SOLIS Y RIBADENEYRA; SOLIS Y RIBADENEYRA, Antonio
History of the Conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards
1724. A SPANISH CLASSIC OF HISTORIOGRAPHY SOLIS Y RIBADENEYRA, Antonio de. History of the Conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards. Five parts in one volume. [18], 163, [1], 252, 152 pp., including 4-page list of Subscribers. With engraved frontispiece of Cortez, 6 plates (1 folding) and 2 maps. Folio, 350 x 245 mm, bound in contemporary blind panelled calf; rebacked and repaired. London: Printed for T. Woodward [et al.], 1724.|~| First Edition in English. One of the key works of Mexican history, "the most remarkable history in the Castillian language" (Prescott), and "undoubtedly the most popular history of America that had then been written; and the number of editions published even up to the nineteenth century, in Spanish, French, Italian, English and German, testify to its popularity long after the initial interest of historical information had passed" (Cox). This fundamental work on the conquest of Mexico remains a classic of the late "siglo do oro," the golden age of Spanish literature. Solis (1610-1686), a Spanish poet and dramatist (and friend of Calderon), became secretary to Carlos II and succeeded Antonio de Leon Pinelo as official "Cronista mayor de Indias." His precise descriptions of events, covering the appointment of Hernan Cortes as commander of the invading force, through the fall of the city of Tenochtitlan (ciudad de Mexico), make the Conquest a work of lasting value. In addition to the full account of the relations between Cortes and Montezuma, there is a wealth of information on the daily lives of the Indians. Sabin justifiably calls this work "the most popular history of Mexico that had then been written." First endleaf a modern replacement; frontispiece guarded and stained; worming at upper right corners of first nine leaves (with repairs), lower right corner of p. 129 repaired; final plate with old marginal repair. Overall a very good, crisp copy, with an early ownership inscription on title-page: "F. I. Gorges Morres, Jan. 11, 1774." Sabin 86487. Hill, p. 278.

Chronicles, English).
A complete set of all the English Chronicles, as listed below.
      - London: various publishers, 1724Ð1815. 28 vols., large 4to, 24 vols. in full olive morocco, gilt-panelled backstrips, raised bands, red labels, gilt edges, 4 vols. in full red morocco to match. A very fine set, with all the de luxe illuminated plates not found in most copies, of great rarity thus. See Lowndes II, 1086-87: the Quarto Series of Chronicles, published by the London trade, mostly from the old folios, under the editorial superintendence of Sir Henry Ellis, E.V. Utterson, R.H. Evans, F. Douce, [T.F.] Dibdin, and others. Lowndes continues that the series was completed in 15 vols. of Chronicles, and 2 of Fuller's Worthies, making in all 17 vols. To these many more volumes are sometimes added, to make a long series of Chronicles the Froissart and Monstrelet, by Col. Johnes, sometimes occur with illuminated plates and in this state are scarce and expensive, but are necessary in a first-class set. The publisher has been in the habit of making up long sets [i.e. as this set here offered], including the illuminated plates, generally bound in 28 volumes, in olive morocco, gilt edges, for £105 or more. Thus this is the set exactly as described by Lowndes, consisting of: Holinshed (6 vols.), Hall (1 vol.), Grafton (2 vols.), Hardyng (1 vol.), Fabyan (1 vol.), William of Malmesbury (1 vol.), Fuller's Worthies (2 vols.), Arnold and Rastell together (1 vol.), Robert of Gloucester (2 vols.), Peter Langtoft (2 vols.), Joinville (1 vol.), Froissart (4 vols., illuminated), and Monstrelet (4 vols. illuminated). The olive bindings are probably Charles Lewis; the red bindings are signed by Wright. In 30 years of collecting antiquarianism I have never seen a complete set such as this. Although written in French, Rapin de Thoyras's great history was produced for the endorsement of the British monarchy, with a dedicatory epistle to King George I. The original version was almost the only history of England available in France in the first half of the eighteenth century. A Protestant, Paul Rapin (sieur of Thoyras, and therefore styled Thoyras de Rapin), enlisted in the Dutch army and came to England with William of Orange in 1688, and during the Williamite war in Ireland took part in the Battle of the Boyne, and was wounded at the Siege of Limerick, in 1690. In 1693, he settled first in the Hague and then at Wesel, where, in 1707, he began his great multi-volume work, L'Histoire d'Angleterre. (Ref: M&B; Tooley) Volume I contained, in five books, an account of Britain from the time of the Ancient British to the Norman Conquest, and made an unsually thorough attempt to draw upon the various principal sources. Volume II (Books VI-VIII) covered from William the Conqueror to Henry III; Volume III (IX, X and XI), Edward I to Henry V; Volume IV (XII to XIV), Henry VI to Henry VII; Volume V (XV), Henry VIII; Volume VI (XVI & XVII), Edward VI to Elizabeth, and Vol VII (XVIII), James I and Charles I. It was printed at the Hague in 1724, with illustrations and allegorical endpieces designed and engraved by F.M. La Cave, and with a dedicatory epistle to King George I. #11;

Sympson, 14 (2 double-page) full-page plates; engraved head-and tail-pieces, engraved historiated initials Anstis, John (1669!1744), herald and antiquary. "Despite his reputation as a Jacobite, and his friendship with fellow antiquariansNbut unreconstructed JacobitesNsuch as Thomas Hearne, he was able to form a working relationship with Sir Robert Walpole. No doubt this was because his main activities were now centred around his duties as Garter king of arms and his associated antiquarian interests. In 1724 he obtained an order for publishing the Register of the Order of the Garter, which was printed at his own expense....The London Magazine (1744) wrote of him following his death that Oin him were joined the learning of Camden, and the industry, without the inaccuracies of Sir William DugdaleO (p. 153). Leake criticized his OprolixityO and his appearance Oof a just proportion and middle size, but of a swarthy complexion, a great sloven, and so begrimed in snuffO but also noted that Ohe had a capacity and genius for his profession, joined with industry, judgement and a great memoryO (Wagner and Rowse, 24). Anstis was an indefatigable antiquarian whose correspondence with fellow scholars such as Thomas Hearne and Humfrey Wanley testifies to his wide interests. " [Oxford DNB] ESTC t140331. Lowndes I,50. The original version was almost the only history of England available in France in the first half of the eighteenth century. A Protestant, Paul Rapin (sieur of Thoyras, and therefore styled Thoyras de Rapin), enlisted in the Dutch army and came to England with William of Orange in 1688, and during the Williamite war in Ireland took part in the Battle of the Boyne, and was wounded at the Siege of Limerick, in 1690. In 1693, he settled first in the Hague and then at Wesel, where, in 1707, he began his great multi-volume work, L'Histoire d'Angleterre. (Ref: M&B; Tooley) Volume I contained, in five books, an account of Britain from the time of the Ancient British to the Norman Conquest, and made an unsually thorough attempt to draw upon the various principal sources. Volume II (Books VI-VIII) covered from William the Conqueror [Attributes: First Edition]

THE THIRTY NINE ARTICLES, AND THE CONSTITUTIONS AND CANONS, OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND; Together with Several Acts of Parliament
London: John Baskett. Bound in contemporary calf ornamented in the "Cambridge" style. 1724. 1st edition. hb. The title continues: "Together with several Acts of Parliament and Proclamations concerning Ecclesiastical Matters, That were not in former Editions, Some whereof are to be Read in Churches. To which are added several Injunctions of His Majesty to the Clergy of the Kingdom, and the Directions of the Arch-Bishop of Canterbury to the Clergy of his Province." The Thirty Nine Articles were established in 1563 and are the historic defining statements of Anglican doctrine especially as it relates to the practices of the Church of Rome. They were to establish the uniqueness of the Anglican religion in the United Kingdom, and elsewhere, through their incoporation into, and propagation through, the Book of Common Prayer. Both WorldCat and ESTC record the first edition of this title as being in 1724; the latter suggesting six separate printings in that year, all by the famous London printer John Baskett, five of them being re-issues with a cancel title leaf. The only printing not identified by ESTC as a re-issue is our copy, which paginates as [4], 167, [5], [2], blank. The joints are cracked, and the binding is worn. Contents remarkably clean, with only occasional foxing, and still tightly stitched. .

TUCIDIDE
L' histoire de Thucydide de la guerre du Peloponese, continuée par Xenophon. De la traduction de Nicolas Perrot, Sieur d'Ablancourt.
Paris David 1724 2 Voll. in 8vo; Leg. coeva in p. pelle marmoriz., tit. fregi in oro sui dorsi a nervi., tagli rossi a spruzzo, sguardie marmoriz.; pp. 26 nn. (incl.

Copper-engraved maps, with period outline colour. Good condition but just shaved into plate area at upper and lower margins. 19 3/4 x 24 1/2 inches. A pair of hemispherical maps of the World, by De l'Isle. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. These maps exemplify the characteristics which led to De l'Isle achieving his reputation as the outstanding cartographer of his age. He was very exacting about geographical information, and what wasn't known, for example the northwestern coast of North America, he left blank. He avoided to a remarkable extent common mistakes passed on from mapmaker to mapmaker, including the widely believed notion that California was an island. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive.

PICART, Bernard
Gemmae Antiquae Caelatae. Pierres Antiques Gravees
1724 1724. FIRST EDITION. PICART, Bernard and STOSCH, Philipp von (Baron). Gemmae Antiquae Caelatae. (Pierres Antiques Gravees). Amsterdam: Bernard Picart, 1724. Folio, period style three quarter speckled calf, marbled boards. $4500. Large-paper first edition of this original sourcebook for the neoclassical style, with 69 (of 70) full-page finely engraved plates of classical gemstone designs. Bernard Picart was one of the most famous copper engravers and print sellers of his generation in Europe. In 1710, he moved from Paris to Amsterdam, at the time a major center for both publishing and printmaking. For the next two decades Picart's fine work positioned him as the successor to Romeyn de Hooghe. He was especially adept in portraiture, ornamental design and mythological and religious subjects, both copied after the old masters and through his own imagination. For the classical ornamental designs illustrated in this work, Picart obtained access to rare European collections of seals and ancient carved hardstones. The descriptions were written by Prussian antiquarian and gem-collector Baron Philipp von Stosch, whose own great collection eventually contained over 10,000 cameos, intaglios, and antique glass pastes, the majority of which went to the museums in Berlin. A volume of inestimable value to antiquarians and historians, Gemmae Antiquae Caelatae immediately joined the repertory of books on classical antiquities that informed the fledgling neoclassical style. "Ouvrage assez recherche" (Brunet V:552). Text in Latin and French, title pages in red and black, embellished with engraved title vignettes, headpieces and initial letters. Without plate 29. Cohen-de Ricci 959. Blackmer 1613. Graesse VI, 504. Plates generally quite clean. An attractive copy.

Some light browning, contemporary annotations, nicely rebound in modern speckled calf, gilt rule edged raised bands with gilt lettered title label to spine. ESTCT126275. William Hawkins (1681/2–1750), serjeant-at-law. ‘... His career as a legal writer began as early as 1711 with an abridgement of Coke upon Littleton, which reached a fourth edition in 1822. He is best known in the legal profession for his Pleas of the Crown (1716–21), a copy of which he presented to Oriel. This treatise may indeed have been his principal qualification for the coif. It was the first substantial exposition of English criminal law to be printed since that by Sir Edward Coke (1552–1634), and it represented a distinct advance in terms of analysis and detail. The masterpiece by Sir Matthew Hale (1609–1676), the Historia placitorum coronae, was not published until 1736, and even then it did not supplant Hawkins, being an earlier composition. In the third edition of Hawkins, in 1739, references to Hale were inserted by G. L. Scott. Posthumous editions appeared in 1762, 1771 (by Thomas Leach), 1787, 1795, and 1824 (by John Curwood), and a summary was published in 1728 (second edition 1770) ...’ US$652

Burnet, Bishop Gilbert
Bishop Burnet's History of His Own Time., Vol. I: From the Restoration of King Charles II. To the Settlement of King William and Queen Mary at the Revolution: To which is prefix'd A Summary Recapitulation of Affairs in Church and State from King James I
Thomas Ward London: Thomas Ward, 1724 Volume I printed in 1724 Volume II printed in 1734. Sumptuously bound in brown & caramel calf with gilt rule borders & exquisitely tooled floret & foliate decoration. Gilt titles & borders in spine compartments with 6 raised bands. Boards showing age wear as expected (bumper corners, rubbed extremities, pitting here and there) but nothing worth particular note or that compromises the stability of the books. Vol. I: [16], 836 pages; edited by Gilbert Burnet, second son of the Bishop, and others; tear in page 1 repaired with archival film. Vol. II: [22], 765, [1] pages; edited, with a life of the author, by Sir Thomas Burnet. Inscription to the verso of the title of Vol. II reads: "The Original Manuscripts of Both Volumes of this history will be deposited in the Cotton Library by T Burnett." Contents extremely crisp, clean and tight considering the age. The work by which his fame is chiefly sustained, his History of my Own Times, was, by his direction, not to be published until 6 years after his death. It appeared in 1723. It gives a sketch of the history of the English Civil War and the Commonwealth of England, and a detailed account of the immediately succeeding period down to 1713. While not free from egotism and some party feeling, it is written with a sincere desire for accuracy and fairness, and it has largely the authority of an eye-witness. Burnet was uniquely placed to record the history of England and Scotland from the reign of Charles II to Queen Anne; his eager moralizing and forceful prose recall the crisis of Protestantism that sparked that great conflagration. The style, if somewhat lacking in dignity, is lively and picturesque. The strength of this work was such that it has had modern (although abridged) reprints as The History of His Own Times. Burnet`s History of His Own Time is indispensable to any serious study of the Glorious Revolution of 1688. FOR COMPREHENSIVE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THIS BOOK PLEASE SEE OUR WEBSITE. OVERWEIGHT, REQUIRES ADDITIONAL SHIPPING COST . First Edition. Full-Calf. Very Good ++. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
