|
Nürnberg, Felßecker, 1782-83. (8), 564 (recte 544); 510 SS. Mit 2 gest.Front. und 2 gest.Titelvignetten. Pbde.d.Zt. Kippenberg I,6; Rammensee 358.

[SIEGE OF GIBRALTAR, 1780.]
A view of Gibraltar, with Sir George Brydges Rodney coming to its relief, & bringing with him five men of war, part of Don Juan de Langara’s fleet, captured off St Vincent in his way to that garrison, on the 16th of January 1780. To his Royal Highness Prince William Henry, Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, this plate, representing a scene the result of an action so advantageous and honorable to his country, and in which signal service his Royal Highness sustained so a glorious a share, is, by permission, most humbly and respectfully dedicated, by Robert Wilkinson and Robert Pol...

London, R. Wilkinson & R. Pollard, 1 June 1782. A fine view of Gibraltar, drawn by the marine painter Dominic Serres and engraved by Robert Pollard. It depicts the British garrison, with Rodney’s squadron at anchor and several of Admiral Langara’s Spanish fleet, which had been captured during the celebrated ‘Moonlight battle’.In 1779, Spain had entered the American War of Independence against Britain with the direct aim of capturing Gibraltar and had soon sent an army to besiege the British garrison there. The following year it was decided that a naval squadron under Rodney should be sent to relieve Gibraltar. ‘Though some ministers (Sandwich in particular) were sceptical, the British public was deeply persuaded of the value of Gibraltar (and Minorca which depended on it), and the ministry felt obliged to give it a high priority’ (Rodger, Command of the ocean p. 343). The expedition was an outstanding success. ‘On 7 January 1780, off Finisterre, Rodney largely captured a convoy of sixteen Spanish ships and a few days later, off Cape St Vincent, he met and, in the famous Moonlight battle, comprehensively defeated Admiral Langara, the Spanish commander. Rodney’s force was much superior to Langara’s but the nature of the battle, a night attack in heavy seas with an immediate order by Rodney to chase, marked the aggressive approach that Rodney habitually brought to his actions. Six of the nine Spanish ships were captured and one was blown up’ (Oxford DNB). Gibraltar was relieved and Britain’s sea command in the Mediterranean was secured. 570 x 770 mm, engraving; a fine example with wide margins.

BLACKWELL, Elizabeth
A Curious Herbal, containing five hundred cuts of the most useful plants, which are now used in the practice of physick... To which is added a short description of the plants; and their common uses in physick.
|
London, C. Nourse, [1737-] 1782 2 vols, folio (463 x 284 mm), text engraved throughout, with two titles, two dedication leaves (to Richard Mead and Isaac Rand), one leaf of commendation from the Royal College of Physicians, one leaf of ëPublic Recommendationí, two leaves ëEnglish indexí, two leaves ëCatalogus plantarumí, 125 leaves of descriptive text and 500 hand-coloured engraved plates; a fine, clean, and bright copy in contemporary diced russia gilt, covers with greek-key border in gilt, Botfield arms in centre, spines in seven compartments with double-helix roll tool. £35,000 First edition (later issue, see below), finely coloured large paper copy, extremely rare in this condition. This work was one of the first botanical publications by a woman, one of the first English botanical books to be issued in parts and one of the first with hand-coloured plates. Elizabeth Blackwell (bap. 1707 - 1778) undertook the publication of her herbal at the suggestion of Sir Hans Sloane in order to ransom her husband from debtorsí prison. She took lodgings near the Chelsea Physic Garden where she drew and engraved the plants growing there. She was assisted in her work by the botanist Philip Miller, head of the garden staff. Blackwell engraved both the text and plates, and also handled the accounting and marketing of the work. The book was a commercial success and she succeeded in rescuing the family from debt and freeing her husband, although to no avail: he was later beheaded for his part in a political assassination plot in Sweden. The work was originally issued in 125 parts in all, in three formats: uncoloured (one shilling per part), coloured (two shillings per part), and large-paper coloured. The work is bibliographically complex and as Henrey noted ëthere is no uniformity with regard to the number of dedications contained in the various issues, or in the order in which the preliminary leaves are arrangedí. Several issues exist, but all comprise the original engraved sheets, both plates and text, the only difference being the presence or absence of some of the dedicatory material and differing dates and publishers on the title pages. John Nourse, who was involved in the publication from the beginning, continued to reissue the original work, but with updated titlepages. Provenance: Arthur Cuthbert (ca 1734-1788) of Woodcote Hall, Epsom, engraved armourial bookplate; Beriah Botfield (1807-1863) with gilt arms on covers; Marquesses of Bath, Longleat House; Christieís London, Printed books and manuscripts from Longleat, 13 June 2002, lot 131 Henrey 455; Great flower books p 50; Hunt 510; Lisney 175 and 180; Nissen 168
