BROWN ( Thomas )
The Works of Mr. Thomas Brown, serious and comical, in prose and verse. With his Remains, in four volumes compleat. With the life and character of Mr. Brown, and his writings, by James Drake, M.D. and a key to the whole.
Dublin : Printed for John Murphy and Laurence Flin, 1778-79-79-79 - Pages (2), x, xiii-xx, 315 : (4), 331 : (6), 339 : (2), viii, 72, 77 - 340, complete thus in spite of the paginaion errors, 4 vols, large 12mo, contemporary pale brown calf, gilt ruled spines, with red and black labels, gilt : a bright, attractive set. "The Eighth Edition, carefully Corrected," first published in 1707 with some subsequent additions, and often reprinted. Tom Brown was, of course, one of the foremost writers on London low-life of his or any other era, and these works contain all of his most famous pieces. Nothing was beyond his pen : there are such things as a supposed letter from Aphra Behn to "a Virgin Actress," giving her a little advice, with the virgin's answer. Also present are the famous "Amusements Serious and Comical" with their portraits of playhouses, gaming-houses, coffee-houses, the "Walk round London and Westminster" on taverns, bawdy-houses, meeting-houses, and Brown's voluminous and often very witty occasional verses and letters. Brown?s works were much read, and copies in fine original condition are now very rare as, for that matter, is this edition in any form : ESTC locates only six copies : Cambridge, National Library of Ireland, and four in the U.S.A. Bourrit's relation to the glaciers & MONT-BLANC Unknown dutch translation Extremly rare first and only dutch edition of Bourrits ODescription des glacieres, glaciers et amas de glace du Duche de Savoye'. Important as being one of the first records in the Dutch language describing the travel towards Chamonix and the descriptions of several excursions in the Mont-Blanc area. The work includes the voyage of M. De Luc ONa de Ys-bedding van Buet' ' and Bourrits famous OBeschrijving der Vertooningen van den Berg Blanc' (Description du Mont-Blanc). The 3 views represents OChamonix, Montanvert & Bossons all engraved by C. Bogerts in 1777. Bourrit's publications were leading the way for the more scientific investigations towards the glaciers and glaciology as a science, it also was the starting point of alpine tourism. Fine full calf binding, small obstruction (worming ?) to the first cover, very fine copy in all. cf. Perret 656, ne connait pas cette traduction neerlandaise. (dutch translation unknown).

Fabricius, Johann Christian
Philosophia entomologica sistens scientiae fundamenta adiectis definitionibus exemplis, observationibus, adumbrationibus
Hamburgi et Kilonii: Carol. Ernest. Bohnii, 1778. First edition. 8vo. [12], 178 pp. Full contemporary brown calf, with green leather spine label. Endpaper a bit browned, one small stain to title page, slight toning to text, but overall a handsome, pleasant copy in contemporary binding, with the bookseller's ticket of Parisian bookseller Ambroise Lefevre. "Librairie Scientifique Ancienne & Moderne" . Fabricius first major work on the system and theory of entomology, and perhaps his greatest theoretical contribution to the science. "Fabricius was undoubtedly one of the most distinguished entomologists and ranks with Carl de Geer, P.A. Latreille, A.G. Oliver and other prominent specialists of earlier times. In many respects he surpassed them, especially as a theoretical natural scientist ... It was Fabricius' greatest ambition to build a system based on the naturally defined genera, without doubt a definite and new contribution to insect systematics. He considered this more important than a dry description of the various species." - DSB IV pp. 512/513

§Demi chagrin noir milieu XIXe , dos a nerfs. Caissons a froid. Frottis.
