Madrid. Imp. de Antonio de Sancha. 1782. 4to. XVI p., inc portada., 387 pgs. XLVIII págs. de los documentos inéditos pertenecientes a la ciudad de Gibraltar. Incluye un grabado plegado "Nueva vista de Gibraltar, levantada sobre los mas exactos planos y modernos documentos del año de 1782. Plena piel de la época con nervios, hilos, florones, hierros y tejuelo actual. Cortes en rojo. El grabado está restaurado y reforzado por detrás. Ejemplar algo manoseado pero mas que aceptable con refuerzos en las puntas. Durante la Guerra de Sucesión Española, entre Borbones y Austrias tras la muerte de Carlos. Inglaterra y Holanda, aliados del pretendiente austriaco, el Archiduque Carlos, atacan con una flota conjunta varias localidades de la costa sur española. El 4 de agosto de 1704, tras un gran bombardeo, ocupan Gibraltar e izan la bandera del pretendiente en la fortaleza. La mayor parte de la población gibraltareña huye de la ciudad, estableciéndose en la zona (San Roque y en Algeciras, despoblada y en ruinas hasta entonces). La posesión británica sería reconocida en el Tratado de Utrecht en 1713, que puso final a la guerra. Firmado el Tratado de Utrecht queda introducida la dinastía de la Casa Borbón y la "pérdida" de Gibraltar. Esta obra se tradujo al inglés en 1845 por J. Bell. Palau: 140750.

A few leaves lightly browned, but a bright copy. Third edition. Bernardo Ward was an Irishman by descent and settled in Spain about 1750 to study the economic and social condition of the country and its American colonies, and the means of remedying the state of the poor. The results of his investigations were published posthumously in 1779 (twice), and again in 1787. Palgrave calls it 'perhaps the best digested and most methodical book written on these topics in Spain during the [eighteenth] century'. Ward particularly criticizes the prevailing system of taxation and his suggestions include the suppression of exclusive privileges and of the exorbitant export duties on manufactures, the exemption of national manufactures from inland taxation, the founding of a Land Bank, etc. The Proyecto economico has appended Ward's views on the poor Obra pia. Medio de remediar la miseria de la gente pobre de Espana, published separately already in 1750. Ward here promotes a more rational and efficient use of the money now spent on alms and emphasizes that Spain could benefit from the application of the idle poor to useful tasks. *Kress B.530. Erste Ausgabe, wie alle Bücher des Verfassers sehr selten. - Goedeke VII,550,38,4 - Holzmann-Bohatta III,8692 - Hayn-Gotendorf II,223 - Ebeling I,107ff. (sehr ausführlich) - Kaldewey, Hehres und Triviales V,51: "Bucher gehört zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern der komischen Literatur in Dtschl. vor Jean Paul. Mit glänzendem Humor und beißender Satire geißelt er die Mißstände des geistlichen Standes. Entschiedener Gegner der Jesuiten in Bayern." - Anton von Bucher (1746-1817), Zögling des Münchner Jesuiten-Gymnasiums, danach radikaler, aber immer humorvoller "Feind der jesuitischen Dressur" (Scheel, Süddt. Jakobiner S.647). Die später namhaften Aufklärer L.Westenrieder, A.Zaupser und der Verleger J.B.Strobl waren seine Mitschüler. Als einer der bedeutendsten süddeutschen Reformer war ihm die Neugestaltung des Erziehungswesens in Bayern ein besonderes Anliegen. Bereits 1778 in seinen Funktionen eingeschränkt, verlor er als Mitglied des Illuminatenordens 1785 die Ämter, die er neben seinem Amt als Pfarrer bekleidete, ließ sich aber nicht von seiner radikalaufklärerischen Haltung abbringen. "Um 1800 unterstützte er die 'Patrioten-Partei', die eine republikanische Umwälzung in Bayern anstrebte. . Heute noch sehr lesenswert sind seine Satiren, die "besten [erschienen] zwischen 1782 und 1784, in denen der Volksaufklärer, die Form der erbaulichen Devotionalheftlein übernehmend, Auswüchse des Katholizismus und die Gegenaufklärung angriff. Seine Satiren, die der . Forschung weitgehend unbekannt geblieben sind, zeichnen sich durch die eindrucksvolle Verbindung von bildkräftiger, bisweilen derber Sprache, . mit Sinn für Handlungskomik und einer realitätsnahen Darstellung von Volkscharakteren aus. . Bucher spielt souverän mit allen überlieferten Formen religiöser Gebrauchs- und Erbauungsliteratur" (Killy II,279). - "Ueber das 'geistliche Pferderennen' urtheilt Klessing [der Hrsg. von Buchers Gesammelten Werken]: es war eine sinnige Idee des Verfassers in Form einer Neujahrspredigt den Zeitwechsel mit der Erscheinung eines neugebornen Prinzen zu vergleichen, und ihm zu Ehren den Zuhörern ein Pferderennen, Souper und Ball zu versprechen. durch diesen spaßhaften Titel fesselt er die Erwartung seiner Leser bis zum letzten Blatt, auf welchem er mit stets gleichbleibender Laune erst auftischt, was er im Eingange seiner lockenden Ankündigung verheißen hatte. Das Mahl besteht nämlich in dem himmlischen Lamme, das Ziel des Rennens ist der Beichtstuhl, die Zuhörer aber sind die Rennmeister und ihre Gelüste und Leidenschaften, wonach sie jagen und laufen, die Rennpferde" (Ebeling I,121). - Alter Namenseintrag auf dem vorderen Innendeckel, teilweise etwas gebräunt. A view of the Stockholm Stock Exchange. This plate was planned to be a part of the never published work "Holmia illustrata". The plate was engraved at the expense of the Mayor of Halmstad Erik C. Säfström. Snack was a talented engraver who learned his skills as a pupil to Per Floding and at the Art Academy. He died young, only 31 one years old in 1787. Printed on Whatman paper. Fine condition.

Contemporary calf, spine worn; foxing throughout, light water damage on the upper corners of the preliminaries, repair to the folding portrait of Collinson. This second collection of Fothergill's published papers contains twenty-five of his most valuable works, five of which are Garrison and Morton titles. Included is his most famous "Account of the Putrid Sore Throat," which was the first clear recognition of diphtheria in England and is a model of clinical description. Other works include the first descriptions of facial neuralgia, migraine, and scarlatinal angina. A Supplement includes two additional works, "Some account of the late Peter Collinson" and "An essay on the character of the late Alexander Russell, M.D., F.R.S.#11;Fothergill (1712-80) was a physician and philanthropist who had an avid interest in botany. He also worked with Benjamin Franklin to draw up a scheme of reconciliation between England and the colonies. Franklin summed up his character by saying, "I can hardly conceive that a better man has ever existed."#11;

Les pieces liminaires et le texte, semblables dans les deux tirages et avec la meme collation, sont d'une typographie et d'une presentation legerement differentes. L'existence de deux tirages differents de l'edition de 1782 au format in-8 n'est pas signale par les bibliographes ; des indices contradictoires empechent de donner la priorite a l'une d'entre elles. Sans les 8 pp. du catalogue Belin. « Un des ouvrages de voyages en Suisse les plus classiques de la fin du XVIII° siecle » (Perret 1159) ; Labarere 433. Les Lettres XXII et XXIII (pp. 70 a 140 du tome 2) concernent la Vallee de Chamonix. Bel exemplaire.

Dublin : Printed for C. Jackson, 1782. FIRST IRISH EDITION, pages xii, 252, 12mo, contemporary calf, neatly rebacked, with label, gilt : light browning and title-page skilfully repaired : a very good copy. ESTC has L, D and Cornell, but the D copy is in fact a microfilm copy. Not in Dt on-line. COPAC adds NLS. "Isabella" is the Italian nun and "Mr. Croll" the English gentleman in this epistolary novel, which was first published at London in 1781. Croll woos Isabella, wins her heart, abandons her, and returns to England ; Isabella dies a shunned and shamed, yet honorable, woman. Combe, satirical poet, hack writer, translator, ghost writer, editor, fabricator of letters (especially those to or by Laurence Sterne), employed as a propagandist by the Pitt administration, 1788-1806. His Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque, with illustrations by Rowlandson, won acclaim and was followed by other collaborations. His life was less picturesque than picaresque. He was imprisoned for debt more than once.

This Itallian translation from the Latin was done in 1782. Morosini's original work covered the years 1521-1569 in Venice's history.. First Edition. Half-Leather. A la suite de quelques observations astronomiques, l'auteur decrit quelques nouveaux systemes politiques mis en applications dans certains endroits des futurs Etats-Unis. Il decrit aussi les moeurs et le mode de vie des habitants de diverses colonies. L'economie et le commerce de ces villes sont analyses selon les centres d'interet physiocratiques de l'epoque. Ecclesiastique, l'auteur s'est aussi interesse a la diversite des opinions religieuses des habitants de ces regions. Il a enfin decrit une campagne militaire francaise dans l'interieur des terres.

Sabin 72032; Fay 16; Monaghan 1241; Howes 361; Leclerc 999; Echeverria & Wilkie 782/70; not in JFBL. First edition. 'Robin was, upon Franklin's recommendation, attached to the army of Rochambeau as chaplain ..... Bernard Fay describes his book as 'rather ridiculous and dull'. This was substantially the opinion of his contemporaries. When the book was first published Garat gave it a trenchant review in Le Mercure de France. He said that Robin was to seasick to note the crossing ..... He (Robin) illustrated the hospitality of the Americans by remarking that the wife of the host frequently shared her bed with gentleman quests. Vital statistics he gathered by studying tombstones' (Monaghan, op.cit.) Leclerc remarks 'Relation tres-estimee.' 'Robin landed in Boston in June 1781, just as the French army was leaving Newport, accompagnied the troops on the march to Yorktown, and apparently returned to France soon after the victory. This work consists of a series of letters and covers the period 14 June-15 November 1781' (Echeverria & Wilkie).

FIRST EDITION of a richly illustrated baroque writing and drawing manual, also containing a variety of miscellaneous information (e. g., formulas and techniques for artists (including materials used, instructions for constructing sundials, practical hints for insect collectors, 1770-71 art auction prices, etc.). Included are illustrations of a perpetual wall calendar with details of all the moving parts; the use of optical instruments for making silouettes; monograms templates; emblems; alchemical formulas; geometrical and astronomical figures; depicting emotion; making optical plates. A beautifully illustrated work with the plates in fine dark impressions. The artist makes extensive use of borders to illustrate various fine detail of alphabets, instruments, scroll work, decoration, etc., etc 2 volumes in 1. [4], 22; 66 pages. With 56 plates engraved by Heinrich Hugo Cöntgen after Merken showing writing specimens within baroque historiated borders, Hebrew and Greek alphabets, chemical symbols, astronomical diagrams, architectural orders, etc. Small marginal dampstain in blank margin of last text leaf. La collation de ces trois editions est identique, celle consideree comme la premiere comporte le "s" allonge de l'ancienne typographie, et quelques fautes, corrigees pour cette edition qui a des "s" du style moderne. Caillet (9784) cite une note de Stanislas de Guaita : ' Ouvrage assez peu commun du theosophe Claude de Saint-Martin. C'est son deuxieme en date ; j'en connais trois editions differentes publiees toutes trois sous l'indication trompeuse d'Edimbourg (Lyon), et le millesime 1782 E. La collation de ces trois editions est rigoureusement identique ; la premiere edition comporte l'ancien caractere typographique de l's allongee f et quelques fautes, corrigees pour cette edition ou l'on retrouve des s du style moderne. Cet ouvrage divise en 22 chapitres qui correspondent aux 22 arcanes est certainement le chef-d'iuvre du Philosophe inconnu dont il contient toute la doctrine. Base tout entier sur les 22 clefs du tarot et sur la grande loi de l'analogie, il a surtout pour but ' d'expliquer les choses par l'homme autrement dit d'etudier l'Univers ou Macrocosme par le microcosme E. - [with] [Lyre Bird?]. Two watercolours. 450 by 315mm & 430 by 300mm. Both images foxed & washed. The Waxbill signed & dated, 1782. Loxia astrild is also known as the orange cheeked waxbill and is found both in Africa and America. The other unidentified image is a variety of lyre bird. One of the foremost naturalist painters of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Sarah Stone was hired by Sir Ashton Lever to record his extensive collections between 1781 and 1785. In addition to his aviary of 4000 birds, Sir Ashton's collections included many of the specimens collected on Cook's Third Voyage, and her drawings are often the only surviving record of these items. When the Leverian Museum was dispersed by lottery in 1784 the drawings by Miss Stone were exempted from the sale. Sarah Stone also provided the illustrations for John White's Journal to New South Wales,the first work to illustrate natural history from the colony, and Latham's Synopsis of Birds. She exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1780, and at the Royal Academy in 1781 when she showed three watercolours of birds and one of shells.
