Notas manuscritas al margen derecho de la pág. 115 Cesada la Diputacion de Alcabalas, de cuya superintendencia se cuidaban sus Diputados, y habiendo quedado inútiles muchos Ministros, que consumian ociosamente gran cantidad de salarios, el rey decidió en 1694 pasar este caudal a la Hacienda Real, y reformar enteramente la menciondada Diputación, lo cual hizo saber en 1712. El texto contiene el detalle de las reglas que los Comisarios de Millones deben observar, las instrucciones que el reino da a sus Contadores y Secretarios, al Tesorero general, y al Agente General del reino. Sigue una Adicion con un acuerdo de 1774, que contiene distintos documentos no incluidos en la Instrucción, como el reglamento para los sueldos de los diputados, el permiso para asistir como representantes a distintos acontecimientos, etc. (Palau 120347). Pour nous cela brosse un veritable tableau de la societe de ce temps - Nous avons ici de beaux exemples de Romances, d'Idylles et d'Impromptus - A noter aussi une chanson bacchique sur le Champagne, un etonnant recit de Reve ("Les Champs Elysees") et une lettre d'amour qui nous est parvenu par hasard grace a une erreur du copiste ainsi que nous l'apprend une note manuscrite de l'auteur "qui ne voulant pas faire recommencer un cahier" l'a laissee - - [En tant que bien culturel de categorie 8, (decret no 93-124 du 29 janvier 1993), cet article ne peut etre vendu sans formalite que dans la Communaute Europeenne ]-

The present edition of the NORTH-AMERICAN CALENDAR... is most notable for its inclusion of the complete Articles of Confederation, which had passed into law upon Maryland's agreement to ratify on March 1, 1781. Published by Benjamin West, noted astronomer, and founder of what was to become the NEW ENGLAND ALMANAC, produced on Providence's first printing press in 1762. Though most remembered for his astronomical skills and numerous almanacs, West also worked fervently to supply the Continental army with clothes, and later served on the faculty of Rhode Island College, later Brown University. Nice copy of Guarini's famous work with decorative head and tail pieces. re is some minor wear to the extremities including some fading to the spine and edges of the boards and some pin prick worm holes to the edges of the boards, by the spine, and the spine itself. Internally the book is generally clean and bright apart from some occasional spots and the odd handling mark. The worm holes continue on the pages to the front and rear of the book, continuing for aprox 40 pages each end. . Full-Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7!" - 9!" tall.

Paris, veuve Duchesne 1782-1783. 7 volumes. 12mo. With engraved oval portrait of the author in volume 1 and another portrait in volume 6. Contemp. calf, backs richly gilt with double labels, triple line gilt borders on all sides, marbled endpapers, marbled edges. Faint water stain in upper margin of 3 volumes, minor wear to extremities. A fine set. First and only collective edition. The abbe Gabriel Francois Coyer was born in the Franche-Comte from a poor family and educated by the Jesuits. The short biographical sketch of the author included in the first volume records that he left the order in 1736 'because of his love for freedom and peace', which resulted in a conflict with his superiors. He became secretary to the prince de Turenne and chaplain general to the cavalry, which brought him to the battle of Lawfelt (Lauffeld) and the siege of Bergen-op-Zoom in 1747. He held various other official positions and made travels to Italy and England, where he became a member of the Royal Society. His biographer characterizes him as 'an enemy by nature of fanatism, intolerance and superstition'. Most of his works are of economic interest and well represented in the economic collections of Kress, Goldsmiths', Einaudi (1381-1390) and INED (1224-1233). *This collective edition not in Kress, Goldsmiths', Einaudi or INED. Primera edición de una de las cumbres del pensamiento jurídico-social español del Siglo XVIII, obra del último vástago de una gran familia vasca enraizada en México, uno cuyos miembros fue su tio Don Antonio de Lardizábal y Elorza, Obispo de Puebla. Manuel de Lardizábal junto con su hermano mayor Miguel pasaron a España en 1761. Estudiaron ambos Derechos en Valladolid e hicieron una gran carrera. En 1775, a los treinta y seis años, Manuel de Lardizábal ingresa en la Real Academia Española, ocupando en la misma el cargo de Secretario Perpetuo hasta 1794, en que los dos hermanos son desterrados por Godoy. Sus cargos oficiales van de Fiscal del Supremo Consejo de Castilla y de la Sala de Alcaldes de Corte, a Alcalde del Crimen y de Hijosdalgo de la Real Chancilleria de Granada, y como tal fue uno de los encargados por Carlos III en 1770 de estudiar la Reforma de las Leyes Penales. La presente obra recoge su trabajo de investigación preliminar, que ha pasado a la historia. La Reforma tardaría aún medio siglo en realizarse. El largo contacto de Lardizábal con la vida peninsular hacen de él, intelectualmente, un árbol trasplantado que, después de su primera florescencia, nutrido con otras savias, da los más jugosos y sazonados frutos. Colburn by delaying the publication has taken away sadly from the value of the Review, & people have already forgotten it. Is it too much to ask you to insert a paragraph somewhere, stating your satisfaction . . . that this Book has at last appeared. . . . Iccu: IT\ICCU\UBOE\007991.La Scienza della Legislazione pubblicata dal 1780 in sette volumi e' ispirata al principio secondo il quale una buona legislazione deve avere per fondamento la Ragione e deve corrispondere alla realta' socio-economica in cui nasce. Peraltro, nella "Scienza", Filangieri affermava l'esigenza di una codificazione delle leggi e di una riforma progressiva dalla procedura penale, individuando i mali storici del Regno di Napoli negli abusi feudali, nella ripartizione non equa delle proprieta' terriere, nell'eccessiva ricchezza del clero e nella tristi condizioni di vita delle classi meno abbienti. Infine, riconosceva come obiettivi precipui da raggiungere ai fini di un rimodellamento in senso illuministico dello Stato Borbonico: il rafforzamento dei poteri del sovrano illuminato, la creazione di un vasto ceto di piccoli proprietari terrieri, l'uguaglianza civile, la liberta' commerciale, un'imposta unica sul prodotto netto e l'affermazione del principio dell'educazione pubblica per tutti i cittadini del regno. La sua opera fu tradotta in inglese, in francese, in tedesco, in spagnolo e rappresento' una delle fonti ispiratrici del pensiero e dell'opera del ceto liberale e progressista meridionale. L'opera fu messa all'Indice nel 1784, ma Franklin gli chiese piu' volte consiglio per la Costituzione americana, Goethe lo ammiro' e da lui apprese il pensiero di Giambattista Vico. Nel preambolo delle riflessioni politiche del 1774, Filangieri dice: Io mi consacro interamente allo Stato', cio' a testimoniare che gia' a ventun anni ha la forte consapevolezza di avere una missione da compiere a cui non sottrae neanche un giorno della propria esistenza. Egli e' invece piu' indulgente con il prossimo: Ognuno deve lavorare poche ore in modo da non abbruttirsi e supplire ai suoi bisogni e a quelli della sua famiglia, un lavoro assiduo, una vita conservata a stento non e' mai una vita felice. Questa era la misera condizione dellinfelice, niun istante era per lui perche' li doveva tutti al lavoro. Lo Stato bisogna che sia ricco e che le ricchezze vi siano ben distribuite'. Ferdinando Galiani e Antonio Genovesi, gli altri due grandi esponenti della triade dellIlluminismo napoletano, avevano a loro volta sviluppato la scienza delleconomia. Genovesi aveva ricoperto la prima cattedra di commercio e meccanica (oggi si direbbe deconomia politica) in Europa. Dalla sua opera Filangieri ricava lattenzione al fatto che lo Stato per poter creare prosperita' deve essere esso stesso prospero. Ne' la vendetta delloffesa arrecata alla societa' ne' lespiazione del reato sono gli oggetti delle pene. La vendetta e' una passione e le leggi ne sono esenti. E la giustizia non e' una di quelle terribili divinita' alle quali i loro crudeli adoratori immolano le umane vittime per placare il loro preteso furore. Le leggi allorche' puniscono, hanno innanzi agli occhi la societa' e non il delinquente; esse sono mosse dallinteresse pubblico e non dallodio privato, esse cercano un esempio per lavvenire e non una vendetta per il passato [la pena deve avere un potere fortemente dissuasivo nei confronti di futuri reati]. La vendetta, qualunque essa fosse, sarebbe assurda e inutile: assurda perche' le leggi moderatrici delle particolari passioni giustificherebbero in questo caso col loro esempio quello che condannarono coi loro precetti; inutile perche' non potrebbe impedire che il torto arrecato alla societa' dal delitto del reo non esistesse realmente. Le grida di un infelice richiamano forse dal tempo che non ritorna le azioni gia' consumate? Loggetto dunque delle leggi nel punire i delitti altro non puo' essere se non quello di impedire che il delinquente arrechi altri danni alla soc

Ph.-D. Pierres, Paris 1782 - 362 pps with index. A very rare first volume of a three volume set (in French) which gives a history of French gastronomy. Good to very good for age. Rear endpaper fused to rear board. Exquisite binding and paper. Boards do show the shelfwear of two centuries but the spine and titles are quite prominent and in good shape. Rubbing to boards as one might expect. Interior well bound, pages have some age blemishing, rear 20 pages or so have some kind of possible liquid staining from long ago - faintly marked. Seems to be stained in red on the edges. Due to the age and rarity of this book, I will include as many photos as requested to ensure that the buyer is sure of authenticity. Buon esemplare con barbe, una lievissima gora d'umido colpisce la parte inferiore di alcune pp. Scritte verso il 1680 suscitarono l'entusiasmo dei contemporanei tanto che ancora manoscritte si diffusero riscuotendo l'elogio del Redi, Muratori, Bellini, Crescimbeni, furono pubblicate postume nel 1718. Scritte "bagnando nel fiele il labbro secco" hanno più l'aspetto di un libello diffamatorio che di una vera e propria satira dei costumi della società granducale fiorentina avviata alla decadenza.
