Copper-engraved maps, with period outline colour. Good condition but just shaved into plate area at upper and lower margins. 19 3/4 x 24 1/2 inches. A pair of hemispherical maps of the World, by De l'Isle. Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was the son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who, among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. These maps exemplify the characteristics which led to De l'Isle achieving his reputation as the outstanding cartographer of his age. He was very exacting about geographical information, and what wasn't known, for example the northwestern coast of North America, he left blank. He avoided to a remarkable extent common mistakes passed on from mapmaker to mapmaker, including the widely believed notion that California was an island. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive.

[PREVOST (Abbe)]
Quelques mouillures."""

STEELE, Richard.
THE CONSCIOUS LOVERS. Gli amanti interni, commedia Inglese del Cavaliere Riccardo Steele.
Londra, 1724. 12mo, pp. [xii], 166; pagination including engraved frontispiece; internally a good copy; contemporary English calf, spine gilt, very rubbed. An Italian translation of Steele's play The Conscious Lovers, by the Italian writer Paolo Rolli who seems to have been in London for at least some of the 1720s. Many of his books were published by John Pickard ('Giovanni Pickard') who evidently specialised in Italian books, and this - though without imprint - must surely also be one of his productions.

Lima Francisco sobrino, Impressor del Santo Oficio de la Inquisición 1724 4to 37 pp Wrappers Good copy Chile: Rebellion of the Mapuche Indians, 1724- Lima imprint" - Folio; remains of old stamps; preserved in custom folder. INTERESTING AND RARE LIMA IMPRINT REGARDING A BLOODY REVOLT OF THE MAPUCHE INDIANS IN CHILE. The author, a native of Lima, was the Bishop of Santiago de Chile in 1718, a post he held until 1723. He writes this pastoral letter on the occasion of the general uprising of the Indians of that province known as the Mapuche Rebellion of 1723. This Pastoral Letter was dedicated to the Catholic forces in circumstances in which they were going to begin an expedition to the region of the Biobio River to put down the revolt; relations between the Spanish and the Mapuches in the frontier region were always complicated. There were times of conflict that were followed by others of peace and commerce between both sides. The murder of two Spanish soldiers by the Indians was the motive for the declaration of war; the Indians, fearful of punishment, arose en masse. The Lafquenche and Cunco Indians became involved in the movement. Finally a conference was held in Negrete in which both parties signed a peace treaty and established a system of regulated fairs. We do not find copies of this very rare original edition in OCLC, only 2 copies on microfilm.

With engraved frontispiece, folding portrait of Valentijn, 20 portraits of the Governors-General, 32 maps (many double-page or folding), 76 engraved illustrations in the text and 209 plates and plans (many folding or double-page).*Original edition. - One of the most extensive works on the history of the Far East (including Persia), which never can be superseded as many of the documents of which the author made use, do not longer exist. François Valentijn (1666-1727) was a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church who lived for many years on Amboyna and Java. During this period he collected an enormous mass of information, especially in the fields of history, geography and ethnology, concerning all parts of the world where the VOC was active: Indonesia, with large parts on Batavia and the Moluccas, Persia, Malacca, Ceylon, India, Cape of Good Hope, Japan, China and Formosa, etc.). The work is profusely illustrated with 338 fine engraved maps, plans, portraits and spectacular views. They are engraved by the best artists of the time like F. Ottens, J.C. Philips, G. Schouten, J. Goeree etc. mostly after designs by M. Balen. Apart from the fine engravings the work is of particular interest for its cartography. It contains interesting maps of Australia, probably drawn after manuscript maps now lost. For his descriptions of the natural history of Amboyna Valentijn used i.a. the unpublished 'Amboinsch Dierboek' by the famous naturalist Rumphius, of which the original manuscript has been lost.
