Pieces de titres en maroquin beige et piece de tomaison dans un medaillon. Tranches rouges. Bel ensemble decoratif. §L'ouvrage constitue la plus importante histoire sur la Russie de l'epoque, l'auteur a non seulement puise dans les ouvrages russes qu'il cite en debut d'ouvrage, mais il amasse une somme considerable d'information durant son sejour de 7 ans a St. Petersbourg comme enseignant (c'est sous la protection de Diderot qu'il put avoir ce poste). L'oeuvre fut donnee en souscription et recut l'aval de nombreux nobles russes. Les deux cartes depliantes representent l'Europe de L'ouest et la Russie jusqu'aux iles Aleoutiennes. A curious translation of an original not to be found. It seems a condenced work, which was translated from the Vegetables System in 26 vols.! Rare not in Nissen BBI nor Pritzel, nor Stafleu and Cowan. The book gives guidelines for the classification of plants based on phenomenology, employing the specific distribution and shape of leaves, blossoms, reproductory parts etc. Published posthumous as John Hill died in 1775. Ex libris of Karen and Eigil Kiaer pasted in on front. The first plates have handwritten notes in the margins in an old hand.

"Seconde edition, la meme annee que l'originale. Mme de Genlis mettra en pratique son systeme d'education avec les enfants du duc d'Orleans qui venaient de lui etre confies. Adele et Theodore, qui fit la reputation de son auteur, marque le debut d'une querelle avec les encyclopedistes. Selon Mme de Genlis, Rousseau avait tort de croire l'homme naturellement bon. La societe, loin de le corrompre, pouvait au contraire parfaire l'individu, par l'education. Elle s'affirmait disciple de Fenelon. Les 7 dernieres pages renferment le ""Cours de lecture suivi par Adele, depuis l'age de six ans jusqu'a vingt-deux"", catalogue commente des lectures d'une jeune fille. Charmants culs-de-lampe graves sur bois, differents a chaque chapitre. (Gumuchian, 2696). - Quelques cahiers legerement jaunis. Coins legerement choques. Leger accident a une coiffe (t. 2), sans manque de cuir."

MS written in black-brown ink throughout and ruled in red, [N.p.]: 1782 Gurney's famous work on short-hand of the same title was first published in 1750 and went through numerous, illustrated editions. The present meticulouslessly written manuscript comprises an address to the reader, the alphabet and related symbolds, shorthand for parts of speech and syllable formations, shortenting rules, persons and moods, negatives, specimen versions of passage from scripture, other remarks, and punctuation. Gurney's name is synonmous with 18th-century short-hand studies. For examples of trials of which he took short-hand notes see item .....

Venetiis (Venise), apud Gasparem Storti, 1782, gr. in-8 , au total LII + 6141 p., reliure en demi-parchemin originale a coins, papier italien imprime a motifs geometriques repetes en gris fonce sur fond jaunatre, piece de tomaison ms. en encre brun sur le dos, tranches jaspees rouges, bel exemplaire en tres bon etat. Famosissima opera canonistica in stravagante rilegatura italiana settecentesca! Quoiqu'on ignore les dates exactes de la vie du franciscain italien Lucio Ferraris, on sait par contre qu'il revetait plusieurs fonctions a la cour pontificale, notamment celle de consulteur du Saint Office. Sa OPrompta Bibliotheca' fut imprimee pour la premiere fois en 1746 a Bologne et a connu moult reeditions jusqu'au milieu du XIXe siecle grace a la richesse de sujets traites. Ferraris excelle par une vaste erudition qui lui permet de tenir compte de 700 auteurs. Non moins considerable se presente l'abondante citation d'innombrables constitutions pontificales, des sentences de la Rote Romaine ainsi que des decisions de differentes Congregations de la Curie romaine. Par ses informations pertinentes et son organisation alphabetique, cet ouvrage remplace pour ainsi dire toute une bibliotheque canonistique. C'est d'ailleurs la raison pour laquelle Ferraris fut largement copie sans pour autant le nommer. Comme dit un des meilleurs connaisseurs des auteurs de droit canon, Johann Friedrich von Schulte, cet ouvrage "hat bei der Kurie ein grosses Ansehen erlangt und ist fur viele spatere eine wahre Fundgrunde geworden; es ware leicht nachzuweisen, dass sich massenhafte Excerpte bzw. wortliche Stellen in verschiedenen Werken vorfinden". Fregio ad arabesco al titolo. 2 tavv. incise su rame ripiegate illustrano diversi tipi di tortura inflitti dagli Inquisitori e le "Vestiture diverse de'Rei condannati dall'Inquisizione". Alcuni aloni d'umido marginali, qualche fioritura lieve. Edizione originale, rara e impressa in forma anonima per ragioni prudenziali, della prima storia dell'Inquisizione composta in Italia, già attribuita all'abate e poligrafo Modesto Rastrelli (Firenze, 1752-ivi, 1814), e ora restituita dalle moderne ricerche alla penna di Francesco Becattini (Firenze, 1743-ivi, 1813), inesauribile poligrafo di stampo illuminista. Il volume, improntato a una vibrante condanna dei metodi inquisitori (che valse all'opera la messa alll'Indice nel 1817), narra delle origini dell'Inquisizione e del suo diffondersi in Francia, in Spagna, in Portogallo, in Italia, a Malta, ecc., degli auto da fé, dei sistemi di tortura, passando poi a discorrere particolarmente dell'Inquisizione a Firenze e in Toscana e dei processi toccati ad Aonio Paleario e a Galileo, ai Socini e a Carnesecchi, alle streghe senesi e a Pandolfo Ricasoli. Di singolare interesse anche la relazione finale "Della carcerazione del Dottor Tommaso Crudeli di Poppi, e della processura formata contro di lui dal Tribunale del S. Ufizio di Firenze l'anno 1739", pubblicata soltanto per le cure del Becattini, ma stesa dallo stesso Crudeli insieme con Luca Antonio Corsi. La documentazione è attinta in prevalenza all'"Histoire des Inquisitions" del Goujet, integrata col ricorso ad autori come Limborch, Marsollier, Sarpi, Dellon, Lami. A ristabilire la corretta paternità del volume scalzando l'attribuzione al Rastrelli è stata in anni recenti Maria Augusta Morelli Timpanaro nel suo volume "Autori, stampatori, librai: per una storia dell'editoria in Firenze nel secolo XVIII", Firenze, Olschki, 1999; la Timpanaro ha riprodotto un brano della "Gazzetta Universale" di Firenze del 10 settembre 1782 in cui si legge: "È stata pubblicata dall'autore medesimo della Vita di Maria Teresa, e dell'Istoria Austriaca un'esatta Istoria dell'Inquisizione". Nella prefazione alla terza edizione dell'opera, uscita a Milano nel 1797, l'autore spiegò così l'assunto del suo lavoro: "Abolita per sempre dall'Imperatore Giuseppe II nel 1775 l'Inquisizione o S. Uffizio in Milano, e successivamente da Ferdinando IV di Borbone nell'Isola di Sicilia e dall'Arciduca poi Imperatore Leopoldo II Granduca di Toscana nel 1782 in Firenze, mi venne in mente di tessere il primo fra tutti gli Italiani una breve Istoria di quel terribile tribunale; non per denigrare la religione de'nostri padri, ma a solo oggetto di far vedere quanto di essa si era abusato". Shortly after publication of this first English edition of The Constitutions, the Monthly Review noted: "It contains a greater portion of unsophisticated wisdom and good sense, than is, perhaps, to be met with in any other legislative code that was ever yet framed. Included are illustrations of a perpetual wall calendar with details of all the moving parts; the use of optical instruments for making silouettes; monograms templates; emblems; alchemical formulas; geometrical and astronomical figures; depicting emotion; making optical plates. Sancti Prosperi Aquitani S. Augustini Discipuli, S. Opera in due corposi tomi in veste editoriale: I tomo pp. XL, 551, II tomo pp. VIII, 350. L'opara in legatura povera editoriale presenta qualche alone alle prime ed ultime pagine dei volumi, per il resto l'opera e' perfetta e freschissima, stampa su due colonne con note a stampa sul margine e sul fondo pagine. Prospero ( Aquitania, 390 circa - 463 circa) fu difensore delle opere di Agostino d'Ippona sulla grazia e sulla predestinazione, la Chiesa cattolica lo venera come santo e "maestro di fede".Dall'analisi dei suoi scritti si puo' dedurre che percorse l'intero corso di studi classici previsto per la sua epoca.Ad un certo punto della sua vita, intorno al 426, dall'Aquitania si stabili' a Marsiglia, dove visse per molto tempo in convento, come monaco laico, senza mai ricevere gli ordini. In questo periodo conobbe Agostino ed imparo' ad apprezzarne le idee. Fu un autore molto prolifico, scrisse commenti, sentenze, epigrammi, versi dottrinali.. Il suo pensiero resto' comunque imperniato su due argomenti di provenienza agostiniana: l'universalita' della volonta' salvifica di Dio e la predestinazione, secondo cui Dio concede a tutti gli uomini la grazia sufficiente per salvarsi; nega nel modo piu' assoluto la predestinazione al peccato e alla perdizione, Dio non ha colpa della dannazione; coloro che si perdono, lo fanno di loro volonta'. 1782 Le comte de Kersaint (Le Havre 1742 - guillotiné à Paris le 4 décembre 1793), commandant une petite division de 5 bâtiments menés par l'Iphigénie, attaqua et fit capituler les établissements britanniques des rivières Essequibo et Berbiche pendant une rapide campagne au début de 1782, et devint gouverneur de Demarara, Essequibo et Berbiche, aujourd'hui en Guyana, ancienne Guyane anglaise et Guyane hollandaise. Les documents sur cette campagne sont rares. 1) 2 feuillets in-4, le second blanc. 15 lignes manuscrites. Daté "à bord de l'Iphigénie, le 21 fevrier 1782." Signé Comte de Kersaint. Kersaint ordonne à Polony de se rendre "dans la rivière Berbiche" pour y remettre "aux ordres de M. de Susanet les objets destinés pour cette colonie ... d'où il repartira sur le champ pour Surinam pour y porter un paquet à Monsieur Texier gouverneur de cette colonie. Après avoir reçu la réponse il se hâtera de me rejoindre évitant sur sa route toute rencontre..." 2) 2 feuillets in-folio, le second blanc. 14 lignes manuscrites . Ordre donné au lieutenant de frégate auxiliaire Polony de quitter l'Iphigénie pour prendre le commandement de la Sophie, avec 16 hommes d'équipage. Daté "à bord de l'Iphigénie, en la rivière de Démérary le 21 février 1782". Signé Comte de Kersaint. 3) 4 pages in-8, dont 2 blanches. 23 lignes de la main du chevalier de Kersaint. Daté de Rochefort 25 mars 1784. Signé Chevalier de Kersaint (frère de Guy-Armand Simon). Le Chevalier de Kersaint certifie que Polony a mérité d'être chargé par son frère du commandement "des goelettes sur la côte de Demerary", et qu'il a lui même "dans deux circonstances pour la navigation de Demerary à Surinam et pour le Vieux Canal en allant à La Havane" utilisé les journaux de bord de Polony, et qu'il a "trouvé que cet officier avait de l'intelligence et des connaissances". Le comte de Kersaint est le père de l'auteur d'Ourika, Mme de Duras.

Un portrait frontispice gravé par Dien d'après Boilly (relié dans le tome II, seconde partie), 3 titres gravés, 2 cartes dépliantes, et 285 gravures sur 166 planches hors texte, dont de nombreuses cartes, vues et costumes, plusieurs sur double page, un tableau à double page. Toutes ces planches sont gravées sur cuivre, à l'eau-forte ou au burin, la plupart d'après des dessins de l'auteur et de Hilaire, mais également d'un certain nombre d'autres dessinateurs dont Moreau le Jeune pour les planches de costumes. Un très grand nombre de graveurs ont par ailleurs pris part à cet ouvrage, parmi lesquels Choffard, Tardieu, Delignon, Coiny, Lingé, Poulleau, etc. Edition originale, premier volume en troisième tirage, que l'on reconnaît au Discours préliminaire, et notamment à la fin de ce dernier (s'achevant ici sur les mots O utinam., et non exoriare aliquis. comme dans les deux tirages précédents). Bel exemplaire de cet ouvrage remarquable qui offre de très nombreuses vues et cartes de Grèce, dont 9 à double page et une dépliante, des planches de costumes ou de monnaie et un tableau généalogique hors texte à double page. Excellent tirage, sans rousseurs.

In 4, [mm. 223 x 167], pp. X 252, con ritratto del Vitelli entro cornice, raffigurato mentre stringe a se' il Crocefisso inciso in rame da Antonio Fiori. Frontespizio entro cornice decorato dalla figura di un puttino che stringe una colomba, motivo usato anche per uno dei finalini figurati, alcuni di grandi dimensioni, altri con semplici cornici, realizzati in xilografia. Capilettera entro cornici. In cartone marmorizzato con nervi in cuoio passanti. Leggere abrasioni. Esemplare con legatura molto allentata, qualche quinterno sciolto. Alcune delle pagine con vecchi rinforzi e macchie, segni di inchiostro che testimoniano, oltre a quelle normali della carta l'uso del libro. Piccola asportazione all'angolo superiore delle p. 207-208. Al risguardo anteriore nota di possesso parzialmente depennata: Del Sig.re Benedetto Periniotti. Opera di grande interesse locale basata, come scrive nella prefazione sulle memorie di Francesco Cirocchi, che aveva conosciuto direttamente il Vitelli e ne aveva composto una vita, edita sempre a Foligno, appena quattro anni dopo la morte avvenuta nel 1625. E' dedicata al Cardinale Andrea Corsini dal rettore e dai confratri della Compagnia del Buon Gesu'. Giovanni Battista Vitelli era nato a Foligno nel 1538, dopo essere stato iscritto all'arte della seta, intorno ai venti anni ebbe la chiamata spirituale in breve tempo raduno' una serie di compagni e nel 1561 fondo' la Compagnia del Buon Gesu'. Recatosi a Roma da San Filippo Neri nel 1575 che ne riconosce la santita', vi torno' ancora per il Giubileo successivo del 1600 ed in quell'occasione il cardinale Cesare Baronio lo condusse a Papa Clemente VIII e dopo n terzo viaggio nel 1605 fu in Toscana. Aiuto' i Barnabiti ad installarsi in Foligno e quando nel 1613 il Vescovo di Foligno volle fare una ricognizione delle reliquie di Santa Messalina, volle che fosse lui ad estrarle dall'urna. Alla fine dei ricordi biografici sono ricordate le sue virtu' e quindi le cose mirabili che realizzo'. Importante per conoscere la vita folignate fra XVI e XVII secolo. Le uniche cinque copie registrate dall'ICCU sono presso la Biblioteca Ludovico Jacobilli del Seminario vescovile di Foligno. Il Prosperi, morto nel 1799, fu autore anche di panegirici ed orazioni sacre e di Due ragionamenti sopra la citta' di Fuligno edito nel 1781. La tipografia fondata da Niccolo' Campitelli nel 1694 continuo' la sua attivita' incessantemente fino al 1935, per opera dei suoi successori.

(ex-libris 19e Fr. C. E. Fd. de Nostitz) Edition originale rare de cet ouvrage majeur sur les Templiers et les origines de la maçonnerie. C'est Nicolaï le premier qui a mis en circulation le mot de "Bafomet" et parlé d'une doctrine secrète des Templiers. Il fait aussi remonter la Franc-maçonnerie moderne à une société de Rose-Croix créée en Angleterre vers 1630 par R. Fludd, laquelle sous l'influence des événements politiques, se serait transformée peu à peu. L'ouvrage contient de nombreux renseignements sur Ashmole, Andrae et surtout Wilkins (beau frère de Cromwell). Une seconde édition augmentée en 2 volumes a paru la même année. Certaines bibliographies confondent allègrement les deux tirages. Seule cette 1ère édition en 1 volume a été traduite en français. Il est ne a Sainte-Croix sur Orne en 1744 et mort a Augsbourg en 1809.
