PIERRE MORTIER 1661-1711
NOVIGRADO VILLE DES VENETIENS DANS LA DALMATIE/CATARO VILLE DES VENETIENS DANS LA DALMATIE 1704 AMSTERDAM
|
M F Bywater edits: HISTORIC ACCOUNTING LITERATURE. Matthieu de la Porte
LA SCIENCE NEGOCIANS ET TENEURS DE LIVRES
|
Paris 1704, facsimile by the Scholar Press & the Yushodo Press, London & Tokyo 1980. - Thick oblong octavo, plates . Lettered simulated vellum & grey boards. A superb facsimile. One of only 125 copies issued as part of a highly important set along with 49 similar works. [ Never before sold separately - only previously sold as part of complete sets to major world libraries ]. * the texts in the series HISTORIC ACCOUNTING LITERATURE expound and develop the art of book-keeping in the 350 years after Pacioli's seminal Summa de Arithmetica. They show how patterns and conventions were established, and how the following generations built on them in turn. As this body of knowledge accumulated, it became the framework for commercial dealings. Most of these works were intended for the instruction of students and apprentices, or for the use of book-keepers and merchants. The original copies are in the library of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in London, whose holdings in the fields of book-keeping and accountancy are the finest in the world. Most are of the utmost rarity & extremely fragile. Probably the only opportunity to acquire this text in a superbly produced edition, , whose original has so rarely been offered for sale in useful condition, and probably never will be again. Mint condition. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Haen, Anthonie de
De magia liber. Leipzig, I.P. Kraus, 1775.
|
8°: *-**8 A-V8 [V8 blank], pag.: XXVIII, [4] 316 [2]. Cont. paper boards, covers and spine worn. Uncut copy of this rare publication. Antonius de Haen (1704-1776) was one of the best pupils of Herman Boerhaave and became a doctor in his place of birth The Hague, where he ran a wellvisited practise. Due to his fame and reputation he was appointed professor in Vienna. He became the personal physician of empress Maria Theresia. Except for his many publications in the field of medicine he wrote two wellknown tracts to fight the superstition of the people: De magia (1774) en De miraculis (1775). In reaction to these publications De Haen’s reputation was seriously attacked by his fellow physicians and later biographers. They condemned his supposed defence of magic and superstition. However, that was unjust. Boersma writes that De Haen only attempted to provide generally acceptable rules to unmask fraud in an invironment in which the existence of magic was disputable. The present edition of De magia is probably the second, published in Leipzig as the first edition.

Pascal, Blaise
Thoughts on religion, and other subjects ... translated from the French.
|
London Pr. by W.B. for A. & J Churchil, R. Sare, & J. Tonson 1704 8vo (19.4 cm, 7.6"). [2], lviii,[12], 352, 361-76, 369-92 pp. (text complete despite pagination). First edition of this English translation, done by Basil Kennett, of Pascal's acclaimed defense of Christianity. Left as unfinished fragments at the time of Pascal's death, the Pensées include the famous argument of the wager. Kennett, an antiquary and translator of a number of French works, served as the first chaplain to the British merchants at Leghorn - where his ministry incurred the wrath of the Inquisition. An interesting international addition to this book's trouble with religious authority, for the Pensees were placed on the Index shortly after their original publication. Binding: Contemporary speckled calf and mottled calf framed and panelled in gilt rules with gilt-stamped corner fleurons; recently rebacked with speckled calf, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-stamped decorations within gilt-dotted raised bands. ESTC T144329; Lowndes 1795. On Kennett, see: Oxford Dictionary of National Biography online. Binding as above, corners and edges with minor rubbing; lower (closed) edges institutionally rubber-stamped. Front fly-leaf with early inked ownership inscription. Pages age-toned and in some instances browned; old, usually (but not quite always) faint waterstaining to a number of leaves; corner creases from old dog-earring and one old inkblot, one leaf with closed tear from outer margin touching a few letters without loss. Pagination erratic, but catchwords correct and text continuous. A solid, usable copy in an attractively refreshed binding.

Ware, James
The antiquities and history of Ireland.
|
London Awnsham & John Churchill and Jonathan Robinson 1704-05 Folio (31.7 cm, 12.4"). [18], 172 (i.e., 178), [14], 76 (i.e., 80), 164, 64, 175-196, [4], 70, 44, 55 (i.e., 57), [1], 28, [4], 42 (i.e., 46), [4], 59, [1] pp. (pagination erratic); 4 plts., 1 map. First English edition of Sir James Ware's landmark compendium of Irish history, originally published in Latin in 1654 as De Hibernia antiquitatibus ejus disquisitiones. Often compared to the great English historian William Camden, the Irish-born Ware produced what was then the most inclusive and authoritative work to date on the origins of Ireland and her people. The DNB says that, "With its copious detail and trustworthy description of the antiquities and traditions of Ireland, De Hibernia finally brought the country out of the shadow of Britain and characterized it fully to a scholarly European audience." The main title-page bears a London imprint, but - as is seen in a large number of reported copies - the separate sectional title-pages give Dublin, printed by Andrew Crook, some dated 1704 and some 1705. The pagination and signatures are wildly erratic, but the text is complete; the volume is illustrated with four plates (including depictions of armory, coins, harps, and other antiquities) and a map of Hibernia. A handwritten copy of the 1553 prophecy (in French) of George Vousuel, Archbishop of Dublin, is laid into the volume. ESTC T142075; Lowndes 2842. On Ware, see: Oxford Dictionary of National Biography online. Recent half calf and marbled paper-covered sides, leather edges tooled in blind, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label, gilt-dotted raised bands, and gilt-stamped decorations in compartments. Title-page, browned, with inked gift inscription in upper margin, dated 1835. Lower (closed) edges, title-page, and several other pages institutionally rubber-stamped. Plate leaves and some others browned, with most pages age-toned or foxed but paper not brittle; smudges to edges of endpapers and some other leaves; last few leaves with page edges delicately nibbled! Occasional early inked and pencilled marginalia. => A sound, enjoyable copy.
