GRUNER, A.
|
J.C.B. Mohr,, Frankfurt, 1806 - Zweite unveränderte mit vier neuen Briefen vermehrte Ausgabe. Sm.8vo. Orig. boards, with red title-label. With 2 folding engraved plates with tables of Pestalozzi's method of teaching numbers and fractions. XXX, (4), 404 (2) pp. Second enlarged edition of an explanation and full exposition of Pestalozzi's teaching methods to promote their introduction into German schools, written in the form of letters sent from Pestalozzi's Educational Institute in Burgdorf by the headmaster of a model-school in Frankfurt. Gruner came to Burgdorf with much prejudice wanting to prove the "nothingness" of Pestalozzi's method, and had planned to stay two weeks. In the end he remained three months and became so much a "Paulus" out of a "Saulus", that he wanted to present Pestalozzi's method as absolutely natural and self-evident. He reworked the letters he actually wrote from Burgdorf, which vividly picture the teaching in Burgdorf and the meetings and conversations Gruner had with Pestalozzi. They are full of interesting details about the children and staff as well. The book contains 26 numbered letters, and the four new letters, extra added to the present second edition, are put at the end and numbered anew 1 to 4. The work is dedicated to the famous German pedagogue, Christian Gotthilf Salzmann, founder and director of the "Philantropinum", at Schnepfenthal. Good copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed, small library-label on spine; old owner's ms. entry and library-number at top of title, and several old owner's stamps on first blank). Israel, Pestalozzi Bibliogr. I, 24 n. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

DALBERG (Charles Théodore Antoine) ].
De l'Influence des Beaux Arts sur la Félicité Publique.
|
Ratisbonne, chez Montag et Weiss, 1806. - in-8. 106pp. 1f. Barbier, II, p. 917.

- 32 engraved plates (one with an overlaid flap). xii, [41], 353 pp.; 2 p.l., 355-723, [8] pp. Two vols. Large 4to, cont. half-calf & drab boards, (recent) red lettering pieces on spines. London: Longman et al., 1806. First edition and a nice set of the authors first major work. "Loudons mature statement of his theoretical position, strongly advocating the ideas of Uvedale Price and relentless in his criticism of the affectedly graceful style of Brown. Loudon lays down his standards of beauty in two essays on taste and on painting, and then considers the elementary branches of the art of forming a residence (architecture, agriculture and gardening). Volume two is devoted to picturesque improvement, a term proposed by Loudon to replace landscape gardening. The appendix (which Loudon omitted from the second edition) is a spirited criticism of Reptons writings and his use of slides over sketches. The plates were engraved after Loudons own drawings."B. Weinreb, Cat. 54. Garden Architecture and Landscape, 285. Loudon (1783-1843), has been called the "most distinguished gardening author of the age" (by A.J. Downing). He was "a designer of parks and gardens but the chief reason for Loudons historical importance is undoubtedly the quality and volume of his literary output this immensely energetic Scotsman published approximately 60 million words on gardening, horticulture, architecture, agriculture, and other related topics. His books, encyclopaedias, and magazines were essential reference books in their day and remain an indispensable source for historians of the period."The Oxford Companion to Gardens, p. 344. A very good set. Armorial bookplate of George Wilbraham. ? Fussell, III, pp. 88-98 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Erlangen, Johann Jakob Palm, 1806. 8vo. Contemporary half calf. Title-label a bit worn. Old owner'sname (Wibel) to front free end-paper and title page. A nice and clean copy. XLIX, (1), 407 pp, (1). ¶ First edition of one of the earliest surviving of Harl's publications, in which he presented his view on how to reform the agricultural-sector.Johann Paul Harl (1772-1842) functioned as a priest and taught pedagogy in Salzburg in his early years. He gave up his position in the early 1800ies and moved to Berlin. Here he turned his attention to philosophical studies and economic and political science. In 1805 he was appointed professor of philosophy and Cameralwissenschaft in Erlangen. Harl was a favorite of Bavarian Count and Minister Maximilian von Montgelas and Montgelas appointed Harl the title of councilor and honored him with the Knight's Cross of the French Legion of Honor. After Montgelas retirement Harl moved to Nuremberg where he spent the rest of his years. His philosophical views were deeply influenced by Kant; "Another self-styled disciple, the former priest Johann Paul Harl, was also adept at clothing older ideas in Kantian terminology. Newly appointed at Erlangen in 1805, he claimed in his systematic work of that year that the sciences of state were badly in need of his first principles, a "metaphysics of the state"." (Lindenfeld, David F., The Practical Imagination: The German Sciences of State in the Nineteenth Century, University Of Chicago Press, 1997) During his lifetime he gradually lost more and more of his reputation. By his contemporaries he was judged very severely. Amongst others, German jurist Robert von Mohl called his writings "bottomless uselessness" and "as bad as possible.". Because of his declining academic reputation he commited suicide in 1842. At present most of his writings have been lost.
