Navarette, Domingo Fernández.
An Account of the Empire of China, Historical, Political, Moral and Religious. A short Description of that Empire, and notable Examples of its Emperors and Ministers. Also an Ample Relation of many remarkable Passages, and things worth observing in other Kingdoms, and several Voyages. There are added the Decrees of Popes, and Propositions defin’d at Rome for the Missions of China; and a Bull of our Most Holy Father Clement X. in favour of the Missioners. [half-title].
[London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchill], [1704]. First English Edition, folio, contemporary Cambridge panelled calf, rebacked in keeping, original endpapers and paste-downs; pp. (iv)+424. Complete as issued in Vol. I of Churchill’s “A Collection of Voyages and Travels, some now Printed from Original Manuscripts, others translated out of Foreign Languages, and now first Publish’d in English...”, London, 1704, 4 vols. folio. No illustrated edition was published until 1744. In seven parts: 1) Description of the Great Empire of China. 2) Chinese Government, Sects and History. 3) Politics and Ethics of Confucius. 4) Chinese Moral Doctrines and a discussion of the popular Ming Dynasty tract ‘Ming-hsin-pao-chien’. 5) Longobardi on the Chinese Literati, their philosophies and conversion. 6) The Author’s Travels in 1646 to New Spain, Mexico, the Philippines, the Celebes, Macao, Fukien, Canton, Peking, Malacca, India, Surat, Madagascar, and return to Rome in 1670. With an account of the Tartar Invasion and Conquest of the Ming Dynasty. 7) Decrees and Propositions resolved in Rome... on Chinese Christians; and a Treatise on Confucian beliefs and worship, and official Catholic exchanges in connection with the China Mission. Vol. I of Navarette’s intended 3-volume work was first published in Madrid, 1676 to include these seven translated parts, and for the first time brought the controversy over Chinese Rites to public attention in Europe. Navarette’s Vol. II was immediately suppressed by the Spanish Inquisition before printing was complete and very few copies survived. Vol. III was never published. As a Dominican, Navarette attacked the Jesuits for permitting superstitious practices and for softening the essentials of Christianity which might prove obstacles to the Christian conversion of the Mandarins. This attack was countered by the Jesuit Juan Cortés Osorio in anonymous tracts published 1676 and 1677, and led to the Rites Controversy which later led to the dissolution of the Jesuits and their departure from China. Lust 246. Cordier 34.

Title printed in red & black. 52 (incl. frontis.), [4], 510 pp.; 632 pp. Small thick 8vo, cont. speckled sheep (foot of spine a little chipped, some browning), spine richly gilt. Hamburg: C. Liebezeit, 1704.pSecond edition (1st ed.: Paris: 1679) of "the most celebrated and frequently consulted seventeenth-century private library catalogue. The library was largely formed by Jacques Auguste De Thou (1553-1617), the eminent French historian and statesman. Although the purpose of its publication was the sale of the De Thou library, which took place in 1681, its continued usefulness called for a reprint in 1704 [the present edition]...Most of the descriptions are in fact not by the brothers Dupuy but by the well-known scientist Ismael Boulliau (1605-1694), who arranged them according to a bibliographical system which, with slight variations by Prosper Marchand (1676-1756), and Gabriel Martin (1679-1761), was the one most frequently adopted in France and became known as the 'Systeme des Libraires de Paris'."!Grolier Club, Bibliography, 76!(1st ed.). The "reprintings of catalogues of private libraries like those of the Thuana and the Aprosiana...are good evidence of the use of these catalogues as reference works. The books in all these collections have been scattered, and the reprinted catalogues could serve only bibliographers and scholars."!Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 110!(who also notes on page 265 that Schelhorn preferred the 1704 edition). Very nice copy and rare. Bookplate of A. de St. Ferriol and D. Henry. Pollard & Ehrman, pp. 208-09 & 211-12.. First Edition. Hard cover.

Makdisi, Saree Nussbaum, Felicity
The Arabian Nights in Historical Context: Between East and West
Oxford University Press (United Kingdom), 2008. BRAND NEW HARDBACK 234 High by 156 Wide by 22 deep in mm. (352) alf layla wa layla (known in english as a thousand and one nights or the arabian nights) changed the world on a scale unrivalled by any other literary text. inspired by a fourteenth-century syrian manuscript, the appearance of antoine galland's twelve-volume mille et une nuits in english translation (1704-1717), closely followed by the grub street english edition, drew the text into european circulation. over the following three hundred years, a widely heterogeneous series of editions, compilations, translations, and variations circled the globe to reveal the absorption of the arabian nights into english, continental, and global literatures, and its transformative return to modern arabic literature, where it now enjoys a degree of prominence that it had never attained during the classical period. beginning with a thorough introduction situating the arabian nights in its historical and cultural contexts-and offering a fresh examination of the text's multiple locations in the long history of modern orientalism--this collection of essays by noted scholars from 'east', 'west', and in-between reassesses the influence of the nights in enlightenment and romantic literature, as well as the text's vigorous after-life in the contemporary arabic novel.
