Le tome V contient un supplement de 110 pages : "Preuve incontestable que les Annales Poetiques n'ont en effet aucun rapport avec l'Encyclopedie Poetique; & que ces deux ouvrages sont absolument independans l'un de l'autre". It was the first book printed by P.Fr. Didot after his appointment as printer to the brother of Louis XVI, later Louis XVIII, to whom it is dedicated. Fine copy. Salzburg und Leipzig (d. i. Nördlingen, Beck), 1778. - Erste Ausgabe der scharfen politischen Satire über die Verhältnisse in Süddeutschland. Der Württemberger Journalist Wilhelm Ludwig Wekhrlin (1739-1792) wurde wegen seiner satirischen Erzeugnisse in Wien und Augsburg als "verdächtiger Autor" ausgewiesen und mußte auch Nördlingen wegen eines Pasquills auf den allmächtigen Bürgermeister Tröltsch verlassen. Kurz vor der französischen Revolution sind in seinem Schreiben und Treiben "wenn nicht die Zeit, so doch viele Züge der Zeit lebendig geblieben. Er lachte noch über die Welt und über den Zorn, mit dem sie seinen schonungslosen Witz aufnahm. Als ein Schweizer Kanton seine 'Chronologen' wollte verbrennen lassen, schickte er seinen Schattenriß als Beitrag zu dieser Feierlichkeit" (Goedeke). Enthält auch einiges über Wien, wo Wekhrlin gerade ausgewiesen worden war. Der zweite Teil stammt nicht von Wekhrlin. J Nourse, 1778. Second Edition. Folio. Two vols. in one.. Vol.1: pi\2 A-4U\2; vol.2: pi\2 A-3Z\2. Full calf. Six raised bands and morrocco title plate to spine, lettered in gilt. Boards uniformly scuffed, joints weak, but holding, corners worn back, with tight, sound textblock. Ex libris Tertian's Library. A remarkable piece of scholarship, the present dictionary was revered in its time and largely unreplaced until the mid nineteenth-century. The author, Joseph Baretti, is famous among other things for having been defended by both Joshua Reynolds and Topham Beauclerk at a capital trial at the Old Bailey in 1759, a case in which he was acquitted on grounds of self-defence. Virginia. 1778.. One folded sheet. Approximately 550 words. Tanned at folds. Some ink burn through page. An embossment on one side reads, "Washington County." A small closed tear affects approximately six characters. A manuscript land deed written by Isaac Cox for the sale of land to John Decker. In the deed, Cox refers to "Yohogania County", a Virginia county created in 1776. The county included much of south-western Pennsylvania and overlapped with Pennsylvania's own western claims. The land in question is "on the river Ohio and bounded on the East by lands of Thomas Pollack and on the North by lands of William McMahan, said land goes by the name of the Mingo Bottom containing four hundred acres...." Mingo was a term for the Native Americans, mostly Iroquois, who had been displaced and settled in the northern Ohio river basin. Modern-day Mingo Junction lies in the far rnorthern pan-handle of West Virginia, north of Steubenville, Ohio, and would have had close associations with Washington County, Pennsylvania than Virginia. This association would explain why in 1806 a Washington County clerk approved the deed.

With romantic and illusionistic theatre designs by François Joseph Pfeiffer (1778-1835) Amsterdam, C. Weddepohl, 1845. Folio. Contemporary gilt decorated black cloth, gilt edges. Title printed in gold, lithographed portrait and of 8 handcoloured lithographs by F.J. Pfeiffer, lithographed at V. Desguerrois & Co. 10, (8) pp. Important work for the history of Dutch theatre with refined lithographs with romantic and illusionistic theatre designs by François Joseph Pfeiffer (1778-1835), stagedesigner at the Amsterdam Schouwburg, with descriptions by Jacob van Lennep (1802-1868), and a short biography by G. van Enst Koning. Pfeiffer was one of the most important theatre designers of his time. In 1797 he started to work at the Amsterdam schouwburg (theatre) as a regular stage painter. Later in 1805 his name is for the first time mentioned on a theatre poster. He mainly designed decors for ballet, musical plays and operas. From 1820-1835 he created complete decors for 37 acts, of which unfortunately none are preserved. Good copy.- (Binding expertly restored; some foxing on portrait). Paris, 1778.. Original-Kupferstichansicht von Benard auf festem Papier. Blatt etwas angestaubt. Blattgröße: 25 x 19,3 cm und Größe der Ansicht: 16,4 x 20,8 cm.. Die Ansicht zeigt den Häuptling der Christine-Insel mit Federschmuck, verzierter Muschelplatte, Gesichtstätowierung und Halsschmuck. Das Blatt stammt aus der französischen Erstausgabe von J. Cooks zweiter Seefahrt. Für Cooks zweite Südseereise (1772 - 1775) wurden zwei neuwertige Schiffe ausgebaut und umbenannt in 'Resolution' und 'Adventure'. Die Expedition wurde von Johann Reinhold Forster und seinem Sohn Georg begleitet. Darüberhinaus war der Maler William Hodges dabei und zwei Astronomen, die sich um die Kontrolle der neuen 'time keeper' zu kümmern hatten. Die Reise begann am 13. Juli 1772 in Plymouth. Cook nahm über Kapstadt, wo er ab Ende Oktober einen dreiwöchigen Aufenthalt einlegte, Kurs auf Kap Circumcision ca. 54° Süd. Am 51. Breitengrad traf J. Cook zum ersten Mal auf Eisberge. Am 17. Januar überquerte die Expedition als erste den südlichen Polarkreis und steuerte dann wieder in Richtung Nordost. Cook setzte Kurs auf Tahiti, wo er am 17. August eintraf. Anfang September segelte er weiter und traf Anfang Oktober bei den Tongainseln ein, wo er sehr freundlich bewirtet wurde, was ihn zur Bezeichnung 'Freundschaftsinseln' veranlasste. Wie heute bekannt ist, verdankte er es nur einem Zufall, dass seine Gruppe in der Nacht nach einer der freundlichen Bewirtungen nicht niedergemetzelt wurde. Ihren Plan die Neuankömmlinge zu töten, führten die Insulaner nur wegen Streitigkeiten untereinander im letzten Moment nicht aus. J. Cook wandte sich wieder in Richtung Neuseeland, das er am 21. September sichtete. Am 24. Dezember 1773 befahl er wegen des Eises wieder Kurs Nord. Am 11. Januar 1774 steuerte er südwärts, zum Entsetzen der Mannschaft, die sich bereits auf der Heimreise wähnte. Am 30. Januar erreichte Cook den südlichsten Punkt der Reise, 71° 10' S, 106° 54' W. Cook steuerte nun nordwärts, suchte erfolglos das 1563 als "Kontinent" bezeichnete Juan-Fernandez-Archipel. Cook erreichte am 11. März die Osterinsel, notierte dort "Trinkwasser so schlecht, kaum wert, an Bord gebracht zu werden" und segelte durch die Tuamotus und Melanesien nochmals nach Tahiti (22. April), den Neuen Hebriden und Neuseeland, wobei er noch Neukaledonien entdeckte. Die HMS Adventure hatte Ende 1773 Neuseeland verlassen und war im Juli 1774 um Kap Hoorn segelnd in England angelangt. Sie hatte damit als erste die Erde auf östlichem Kurs umsegelt. Die HMS Resolution stach am 10. November in See, passierte das Hoorn, suchte den Südatlantik ab und entdeckte für England die öden Inseln Südgeorgien und die Südlichen Sandwichinseln. Von Kapstadt richtete die HMS Resolution den Kurs auf St. Helena und Ascension, suchte nach der imaginären Matthäus-Insel, die in portugiesischen Karten des 15. Jahrhundert eingezeichnet war und so nahe an Brasilien lag, dass Cook sich entschied noch die Position von Fernando de Noronha zu bestimmen. Über die Azoren kehrte man am 30. Juli 1775 nach England zurück. Die während der Expedition gesammelten völkerkundlichen Objekte aus der Südsee wurden auf Museen Europas verteilt; ein großer Teil davon gelangte in die Cook/Forster-Sammlung des Völkerkundlichen Museums in Göttingen.

The first page present is the Contents page, followed by complete section of Calendars, etc. Book of Common Prayer is unpaginated. Approximately 400 pages. It is followed by a separately paginated section, The Companion to the Altar (68 pages). Then there is a separate title page for the Whole Book of Psalms. This title page is complete and dated 1778. Printed by John Archdeacon, Printer to the University. Unpaginated. Complete, with index. Previous owners name written in ink on the final page of the index, Susanna Trible, Thornburg. The rear endpapers are covered in neat writing as well. Susanna Trible Writing steal not this Book for fear of shame for in it is the owners name. Also, force may indeed the hart invade but kindness only can persuade. My god my everlasting hope I live upon thy truth thy hands have held my children up and strengthened all my youth. And another in the same fashion on the facing page. Also the name Samuel Trible. A quick genealogical search reveals a Trible family in Devonshire at the time of the publication of this book, who later emigrated to the United States. The Susanna Trible on that family tree died in Illinois in the 1840s. Binding is tight. plain brown leather worn at the edges and hinges. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A new contribution to insect systematics . (DSB). Edition originale - Rare. Fabricius was undoubtedly one of the most distinguished entomologists and ranks with Carl de Geer, P.A. Latreille, A.G. Oliver and other prominent specialists of earlier times. In many respects he surpassed them, especially as a theoretical natural scientist. Linnaeus, whose most important contribution hardly lay in the field of entomology, was full of admiration for him and his colleagues throughout the world expressed great respect for his work... Two basic principles guided Fabricius' approach to entomological systematics : he distinguished, on the one hand, between the artificial and the natural characters ; and, on the other hand, he stressed the importance of the various structures of the mouth... He founded his sytem on the genus and the species which in his opinion constituted the main bases. It seemed especially important to Fabricius that genera were the natural combinations of related species. He believed that classes and ordines were artificial concepts. He seems to have understood that even genera can be classified into the natural system - the nearest equivalent to our present families - but he probably understood that the time was not yet ripe, that scientific knowledge and general outlook were too narrow for such classification. He thought of one large system based on the structure of the mouth organs as being the natural system. It was Fabricius'greatest ambition to build a system based on the naturally defined genera, without doubt a definite and new contribution to insect systematics. Interessant ist besonders der Hinweis auf den Minnesang, im mittelhochdeutschen Originaltext, der sonst in der Geniezeit übersehen, von der Klassik abgelehnt und endgültig erst von den Romantikern wiederentdeckt wurde. Goethe schickte das Manuskript Frau von Stein: "Lieder der Liebe von einem weisen König gesungen und einem weisen Mann kommentiert." – Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt, Titel verso mit handschr. Faujas parcourut la France et l'Europe s'occupant d'étudier la surface du globe, sa constitution et les matières qui la composent. C'est particulièrement sur les produits volcaniques qu'il étendit ses observations. Dans cet ouvrage, il développe sa théorie sur la formation des volcans, théorie plus ingénieuse que toute celles émises jusqu'alors sur ce sujet. Très bel exemplaire.
