Burney, Charles
A General History Of Music from the earliest ages to the present period. To which is prefixed, A dissertation on the music of the ancients
London:: for the Author,, 1782-89. Second edition of volume 1, first editions of volumes 2-4.. Contemp calf-backed marbled boards, all covers detached, spines worn, lacks labels; bookplates of Worcester Library; foxing, some dampstains, paper lightly toned (partly printed on blue tint paper), offsetting from plates, large copies--uncut.. 4to. 4 vols. 272 x 217mm.. 3 Frontis. and port. of Burney by Bartolozzi, 8 plates & figures (4 folding); numerous engraved pages of music. The work was from the outset very successful, and was generally pronounced superior to the similar undertaking of Sir John Hawkins...Burney, possessed of far greater knowledge than Hawkins, better judgment, and a better style, frequently wrote about things which he had not sufficiently examined...Both works are of the highest value, and form the foundation of nearly every English work on musical history which has appeared since..."[DNB] "The first volume of BurneyOsHistory was out of print within a few weeks of publication, and Burney had decided by April of 1776 to prepare a second edition of the volume. The second edition of volume 1 takes account of a number of suggestions made by Thomas Twining. The "Dissertation" no longer features on the title-page of the second edition and becomes part of the Preface, while the "Questions and Answers" are transmuted into#11;"Definitions." Many passages from the first edition are radically altered or omitted. When publication of the four volumes was completed in 1789, Mary Wollstonecraft was one of the reviewers. Writing in the February, 1790 issue of the Analytical Review, she said "Every lover of this captivating art, must thank the author, emphatically, for his unwearied researches, whilst the unimpassioned philosopher may coldly connect a more grand and comprehensive interest with the enquiry, and drawing metaphysical inferences from the ingenuity displayed in the progressive improvement of music, advance a step further into the terra incognita of the human mind." COYER, Gabriel Francois (1707-1782)
Oeuvres complettes.
Paris, veuve Duchesne 1782-1783. 7 volumes. 12mo. With engraved oval portrait of the author in volume 1 and another portrait in volume 6. Contemp. calf, backs richly gilt with double labels, triple line gilt borders on all sides, marbled endpapers, marbled edges. Faint water stain in upper margin of 3 volumes, minor wear to extremities. A fine set. First and only collective edition. The abbe Gabriel Francois Coyer was born in the Franche-Comte from a poor family and educated by the Jesuits. The short biographical sketch of the author included in the first volume records that he left the order in 1736 'because of his love for freedom and peace', which resulted in a conflict with his superiors. He became secretary to the prince de Turenne and chaplain general to the cavalry, which brought him to the battle of Lawfelt (Lauffeld) and the siege of Bergen-op-Zoom in 1747. He held various other official positions and made travels to Italy and England, where he became a member of the Royal Society. His biographer characterizes him as 'an enemy by nature of fanatism, intolerance and superstition'. Most of his works are of economic interest and well represented in the economic collections of Kress, Goldsmiths', Einaudi (1381-1390) and INED (1224-1233). *This collective edition not in Kress, Goldsmiths', Einaudi or INED. CCFr records 2 sets only (BnF and Mediatheque J.J.Rousseau, Chambery). NUC ('3 vols') locates 3 sets. OCLC gives 5 locations (COO, RRR, EEM, PUL and Oxford). COPAC records the Oxford set only. DIONIS (P.)
P., Mequignon, 1782; . P., Mequignon, 1782; in 8, 1 pl. representant le jardin royal, 1 portrait, 1 frontispice, 917pp., 61 pl. gravees, demi-basane ep., (coif. usee, coins emousses). Ex-libris J.C.A. . The present work and his L'Anatomie de l'homme were Dionis' most important contributions. This book became extremely popular and was widely used as a textbook. It was published in many editions... The text reveals that Dionis was a surgeon with compassion for his patients and that he relied heavily on a thorough knowledge of anatomy. The volume contains many illustrations that depict the surgical instruments and other paraphernalia required for a wide variety of surgical procedures . (Heirs of Hippocrates N 650 1707 ed.). 1782 newspaper GEORGE WASHINGTON's DENTIST 1st Illustrated Dental AD / defeat of Cornwallis at Battle of Yorktown VIRGINIA
Boston, MASSACHUSETTS 1782 - COMPLETE ORIGINAL American Revolutionary War newspaper, the Continental Journal (Boston, MA) dated June 27, 1782. Inside page essay that refers to the recent defeat of British General Cornwallis by American General George Washington. This battle ended the American Revolution for all practical purposes. There is also news of the negotiations going on over the ending of the Revolutionary war and the recognition of the Independence of the United States by Great Britain. There is also a back page, 6" x 4" ILLUSTRATED AD placed by a Revolutionary War era American dentist, ISAAC GREENWOOD, the father of the FIRST AMERICAN BORN DENTIST, John Greenwood who was the dentist for GEORGE WASHINGTON. This is the FIRST and earliest illustrated dental ad in a US newspaper !! Great newspaper to frame and hang in a present day dental office. The Siege of Yorktown or Battle of Yorktown in 1781 was a decisive victory by a combined assault of American forces led by General George Washington and French forces led by General Comte de Rochambeau over a British Army commanded by General Lord Cornwallis. It proved to be the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War, as the surrender of Cornwalliss army (the second major surrender of the war) prompted the British government to eventually negotiate an end to the conflict. Dr. John Greenwood (1760-1819) was George Washington's personal dentist, often called the Father of Modern Dentistry, was responsible for designing Washington's famous dentures, which were not wood but carved from hippopotamus tusk. He invented the first known "dental foot engine" in 1790. He was the son of Isaac Greenwood, the first native-born American dentist. Good condition. There are two light brown stains on the newspaper. This listing includes the complete entire original newspaper, NOT just a clipping or a page of it.

VALLE, Guglielmo DELLA;
Hayden B. AAN HET VOLK VAN NEDERLAND; OF, BEWYZEN EN CONSIDERATIEN OVER DE VOORDEELEN DER NEGOTIE MET DE NOORD AMERICAANEN. IN DE VEREENIGDE NEDERLANDEN, (1782).
8vo. Unbound, uncut, loose in paper wrappers. With typographical vignette on title. 16 pp. Rare Dutch pamphlet written during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784) and the American War of Independence ( from 1776 onwards) urging a peace with England in order to secure free trade with the United States. The pamphlet is divided into three parts: (1) a letter by a 'gentleman from Leyden' to 'one of his friends in Amsterdam' (pp. 3-8); (2) the 'Concept request' directed to States of Holland and Westfriesland to realize the author's objective (pp. 9-12); (3) a letter to a 'gentleman in the province of Overijssel' on the same subject (pp. 13-16). In the first part, the anonymous author argues that the Dutch have nothing to gain by war, only to lose, because it severely hurts the overseas trade. Therefore, the Dutch should accept a peace offer recently made by England. He explains the advantages of the North American trade, being a cure for a revival of the Dutch languishing trade and commerce. According to the author, the Dutch should move fast and take over this trade, before the British would make peace with the United States and re-establish their own trade with North America. Since British naval dominance kept Dutch ships out of American ports, peace with Great Britain would be a prerequisite. Good copy. Muller, Books on America 1639; Knuttel 19963.

Becattini Francesco [già attribuito a Modesto Rastrelli]
Tagli a spruzzi rossi. Moreni, I, 361. Cfr.
