Examination of the Conduct of Great Britain, Respecting Neutrals
|
0. [COXE, Tench]. An Examination of the Conduct of Great Britain, Respecting Neutrals. Philadelphia: Printed by B. Graves, 1807. 72pp. Dbd. Slight agetoning. Small tear in lower inner margin of last printed leaf (no loss). A very good copy. HOWES C830 (Coxe). SHAW & SHOEMAKER 12364 (Coxe). GAINES 07-10 (Coxe). SHAW & SHOEMAKER 12972, 43708 (Madison). SABIN 43708 (Madison). The first edition of Coxe's study of Great Britain's actions since 1791, especially regarding commerce and the impressment of sailors in the tense period preceding the War of 1812. Coxe vigorously attacks England's high-handed actions as a naval power. A second edition was printed in Boston the following year. Signed in print at the end of the text by "Juriscola," Gaines attributes the pamphlet to Tench Coxe, as does Howes. Sabin assigns the work to Madison, while Shaw & Shoemaker include entries for the work under both Coxe and Madison.

The Rising sun, A Serio-comic Satiric Romance.
|
First Edition By Cervantes Hogg, F.S.M. Vol.I [II; III]. The fourth edition. Revised, corrected, and enlarged. London: Printed for Appleyards, Wimpole-street, 1807. 3 Vols., 12mo, signed and gathered in half sheets; each volume with half-title, and very large folding hand-coloured engraved frontispiece after O'Keefe; final page of volumes one and two advertisements; integral advertisement leaf at end of volume one, two at end of volume three; contemporary half-calf, marbled boards, contrasting spine label, spine ruled and lettered with shelf-mark, gilt. Calf cracking over joints and chipped at extreme head and tail bands; lacking the frontispieces and the final leaf of advertisements in volumes one and three; a little scattered foxing, mostly quite light; otherwise a nice copy. Fourth edition revised, corrected, and enlarged, of volumes one and two, first edition of volume three. Not in Sadleir; Wolff, 318, and Block, p.15 record no more than the first two volumes of the work, in first edition, the latter citing the British Library and one bookseller's copy only; CBEL likewise lists the work as in two volumes; Summers, listing the work as in three volumes, records that four editions were published in 1807, with a fifth following in 1809, a statement which is given support by Locke, Spectrum, p.115, where, listing the book under Hogg, he records a copy similar to the present one, with volumes one and two "Fourth edition, revised, corrected and enlarged, 1807", and with volume three in the first edition, as here. The disagreement between authorities as to the number of volumes, and the combination of editions found in the Locke copy and the present one, are explained by the fact that the work does seem to have appeared initially as complete in two volumes (on February 20th, 1807, if we can trust the engraving in the second volume), volume two bearing the word `Finis' at the end; whilst the third volume, as is indicated in the advertisements to volumes one and two of the present edition, appeared supplementally later the same year. The second volume of the present edition, evidently published in the Autumn or Winter of 1807, ends with the words `END OF VOL. II', whilst the advertisements make clear that the third volume had already achieved publication some time prior to August. The extent of the `revisions, corrections, and enlargements' in the present edition may perhaps be suggested by the differences in collation between the the Locke set and the first, the Locke set collating: pp.[iv]+[197]+[iii (advertisements)]; [iv]+181+[i (advertisements)]; [iv]+212+[iv (advertisements)], whilst the original edition collates: [iv]+197+[1 (bearing printer's imprint only)+[1 (advertisement)]+[1 (blank)]; [iv]+171+[1 (blank)]. One of the most celebrated political and social satires of its time; for its status as a fantasy v. Locke, Spectrum, p.115. Complete sets in the first edition are distinctly scarce. All books listed by Robert Temple are of the first edition and the first printing unless otherwise described.

Cogan, Thomas (1736-1818)
Ethical Treatise on the Passions, Founded on the Principles Investigated in the Philosophical Treatise
|
Bath. 1807. Very Good. By T. Cogan, M.D. Bath: Hazard & Binns, 1807. 2 volumes. xxviii+495+[1], viii+282+[2]pp. + front & rear blanks to both vols. Errata to the first volume on page 495, to the second volume on the recto of the unnumbered leaf following page 282. Rebound in mid-20th century black morocco spine labels, edges of both volumes marbled. Very good copies. Quite uncommon. Imprint to volume 2: Bath: printed and sold by John Binns; sold also by Cadell and Davies, London, 1810. First editions of both parts. Born in Northampshire, Cogan enrolled as a medical student at Leiden in 1765, after six years in the ministry, and was awarded his medical degree in 1767 for his dissertation, De animi pathematum, on the influence of the human passions on disease. He practiced as a physician, first in Holland, then in England, until 1780, when he retired from medicine to devote himself to literary and philosophical pursuits. Wellcome II, p. 366; Dictionary of Nineteenth-Century British Philosophers I:264-266. 2 pounds 5.7 ounces = 1.1 kg. 8.8 x 5.5 x 1.8 inches = 22 x 13.7 x 4.5cm. The second of three works Cogan published on the passions, the first being his 1800 A Philosophical Treatise on the Passions; and the last being his 1817 Ethical Questions. In the two treatises offered here Cogan applies the ideas to human conduct and morality that he had delineated in his 1800 book, in which he had tried to identify the nature of and to classify the passions, emotions, and affections of the mind. Part I (the entire first volume of the present work) is titled "On Well-Being or Happiness; in Three Disquisitions: I. On the Beneficial and Pernicious Agency of the Passions. 2. On the Intellectual Powers, as Guides and Directors in the Pursuit of Well-Being. 3. On the Nature and Sources of Well-Being." Part II (the entire second volume) is titled "On Conduct conducive to Happiness, in Two Disquisitions: I. On the influence of virtue upon personal and social happiness. II. On Morality; its nature, laws, and motives." Though Cogan was almost as ignored in his own time as he is in ours, nonetheless, as Robert Wozniak points out in his essay on Cogan in the Dict. of 19th-Cent. British Philosophers, Cogan made a number of astute observations about affect and emotion, including "what may well be the first clear distinction between sudden evaluative appraisal precipitating an emotional reaction (passion) and emotion as a bodily reaction to that appraisal. It is surely the first attempt to separate endujring evaluation (affection) from transient passion by linking passion to the sudden and powerful influence of particularly interesting or unexpected objects and events" [Dict. I:265]. .

BROOKSHAW, After George (1751-1823)
[Apples] [Striped Holland Pippin; Marygold Apple; Sullenworth's Rennet Apple; Beauty of Kent] [Pl. XC]
|
[London]: G. Brookshaw, 1807. Aquatint engraving, with some stipple, printed in colours and finished by hand. In good condition. 16 x 12 1/8 inches. 20 1/2 x 16 1/4 inches. A fine image from Brookshaw's masterpiece: 'Pomona Britannica; or, A Collection of the Most Esteemed Fruits'. George Brookshaw's 'Pomona Britannica' is the finest work on fruit and flowers ever produced. Its breathtaking images display a level of technical virtuosity and beauty that distinguish this magnificent work as a true work of art. As a retired cabinetmaker, Brookshaw produced his seminal botanical study late in his career, at first publishing it in parts and then as a complete edition in 1812. The fact that this outstanding work took ten years to complete is evident in the quality of its images and the care with which Brookshaw executed each individual picture. 'Pomona Britannica' was produced as a visual record of the best available varieties of fruit in an attempt to encourage gardeners to experiment with growing fruit, and illustrates examples found in the Royal gardens at Hampton Court, Kensington Gardens, and the private gardens of the Prince of Wales in Blackheath. 'Pomona Britannica' differs from other botanical works in its dark aquatinted backgrounds and its stylized compositions. By using aquatint to create a contrasting background, Brookshaw manages to produce a truly dramatic effect. His use of stylized composition distinguishes his pictures from the dry scientific illustrations found in other botanical studies and creates an exceptionally beautiful visual experience. 'Pomona Britannica' is not only a didactic study, it is a masterpiece of illustration in which every picture is a testament to the artist's talent and ingenuity. Cf. (Internet) -
