London: Printed for the Author, by W. and A. Strahan..., 1778.. xxiv,156pp. Quarto. Modern cloth and boards, gilt label, untrimmed, the Subscribers List unopened. Faint old stamps of a defunct mercantile library, title neatly remargined at gutter, some marginal discolorations to a few early leaves, else a very good copy. First edition of Shaw's first book-length publication. There are some corrections in a very early hand on two pages, likely made with authority. James Boswell is among the subscribers included in the four leaves of subscribers. Samuel Johnson contributed two paragraphs to the "Proposals" for printing of this work, and encouraged Shaw in his next undertaking, a Gaelic vocabulary: "Sir, if you give the world a vocabulary of that language, while the island of Great Britain stands in the Atlantic ocean your name will be mentioned." Unfortunately, the publication of that work was marred by controversy: due to the Scottish highlanders having refused cooperation unless paid for information, the work was more heavily weighted toward Irish words, and some of Shaw's subscribers therefore labeled it defective. In spite of the detractions noted, an agreeable copy of this book. COURTNEY & SMITH, p.129.

Square 8vo, -(2), 98 pp. -Contemporary patterned gilt marbled papers, quite frayed, partially darkened, lacks upper half of spine; interior fine. -In Latin and French. -A substantial and important work on slavery in the Americas, especially in the French colonies. -It has three major parts: Caput I. : "De Servis Antiquiorum Quarundam Gentium", which describes slavery in the antiquities, i.e., under the Jews, the Lacedaemonians, the Athenians, the Romans, the Germans, and the Galls. -Caput II. : "De Servis Europaerum in America", which deals with Indian, European and Aethiopian (i.e., African) slaves, as well as with the laws governing African slaves. -Finally, the notorious "Code Noir" ("Black Code") of France is given in its entirety (all 60 articles). The Code Noir defined the conditions of slavery in the French colonial empire, and is considered to be "one of the most extensive official documents on race, slavery, and freedom ever drawn up in Europe". -Some examples of the Code, in summary: 1. "Jews are not allowed to reside in the French colonies"-7. "slave markets must not be held on Catholic holidays"-18. "slaves shall not sell sugar cane, even with permission of their masters"-33. "a slave who strikes his or her master...will be executed"-40. "a master who falsely accuses a slave of a crime and has the slave put to death will be fined"-42. Wm. Woollett Engraver to His Majesty del. 1778. Elizabeth Ellis Fecit Published as the Act Directs,29th Septr. 1785. by Wm. Ellis, No. 9. Gwynne's Buildings, Islington. Etching 605 x 480mm. Woollett, William 1735-1785. He was sent to London, where he became a pupil of John Tinney and also studied drawing in the St. Martin's Lane Academy. In 1766 Woollett became a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists, of which he was also secretary for several years. He resided for some time in Green Street, Leicester Square, and later in Charlotte Street, Rathbone Place, where he died, after great suffering, on 23 May 1785, from an injury received some years before in playing at bowls. He was buried in old St. Pancras churchyard, his grave being marked by a plain headstone, which was restored in 1846 and now stands at the south-west angle of the church. A mural tablet to his memory, sculptured by T. Banks, R.A., was erected in the west cloister of Westminster Abbey. Woollett stands in the front rank of the professors of his art, and he was the first English engraver whose works were admired and purchased on the continent. These are uncomon views drawn by Woollett, published by William Ellis [1747-1810]. Ellis had been Woollett's pupil and Elizabeth his wife.

Original boards, new cloth spine, uncut and partly unopened, the covers with the paper mostly worn to the boards, a small worm track in the top of the fore-edge margin of the last few leaves not affecting text, paper with faint browning. *Also contains Duncan's Harveian Oration - De Laudibus Gulielmi Harvei Oratio, Habita in Aedibus Academiae Mediae, prope aulam Collegii Regii Chirurgorum Edinburgensis, Ipsis Calendis Aprilis, 1778, Binis jam elapsis seculis ab ipsius natali. C. Elliot. Edinburgh. 1778. This was issued separately but here is added to the Cases, with continuous pagination and register. The book has added interest from the fact that CHARLES DARWIN [1758-1778], first son of Erasmus Darwin and uncle of Charles Robert Darwin, was assistant to Duncan in the Edinburgh Dispensatory - see page 4 Preface : 'It is but fair to mention, that the histories of the cases, taken at the admission of the patients, were not drawn up by myself. For these I have been indebted to the aid of three gentlemen, Mr. William Browne from Yorkshire, Mr. Samuel Byam Athill from Antigua, and Mr. Charles Darwin from Litchfield, who, while they have been students of medicine at Edinburgh, have, at different periods, officiated as my assistants at the Dispensary.' Some twenty-five case histories are discussed in this book, though it is not revealed who was responsible for taking the admission notes. However, in case XXV, page 335, Duncan gives credit to Darwin as follows: 'Mr. Darwin, who officiated as medical asssistant at the Dispensary at the time when this patient's case was treated, and, who, besides extensive knowledge in every branch of medicine, is also eminently distinguished for his acquaintance with natural history, had the first opportunity of examining this worm after it was discharged. He found it to be one of that kind which Mr. Linnaeus has distinguished by the name of the Taenia lata.' Darwin died from a wound received in the dissecting room in Edinburgh. He was clearly a talented observer in medicine and science and the author of a posthumous work, edited by his father in 1780 - 'Experiments establishing a criterion between mucaginous and purulent matter'. September 1735 in Groningen, wo sein Vater Kaufmann war, geboren, studirte 1751-1758 in Groningen unter LAMBERGEN, VAN DOEVEREN und danach in Leyden unter VAN ROYEN, GADBIUS, F. B. ALBINUS und WINTER. 1759 zog er nach Paris, 1760 nach Amsterdam, um CAMPER zu hören, und promovirte am 14. Juni dieses Jahres mit einer "Dissert. pathologica de morte corporea et causis moriendi" (eine neue Bearbeitung der schon 1758 in Groningen vertheidigten "Disquisitio physiol. de eo, quod vitam constituit in corpore animali"), welche SANDIFORT beide in seinen "Thesaurus dissertationum" aufgenommen hat. - In Groningen praktisch wirksam, wurde er 1771 zum Stadtphysicus und Lehrer der Hebammen und 1772 zum Archiater von Groningen ernannt, als er sowohl die ihm angebotene, durch VAN DOEVEREN'S Uebersiedlung nach Leyden vacirende Professur in Groningen, wie auch eine solche in Harderwyk ausgeschlagen hatte. 1776 jedoch wieder nach Harderwyk berufen und zum Archiater Gelriae ernannt, acceptirte er und trat sein Amt als Prof. medic., chemiae, botanices et art, obstet, im Juni an mit einer "Oratio, qua an expediat rei publicae medicinam facientium, opera expenditur". Nach 15jähriger Wirksamkeit wurde er (1791) nach Utrecht gerufen als Prof. medic. theoret. et practicae (während sein Sohn Steven Jan neben ihm zum Prof. chemiae et botanices ernannt wurde), welches Amt er bis zum Jahre 1815, als er seine Entlassung nahm, wahrgenommen hat. Er starb am 1. December 1817. - Van Genus war ein vortrefflicher Arzt ("unser grösster Practicus nach BOERHAAVE", sagt einer seiner Biographen) und Geburtshelfer, ein ausgezeichneter Docent und sehr grosser Gelehrter. Er schrieb hauptsächlich: "Eenige aanmerkingen over de borstbreuk der ingewanden of Hernia thoracica" (1766) - "Genees-kundige verhandeling over de belette neerzwelging" (1769), gekrönte Preisschrift, eine Abhandlung "De heerschende persloop, die in de laatste garen vooral in 1783 de provincie Gelderland getroffen heeft" (1704), (welche durch die Regierung von Gelderland gratis den Aerzten zugesandt wurde und auch ins Deutsche übersetzt wurde) - "Eenige voorbehoedmiddelen, hoe zich staande de besmetting der persloop, te gedragen, om daartegen op de best mogelyhe wyze beveiligd te worden" - "Brief over eene verbeterde toestel tot dam-pademing (Inhalation) en de nuttigheid daarvan in borst-en keel-ziehten" (1781), worin er die Inhalationsmethode bei Lungenkrankheiten anempfahl - ,, Vergelykende afbeeldingen en beschryving der voornaamste Roonhuysen'sche werktuigen of vroedkunstige hefboomen" (1783) - "Opgave van eenige inlandsche voortbrengselen des velds, welke zouden kunnen dienen ter vervulling van behoefte aan voedsel vooral voor minvermogenden" (1796) - "Oratio de morbi variolosi per operam insitionis exstirpandi studio recte aestimando et prudenter regendo" (1796) - "Aanwyzing aan de landlieden hoe zieh by groote hitte best te gedragen" (1798) - "Over de staatkundige handhaving_ van der ingezetenen gezondheid en leren" (1801) - "Oratio de morbi variolosi pernicie per insitionem, quam dicimus vaccinam longe certius exstirpanda" (1805) - "Overweging van de waardy der koepokken byzonderlyk ter beveiliging voor de kinderpokken" (1807) und "Plantarum indigenarum, in usum sive medicum sive oeconomicum, selectarum index systematicus: cui accedit pro inductionibus institutio aliqua botanica" (1816)." Nachdruckausgabe von Albrecht von Hallers staatspolitischem Roman, in dem er einen jungen Fürsten die Vor- und Nachteile verschiedener Staatsformen kennenlernen und erproben läßt. Daran schließt sich ein Fürstenspiegel an, in dem Usong seine gewonnenen Erziehungsideale formuliert. Der Verlag hatte sich zwar verpflichtet, seine Nachdrucke nur geschlossen in der "Sammlung des besten deutschen Schriftsteller" auszuliefern. IV/1, 24, 4. - Ebd. leicht berieben, leicht fleckig. - Hallers (1708-1777) erstem Staatsroman, in welchem er die orientalische Despotie behandelt. A strong and bright copy on large paper. First edition. A historical treatise on the commerce and trade of the Dutch Republic, the causes of its prosperity in the past, the reasons for its present decline, and the means for recovery. Most bibliographers attribute this book to the French lawyer Accarias de Serionne, an opponent of the ideas of the philosophers and the Physiocrats. It has also been attributed to the Dutch jurist, philosopher and bookseller Elie Luzac (1723-1796), who published a Dutch work (Hollands rijkdom, 1780) which was only nominally a translation from the present French book. In the preface to this Dutch adaptation Luzac writes that he made it because he wanted to demonstrate 'in which way ... such a book should be treated ... even more so, because ... so many had kept him [Luzac] for the author of this [French] book'. Premiere edition in-8 publiee l'annee de l'originale in-4. Selon Querard (I, 5), cet ouvrage est attribue a Accarias de Serionne en societe avec Elie Luzac. Il traite de considerations economiques et historiques sur les ressources hollandaises. C'est en examinant successivement les sources et les modifications dues aux siecles, des causes physiques, morales (a savoir : politiques, fiscales et juridiques), et exterieures (progres de l'agriculture, du commerce et de la navigation) que l'auteur conclut a la decadence de ce commerce. La revocation de l'idit de Nantes aurait fait passer en Hollande nombre de familles francaises et aurait ete un facteur de son essor demographique. La premiere edition est en trois volumes in-12, a la date de 1768. Il existe, a la date de 1778 : une edition en deux volumes in-4, une autre en cinq volumes in-12. Kress et Querard l'attribuent a Accarias de Serionne. " Cet ouvrage... trace l'histoire du commerce et de la navigation de la Hollande, depuis les temps les plus recules. Il explique par trois causes comment cette nation, peu favorisee par son sol, etait arrivee a une telle prosperite : causes naturelles et physiques, causes morales (gouvernement, justice, politique, impot) ; causes accidentelles (agriculture, industrie, commerce des nations etrangeres). Leipzig, Weygand, 1778. - Erste deutsche Ausgabe, selten. J.-S. Bailly (1736-1793), Sohn eines königlichen Louvre-Aufsehers, wurde 1762 für seine Berechnungen zur Bahn des Halley'schen Kometen in die Akademie der Wissenschaften aufgenommen. Nach weiteren astronomischen Entdeckungen wandte er sich mehr wissenschaftspraktischen Fragen zu, u. a. der Prüfung des Mesmerismus. Während der Französischen Revolution leitete er als Präsident der Nationalversammlung die folgenreiche Sitzung vom 20. Juni, wurde nach dem Sturm auf die Bastille Bürgermeister von Paris und zog schließlich den Hass der Bürger auf sich durch die Anordnung des Massakers auf dem Marsfeld am 7. Juli 1791. Nach seiner Aussage im Prozess gegen Marie Antoinette galt er als "Königsfreund und gewalttätiger Unterdrückung der Volksfreiheit" und wurde guillotiniert. In vorliegender Schrift legt er dar, dass die offensichtlichen Ähnlichkeiten alter Kulturen auf ein vorgeschichtliches hochentwickeltes Volk in Asien hindeuten, von dem alle Hochkulturen abzuleiten sind. ?
