The Arabian Nights in Historical Context: Between East and West
|
OUP Oxford - Alf layla wa layla (known in English as A Thousand and One Nights or The Arabian Nights) changed the world on a scale unrivalled by any other literary text. Inspired by a fourteenth-century Syrian manuscript, the appearance of Antoine Galland's twelve-volume Mille et Une Nuits in English translation (1704-1717), closely followed by the Grub Street English edition, drew the text into European circulation. Over the following three hundred years, a widely heterogeneous series of editions, compilations, translations, and variations circled the globe to reveal the absorption of The Arabian Nights into English, Continental, and global literatures, and its transformative return to modern Arabic.

Ware, James
The antiquities and history of Ireland.
|
Awnsham & John Churchill and Jonathan Robinson 1704-05, London - First English edition of Sir James Ware's landmark compendium of Irish history, originally published in Latin in 1654 as De Hibernia antiquitatibus ejus disquisitiones. Often compared to the great English historian William Camden, the Irish-born Ware produced what was then the most inclusive and authoritative work to date on the origins of Ireland and her people. The DNB says that, "With its copious detail and trustworthy description of the antiquities and traditions of Ireland, De Hibernia finally brought the country out of the shadow of Britain and characterized it fully to a scholarly European audience." The main title-page bears a London imprint, but - as is seen in a large number of reported copies - the separate sectional title-pages give Dublin, printed by Andrew Crook, some dated 1704 and some 1705. The pagination and signatures are wildly erratic, but the text is complete; the volume is illustrated with four plates (including depictions of armory, coins, harps, and other antiquities) and a map of Hibernia. A handwritten copy of the 1553 prophecy (in French) of George Vousuel, Archbishop of Dublin, is laid into the volume. Folio (31.7 cm, 12.4"). [18], 172 (i.e., 178), [14], 76 (i.e., 80), 164, 64, 175-196, [4], 70, 44, 55 (i.e., 57), [1], 28, [4], 42 (i.e., 46), [4], 59, [1] pp. (pagination erratic); 4 plts., 1 map. ESTC T142075; Lowndes 2842. On Ware, see: Oxford Dictionary of National Biography online. Recent half calf and marbled paper-covered sides, leather edges tooled in blind, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label, gilt-dotted raised bands, and gilt-stamped decorations in compartments. Title-page, browned, with inked gift inscription in upper margin, dated 1835. Lower (closed) edges, title-page, and several other pages institutionally rubber-stamped. Plate leaves and some others browned, with most pages age-toned or foxed but paper not brittle; smudges to edges of endpapers and some other leaves; last few leaves with page edges delicately nibbled! Occasional early inked and pencilled marginalia. => A sound, enjoyable copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

ATWOOD, William
Superiority and Direct Dominion of the Imperial Crown of England
|
[ATWOOD, William]. The Superiority and Direct Dominion of the Imperial Crown of England over the Crown and Kingdom of Scotland, and the Divine Right of Succession to Both Crowns Inseparable from the Civil, Asserted. London: J. Hartley, 1704. Thick octavo, contemporary full speckled brown calf rebacked with original elaborately gilt-decorated spine laid down, raised bands. $1600. First edition of this case for English crown rule over Scotland, advancing political theories "grounded upon a considerable knowledge of early charters and other documents," in response to the ideas of royal succession presented by Sir Thomas Craig a century earlier. Atwood's answer to Sir Thomas Craig's Right of James VI to the Succession to the English Crown, published in Latin in 1603 and translated for the first time into English in 1703, thereby reopening the century-old debate. Atwood "endeavored to prove that the Kings of Scotland had done homage and paid fealty for their kingdom to the Kings of England as lords paramount" (Allibone I, 81). His "proof" of British dominance over Scotland was of course tacitly accepted in England, but "excited great indignation in Scotland, and was ordered by the Scotch parliament to be burnt by the common hangman" (DNB). Lowndes, 85. Corner crease to first few gatherings, only occasional light scattered foxing. Moderate age-wear to board edges. A near-fine copy.

PIERRE MORTIER 1661-1711
PORTO LONGONE 1704 AMSTERDAM
|

Adimari ... Scherz-Sonnette oder Kling-Gedichte", "Anemonis und Adonis Blumen", "Glückwünschungen" (mit Leichen-Gedichte, Ehren-Gedichte, Vermischte Gedichte) und "Himmel-Schlüssel". - Exlibris. Aus der Bibliothek Aug. Heinrich Hoffmann v. Fallersleben (Stempel auf der Titelrückseite) und Friedrich Wilh. Pfeiffer, Breslau (mehrere kl. Stempel). Gutes Exemplar. - Dünnhaupt 6. Goed. III 271, 4, 2. Faber du Faur 1637. Jantz 342. Kroker I 6. Hayn/G. I 15.

Josephus, a Jewish priest and Pharisee, opposed the revolt against Rome, but accepted the government of the two Galilees, and in 67 A.D. defended the city of Jotapata against the powerful Roman army under Vespasian. The only survivor, his life was spared because of his prediction that Vespasian would become Emperor. Included here are his history of the Jews from creation to the outbreak of the war with Rome in 66 A.D., his chronicle of the Jewish war from the capture of Jerusalem by Antiochus Epiphanes to 73 A.D., his two books written against Apion, &c. In point of literary talent Josephus ranks among the leading writers in world literature. His style is epic, his portrayals plastic, his gift of description captivates the reader alike by its fidelity and its colorful presentation" (Encyc. Judaica). Graesse III 482. PIERRE MORTIER 1661-1711
SPALATO VILLE DES VENETIENS 1704 AMSTERDAM
|
Bibliografia: Cremonini pp. 83-90. 540 450

[Amsterdam: P. Mortier, 1704]. ¶ Eighteenth-century copper engraved plate, illustrated surface measuring 32 by 41 cm. (each scene measures 16 by 20 cm). Mild embrowning and rumpling at blank edges, else fine. Professionally presented in hinged archival mat with mylar guard, suitable for framing. ¶ From one of the finest series of 18th-century biblical illustrations, by Amsterdam born artist, engraver and poet Jan Luyken (1649-1712). The present plate was produced for a Dutch edition of Josephus’ Works (P. Mortier, 1704); it was reissued by Covens & Mortier in 1729, and appeared in F. Houttuyn’s new edition in 1747. Little is known about Luyken who apprenticed for the painter Martinus Saeghmolen; he appears to have abandoned his early libertine ways and former associates after a religious conversion at the age of 26. Distinguished by their clarity and detail, Luyken’s works were quite popular in the period after Rembrandt. Digital image available upon request.

Several of the plates apparently were "short" pages and have half an inch added to the fore edge. There is a moderate amount of mottling to the text pages. Else the pages are in excellent condition, the printing is sharp and clear and has not run. There are notes written in brown ink, in German, on the first two of the blank pages at the end of book, One of the 45 blank leaves is loose. The full title is: Die Alten Jüdischen Heiligthümer/Gottesdienste und Bewohnheiten /für Augen gestellet/In einer ausführlichen Beschreibung des ganzen Levitischen Priesterthums/und fünff unterschiedenen Büchern.
