Cet ouvrage est tout ce qu'il y a de plus probable et sûr pour obtenir l'extrait déterminé, et gagner autant d'argent que l'on veut; cependant, par certaine méthode, l'on ne peut gagner qu'à raison des fonds que l'on y dispose. Paris, Chez l'auteur, décembre 1807, pet. in-4 de 24 et 32 pp., br., papier à la colle rose imprimé, pet. rest. au dos. Manque à Quérard. Goldsmith's-Kress, 19449-8. Édition originale. Ouvrage très rare, publié à compte d'auteur, dans lequel est exposé une méthode inventée pour «forcer la loterie à jouer progressivement sur elle-même et avec son argent.» Jean-Baptiste Marseille, mathématicien à Paris, a publié 13 livres consacrés à la loterie dont le présent ouvrage est le dernier et celui qu'il considérait comme le plus abouti. «Il me fallait, pour completter ma collection, un ouvrage qui, par ses principes, puisse être appelé le "nec plus ultra" des combinaisons sur la loterie; le "Probable incomparable" a atteint ce but.» Ce livre, pratiquement introuvable, manque à la plupart des collections que nous avons consultées: seuls les exemplaires de la BNF et de la Kress Library à Harvard ont pu être localisés. Thomas Johnes N Grand Seneschal of Champagne, written by himself containing a History of Part of the Life of Louis IX. King of France, surnamed Saint Louis, including an account of that Kings expedition to Egypt in the year MCCXLVIII. To which is added the Notes & Dissertations of M du Cange on the above, togeather with the Dissertations of M. Le Baron de La Bastie on the Life of Saint Louis, M. L'Evesque De La Ravaliere and M. Falconet on the Assassins of Syria. In brown half leather with blue marbled boards, corners and edges lightly bumped and worn, gilt tooling front and rear. Spines have been relaid retaining as much os the old as possible, gilt title and tooling. Internally bothe have blue marbled endpapers similar to covers, bookplates of Sir Edward B Baker (died 1825) to feps, text block edges are lightly blue marbled. Volume 1, half title, frontis of Saint Louis dated 1807, title page with the woodcut, pull out map of Syria and Palestine, the pull out map of the Egyptian Delta and the View of the Town and Castle of Joinville, 426 pp. Volume 2, half title, frontis showing map of Syria & Palestine and the Assassins, title page with the woodcut, contents pages and 328 pp. A wonderful copy of an important private press item. In 1802 Johnes set up a printing press at Pwllpeiran, some distance from the main house. Encouraged by his many literary friends, including George Cumberland, Robert Anderson, and Lord Chancellor Thurlow, he embarked on a prolific career as a translator of the medieval French chronicles. His early translation of Sainte-Palaye's Vie de Froissart was printed by Nichols of Fleet Street in 1801. Subsequent works, including the four-volume translation of Froissart's Chronicles (1803–5), appeared from the Hafod Press. Among other Hafod Press works were the Memoirs of John, Lord de Joinville (1807), The Travels of Bertrandon de la Brocquière (1807), and the massive four-volume Chronicles of Monstrelet (1809). Despite Johnes's rather tame (and in Walter Scott's words, ‘over-genteel’) style, he remains the only man to have undertaken the formidable task of translating Froissart's Chronicles in their entirety, and the appearance of subsequent editions until 1906 testifies to their worth. [4], (xxxviii), (426) pp. Joints rubbed; chips to head of spine; boards rubbed, worn at outer corners; some foxing to text, mainly ear ly and late; a VG clean copy otherwise, tight in the binding. Adam Oehlenschläger, poet and dramatist, was the leading figure of the Romantic movement in Denmark. His DIGTE (1803) was a landmark in Danish poetry and he became an major influence for later Danish writers. With the publication of this book (NORDIC POEMS in English), "he turned Nordic mythology and legend into a living source of inspiration for literature and cultural life and breathed new life into Danish drama" - Johan de Mylius . He visited Goethe in Weimar and Madame de Staël in Paris while abroad in 1805-09. Oehlenschläger has been known as the national poet of Denmark, and was in 1829 named Scandinavian poet laureate.

Paris, Desenne, Nicolle, 1807, 4 vol. in-8°, lxxv-346, 505, 469 et 431 pp, reliure demi-veau fauve racine (petites usures), dos lisses ornes de pieces de titre et de tomaison en maroquin rouge, petits manques aux coiffes. Edition originale sans rousseurs dans une reliure de l'epoque. Cet ouvrage qui ne parut qu'apres la mort de l'academicien, historien et poete francais Claude-Carloman de Rulhiere (1735-1791) contribua grandement a sa gloire litteraire. La cour de Russie, ayant eu connaissance de ses projets et redoutant des revelations compromettantes, demanda par voie diplomatique que certains faits fussent adoucis, mais l'auteur refusa, en promettant toutefois que rien ne serait publie avant la mort de Catherine II. Quelques fragments de cette histoire, lus par Rulhiere dans les cercles de Paris, lui ouvrirent les portes de l'Academie.

Hughes, London 1807 - An intruiging 'defence' of Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales, unfortunate German second wife of the Prince Regent, later George IV, who had been accused in an anonymous pamphlet of infidelity.This refutation was issued by the same publisher who had circulated the charges - "monstrous injuries heaped upon an illustrious female, by and with the consent of her (Royal) consort; who, if not the original mover, is, by some, stated to be the aider and abettor of her vile calumniator; and, by others, the least violent, he is accused of an ungenerous apathy and unbecoming disregard to general censure."The book is bound in original pale blue paper boards with original title label on front board. The titling is printed in black with a royal crest. Comprises x prelim pages, text of 189 pages plus three pages of publisher's titles, mainly novels, for which this publisher was renowned. Bumped and chipped at head and tail of spine with a quarter inch loss of the blue paper at head of spine. There is a two inch split to the bottom of the front hinge. There are also a few other splits to the blue paper on other parts of the hinges and the spine generally is somewhat worn and darkened. The top corner of the front board is bumped and the top corner of the back board is bumped with a split in the blue paper. The endpapers are lightly foxed with two broad strips of dark offsetting on the front endpapers. The paper is rough cut and the pages are of differing sizes. The text is clean and clear. Apart from the faults noted the book is still firmly sewn in its binding and is in good condition for its age. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Varsovie, 8 janvier, 1807, - in-8, 1 pp. contre-collée sur papier fort au coin sup. gauche ; sous chemise abondamment annotée. Intéressant rapport du général Gouvion adressé à Napoléon, concernant l'arrivée des troupes à Varsovie après la bataille de Pultusk ; nous sommes au début de la campagne de Pologne, Napoléon sétait installé à Varsovie tout le mois de janvier prendre ses quartiers d'hiver : "( ) Quelques détachemens arrêtés par la rupture des ponts de Cazoul et du Bug, n'ont pu se cantonner dans les villages à portée des ponts, et sont rentrés à Varsovie ; on les a placé à la cazerne des trois couronnes, ainsi que les hommes isolés qui arrivent encore ( ) on établit à la même cazerne un dépot de convalescent pour des hommes que les médecins font sortir des hopitaux ( )." Ancien officier d'artillerie engagé en 1768, Louis-Jean-Baptiste Gouvion (1752-1823) fut nommé général en 1793 par Dubois-Crancé à l'Armée des Alpes, servit ensuite à l'Armée d'Italie, envoyé à Toulon en 1795, puis à l'Armée du Nord commander la 1ère division en 1796. À l'Armée de Hollande en 1799, sous Vandamme, il s'illustra à la bataille de Bergen où Brune le nomma général de division sur le champ de bataille, remplaça ensuite Vandamme dans le corps français en Batavie. Inspecteur de gendarmerie en 1801, chargé d'étouffer les troubles dans l'Ouest en 1803, Gouvion fut appelé en novembre 1806 à Berlin par Napoléon qui lui confia le gouvernement de Varsovie. Gouvion avait été nommé sénateur en 1805, créé comte d'Empire en 1808.

( VIII,343; 238; 303; 302 pp.); 8! menor (16,5 cm.); Plena Piel epoca, lomera lisa con 2 tejuelos y hierros dorados.- En general muy buen estado. Tan solo las 5 primera hojas del tomo 1! tienen una mancha de humedad en el angulo inferior externo en intensidad decreciente, ademas las 2 primeras estan muy ligeramente tostadas por la acidez. La portada del tomo 4! tiene algunas manchitas de oxido o tinta marron de la epoca. La encuadernacion original de la epoca se encuentra en general bien, tan solo tiene algunas rozaduras que han sido restauradas, el tomo 2! en la parte superior de la lomera tiene un pequeno degarro de la piel, que ha sido restaurado en lo posible.*

Bisesti, 1807., Verona, - In 8° (mm 207x130); pagg. 88, con una tavola in rame f.t. in antiporta illustrante strumenti per la caccia. Timbro antico di collezione parzialmente abraso al frontespizio. Cartone coevo decorato. Poemetto in endecasillabi sciolti (la prima edizione è del 1775) in cui il Tirabosco (1707-1773) canta l'amenità della campagna veronese contrapponendola alle brighe cittadine e presenta i diversi modi di catturare gli uccelli quali la ragnaia e il boschetto d'estate, il roccolo d'autunno; interessante la parte relativa all'aucupio elettrico, forse ispirato alle recenti scoperte voltiane. Buon esemplare, con minime fioriture e tracce di umidità. Qualche menda alla legatura.

Erste Ausgabe. - Alles zu Lebzeiten Erschienene der Geschichte des bayerischen Kurfürsten Maximilian I. (1573-1651), reicht bis zum Jahr 1610. Der Publizist und Historiker Wolf (1761-1808) war nach seiner Rückkehr nach München 1804 von Maximilian Joseph mit der Abfassung des vorliegenden Werkes betraut worden, seit 1807 gab er die "Münchner Zeitung" heraus. Die beiden ersten Bände konnte er vor seinem mutmaßlichen Selbstmord 1808 noch veröffentlichen, Band III stammt zum größten Teil noch von ihm und wurde von Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Breyer 1809 herausgegeben, der abschließende Band IV (1811) wurde von Breyer verfaßt. - "Auf gründlichen archivalischen Studien beruhend, darf die Geschichte Maximilian's I, wenn man den Maßstab der Zeit anlegt, als eine vorzügliche Leistung bezeichnet werden. Aus dem Schoße der Münchener Akademie war bis dahin kein historisches Werk hervorgegangen, das, einem ebenso bedeutenden Stoffe gewidmet, Sorgfalt der Forschung, strenge Objectivität, wohl abgewogenes Urtheil, Reinheit der Sprache und Geschmack der Darstellung in gleich erfreulicher Weise vereinigt hätte" ( Sigmund von Riezler in: ADB XLIII, 784 f.). - Vorsätze gering gebräunt, mit altem Besitzvermerk und handschriftlicher Signaturnummer in Rot, insgesamt sauber und frisch. The lengthy biographical essay is followed by scores of verse offerings by prominent Italian literati. There was another issue with a different title printed this year; both issues are illustrated in Brooks. This copy we offer is the first listed by Brooks and presumaly the first issue. London, 1807. 8vo, pp. [2], 5, v-xii, 405 (i.e. 411); frontispiece portrait; nearly 9,000 items priced in ink throughout in the margins within red rules; contemporary half calf scuffed and rubbed; a good copy. One of the great libraries devoted to theatrical literature, also rich in poetry and pamphlets. Reed (1742-1807) counted among his friends both Dr. Johnson and James Boswell, as well as others of their circle. Dibdin, Bibliomania, pp. 454-6: "Few collections attracted greater attention before, and during, the sale of it than the library of Mr. Isaac Reed: a critic and literary character of very respectable second-rate reputation. The public Journals teemed, for a time, with book-anecdotes concerning this collection; and the Athenaeum, Monthly Mirror, Censura Literaria, and European Magazine, struck out a more bold outline of the Bibliotheca Reediana than did the generality of their fellow Journals. Reed's portrait is prefixed to the European Magazine, the Monthly Mirror, and the catalogue of his own books: it is an indifferently stippled engraving, copied from a fine mellow mezzotint! The preface to the catalogue was written by the Rev. H. J. Todd. It is brief, judicious, and impressive!" Fletcher, English Book Collectors, pp. 269-270.

Scattered foxing, front endpaper loose. Good+. Smith and Lloyd were prosecuted for their connection with the Miranda Expedition. Miranda had a "passion for becoming the Washington of South America." I Adams History of the U.S. 733. Lionized in America, he gathered round him "every ruined adventurer in society," including "a number of Aaron Burr's friends" like Smith, surveyor of the Port of New York. "By Smith's advice Miranda hired the ship 'Leander,' owned by one Ogden.; with Smith's active aid Miranda next bought arms and supplies, and enlisted men." Jefferson "removed Smith from his office of surveyor, and caused both Smith and Ogden to be indicted" for violating the neutrality laws. Id. A jury acquitted them. FIRST EDITION. Marvin 472. II Harv.
