Trois volumes in-4, plein veau jaspe de l'epoque, dos a six nerfs, cloisonnes et fleuronnes, pieces de titre grenat et pieces de tomaison verte, double filet sur les plats, tranches jaspees. (Trois coiffes et coins uses, cinq mors fendus, un plat detache. Mouillures marginales.) BON EXEMPLAIRE. ***___***___*** Three volumes in-4, full calf marbled of the time, back with six nerves, compartmentalized and blossomed, parts of garnet-red title and parts of green volume number, double net on the dishes, marbled sections. (Clear Aureoles on the dishes. Three used caps, five split bits and worn corner. Some layers piquUs, wettings marginal and angular.) First edition given by Pierre COSTE. It is decorated, with the first volume, of the portrait of Montaigne by BROOMS, engraved by CHEREAU the young person and gone back to 1723. Protestant originating in UzÞs, Pierre Coste left France and took refuge in England at the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Translator of Locke and Newton, his edition of Montaigne is made on the edition Angelier of 1595 to which it adds 7 letters of Montaigne. TCHEMERZINE VIII, 441: "one of most beautiful and the best editions of Montaigne". Collection POTTIEE-SPERRY, 19. GOOD. Premiere edition donnee par Pierre COSTE. Elle est ornee, au premier volume, du portrait de Montaigne par GENETS, grave par CHEREAU le jeune et date de 1723. Protestant originaire d'Uzes, Pierre Coste quitta la France et se refugia en Angleterre au moment de la revocation de l'Edit de Nantes. Leder der Zeit mit Goldprägung.Einband berieben und bestossen, papierbedingt gebräunt. - Das Messbuch (lat. missale) ist das wichtigste liturgische Buch der katholischen Kirche abendländischer Tradition. Es enthält vor allem die Messordnung (lat. ordo missae) und die Gebete, die in der Messe vom Priester gesungen oder gesprochen werden: Tagesgebet, Gabengebet, Schlussgebet (= Gebet nach der Kommunion), Gebet über das Volk Hochgebete einschließlich der Präfationen, und Begleitgebete zur Eucharistie ferner die gleich bleibenden Texte (Ordinarium Missae) Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Vater unser, Agnus Dei. Außerdem beschreibt das Messbuch die liturgischen Handlungen weithin in roter (lat.: ruber) Schrift, daher die Bezeichnung "Rubriken".

(qqs rouss.). Edition originale. Remise en cause de la specificite du contenu moral de la religion chretienne par une defense de la "vertu des paiens", de la metempsycose, par le refus du "Fatum" des Anciens et de la grace des theologiens, au nom de la liberte. L'auteur conclut "qu'il n'y a aucune verite de theologie naturelle que la Philosophie humaine n'ait connue" (chap. 33). Le theme sera largement repris et exploite par les philosophes des Lumieres. L'ouvrage fut reedite par la suite sous le titre de "Theologie payenne...". (Colon, 'Siecle des Lumieres', 24:256). De la bibliotheque du chancelier et Garde des Sceaux Henri-Francois d'Aguesseau (1668-1751), avec pieces d'armoiries aux angles et au dos (en partie grattees) et armoiries au centre recouvertes par des medaillons de maroquin olive. London: various publishers, 1724–1815. 28 vols., large 4to, 24 vols. in full olive morocco, gilt-panelled backstrips, raised bands, red labels, gilt edges, 4 vols. in full red morocco to match. A very fine set, with all the de luxe illuminated plates not found in most copies, of great rarity thus. See Lowndes II, 1086-87: “the Quarto Series of Chronicles, published by the London trade, mostly from the old folios, under the editorial superintendence of Sir Henry Ellis, E.V. Utterson, R.H. Evans, F. Douce, [T.F.] Dibdin, and others.” Lowndes continues that the series “was completed in 15 vols. of Chronicles, and 2 of Fuller’s Worthies, making in all 17 vols. . . . To these many more volumes are sometimes added, to make a long series of Chronicles . . . the Froissart and Monstrelet, by Col. Johnes, sometimes occur with illuminated plates and in this state are scarce and expensive, but are necessary in a first-class set. The publisher has been in the habit of making up long sets [i.e. as this set here offered], including the illuminated plates, generally bound in 28 volumes, in olive morocco, gilt edges, for £105 or more. . . .” Thus this is the set exactly as described by Lowndes, consisting of: Holinshed (6 vols.), Hall (1 vol.), Grafton (2 vols.), Hardyng (1 vol.), Fabyan (1 vol.), William of Malmesbury (1 vol.), Fuller’s Worthies (2 vols.), Arnold and Rastell together (1 vol.), Robert of Gloucester (2 vols.), Peter Langtoft (2 vols.), Joinville (1 vol.), Froissart (4 vols., illuminated), and Monstrelet (4 vols. illuminated). The olive bindings are probably Charles Lewis; the red bindings are signed by Wright. In 30 years of collecting antiquarianism I have never seen a complete set such as this.

See Lowndes II, 1086-87: the Quarto Series of Chronicles, published by the London trade, mostly from the old folios, under the editorial superintendence of Sir Henry Ellis, E.V. Utterson, R.H. Evans, F. Douce, [T.F.] Dibdin, and others. Lowndes continues that the series was completed in 15 vols. of Chronicles, and 2 of Fuller's Worthies, making in all 17 vols. To these many more volumes are sometimes added, to make a long series of Chronicles the Froissart and Monstrelet, by Col. Johnes, sometimes occur with illuminated plates and in this state are scarce and expensive, but are necessary in a first-class set. The publisher has been in the habit of making up long sets [i.e. as this set here offered], including the illuminated plates, generally bound in 28 volumes, in olive morocco, gilt edges, for £105 or more. Thus this is the set exactly as described by Lowndes, consisting of: Holinshed (6 vols.), Hall (1 vol.), Grafton (2 vols.), Hardyng (1 vol.), Fabyan (1 vol.), William of Malmesbury (1 vol.), Fuller's Worthies (2 vols.), Arnold and Rastell together (1 vol.), Robert of Gloucester (2 vols.), Peter Langtoft (2 vols.), Joinville (1 vol.), Froissart (4 vols., illuminated), and Monstrelet (4 vols. illuminated). The olive bindings are probably Charles Lewis; the red bindings are signed by Wright. In 30 years of collecting antiquarianism I have never seen a complete set such as this. Amsterdam, Pierre de Coup, 1724. First edition of one of the most influential translations of Grotius’s De iure belli ac pacis. Barbeyrac, its editor and translator, had already published an edition in the original Latin: ‘for many eighteenth-century readers the definitive version of the book had appeared in 1720, when Jean Barbeyrac issued a new edition, followed by a French translation in 1724 with elaborate notes. Barbeyrac was a leading figure in the French Protestant diaspora, the network of scholars whose families had been driven out of France following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by Louis XIV in 1685. He worked tirelessly to put his own version of modern natural law before the European public, and his editions of Grotius built on the success of a similarly elaborate edition of Samuel Pufendorf’s De iure naturae et gentium in 1706. The notes to these editions keyed their texts into all the relevant discussions of natural law from antiquity down to the 1720s, and the two works together quickly became the equivalent of an encyclopedia of moral and political thought for Enlightenment Europe. The French version of De iure belli ac pacis was reprinted steadily through the middle years of the century, and it found an audience beyond the French-speaking polite world in an English translation of 1738’ (Tuck, ed., Rights of war I pp. x–xi).Meulen & Diermanse 654.

First edition and a nice copy of the second volume of Leupold!s Theatrum Machinarum, or !Theater of Machines!; this was the most complete and richly illustrated work on engineering and machinery published, not just up until that time, but for many years to follow. Complete sets of the nine works are of great rarity. The Theatrum Machinarum may be described as the first encyclopedia of technology. Not only was it easily the most richly illustrated book of its kind, with many thousands of figures on 530 plates, but with more than 2000 pages of German text it eclipsed all other works in the field. It describes not only the design and construction of the machines themselves, but also the mechanical principles by which they operated. The author describe the machines of his predecessors Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Strada, Zonca, Bockler, and Zeising and also gives accounts of many of his own inventions. This volume deals with marine engineering, including the construction of piers, docks, sluices, and wharves, embanking, draining, etc. It was the most complete work on the subject in its time. The fine plates illustrate methods of boring for water, raising it, conveying it, the design of interlocking or sheet-piles, their use in the construction of coffer-dams, driving piles, and bridging waterways. Leupold (1674-1727), a Leipzig mechanical engineer, established a workshop to manufacture mathematical and mechanical instruments. His numerous books describe the latest technological developments of the day. A very fine and tall copy. .

Ende Februar 1696 heimlich die Abtei und versteckte sich in Paris im Haus eines protestantischen Freundes namens Groddek. Anfang Mai 1696 begab sich V. nach Basel. In der Folgezeit kam er nach Deutschland, wo er eine Ehe eingegangen und zur protestantischen Kirche übergetreten ist. Er ist in Berlin gestorben, als Bibliothekar des preuß. Königs. (BBKL, XII, Sp. 1314f.)
