(Chronicles, English)
A complete set of all the English Chronicles, as listed below
|
London: various publishers, 1724!1815. 28 vols., large 4to, 24 vols. in full olive morocco, gilt-panelled backstrips, raised bands, red labels, gilt edges, 4 vols. in full red morocco to match. A very fine set, with all the de luxe illuminated plates not found in most copies, of great rarity thus. See Lowndes II, 1086-87: Othe Quarto Series of Chronicles, published by the London trade, mostly from the old folios, under the editorial superintendence of Sir Henry Ellis, E.V. Utterson, R.H. Evans, F. Douce, [T.F.] Dibdin, and others.O Lowndes continues that the series Owas completed in 15 vols. of Chronicles, and 2 of FullerOs Worthies, making in all 17 vols. . . . To these many more volumes are sometimes added, to make a long series of Chronicles . . . the Froissart and Monstrelet, by Col. Johnes, sometimes occur with illuminated plates and in this state are scarce and expensive, but are necessary in a first-class set. The publisher has been in the habit of making up long sets [i.e. as this set here offered], including the illuminated plates, generally bound in 28 volumes, in olive morocco, gilt edges, for !105 or more. . . .O Thus this is the set exactly as described by Lowndes, consisting of: Holinshed (6 vols.), Hall (1 vol.), Grafton (2 vols.), Hardyng (1 vol.), Fabyan (1 vol.), William of Malmesbury (1 vol.), FullerOs Worthies (2 vols.), Arnold and Rastell together (1 vol.), Robert of Gloucester (2 vols.), Peter Langtoft (2 vols.), Joinville (1 vol.), Froissart (4 vols., illuminated), and Monstrelet (4 vols. illuminated). The olive bindings are probably Charles Lewis; the red bindings are signed by Wright. In 30 years of collecting antiquarianism I have never seen a complete set such as this.

MAUBRAY, John.
The female physician, containing all the diseases incident to that sex, in virgins, wives, and widows; together with their causes and symptoms, their degrees of danger, and respective methods of preservation and cure: to which is added, the whole art of new improv'd midwifery; comprehending the necessary qualifications of a midwife, and particular directions for laying women, in all cases of difficult and preternatural births; together with the diet and regimen of both the mother and child.
|
London: printed for James Holland, 1724 - 8vo, xxiv, 420, (4) pp., attractively rebound in contemporary-style calf-backed boards. First edition. Maubray gave lectures in midwifery. He was of the opinion that, unlike the physicians of ancient Greece, his contemporaries "study their own good, and take more care of themselves than of women." Aside from the anatomical and physiological aspects of pregnancy and birth, Maubray covers such topics as the soul and its faculties, the state of virginity, love and copulation, as well as the raising of infants and the diseases of children, false pregnancies, moles, monsters, and the psychological problems of widowhood. Maubray was one of the first to suggest the establishment of a lying-in hospital; he wrote that there were many excellent hospitals but "on this point of provision for poor miserable women in the time of their affliction, when they are in no case in a condition to help themselves we have been hitherto and are still deficient." Maubray published his course on midwifery from his house in New Bond Street; he gave about twenty lectures between the hours of five and six twice a week; students engaged in practical work with patients, which allowed them to perform vaginal examinations (the touch) and conduct deliveries. He was unusual in opposing the use of obstetric forceps. NLM, p. 292. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Den Haag, Pierre Gosse und Pierre de Hondt, 1724.. . Gutes Exemplar. - Cioranescu 40139 (Levesque). Barbier II 706.

It is his best known work and the most considerable contribution to the exegesis of Isaiah of that time. Each volume with an 1835 presentation inscription from Sir George William Craufurd (1797-1881), lecturer in divinity at King's College Cambridge, to Kenyon College in Ohio, and a letterpress bookplate of the library of the associated Theological Seminary of the Diocese of Ohio. With the paper very slightly browned and some marginal waterstains, occasionally just reaching the text, but otherwise a very good copy and with generous margins. Binding good, with some cracks in one hinge. First edition of Vitringa's extensive commentary on Isaiah, with a map.
