Opera Varia
|
Lugduni Batavorum: : Janssonios Vander Aa, 1724. . Four books in one volume. 4to. (246 x 193 mm) [18], (1-4), 5-776, [18] pp. Engraved frontis-portrait (by Ottens), 56 folding plates. Contemporary full calf, raised bands, gilt-stamped spine panels, gilt-stamped red morocco spine label; covers and joints rubbed, hinges beginning to split. Bookplate of Andras Gedeon and P.A. Moiroud (on title-page), !Dortous de Mairan, 1724! on title-page, J. B. de Bouvou (signature on title, dated 1758). Very good. . FIRST COLLECTED EDITION of Huygen!s works, edited by G. J. !sGravesande, consisting of: Horologium oscillatorium (first published 1673), treatises on geometry, astronomical observations, including Kosmotheoros (first published posthumously in 1698), and Opera miscellanea (which includes a treatise on the game of dice, the theory of music, and problems in optics). !His magnum opus, Horologium oscillatorium, stands as a solid symbol of the force of the mathematical approach and was recognized as such by Huygens! contemporaries. Compared to the relatively simple mathematical tools which Galileo used in his works, the wealth of mathematical theories and methods that Huygens was able to apply is significant, and herein lies the direct and lasting influence of his work.! [DSB]. Provenance: Jean Jacques d!Ortous de Mairan (1678-1771), signature on title-page (dated 1724), his heraldic lion on spine and !Mairan! lettered in gilt-at bottom of spine. De Mairan attended college at Toulouse, with main interest in ancient Greek language. He went to Paris in 1698 to study physics and math, under the direction of Malebranche (1638-1715), among others. From 1704 to 1718 he lived in Beziers. In 1718, he was made a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences as Associate in the department of Geometry. In 1740 he became Associate Secretary of the academy, and was elected to the Academy francaise in 1743. Soon after, he was appointed as associate editor of a famous scientific periodical, the Journal des Scavans. He was also a member of the academies in London, Edinburgh, Uppsala and St. Petersburg. De Mairan!s scientific work includes contributions to the theory of heat, observations of meteorological phenomena, and theoretical work on the orbital motion and rotation of the Moon. He mentioned his notion of a small nebulosity around a star closely north of the Orion Nebula in or before 1731, mentioned in his best known work, Traite physique and historique de l!Aurore Boreale (Physical and Historic Tract of the Aurora Borealis), published 1733 in Paris and reprinted in the Journal des Scavans in 1754. This nebula was later cataloged as !M43! by Charles Messier. He is honored by naming a Moon Crater after him: Mairan (41.6N, 43.4W, 40.0 km diameter, named 1935). Sol!s, Antonio de
The history of the conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards. Done into English...by Thomas Townsend
|
London:: Pr. for T. Woodward, & J. Hooke,, 1724.. Recent quarter calf, antique style: Round spine with raised bands accented with gilt rules and beading; gilt center devices; marbled paper sides. Ex-library copy with stamps. First few leaves crumpled in lower margins; last dozen leaves foxed, sometimes heavily. Lacks all plates and maps except one map - yet pleasing to the reader.. Tall folio. [9] ff., 163, [1 (blank)], 252, 152 pp. . Many editions of Sol!s's eminently readable history have come down the pike since the first appeared in Madrid in 1684. The present one is the first edition in English. Sol!s was an official court historian and as such had access not only to published sources but also to archival sources not previously used. Despite writing while the Baroque era flourished in Spain, his prose is remarkably unornamented or convoluted. This clarity of style when combined with the stirring and near-mythic events of the conquest of Mexico has accounted for the hundreds of editions that have come down to us.

H Moll, T Bowles, C Rivington and J Bowles, London 1724 - A relatively scarce Moll atlas, which appears infrequently at auction (only 5 times in the last 35 years on ABPC). Complete with 48 county maps plus two folding general maps. Bound in contemporary panelled dark brown calf. Some marginal wear and scuffs to boards. Couple of small areas of surface loss due to slight worming. Rebacked some while ago with raised bands and gilt fleurons to spine compartments. Gilt spine titles on a brown morocco spine label. Minor superficial worming to centre of top compartment. Corners a little bumped. Bookplate of Lord St. Helens to front pastedown. Maps generally very tidy and intact with no staining or foxing. Folding map of Britain with some minor nicks and miscreasing to fore edge and minor short closed tear near gutter. Map of Cornwal (sic) with some candle wax spots to verso leaving some show through. Contemporary ink notes to verso of a few maps. Map of Derbyshire detached and a little scuffed and soiled round the margin with one closed tear of 3 inches into image and a couple of minor marginal closed tears (all silked to verso). Otherwise maps very tidy. Early ink name to margin of page 287 and page 295 partially excised with no loss to the leaf. Wormtrack to top margin of last few text leaves, affecting text slightly, and just noticeable on a couple of maps. Title page with minor loss to top margin at corner. Inscribed 'Hill Boothby June 4th 1736' to top margin first page of text. Folding map, frontispiece, title page, xi, (1), 343, x pages plus 49 further maps. Collates complete. Overall a pretty sound example of this rare Moll atlas with two maps with a little minor damage, but otherwise very tidy. We can send images of this book on request.
