Lebanese Place-Names (Mount Lebanon and North Lebanon) A Typology of Regional Variation and Continuity (Orientalia Lovaniensia Analecta)
|
Peeters Publishers. Hardcover. 9042912480 The present volume covers some 1724 Lebanese place-names in the districts of Mount Lebanon and North Lebanon. The aim has been to: a) establish a database of place-names based on fieldwork; b) present the etymologies of these names based on the latest findings in Semitic lexicography, onomastics and dialectology; and c) plot the results across the Lebanese territory. analysis of the place-names, focusing on language, geography and society, tends to confirm that language and religion shifts in Lebanon were gradual. Nearly 49 are Phoenician. The traditional dividing lines between religious groups are only slightly reflected in place-names. These groups seem to have had a similar sociocultural development. The landscape holds a central position in Lebanese place-names. Water, human occupation, religion and the family also hold a prominent position (Peeters 2002). 9789042912489. Hardback . London: Thomas Ward / Joseph Downing and Henry Woodfall, 1724 - BISHOP BURNET'S HISTORY OF HIS OWN TIME. Two volumes. and 1734. Foli Contemporary calf. (xvi), 836, (20); (xxii), 765 pages. First editions. Bishop Burnet was a staunch high churchman and a close friend of William and Mary around the time of the Glorious Revolution. Although partisan in his presentation, it is still a valuable contemporary account of this period in English history, and it was highly popular in early Virginia. In fact, John Carter, Secretary of the colony, and owner of Shirley Plantation was one of the original subscribers. Other Virginia related subscribers were two later royal governors of the colony - Robert Dinwiddie a Francis Fauquier. Among the major libraries in Virginia to own it were those William Byrd of Westover, John Mercer of Marlborough, Robert Carter of Nomini Hall, and in Thomas Jefferson's great library that he sold to the Library of Congress in 1815. Eighteenth-century engraved armorial bookplate of "The Rt. Honble. Frans. Ld. Brooke" on inside of front board of first volume. The set has been sympathetically respined using the original spines an overlays and t bindings are lightly worn, else a very good set of the first edition of this major work. ALEXANDER ab ALEXANDRO (1461-1523)
Genialium Dierum Libri Sex. Illustrati & Locupletati, semestribus eruditissimis, & plane iucundis Andreae Tiraquelli (i.e. Tiraqueau) in curia olim Parisiensi senatoris amplissimi....
|
Frankfurt : Ex Officina Typographica Nicolai Bassaei 1594 Folio, [12], 1011 (misnumbered 10011), [81] pp, title in red and black, some browning, engraved armorial bookplate of George Baillie dated 1724 on front pastedown and his signature on title-page, contemporary full calf, initials "M.I.R" in blind on each cover, spine rubbed, upper joint partly split, otherwise a sound copy. The author was an Italian jurist, born at Naples. He studied and later practised in both Nables and Rome but finally quit the bar in disgust at the corruption. A sinecure appointment obtained through the pope enabled him to devote himself to literary pursuits. "His work, Dies Geniales, was constructed after the model of the Noctes Atticae of Aulus Gellius, and the Saturnalia of Macrobius. It consists of a confused mass of heterogeneous materials relating to philology, antiquities, law, dreams, spectres, &c., and is characterized by considerable credulity" - Ency. Brit. 11th.The editor, Andre Tiraqueau, born in Fontenoy-le-Comte about 1480, is best known for his sympathy for Rabalais. As a judge he ordered his release from the prison where he had been thrown by the monks.

LEUPOLD, Jacob.
Theatrum Machinarum Hydrotechnicarum. Schau-Platz der Wasser-Bau-Kunst
|
- 51 folding engraved plates. Title in red & black. 6 p.l., 184, [4] pp. Folio, cont. speckled boards (some browning as is usual). Leipzig: published by the Author & J.F. Gleditsch & Son, 1724. First edition and a nice copy of the second volume of Leupolds Theatrum Machinarum, or "Theater of Machines"; this was the most complete and richly illustrated work on engineering and machinery published, not just up until that time, but for many years to follow. Complete sets of the nine works are of great rarity. The Theatrum Machinarum may be described as the first encyclopedia of technology. Not only was it easily the most richly illustrated book of its kind, with many thousands of figures on 530 plates, but with more than 2000 pages of German text it eclipsed all other works in the field. It describes not only the design and construction of the machines themselves, but also the mechanical principles by which they operated. The author describe the machines of his predecessors Francesco di Giorgio Martini, Strada, Zonca, Böckler, and Zeising and also gives accounts of many of his own inventions. This volume deals with marine engineering, including the construction of piers, docks, sluices, and wharves, embanking, draining, etc. It was the most complete work on the subject in its time. The fine plates illustrate methods of boring for water, raising it, conveying it, the design of interlocking or sheet-piles, their use in the construction of coffer-dams, driving piles, and bridging waterways. Leupold (1674-1727), a Leipzig mechanical engineer, established a workshop to manufacture mathematical and mechanical instruments. His numerous books describe the latest technological developments of the day. A very fine and tall copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

RACINE, Jean;

(J. Maß / S. A Tour Thro' the whole Island of Great Britain, Divided into Circuits or Journies.
|
London: printed, and sold by G. Strahan; W. Mears; R. Francklin; S. Chapman; R. Stagg; and J. Graves, Giving A Particular and Diverting Account of Whatever is Curious and worth Observation … With Useful Observations upon the Whole. Particularly fitted for the Reading of such as desire to Travel over the Island. By a Gentleman. 3 volumes, octavo (195 × 118 mm). Contemporary trade binding of panelled calf, red morocco labels, plain spines numbered in gilt, skilfully rebacked with original spines laid down. 3 folding engraved maps. Bookplates of H. C. Drayton. Rubbed, one or two short tears not affecting printed area, a trace of marginal worm at beginning of vol. I, an excellent set. First edition. Defoe's Tour is the first and best known of a series of respected books written by him on broadly economic subjects. A Tour has been lauded by the most eminent historians as a prime source of understanding for Britain, both in the 18th century and in the birth of the modern on a global scale (Pat Rogers, The text of Great Britain, Newark, 1998, p. 11). Defoe was simultaneously alive to history, to commercial produce and possibilities, and to the new tourist industry. The result was that he was the first to compose a book equally useful for those who wanted to view historical antiquities, to tour stately homes, to study agricultural and estate improvements, and to take a picturesque tour (in Rogers's words, 'a kind of aesthetic adventure' for persons of sensibility; Rogers, 40) (ODNB). Defoe characterized the English people, identified their strengths and advantages, and charted their course to greatness, believing that trade, not military might, would lead to world domination. Furbank & Owens 220, 223 & 230; Goldsmiths' 6261; Kress 3543; Moore 459-61.

MONTAIGNE
Essais de Michel Seigneur de Montaigne
|
1724. MONTAIGNE. Les Essais de Michel Seigneur de Montaigne. Nouvelle Edition! par Pierre Coste. London: J. Tonson & J. Watts, 1724. Three volumes. Quarto, 20th-century half black morocco. $1600. First edition of Montaigne's essays edited by Pierre Coste, based on the posthumously published 1595 edition edited by the author shortly before his death, with engraved frontispiece portrait in Volume I, engraved ornamental letters, headpieces and tailpieces. To Virginia Woolf, Montaigne was forever the "great master of the art of life," a writer who surpassed Pepys and Rousseau in perfecting the essay, a form he himself named. "This art of talking of oneself," she wrote, "this art belonged to one man only: to Montaigne" (The Common Reader). Harold Bloom noted that Montaigne "represents!not everyman! but very nearly every man who has the desire, ability, and opportunity to think and to read" (The Western Canon, 151). "Montaigne devised the essay from in which to express his personal convictions and private meditations, a form in which he can hardly be said to have been anticipated! He finds a place in the present canon, however, chiefly for his consummate representation of the enlightened skepticism of the 16th century, to which Bacon, Decartes and Newton were to provide the answers in the next" (PMM 95). Montaigne continually revised these essays, even after their initial publication in 1580, and was working on further changes shortly before his death in 1592. The first edition based on his handwritten annotations was published by L'Angelier in 1595 and became the basis for this edition by Pierre Coste, a close friend of Locke and his principle translator. With the restoration of several passages omitted by that 1595 publication, and seven letters by Montaigne, this has been called "one of the most beautiful and best editions of Montaigne" (Tchemerzine IV, 909). Text in French. Light scattered foxing. Cloth on front board of Volume III renewed. A near-fine set.

"LEGRAND, Marc-Antoine;"

- Third edition of the famous work. Bound in modern boards. - Condition: Slightly browned throughout, first 2 leaves somewhat stained, cancelled names on title. - Pappe

VEUE DU PONT DE RIALTO DE VENISE 1724 AMSTERDAM
|
