calf over marbled boards, spine with gilt lines, red and green morocco labels with gilt titles. *In the early 19th century the very simple system of Linnaeus, with only few genera, gave way to the more elaborate and more accurate system of Lamarck. First in France, and finally in Great Britain. This is the first and quite early introduction of Lamarck's system in Germany. Friedrich [von] Froriep (1779-1847) is better known for his pioneering in endoscopy, but he also translated Dumeril's "Zoologie analytique" into German. Froriep may have added some new genera here, but this needs further research. The title page calls for a schematic plate, but there is none, and it seems that it was never inserted in this copy. Boards and spine rubbed, some loss to green spine label, small old inscriptions to front fly leaf, monogram ("C. L.") added to title page, otherwise contents clean. Rare.

Breitkopf et Härtel, Leipsic: [1807]. First Edition of one (of six) masses written by order of Prince Esterházy between 1796 and 1802. Hob. XXII/14. "Vocal music constitutes fully half of Haydn’s output. Both his first and last completed compositions were mass settings, and he cultivated sacred vocal music extensively throughout his career except during the later 1780s, when elaborate church music was inhibited by the Josephinian reforms, and the first half of the 1790s in London..." "Notwithstanding their semi-private function for the Esterházy court, Haydn’s six late masses are consummate masterworks that exhibit no trace of provinciality or the ‘occasional’. He exploits the complementary functions of soloists and chorus with inexhaustible freedom and telling effect; owing to his London experience the orchestra plays a newly prominent role. Four are in B, perhaps because Bb was Haydn’s usual highest pitch for choral sopranos (he employed the same key for the final choruses of Parts 2–3 of The Creation and Part 1 of The Seasons). The other two are the only ones for which he provided descriptive titles: the Missa in tempore belli (‘Mass in Time of War’, 1796) in C features the bright, trumpet-dominated sound typical of masses in this key; the Missa in angustiis (‘Mass in [times of] Distress’, later nicknamed ‘Nelson Mass’, 1798) in D minor and major is scored for a dark orchestra comprising only trumpets and timpani, strings and organ. Both invoke the travails of the Napoleonic wars. The Agnus Dei of the former includes threatening timpani motifs and harsh trumpet fanfares, while the Benedictus of the latter culminates in another harsh fanfare passage ‘out of context’; both influenced the Agnus Dei in Beethoven’s Missa solemnis. On the other hand, except for the sombre Kyrie and Benedictus of the ‘Nelson Mass’, both are otherwise firmly optimistic; the ending of the latter is downright jaunty." Grove Music Online Oblong folio. Original publisher's blue/gray printed wrappers. [1] (title), 2-148 pp. With a part for bassoon in contemporary manuscript notated below figured bass throughout. Wrappers detached, soiled and lacking at spine. Some light soiling and foxing. A very good copy overall.
