[Campbell, Thomas]:
A PHILOSOPHICAL SURVEY OF THE SOUTH OF IRELAND IN A SERIES OF LETTERS TO JOHN WATKINSON, M.D
Dublin: Printed for W. Whitestone [et al], 1778.. xvi,478pp. plus six plates (two folding) of buildings and artifacts. Octavo. Modern cloth, gilt label (attributing the work to Watkinson). Early ink name on title, old stamps of a defunct mercantile library, slight discoloration to extreme upper fore-corners of first few leaves, but a very good, crisp copy. First Dublin edition, previously published in London the year before. "There is not much philosophy in this book, which is supposed to record the tour of an Englishman in the south of Ireland, and gives a description of the chief towns. Sundry remarks on the trade of the country are thrown in, and Campbell advocates !a political and commercial union! with England. Boswell styles the !Survey! !a very entertaining book, which has, however, one fault - that it assumes the fictitious character of an Englishman.! In the !Survey! Johnson's epitaph on Goldsmith appeared for the first time in print" - DNB. BRADSHAW 5550 (London edition). T85072.

DEAN FILLION [DOYEN DE LA FACULTE MEDECINE DE REIMS]
1778 HANDWRITTEN AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT WITH COVER LETTER "CATALOGUE DES ETUDIANTS ET DES GRADIES DE LA FACULTE DE MEDECINE EN L'UNIVERSITE DE REIMS" FRO THE COLLECTION OF SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS
Reims, France, 1778. Very interesting educational history from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Reims. Ancient document is a catalogue of students and grades. Biographical Notes: SIR THOMAS PHILLIPPS (1792-1872). Born in 1792, Sir Thomas Phillipps from childhood was obsessed with the idea of obtaining virtually anything written or printed on paper, including cartloads of documents from wastepaper merchants and the entire inventories of booksellers. "I wish to have one copy of every book in the world," he declared to a friend. He very nearly succeeded. His collection ultimately grew to more than 100,000 books and at least 60,000 manuscripts. As a result of his extravagant purchases, Sir Thomas was permanently on the verge of bankruptcy and was constantly pursued by creditors. So many books arrived at his house that it was impossible to unpack his acquisitions much less keep pace with them. Visiting scholars, driven to distraction, would spend days hunting for an elusive text in the dusty heaps that filled every room. Because Sir Thomas has a morbid dread of fire, most of his collection was housed in coffinlike boxes that could be carted away quickly. Visitors to Middle Hill were struck too, by the presence of numerous logs, a ploy he used to lure beetles away from his books. As Sir Thomas relentlessly pursued his passion, the house itself began to crumble and its floors started to sag under the cast weight of hundreds of tons of paper. His neglect of Middle Hill was partly deliberate, however. Sir Thomas's chief enemy in life, James Halliwell, had married his daughter against his wishes. It appears that Halliwell was, in Sir Thomas' eyes, the worst kind of criminal, a book thief who had stolen valuable works from university libraries and even from his father-in-law. Having no sons, Sir Thomas was unable to prevent Halliwell from inheriting his estate. To ensure that his detested heir would never receive anything of value, Sir Thomas's solution was to allow Middle Hill to fall unto complete disrepair. He even went so far as to chop down and sell for lumber the centuries-old oak trees that lined the majestic mile-long drive to his home. In 1863 Sir Thomas decided to move - in order to accommodate his books. With the aid of 160 men, 103 wagonloads of books and papers drawn by 230 horses, the books were lumbered from Middle Hill top their new estate in nearby Cheltenham. It is said that for years afterwards the countryside was littered with the remains of carts that had collapsed under the sheer weight of the Phillipps collection. Sir Thomas continues to add to his library until his death in 1872. After Sir Thomas's death, his immediate family had no room for his collection. So vast was the library that although individual items and large sections were sold privately or through numerous auction sales, the Phillipps collection is still being sold more than a century after the death of its owner. In the course of its sales, many treasures have come to light. As late as 1964, part of the long-lost and unique medieval manuscript of the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphoses appeared and was subsequently reunited with its other half at Magdalen College, Oxford. Once destined for destruction as worthless wastepaper, this and many other priceless works were saved by the single-minded obsession of the greatest bibliomaniac of all time.. Autograph. Manuscript. Very Fine. 8vo - over 7!" - 9!" tall.

Smith, Adam
An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. Second Edition.
London, printed for W.Strahan; and T.Cadell, in the Strand, 1778. - (8), 510; (8), 589, (1) SS. 4°. Zeitgenössische Ganzldr.bde.mit roten Rückenschildchen. Goldsmith 11663; Grolier 100; Kress B 154; PMM 221. - Full English description upon request. [Attributes: First Edition]

Tommaso d'Aquino Thomas Aquinas THOMAS, Aquinus
1778 SUMMA TOTIUS THEOLOGIAE THOMAE AQUINATIS COMPLETE 7 VOLS
Church of Ireland
THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER 1778
Printed By the Executors of David Hay, Assignee of the Late Boulter Grierson, Printer to the King's Most Excellent Majesty, Dublin 1778 - Unpag. Subtitle, "And Administration of the Sacraments, and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, According to the Use of the Church of Ireland: Together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, Pointed as They are to be Sung or Said in Churches; and the Form or Manner of Making, Ordaining, and Consecrating of Bishops, Priests, and Deacons." Front cover is detached. Rear cover is attached to spine with a newer, thin reddish strip of leather which wraps half-way around the spine. This repair is cracked along the rear spine hinge. Half of the original spine, with five raised bands, is exposed. Covers and spine are very aged, scraped, rubbed, worn, cracked and chipped along extremities. Corners are bumped and frayed to the boards. This volume is protected by a fairly new, gray cloth-over-boards, tri-fold wrapper. This wrapper is a little worn along the exterior hinges and, occasionally, cracked along the interior hinges, but otherwise in very good condition. In addition, there is an outer, custom-fit case of black leather over heavy boards. This case has five raised bands and bright gilt, blind-stamped lettering on the spine. Cover and spine of case are aged, worn and rubbed, particularly along extremities. The edges of the top cover are cracked and split for approximately 3" to 4". The overall condition of this sturdy case is good. Interior is aged and foxed, but clean and tight. The rear fep is entitled "An Alphabetical Table Shewing Where to find each Psalm by its Beginning." This page has two closed tears. One is approx. 1" long and the other, near the top of the page, is approximately 3" long. This fep is also stuck to the rear paste-down approximately 1 1/2" in from the hinge. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Jonathan Carver
Travels Through the Interior Parts of North America in the Years 1766, 1767, and 1768.
8vo. pp. 4 p.l., [20], xvi, [17]-543, [1] directions to binder, 2 engraved folding maps & 4 engraved plates. 19th century gilt stamped full calf with raised bands at spine. Carver's book was an immediate success when first published in 1778, and a second London edition followed the next year; over thirty editions and versions have been published since in several languages. A very important book in the history of the exploration of the American West as Carver was the first English-speaking explorer to venture west of the upper Mississippi River. He anticipated the idea of a contintental divide as he was the first to mention a large mountain range to the south (presumably the Rocky Mountains) that blocks the westward passage and serves as a continental divide. Further, the name 'Oregon' appears in print here for the first time, both in the text, and on one of the maps. "Carver penetrated farther into the West than any other English explorer before the Revolution...[and] stimulated curios [Publisher: Printed for the author and sold by J.
