Amsterdam: Pieter Mortier, 1704. First Edition Illustrated by Jan and Kaspar Luyken. Attractively illustrated Dutch edition, translated by W.Sewel, of the works of the most celebrated of Jewish historians. Josephus, a Jewish priest and Pharisee, opposed the revolt against Rome, but accepted the government of the two Galilees, and in 67 A.D. defended the city of Jotapata against the powerful Roman army under Vespasian. The only survivor, his life was spared because of his prediction that Vespasian would become Emperor. Included here are his history of the Jews from creation to the outbreak of the war with Rome in 66 A.D., his chronicle of the Jewish war from the capture of Jerusalem by Antiochus Epiphanes to 73 A.D., his two books written against Apion, &c. "Without [these writings] little would have been known of the history of the Second Temple nor would it have been possible to write such a history. In point of literary talent Josephus ranks among the leading writers in world literature. His style is epic, his portrayals plastic, his gift of description captivates the reader alike by its fidelity and its colorful presentation" (Encyc. Judaica). Graesse III 482.

HENNEPIN, Father Louis
Voyage Curieux
|
1704 1704. HENNEPIN, Father Louis. Voyage Curieux du R. P. Louis Hennepin, Missionaire Recollect, & Notaire Apostolique. WITH: De La Borde, Sieur. Voyage Qui Contient un Relation Exacte de l'Origin, Moeurs, Coutumes, Religion, Cuerres & Voyages des Caraibes, Sauvages des Isles Antilles de l'Ameriqe. Leide: Pierre Vander Aa, 1704. 12mo, early full speckled brown calf rebacked with original elaborately gilt-decorated spine laid down, raised bands, all edges marbled. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $4800. Early edition of Hennepin's important account of his American exploration, with engraved frontispiece, two large folding maps and six folding copper-engraved plates, including a view of Niagara Falls and a depiction of a Buffalo, together with the first edition of De La Borde's account of his travels in the Caribbean. One of the most famous explorers in the wilds of North America during the 17th century, Louis Hennepin was born in Belgium and entered the Catholic Church in his youth. He was sent to Canada in 1675 as a member of expedition under the command of La Salle, who had recently been appointed to the governorship of Fort Frontenac in the French dominions. Hennepin served as a missionary in Quebec while the expedition underwent preparations. "During his period of residence at Quebec, Hennepin employed his leisure time with great industry in travelling to regions within twenty or thirty leagues of that city! always with a view to learning the languages and customs of the Indians as to prepare himself for missionary labors among the savages of the North American continent. He was an acute observer, and his books contain most minute and accurate descriptions of the characteristics, arts and customs of the Indians." In 1678, the expedition under La Salle departed, sailing from the Niagara River. They reached the mouth of the Detroit River by August and Green Bay by September. They continued on their journey throughout the winter months and constructed Fort Crevecoeur on the shore of Lake Peoria. "Early in his journey Hennepin passed Niagara Falls and thus became the first European to describe the natural wonder." In 1680 Hennepin was dispatched by La Salle with two others "to proceed down the Illinois River, and then up the Mississippi River as far as possible upon a voyage of discovery." Leaving in February, Hennepin and his party soon reached the Mississippi and turned northwards. "On 12 April they were captured by a band of the Issati Sioux! Hennepin's captors were on their way to make war against the Miamis and the Illinois, but abandoned their design after capturing the three explorers. They travelled 19 days! Whenever the Indians moved about from place to place, according to their nomadic inclinations, they carried with them Hennepin and the two other captives. During one of their excursions the wanderers stopped at the great cataract in the Mississippi which is now encircled by the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and which still bears the name of St. Anthony Falls, given to it by Hennepin" (Catholic Encyclopedia). Eventually Hennepin and his party met the great French explorer Daniel Graysolon Du Lhut, who interceded on their behalf with the Indians and secured their release. They accompanied Du Lhut and his followers down the Mississippi to the mouth of the Wisconsin, and eventually they made their way to back to Quebec. Hennepin returned to Europe and published his first account of his adventures in Paris in 1683. Another work followed in 1697, and yet another in 1698; both of these were published in English in 1698. Hennepin's works were of tremendous popularity and value, although he has been accused of embellishing his accomplishments in the later works. "Hennepin was the first to describe the Niagara Falls, and although his books were famous, his too-easy adoption of tales and stories discredited his accounts. His maps of the French territories were among the best of the period. His misshapen Great Lakes embodied some of the most advanced information of the time" (America Explored, 155). "One of the most significant contributions to the early exploration of North America" (Bonham). This edition, an early reprint of the 1697 Nouvelle Decourverte, includes the first publication of De La Borde's account of his travels in the West Indies. In addition to the two important maps, Voyage Curieux has six folding plates, including one of an American bison and one of Niagara Falls. Variant issue, with Leide imprint. Howes H416. Sabin 31353. Wing H1450. Church 772. Field 685. Graff 1864. Streeter 106. Text and plates in excellent condition, with one small closed tear to one map and minor marginal wormholing; joints of early calf binding a bit tender, but cords holding firm. An exceptionally attractive copy of an important work.

DEFOE, Daniel
The Storm: or, a collection of the most remarkable casualties and disasters which happen!d in the late dreadful tempest, both by sea and land
|
G. Sawbridge... J. Nutt London: G. Sawbridge... J. Nutt, 1704. FIRST EDITION. 8vo.. With a folding leaf following page 222 containing a list of such of Her Majesty's Ships, with their commanders' names, as were cast away by the violent storm on Friday night, the 26th of November 1703. Contemporary calf, spine gilt; some staining, paper toned due to stock. First edition of this amazing book by Defoe describing the great storm of 1703, which raged from 26 to 27 November, the only true hurricane ever to have made it over the Atlantic Ocean to the British Isles at full strength. It caused severe damage to London and Bristol, uprooting millions of trees. Over eight thousand people lost their lives. Defoe, bankrupt and just released from prison for seditious writings, made the most of this disaster to write the present work, his first full book. He collected eyewitness accounts of suffering and survival. He put advertisements in newspapers asking people to tell him of their personal experiences and to describe local damage, and indeed people wrote from all over the country. It was quite an innovative piece of journalism and provided Defoe with the opportunity to not only publish a fascinating chronicle of the aftermath of the Great Storm of 1703, but to transcribe for posterity a definitive record of Britain's night of destruction. #11;#11;Defoe (1661-1731), English novelist, poet, journalist and government agent, is best known for Robinson Crusoe, considered the first true novel in English. #11;

GIUSTIFICAZIONE DEL PRATICATO SIN'ORA DA' RELIGIOSI DELLA COMPAGNIA DI GES, NELLE MISSIONI DEL MADUREY, MAYSSUR, E CARNATE; ..... NELLA STAMPERIA DELLA REV. CAMERA APOST
|
.......presentata ... in occasione del decreto, loro intimato in Pudiciery [Pondicherry] dalla chiara memoria del Sig. Card. di Tournon ... 1704. [Reason for sin'ora practised by the Religious Company of Jesus, in the missions of Madurey, Mayssur and Carnate]. First Edition. Small Folio. [vi], 210+ 46 + [35] pages. Period full vellum. A near fine copy. A justification of the activities of the Jesuit missions in Southern India in the Malabar Rites Controversy. "On 6 November 1703, Charles-Thomas Maillard de Tournon, a Piedmontese prelate, Patriarch of Antioch, sent by Clement XI, with the power of legatus a latere, to visit the new Christian missions of the East Indies and especially China, landed at Pondicherry. Being obliged to wait there eight months for the opportunity of passing over to China, Tournon instituted an inquiry into the facts alleged by the Capuchins. He was hindered through sickness, as he himself stated, from visiting any part of the inland mission; in the town, besides the Capuchins, who had not visited the interior, he interrogated a few natives through interpreters; the Jesuits he consulted rather cursorily, it seems. Less than eight months after his arrival in India, he considered himself justified in issuing a decree of vital import to the whole of the Christians of India. It consisted of sixteen articles concerning practices in use or supposed to be in use among the neophytes of Madura and the Karnatic; the legate condemned and prohibited these practices as defiling the purity of the faith and religion, and forbade the missionaries, on pain of heavy censures, to permit them any more. Though dated 23 June 1704, the decree was notified to the superiors of the Jesuits only on 8 July, three days before the departure of Tournon from Pondicherry. During the short time left, the missionaries endeavored to make him understand on what imperfect information his degree rested, and that nothing less than the ruin of the mission was likely to follow from its execution. They succeeded in persuading him to take off orally the threat of censures appended, and to suspend provisionally the prescription commanding the missionaries to give spiritual assistance to the sick pariahs, not only in the churches, but in their dwellings"(Wikipedia). The Art of Painting after the Italian Manner. With practical observations on the principal coloures, and directions how to know a good picture.
|
(8) + 142 + (9) + (1)pp advert. A very good copy in contemporary panelled calf, expertly rebacked, gilt decorated spine and red gilt label. Some slight foxing and light browning to a few pages. Scarce. A reissue with cancel title-page of the 1703 edition. ESTC t135952. 8vo. London. for D. Brown. 1704. A rare work, plainly written and free from the "rhetorical flourishes" of its predecessors. "Take then these instructions... do not reject them because they are not derived from a Stately Fountain; because the Water falls not from the Mouth of a Serpent, the Jaws of a Dragon, or the Nostrils of a Sea-Monster, for he that is dry will be glad to quench his thirst from a Leaden Cistern, or an Earthen Pitcher." Elsum provides practical instuction on the importance of sound draughtsmanship, the making and use of grids for squaring up drawings, the variety and use of colour, and the various techniques of oil and dry-painting. He also advises the artist to consider the 'quality' of the client and argues that painters should 'suit their works to the quality of the place and person.' For the client he provides lists of suitable works for display in libraries, halls, palaces, town-houses, and publick schools.

CAUS, Isaac de.

London: Printed for J. Moxon … 1704. First edition thus, assembling two important and rare texts relating to the early development of the steam engine: (1) Isaac de Caus’s accounts of hydraulics as used in garden automata, and of a supposed ‘perpetual motion’ machine; and (2) a description of Thomas Savery’s celebrated steam-pump, which raised water through the use of steam pressure and the vacuum created by the condensation of steam. Savery had patented his engine – ‘the first practical application of steam to mechanical purposes’ (Oxford DNB) – in 1698, demonstrating it before the Royal Society in the following year, when a brief description was also published in the Philosophical Transactions. He first fully described the steam-pump, which was designed to draw water up from coal mines, in The Miners Friend (1702, scarce); the engraved plate of ‘The Engine for Raising Water by Fire’ and ‘The Engine Working in a Mine’ included here first appeared in that work. Savery’s engine was only moderately successful as it could not raise water from a great depth, but it was the immediate forerunner of the improved steam engines of Thomas Newcomen (with whom he later worked) and James Watt.Salomon de Caus (1576-1626) was architect and hydraulic engineer to the Elector Palatine in Heidelberg, responsible for laying out the gardens and designing the many waterworks and automata which made the gardens one of the wonders of Europe. In Les Raisons des forces mouvantes avec diverses machines (1615) he described the expansion and condensation of steam, and the use of heat to ‘raise’ water; his son or nephew, Isaac de Caus, who followed his relative’s trade in England, adapted the work in Nouvelle invention de lever l’eau (London, 1644), first translated by John Leak as New and rare Inventions of Water-Works in 1659 (folio, pp. 34, very scarce). A New Invention reprints the first part of the 1659 work, comprising 19 propositions on the ‘Theory of the Conduct of Water’, with woodcuts from the same blocks. All the forerunners of A New Invention are uncommon, and it too is scarce: ESTC shows only seven copies (BL, University of London, St. Andrews; Cornell, Lehigh (imperfect), Smithsonian (imperfect) and Swarthmore).Goldsmiths’ 4050.

Biblical Scene. Noahs Ark. Engraved Print]: LUYKEN, Jan.
De Sondvloed. Le Deluge [The Flood].
|
[Amsterdam]: P. Mortier, [1704]. - ¦ From one of the finest series of 18th-century biblical illustrations, by Amsterdam born artist, engraver and poet Jan Luyken (1649-1712). The present plate was produced for a Dutch edition of Josephus Works (P. Mortier, 1704); it was reissued by Covens & Mortier in 1729, and appeared in F. Houttuyns new edition in 1747. Little is known about Luyken who apprenticed for the painter Martinus Saeghmolen; he appears to have abandoned his early libertine ways and former associates after a religious conversion at the age of 26. Distinguished by their clarity and detail, Luykens works were quite popular in the period after Rembrandt. Digital image available upon request. ¦ Eighteenth-century copper engraved plate, illustrated surface measuring 32 by 41 cm. Mild embrowning and rumpling at blank edges, else fine. Professionally presented in hinged archival mat with mylar guard, suitable for framing. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
