Dessau, Société typographique, 1782. 4to, pp. [iv], 172, with one folding printed table bound after p. 98; paper lightly but evenly browned, due to paper quality; contemporary calf-backed paste-paper boards, spine in compartments with floral designs, gilt-lettered spine label; a very good copy. First edition, very rare, of a curious work by the Moravian savant Lamberg, covering music, alchemy, astrology, mathematics, women, the theatre, and current affairs. Partly designed as a commonplace book, with Lamberg's aperçus on a wide variety of subjects, partly fictitious dialogues between Lamberg (under the pseudonym Sergis) and Sir Earl, apparently count Saint-Germain, the celebrated adventurer and mystery figure who enthralled all of Europe with his linguistic, musical, alchemistical and conversational powers and his discovery of the secret of ever-lasting life, discussing a wide variety of subjects organised in a curious sequence of journées and stations, some of them with quasi stage directions. Amongst Lamberg's observations there is a brief consideration of grammar, where he tries to deconstruct grammar in a similar manner to Diderot's deconstruction of the senses in his work Lettres sur les Sourds et Muets. Chapters on ciphers and secret language are followed by those on superstition, magic, libraries, women, collections etc. The last section is entitled Question sur une nouvelle manière de comter, ou Bustroph numéral, dedié aux arithmeticiens modernes, containing an application of the poetic device of a 'bustroph' to mathematical calculations. Count Lamberg (1729-1792), educated at the universities of Breslau, Berlin, and Halle, was destined for the diplomatic service. Because of the intrigues of a courtesan, he became discredited and retreated to Augsburg. Here he devoted himself to scientific research. He corresponded with Hume, Voltaire, Algarotti, d'Alembert and Casanova and published on scientific subjects. He formed one of the most notable 'cabinets de physique' in Germany. He was admitted to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in 1773. Eine von mehreren zeitgleich in verschiedenen Kollationen erschienenen Ausgaben dieser Apologie der Mendikantenorden in Zeiten der Ordensaufhebung. - Druckort und -verlag nach Kayser (der allerdings nicht auf eine abweichende Angabe im Impressum hinweist). Holzmann/Bohatta nennen als mögliche Verfasser C. H. Korn (nach Weller) und J. F. Gaum (nach eigenen "handschriftlichen privaten Mitteilungen"), geben aber - wohl Kaysers oder Wellers Angaben falsch lesend - als Druckort "Stettin und Ulm" an. Zahlreiche Bibliothekskataloge führen das Werk dennoch als im kurländischen Mitau (Jelgawa) gedruckt an. Ein annähernd zeitgenöss. hs. Vermerk am vorderen Broschurdeckel des vorliegenden Exemplars weist ebenfalls Gaum als Verfasser aus. - Papierbedingt durchgehend gebräunt; Einband etwas lädiert. Kayser I, 118 ("Ulm, Stettin"). GHENT BELGIUM HOLLAND, 1782. On offer is a remarkable historical archive of twenty folded folio sheets bearing 23 entries on ten of the pages as presented before the court at Ghent, Belgium between April 1782 - February 1783 and pertaining to Flemish trade in the latter part of the 18th century much of it relating to trade and shipments for the new Republic. The timing of the manuscripts is particularly notable as the documents shed light on-cross Atlantic maritime trade during a very volatile period of Europe and America for two primary reasons: 1) The manuscripts are written during the last phase of the War of American Independence and refer many times throughout: "colonies americaines maintenant en guerre contre le Roi de la grande bretagne" and 2) They are written during the period of the 4th Anglo-Dutch war, which effectively brought Dutch maritime dominance to an end. Three [3] of the entries are written in French, the other 20 are in Dutch. Each is signed De Menck. There are references to ships departing from Oostend and Amsterdam for England, Cuba, Cadiz, Surinam, and Paramaribo destined to carry or carrying such goods as meat, butter, wheat, paint, cotton, ginger, and coffee. Light spotting to first few leaves, very minor marginal worming to first and last few leaves, otherwise crisp and clean. Uncut and partly unopened. Overall a fine copy. FIRST & ONLY EDITION, rare, of Correia's only published poetical work. Written in 10 cantos, this ambitious epic poem is a Christian allegory in the style of Voltaire's @Henriade. The @Joanneida chronicles Portuguese history from the earliest times to the acclamation of D. João I in 1385, concluding with the Portuguese victory over Castilian forces at Aljubarrota which secured the Portuguese throne for D. João and ushered in a new royal dynasty. Correia was born in Coimbra, educated at its university and, after attempting a military career, retired to his @quinta outside Coimbra. He published several short works in his capacity as a member of the Academia Liturgica de Coimbra, and was a Correspondent of the Academia Real das Sciencias, Lisbon, until his expulsion for unknown reasons in 1798. Halle, Dost, 1782-1783. - Erste Ausgabe der sehr seltenen Zeitschrift des radikalen Aufklärers und rationalistischen Theologen, die in der Reihe der Versuche Bahrdts steht, die biblischen Überlieferungen, besonders die Wundertätigkeit Jesu, rationalistisch zu deuten und darzustellen. "Dabei bringt er Schlüsselbegriffe der Aufklärung (Aufklärung, Licht, Vorurteil, Toleranz, Aberglauben) geschickt in Zusammenhang mit der biblischen Lehre und wendet diese sogar auf die Volkstäuschungs-Preisaufgabe der Berliner Akademie für 1780 an!" (Böning/Siegert). Fortsetzung dieser Bemühungen waren dann "Ausführung des Plans und Zweks Jesu" (Berlin 1784-93). Während seiner "glänzenden Zeit" als Professor an der Universität Halle "war sein religiöses Leben in stetigem Niedergang begriffen. Was er bisher noch vom Offenbarungsglauben festgehalten, vertauschte er in Halle mit einer Art Naturreligion. Christus selbst sei der größte Naturalist gewesen, habe aber seinen Plan, alle positive Religion zu verdrängen, aus Klugheitsrücksichten nicht ausgeführt, sondern seine Weisheit nur einer von ihm gestifteten Ordensgesellschaft mitgeteilt" (RGG II, 359). – Vordere Vorsätze und hinterer Innenspiegel mit altem Besitzerstempel. Cette paternite est parfois contestee, l'ouvrage renfermant trop de citations pour avoir ete compose en prison. Edition originale des memoires de Linguet, journaliste et avocat embastille deux ans par Maurepas, bientot membre du club des Cordeliers sous la Revolution. [Frontispice representant Louis XVI sur les ruines de la Bastille s' exprimant au peuple et lui disant : "Soyez libres : vivez " ; arrestation par le comite de Salut Public et a son execution en 1794]. Belle reunion des deux celebres requisitoires contre la prison d'Etat.

Printed for Mess. Rivington (etc.) London 1782 2d Edition "A new edition: carefully corrected; greatly enlarged; and continued from 1764 to 1782. Two volumes, octavo, 496 and 442 pages respectively. An incomparable guide to English and Irish theatre, giving publication and performance details and critical comments, as well as biographical and anecdotal information about playwrights and actors. Vol. 1 covers persons, A-Z, while vol. 2 lists titles, A-Z; both volumes double-columned. In full calf, gilt rules, purple leather spine labels, marbled endpapers. The pages are quite fresh, but have been annotated (plays checked off, dates corrected etc) in a number of places by later hands. The bindings show signs of wear, but are tight and whole. Owner's signature on title pages. Thus, very good.

Second edition, revised and expanded by Isaac Reed, 8vo, 2 volumes; text in two columns; contemporary tree calf, rebacked, with new brown morocco labels lettered in gilt on spines, light wear to extremities, corners, some edges repaired, and fairly recent bookplates of Jerome Landfield mounted inside front cover of each volume, still a nice set. First compiled by Baker (1730-1767) and published in 1764 as the Companion to the Playhouse. The enlarged second edition was considered in its day the best and most complete edition, and it remains the best contemporary source on the English theater. In addition to listing alphabetically all English actors, actresses, and playwrights, and all English plays ever performed, Reed adds the name of the stage of each performance of every day. Reed's edition was well received. Boswell thought his extensive and accurate knowledge of English literature "wonderful" (DNB).

Contemp. gilt calf, slightly defective. Printed on heavy bluish paper. First edition. The major contemporary documentation on the life and work of the great minister by one of his best friends. The first part treats the youth of Turgot, his successful administration as intendant for the generality of Limoges where he earned great popularity by his abolishment of the corvees and the introduction of a great deal of other reforms, and his administration as secretary of state for the navy, a position he held for five weeks only but of particular interest for his enlightened views on colonial policy. The second and larger part treats Turgot's administration as controller-general and minister of finance from August 1774 until May 1776. It contains a striking account of the numerous reforms introduced by him: the abolishment of abuses, privileges and crushing taxes, the purification of the financial administration, the abolishment of many limitations on trade and labour, etc. *Kress B.459. Paris, Panckoucke, Liège, Plomteux, 1782-1791. 13 volumes in-4. Veau marbré, dos à nerfs orné. (Reliure de l'époque.) Première édition. Rare série complète des "Arts et métiers mécaniques" : 8 volumes de texte et 5 de planches contenant 1294 planches. (La collation est conforme aux tables des planches avec 8 planches supplémentaires pour la verrerie non mentionnées dans les tables). Ces gravures reprennent pour la plupart celles de l'Encyclopèdie Diderot-D'Alembert, dans un format plus réduit. Le texte comporte environ 500 articles détaillés. Les articles, par exemple l'Art du parfumeur, font jusqu'à 60 pages et se terminent par une table du vocabulaire du contexte mentionné. Il y a près de 70 planches pour l'horlogerie. Un sommaire des articles contenus se trouve à la fin de chaque volume. Les planches de la "Marine" sont annoncées dans la table du dernier volume; mais cette série est indépendante des "Arts & Métiers" et ne figure évidemment pas ici. Le compilateur principal de cette somme est Jacques Lacombe (1724-1811). On sait que l' "Encyclopédie méthodique" de Panckoucke était une refonte générale par ordre de matières de la première encyclopédie. Sa publication s'étala sur 50 ans et ruina son éditeur. Il y a de légères différences de décor entre les volumes de texte, qui sont en très bon état. La reliure des atlas de planches est différente (demi-veau, dos orné) et les charnières sont partiellement fendues, il y a quelques mouillures marginales. Assez bon exemplaire de cette rare série dont on ne trouve le plus souvent que quelques volumes. More details and pictures on request

Printed By John Mycall, for William Green, of Boston, 1782. Good Octavo, 349, [19]. Same specifications as copy listed in Harvard catalog (on microfilm). Printing error on page 177, which is misnumbered as 777, as in the Harvard catalog description. Final three unnumbered pages of the book are advertisements for other books of John Mycall. The leather very scuffed and small portion of leather at head of spine missing. Seven raised bands on spine but no title on spine. Binding tight but second blank flyleaf is partially detached though holding well enough. No missing pages of text. Ownership name on first free endpaper with date of 1783. Note of another previous owner (20th century) laid in stating that this copy was owned by William Breck 1745-1819, a hardware merchant of Boston and member of a prominent Boston mercantile family. Following name of William Breck written at top of endpaper in antique ink is a note in the same ink "June His book cost 12/ 1783. " Also written in below on same endpaper is name of Wm. Breck Jr. in a different but still very antique ink. The pages of text well aged though still very supple. Some age spotting sporadically. A section of 10 pages with quite heavy age spotting/staining. No sign of any damping. Title page with slight shift of type more quaint than a problem. No author name on title page but this work has been attributed to James Burch 1714-1775. An interesting and scarce printing relic of the Revolutionary War era. Early American imprints, first series no. 17487.
