Macintosh, William
Treatise Concerning the Manner of Fallowing of Ground, Raising of Grass-Seeds, and Training of Lint and Hemp, for the Increase and Improvement of the Linnen Manufactories in Scotland. Published for the Benefit of the Farmers in that Kingdom, by the Honour
|
London: The Society for Improving in the Knowledge of Agriculture; Edinburgh / Printed by Robert Fleming and Company, 1724 Good. Contemporary full calf with blind stamped decorative border tooling to boards and five raised bands to spine. Front free endpaper missing. Small neat prev` owner name to front pastedown and title page corners, a little quill testing has gone on on the rear flyleaf and free endpaper, also there are a few lines of notes to a blank recto after the last fold-out plate. The odd spot of pallid foxing. 173pp. 12mo. Published to encourage the improvement of Scotland`s agriculture and to promote the linen and hemp industries. The first three chapters expound the virtues of English agricultural methods, including dairy farming; chapters 4 and 5 are on growing flax and hemp for textiles; chapters 6 and 7 are on spinning and weaving these fibres; chapter 8 on bleaching; and an appendix prints the texts of various laws concerning linen manufacture, planting, and ferries, bridges and highways. Halkett and Laing attributed the book to the Jacobite leader William Mackintosh of Borlum, under whose name it is still often catalogued, although it now generally thought that Robert Maxwell (1695-1765), Secretary of the Society of Improvers in the Knowledge of Agriculture, under whose auspices the book was published, was largely responsible for writing it. Chapters 5-8 reprint Louis Crommelin`s Essay towards the improvement of the hempen and flaxen manufactures in the Kingdom of Ireland (Dublin, 1705), who is identified as `the Founder of the Linen-Manufactory in Ireland, about the Year 1700`. The plates are especially interesting, and lacking from a number of copies (presumably a remainder issue was put out without plates). They show the details of `A French Loom`; `A Loom call`d Estille`; a `Dutch Loom`; and `The Tools for a Flax Dresser`. Several views of the looms are shown, and the parts described in detail in the letterpress on the facing pages. ESTC shows that this work is fairly widely held in libraries, though many copies lack the plates. However Crommelin`s work is very rare, with copies of the first edition only at Folger and Huntington outside Ireland and the UK; selections were printed at Glasgow in 1725 (NLS only) and there was a Dublin reprint in 1734 (Columbia and Huntington only outside Ireland and the UK). `In the eighteenth century a number of works on flax and hemp were published in Scotland, one of the earliest of these being A treatise concerning the manner of fallowing ground, raising of grass-seeds and training of lint and hemp. This was published in Edinburgh in 1724 by the Society of Improvers in the Knowledge of Agriculture. This Society had been established in June of the previous year. It worked for practical reforms in Scottish agriculture by making known and encouraging new ideas in husbandry, and by giving advice to members on improving their lands. Its first President was Thomas Hope of Rankeillour, or Rankeillor, who had travelled widely and had studied farming methods in England, France, Flanders, Holland, and other countries.` Henrey. Literature: A.J. Durie, The Scottish Linen Industry in the 18th Century (1979) pp. 14-16; Blanche Henrey, British Botanical and Horticultural Literature before 1800 (3 vols, 1975), II, pp. 603-605. Containing 7 fold-out illustrations depicting related tools and machinery. FOR COMPREHENSIVE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THIS BOOK PLEASE SEE OUR WEBSITE.. First Edition. First Impression. Full-Calf. He escaped but was recaptured and banished.

VERTUE, George.
A Plan of the Great Oke call’d the Green-Dale Oke in the Lane near Welbeck in Nottingham Shire. These Draughts taken 31 August 1727.
|
First edition of Vertue’s delightful and rare plates recording the result of a high-spirited wager between Vertue’s patron Edward Harley, 2nd Earl of Oxford and the Duke of Portland in 1724. Oxford bet his dinner companion that he had a tree on his estate with a trunk wide enough to drive a coach and six through. Portland accepted the bet, and a steward was duly instructed to cut such an opening overnight into the Greendale Oak in Welbeck Park, Nottinghamshire. Welbeck had always been famous for its tremendous oaks, and furnished timber used in the building of St. Paul’s Cathedral and York Minster. The next morning Lord Oxford drove a coach and six through the Greendale Oak. In 1727 Lady Oxford had a cabinet made from the oak taken from the heart of the tree, which had inlaid illustrations of the Greendale Oak and its tunnel. The cabinet also displayed a quote from Ovid, and a quote from Chaucer, which Vertue reproduced on his plates no. II and no. IV respectively. The mutilated Greendale Oak survived until well into the 20th century and was thought to have been older than a thousand years.Vertue’s plates show the tree from three sides with a lone rider and a coach driving through. The first plate shows a cross section of the tree trunk recording the height of the tunnel at more than 10 feet, the width at 6 feet and the length at 12 feet. The first plate also incorporates the title lettering, Vertue’s initials, Lord Oxford’s coat-of-arms, and a map of the location.David Alexander, George Vertue as an engraver, no. 656-60 (curiously dates the set of plates as from ‘1733’, no explanation given why this should be; we would date it nearer ‘1727’ when the cabinet was made), in Walpole Society, vol. 70, 2008; COPAC record only the British Library copy. Folio, 5 engraved plates by and after Vertue (numbered I-V), measuring 355 x 210 mm, four of which are on a full sheet, while the last is on a smaller sheet, inlaid to fit the size of the other sheets (490 x 325 mm); two with a little dust spotting in the margins, but very good impressions; bound by Birdsall & Sohn, Northampton, c. 1900, in dark green half morocco and marbled side, gilt lettered spine. Bookplates of James Ward (dated 1892); and bookplate of William Allen Potter.

The religion of nature delineated
|
London reprinted, 1724. Second edition, 4to, pp. 218; woodcut vignette on title showing a printer in a tri-cornered hat at work at a press, 5 woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials; neat early 2" tape repair in blank gutter margin of title, else good and sound in full contemporary paneled calf perfunctorily rebacked. Benjamin Franklin worked as typesetting for the third edition of this book (1725) which inspired his own "little metaphysical piece," A Dissertation on Liberty and Necessity, London, 1725. It has always been tempting, however unlikely, to ascribe the errata on the last page in this second edition to Franklin: "These [errata] are such as were collected in haste, but there are more; primarily in respect of Greek and Hebrew letters, accents, points, &c. and perhaps things of greater importance: tho it is hoped only such as a reader may easily correct or will readily forgive.

SACCHETTI FRANCO
DELLE NOVELLE. IN FIRENZE, S.N., 1724
|

? Papierbedingt etwas gebräunt, Band 2 anfangs stärker. Gutes Exemplar. ? Cioranescu 40139 (Lévesque). Barbier II 706.

CONFUCIUS.
The Morals of Confucius A Chinese Philosopher, Who flourished above Five hundred Years before the Coming of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Being one of the Choicest Pieces of Learning Remaining of that Nation. The Second Edition.
|
Small 8vo, 152 x 93 mms., pp. [xvi], 136, contemporary sheepskin; small portion missing from lower part of last blank leaf, with partial loss of some contemporary annotations, covers detached, spine worn. A later owner has mounted a nameless bookplate (?Howard of Essingham; with motto "virtus mille scuta" above two heraldic lions), on the front paste-down end-paper, covering up contemporary annotations. The 20th century bookplate of the bookseller John Lawson is also present on the front paste-down end-paper. ESTC notes that this work is "translated and abridged from the Latin translation of Prospero Intorcetta, Philippe Couplet, and others, or from an intervening French translation attributed to Louis Cousin or Jean de La Brune." This copy, which is extensively annotated in a contemporary hand, makes a similar comment on the title-page, noting also that it is "Badly translated" and that it is just a selection from Confucius. In his or her account of the Jesuit origins of the work, the annotator traces its Jesuit origins: "The Jesuits seem to have try'd which c'd lye most in extolling the Chinese." The notes in the text are mostly confined to the first 60 pages, but the rear end-papers are covered with notes, and a folded leaf is loosely inserted between the rear free end-paper and the rear paste-down end-paper, with quotations from various contemporary or earlier authors. Loosely inserted in the same hand is a curious note, 95 x 111 mms., with the designation, "The Real Order of the Ranks of Men," beginning with those who practice Divinity in the top rank, followed by (in rank order), Law, Physick, Mathematicks, Trades, Military, and "The Lowest of all, Sports, Operas, Plays, Races, Boxing, Wrestling, Fencing, Bowls, Dice, Tennis, Cricket, Prisoners [just below Cricket], Riding, Dancing," etc. The annotations would seem to derive from a contemporary Sinologist and would be invaluable for assessing perceptions of Confucius by early 18th century scholars. The work was first published in 1691, followed by a second edition in 1706; this second "second edition" is a re-issue of the 1706 edition (printed for T. Horne), with a cancel title-page, ESTC T140229.
