Tome I. [GASSAUD]. |
Ca: Campbell Delin: H: Hulsbergh Sculp: [n.d. c.1731.] Engraving. Plate 381 x 247mm. 15 x 9¾". Garden plan from Henry Hulsbergh's "Vitruvius Brittanicus" series. Lowther Castle in the county of Westmoreland, has belonged to the Earls of Lonsdale since the Middle Ages. Circa 1690 the first Lowther Hall was demolished by John, 1st Viscount Lonsdale. The demolition took place to make room for a new house that was built 1692-95. Viscount Lonsdale consulted the best architects of the day (Robert Hooke, William Talman), but used none of them. Talman's design for the elevation may have been used, however, and Machell, a neighbor and antiquary, may have helped with Talman's designs. This second house was 15 bays with projecting wings and enclosed an inner court. The interior had a series of painted ceilings by Verrio depicting Olympian scenes. In 1718, when the new house was just completed, it was badly damaged by fire. Lord Lonsdale consulted James Gibbs and Colen Campbell about rebuilding.

Inigo Jones. WARE, Isaac.
Designs of Inigo Jones and Others.
|
- London, Isaac Ware [1731]. Quarto contemporary calf (label missing, front hinge cracked but firm); engraved title, 5 engraved pages listing plates on three leaves and 48 plates numbered to 53 (six double page of which five carry two numbers). A rather good copy, fresh and crisp, with the charming armorial bookplate of White of Lincolns-Inn which is handcoloured and touched with gold. I suspect this is William Archibald Armstrong White but there were a few Whites of Lincolns Inn. First edition. Ware's first substantial production as part of the Burlington circle, in a way a popular version of the grander book produced by William Kent in 1727. Here the designs are mostly those of Jones and Kent (one is Burlington's) but a few had not been published before. Eileen Harris pointed out in her note on the William Kent book that its greatest influence is apparent in the use of details - doors, windows, ceilings, fireplaces &c - and doubtless the same claim can be made for this book; there are many fine details.

[Cave, Edward, (Ed. )]
The Gentleman's Magazine: Or, Monthly Intelligencer
|
London: for the Author [and others], 1731–1814. 116 volumes, octavo. Late 18th-and early 19th-century calf, sides ruled with a double gilt fillet, smooth spines with gilt centre-tools, red morocco lettering-pieces, marbled endpapers. 1, 663 engraved plates (334 folding, 7 hand coloured). A few joints split or heads of spines chipped but a particularly nice set and an unusually long run of this famous periodical from its first issue, uniformly bound (only the simple gilt decoration on the spines differing a little as the set was put together over the years). Provenance: rococo bookplates of Edward Warner of Leyton in the earlier volumes, succeeded by 19th-century armorial bookplates of his son, Thomas Courtenay Warner. An excellent run from the first volume onwards of the work that gave birth to one of the major publishing forms of the modern era, the magazine. "It began modestly as a digest of London newspapers and periodicals for country customers (an orientation signalled in Cave's editorial pseudonym, Sylvanus Urban), but it went on to prosper and survive until 1922. At 6d. and seven octavo half-sheets it truly gave 'more in quantity, and greater variety, than any Book of the kind and price' (Bavius)" (ODNB). "By January 1739 original matter had largely replaced … extracts; the magazine assumed a more serious character, and included parliamentary reports, maps, music, and a record of publications. The change in the character of the paper was in accordance with suggestions made to the editor by Samuel Johnson, who at this time became a regular contributor (until 1744), with considerable influence on its management. He at first edited, and subsequently wrote, the parliamentary reports. The Gentleman's Magazine lasted until 1914" (Oxford Companion to English Literature, Sir Paul Harvey, ed. ) After Cave's death in 1754, the magazine was run by his family until John Nichols took it over in 1778. The periodical is inevitably rich in historical interest. Of particular note is an early printing of the American Declaration of Independence (vol. XLVI, August 1776) among much else on the American Revolution; while volume LXXVI Part 2 (November 1806) contains the first printing of the classic children's poem The Butterfly's Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast by William Roscoe (see Carpenter and Prichard, Oxford Companion to Children's Literature). As usual, the first few volumes comprise early reprints (Jan 1731 is the fifth edition; Feb 1731, the fourth; and so on). Cave's success at first took him by surprise; he was compelled to reprint magazines from the earliest years to match demand for back numbers and volumes. From vol. IV onwards in this set all parts are first editions. Courtney & Nichol Smith pp. 5–6. A FINE RUN OF THE GENT'S MAG

!_!# Anonym (Nicolas Jouin)

|
Pregiata edizione cominiana delle opere poetiche latine dell'umanista cremonese; "This seems the best edition of Vida's works" (Di Cesare). Comprende: Christiados, Libri VI; Hymni de rebus divinis; Poetocorum libri III; Bombycum libri II; Scacchia ludus; Carmina diversi generis. Graesse, VII, 302. Olschki, 12459. Salimbeni, 264. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Pope, Alexander; Pope
An Epistle to the Right Honourable Richard Earl of Burlington.
|
1731 - CONSULT THE GENIUS OF THE PLACE POPE, Alexander. [Of Taste]. An Epistle to the Right Honourable Richard Earl of Burlington. Occasion'd by his publishing Palladio's designs of the Baths, Arches, Theatres, &c. of Ancient Rome. 14, [1] pp. Folio, 309 x 204 mm, bound in recent English green morocco over boards. London: Printed for L. Gilliver, 1731. First Edition. This is the highly influential poem in which Pope proclaimed his rule: "In all, let Nature never be forgot. Consult the Genius of the Place." In this Epistle Pope praised the gardens at Burlington's new Palladian villa at Chiswick House; these gardens served as the prototypes of the English school of landscape design and foreshadowed the work of "Capability" Brown. Using his own collection of drawings purchased in Italy in 1719, Burlington published Palladio's "incomplete" antiquarian studies of baths, amphitheatres and other Roman buildings. Pope's Epistle was to have accompanied Burlington's publication of Palladio's antiquities. "The famous Epistle attacked the work of other classical architects such as James Gibbs, who were thought to have misunderstood Palladio and antiquity. It also marked the creation of a social milieu of poets, musicians, landscape designers and artists that clustered around the figure of Burlington" (Palladio and Northern Europe, 1999, p. 129). The work proved popular and various issues of the first edition are known to exist, each with small typographical differences; this copy is distinguished by the following points: price on title-page "1 s."; page 6, line 13 begins: "Oft have have you." (sic); and with ten books listed on p. (15). Foxon P908. Griffith 259. ESTC T005700. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Kolben [Or Kolbe], Peter (1675-1726)
The Present State of the Cape of Good-Hope: Or, a Particular Account of the Several Nations of the Hottentots...Together With a Short Account of the Dutch Settlement at the Cape...Done Into English From the Original By Mr. Medley
|
. London: W. Innys, 1731. 2 volumes, 8vo. (7 3/4 x 4 3/4 inches). 2 engraved frontispieces, 28 engraved plates (2 folding), engraved folding map. Contemporary mottled calf, spines with raised bands in six compartments, red and green morocco labels in the second and third compartments, the others with a repeat decoration in gilt. First edition in English of a classic early account of the Hottentots and the southern tip of Africa: a lovely copy with Royal provenance. "Peter Kolben had ardently desired, from his earliest youth, to travel, and was overjoyed when his patron, the Baron van Krosick, selected him to proceed to the Cape to make astronomical researches in that country. He sailed from Texel on December 22, 1704, having made arrangements with the Dutch East India Company for his passage...He landed in the country on June 11th, and remained there till April 1713, when he returned to Amsterdam...Mr. Medley [the translator of the English edition] was of opinion that [Kolben] was not subject to 'transports of imagination, ' although he admits that some discrepancies will be found in the account of the Hottentots...It is contended, however, that despite a few inaccuracies, the volumes contain 'the exactest History of the Hottentots the World has yet seen.'...The natural history section was of considerable value at the time of publication, Sclater...observing that it 'contains the earliest list of South African animals' and there is a full account of the government of the country, with detailed descriptions of the various settlements, and a mass of information respecting the habits and customs of the native races" (Mendelssohn). First published in German in 1719, this is the first edition in English. Mendelssohn I, 844-845.

SCHEUCHZER, Johann Jakob
Physica Sacra
|
Augsburg and Ulm: [Christian Ulrich Wagner]. 1731-1732-1733-1735. Contemporary mottled calf (hinges cracked but sound) Folio . FIRST EDITION (published the same year in German: same plates in both) of this monumental illustrated natural history of the Baroque period. "In Scheuchzer's gigantic work, Physica sacra, the Baroque attains, philosophically as well as artistically, its high point and its conclusion. It is the last of those elegant works which do not really contain illustrations to a text but which are, in effect, composed of splendid plates with a text to accompany them. In Scheutzer's works everything tends toward the new style in the art of illustration; nonetheless the old technique is still predominant. Scheuchzer was simultaneously an empirical natural scientist and a Christian who believed in the Bible. He hit upon the idea of investigating and supporting with modern methods all places in which the Bible poses problems of natural science. In this way a Kupferbibel [German title] arose which was at the same time a Physica sacra; a sanctification of the earth had been accomplished. After long preparation the Zürich professor and Oberstadarzt approached the final work. He called upon the best engravers of the time and made the whole splendor of Baroque chalcography appear once more. For him, however, it was too late. He did not survive the completion of the work." (Faber du Faur, German Baroque Literature, p. 472; German text ed.)& Scheuchzer (1672-1733), an eminent natural scientist and physician from Zurich, personally oversaw the creation of the illustrations which were largely based on his own natural history cabinet or on other famous European cabinets of rare specimens. He entrusted the central designs to Johann Melchior Füssli and the elaborate borders to Johann Daniel Preissler. The plates were beautifully executed by a group of highly skilled engravers including Georg Daniel Heumann and Johann August Corvinus.& The somewhat eccentric numbering of the plates has led to different counts in the various bibliographies. The present copy is complete with all the extra plates called for. The extraordinary plates cover the fields of botany, zoology, astronomy, geography, architecture, emblematic and religious themes. Most of the plates appear within elaborate Baroque frames.& A fine set rarely found in such fresh, clean and complete condition. Also of note in collating the volume I found an apparently unrecorded Americana reference and illustration of three American birds; a vulture, falcon and a golden eagle (vol. II, p. 300, plate no. 251: American Geyer, Geyerfalck, Gold. Adler) Engraved frontispiece, 2 portraits (1 in mezzotint), with 760 engravings on 758 plates; plates numbered 1-750 (engravings 37, 38, & 39 on a single plate), complete with the extra plates numbered 39A, 99B, 133A, 217A, 223A, 340 A & B, 446 A, B & C, 463A & 470A; 5 plates are double-page; as usual plate LXVI with partial hand-coloring of a rainbow. The engravings are by Corvinus, Friedrich, Heumann, Sedlezky, Sperling, Tyroff (& others) after the drawings of J.M. Füssli. Two small collection blind stamps on title- pages; some very faint foxing on some text leaves; the text paper in last volume, as usual, has some light toning. Fine set. § Brunet V, 198; Graesse VI, 300; Nissen ZBI 3660; Faber du Faur 1855 (German issue)

Tagli rossi. Frontespizi in rosso e nero con vignette calcografiche.
