Amsterdam Pierre Mortier 1704 414 x 522 mm. Belle vue gravee de Messine, issue de l'edition du "Nouveau Theatre d'Italie" de Johannes Blaeu publiee par Pierre Mortier entre 1704 et 1705. Il s'agit de l'une des planches modifiees par Mortier. Le port de la ville est animee de nombreux voiliers. Avec grande table de renvois. Considere comme l'un des fleurons de la topographie, le "Nouveau Theatre d'Italie" contient les plus beaux panoramas de villes italiennes jamais realises. Composee de 3 volumes, la premiere edition fut publiee en 1663. La nouvelle edition de Pierre Mortier fut augmentee d'un quatrieme volume. Tres legeres traces d'humidite au coin inferieur gauche, pliure centrale renforcee. Bonne condition generale. Koeman, I, Bl 85.

Wüthrich III, S. 18 ff. - Zweite Folioausgabe der berühmten Merian-Bibel. - "Zur Kenntnis der biblischen Geschichte haben Merians Kupferstiche sehr viel beigetragen... Die Leistung Matthäus Merians als Vermittler der Kenntnis und Anschauung der biblischen Geschichten ist sehr groß und wurde wohl durch keinen der späteren Illustratoren übertroffen, kaum erreicht" (Ph. Schmidt). - "Als reine Bilderbibel mit Versen erschienen die "Icones Biblicae" 1625 bis 1627. Die Platten gingen dann an den Verlag Lazarus Zetzners Erben in Straßburg, der sie 1630 erstmals für eine Bibel verwendete. Dann verschwanden sie für 70 Jahre. Kopien der Merianschen Kupferstiche verbreiteten vier Amsterdamer Verleger viele Jahrzehnte. Seit 1670 wurden Nachschnitte auch von Paris aus bis nach England und Deutschland vertrieben. Sie fügte 1703 der Frankfurter Verleger Balthasar Christoph Wust wieder in eine Bibel ein. Erst daraufhin brachten die Verlagsnachfolger Merians die Originalplatten wieder ans Licht und publizierten 1704 eine neue Ausgabe..." (J. Bellot in "Museum der Bücher", Dortmund 1986). - Rücken fachgerecht restauriert, Titel und Vorwort etwas wasserfl., sonst nur vereinzelt schwach stockfl., die Kupfer überwiegend sauber und in kräftigen Abdrucken, schönes Exemplar in einem dekorativen zeitgenöss. It contained no fewer than 34 Caxtons, and a large number of works from presses of Lettou, Machlinia, the anonymous “Schole mayster” of St. Albans, Wynkyn de Worde, Pynson, and the rest of the old English typographers, many of which were unique copies.’—Fletcher, p.205. (itat de parution) "Frontispice, titre (avec au verso le portrait de Sophie-Charlotte, reine de Prusse), 16 ff. non chiffres, 201 pp., 3 pp. de table - Suivi d'un frontispice, d'un nouveau titre : Traite de l'Image du Monde en abrege, Berlin Dusarret, 1703 ; 6 ff. n. ch., 30 pp., titre, 192 pp., 1 f. errata. iDITION ORIGINALE et sans doute UNIQUE, des oeuvres de Daniel Dominique de Mouchy, totalement inconnu des biographes et bibliographes francais et qu'il faut, sans hesiter, cataloguer parmi les heteroclites, voire les fous litteraires. L'orthographe et la grammaire lui sont totalement etrangeres. Ses citations latines sont aberrantes. Meme la typographie de ce recueil est heteroclite. Les caracteres d'imprimerie varient de style et de corps d'un poeme a l'autre. Quant aux poemes, il nous suffira d'en donner quelques echantillons : "Si nous voulons prevenir Ala rude mort mortelle Il faut toujours Dieu benir Prier sa grace eternelle" ou encore : "Mais si la maline troupe Se met toute Sous l'etendard malheureux Et se bande je peu dire Que l'Empire En sera ruine par eux." Monsieur de Mouchy veut reformer l'orthographe. Il s'en explique dans 4 pages au debut du volume. Il veut qu'on ecrive comme on parle, en supprimant les lettres que ne se prononcent pas, etc. Les poemes des pp. 100-170 sont rediges dans cette orthographe. Quant a son talent lyrique, sans doute n'est-il point dupe lorsqu'il avoue avec candeur dans son avis au lecteur : "qu'on trouvera beaucoup plus de negligeance dans le corp du livre depuis l'a page 1 et seconde jusques a la page 81, que dans tout le reste de l'ouvrage, d'autant que je n'etais pas verce dans la poesie comme je le suis presentemant, comme on poura voir dans toute la suite, il me semble que du depuis la mort de SUPINA (p. 82) jusques a la fin, les vers en sont beaucoup meilleurs." Avant de conclure que sans doute "les critiques incomodes ni trouveront aucun charmes, mais jespere que les autres ni trouveront point de degouts, ceux qui aimeront les choses qui y sont dites suporteront la maniere dont elles y sont dites, et se qui penetrera le coeur, ne blessera point les oreilles, on sait for bien q'homere, virgile, ciceron et plusieurs autres excellans pouetes de l'antiquite n'ont point etez parfaits tout d'un coup..." La 2e partie du volume, le Traite de l'image du monde est une septimanie en prose, ou il raconte en charabias rococo la creation du Monde, avec des descriptions scientifiques d'animaux, plantes, etc. volees sans doute dans d'anciens recueils. La preface de son libraire est curieuse : "Voici un Autheur nouveau, qui paroit sur les rangs et qui veut tater le gout du public par ce premier Essai (...) Le nom de De Mouchy excitera la curiosite de ceux qui ont quelque connoissance des Familles illustres de France ; Ils voudront savoir si notre Autheur descend de cette ancienne et noble Famille qui se conserve encore aujourd'huy dans l'eclat, mais comme je n'ay point d'ordre de satisfaire la Curiosite du public la-dessus, et que j'aprehende de blesser la modestie de l'Autheur. Il me suffira presentement de dirre que son Nom m'est une Enigme et un mistere que l'on pourra devoiler dans la suite." On ne saura rien de plus sur l'identite de ce vrai ou faux Mouchy. Par ses vers on apprend qu'il est jeune et que sa jeunesse est craintife. Craintif peut etre, mais deja vaniteux. On dit que les imbeciles inscrivent leur nom partout. Celui-ci en a parseme son livre, y compris dans des poemes acrostiches. Page 47 on trouve son portrait grave avec une devise en mauvais latin : in manibus Domini sortes mei. Dans un poeme au sujet de son portrait, il affirme que celui-ci prouve que Dieu l'a forme a son image. De nombreux poemes, signes d'initiales de pretendus amis de l'auteur (mais visiblement rediges par lui-meme) celebrent les talents du cher De Mouchy, sa gloire et ses "immortels ecrits". Le solitaire chretien n'etait donc point exempt de vanite mondaine ni de courtisanerie. Plusieurs poemes flagorneurs sont adresses a la reine de Prusse et au roi de Prusse. Exemplaire a l'etat de parution, tres frais et en partie non coupe."

Importante y muy raro Indice de Libros Prohibidos, publicado en Roma por el Vaticano, en una edición de tipografia microscópica. Contiene hasta siete apéndices, todos ellos incluidos en la paginación, a excepción del último de 2 hojas, que está fechado en septiembre de 1750. - RISM B I, S. 554 (RISM weist insgesamt nur 2 Exemplare nach). - Mit Widmung (Text über zwei Seiten) an die "tres haute et tres puissante Dame Henriette de Coligny, Comtesse d'Adinton et de la Suze" von "P...." diese wird gefolgt von zwei Epigrammen "A monsieur P. Sur les Chansons contre les abus de la Table" signiert mit "T....." und einem "Avertissement au Lecteur". Mit schöner Titelgestaltung. - Der Band enthält Chansons von Le Maire (vermutlich Charles L., Altist am Hofe, gestorben 1704, Verfasser eines eigenen Hefts mit "airs à boire", Ballard 1727), Bénigne de Bacilly (1625-1692, Priester von Beruf und ebenfalls Verfasser von Heften mit "chansons à boire" - vgl. Eitner I, S. 295). Weitere Stücke: Meliton, Sicard und 14 Anonyma. - Es läßt sich eine Einkreisung des Autors P.... vornehmen: einiges deutet darauf hin, daß es sich um François Pinel (1635-1709, Lautenist am Hofe) handelt (siehe Eitner VII, S. 267 u. Misc. 2.875ff): ein Ms. aus dem Besitz R. Ballards (!) ist überliefert und eine Mademoiselle Julie Pinel (Tochter?) gab 1737 ein "nouvel [!] recueil d'airs... à boire" heraus (vgl. Eitner VII, S. 451). - Titel mit Besitzstempel von Alfred Cortot. - Titelblatt oben ca. einen halben cm stärker beschnitten als der restliche Buchblock. Exemplar insgesamt etwas knapp beschnitten (kein Textverlust). Minimal wasserrandig, geringe Gebrauchsspuren. - Sehr selten.

High school record incorporating a very rare mnemotechnical print-series MANUSCRIPT NOTE-BOOK containing a course on physics, together with a letter-press table of contents of this course, an extensive engraved pictorial memory aid, and a letter-press list of names of students following the courses in philosophy and physics at the Jesuit College Aquicinctinus (College d'Anchin) in Douai.

With large folding letter-press table, woodcut printer's device of the Widow of Balthazar Bellerus on title of the published list of names, and engraved print-series, consisting of a richly designed architectural title and 20 full-page finely engraved plates, each with numerous small illustrations to serve as a student's memory aid. 7, (1 blank) pp. for the Student's names list, (1), 20 lvs. for the print-series, and (2 blank, 106, 4 blank) lvs. for the manuscript note-book.. A very rare complete record of a student's secondary education at a Jesuit College at the turn of the 17th and 18th century in Western Europe. It contains: a. SODALES PHILOSOPHI COLLEGII AQUICINCTINI. Douai, the Widow of Balthazar Bellerus, 1704. With large woodcut printer's device on title. 7, (1 blank) pp.- Letter-press list of student's names attending the lectures in philosophy and physics at the Jesuit Highschool, the College d'Anchin at Douai, in 1704, officially published by the Douai publisher's, the Widow of Balthazar Bellerus. The student's names are arranged under four headings: "Physici Scholae Inferiores, - Superiores", and "Logici Scholae Inferiores, - Superiores", and are printed in two columns, each list including almost one hundred students. At the head of the inferior classes in logic two teachers are named: Franciscus Pennaert, abbot of a Cistercian monastry at Douai, and Carolus de Croix, of the Order of the Holy Trinity & the Redemption of Prisoners, probably because they were not Jesuits.- The present publication is an unrecorded edition. b. PALATIUM SAPIENTIAE. Paris, Stephanus (=Etienne) Gantrel, (ca. 1700). Engraved print-series, with a richly engraved architectural title-engraving and 20 full-page beautifully designed plates by Etienne Gantrel (1646-1706), with numerous illustrations to serve as a student's aid to learn all about arts and sciences by heart and memorize by means of the pictures. The title-page has a blank central title-space above a blank cartouche probably meant for the publisher's address, but the address is also engraved at the bottom of the first plate. Each plate is numbered and devoted to a specific subject. The first plate here depicts classical philosophy and ancient religions, the second logic, the third syllogisms, the fourth Aristotelian categories, the fifth Cartesian substance, the sixth Pythagoras' ethics, and from the seventh plate onwards all the plates depict sciences, including astronomy, cosmography, optics, geometry, experimental physics, chemistry, hydrostatics, the experiment of Torricelli, scientific instruments, hygrometers, barometers, mechanics, ballistics, weights, balances, perspective, movement, sound, etc. These print-series to aid the student's memory were very popular at the time, and were published in all kinds of variations. Ours is a jewel in its genre, comprising the whole of scientific knowledge available at the time in a beautiful, very rare and complete baroque print-series. We could not find any record of it. c. HUNC TRACTATUM in quattor partes dividimus. Fine manuscript note-book in which one of the students has taken down the complete course in physics, delivered at the Jesuit College d'Anchin at Douai. The manuscript is clearly arranged and neatly written in a small and regular student's hand, with all headings in thick brown ink, and all initials at the beginnings of the lines in thick brown ink as well. It was probably worked out, quietly at home, from notes taken during the classes. The course is neatly divided in four main parts, and each part is divided in Chapters, called "Dubium". The course treats physical bodies in nature, still according Cartesian thought, movement of physical bodies, including by mechanic means, properties of inanimate and animate matter, including experimental physics, and cosmography. The manuscript is of major importance, as it was probably never printed. d. PRINTED PROSPECTUS of the course on physics, discussed above. Printed on one side of one large folding leaf in four columns, it presents a short survey of the contents of the four main parts of the course on physics delivered at the Douai College. It was propably published by the College itself, with underneath the name of the college's president and teacher: Guilielmo Le Vaillant e Societate Jesu, Artium Doctore ac Philosophiae Professore.- Like all advertising material from the period the prospectus must be of the utmost rarity. De Backer Sommervogel lists a regular Jesuit college at Douai, and Porteman gives the curriculum of such Jesuit Colleges, which were "Latin Schools" really. All children of the town were freely admitted to the regular Jesuit Colleges and the curriculum, completed in five years, consisted of three grammar classes, called: "Figurae", "Grammatica" and "Syntaxis", followed by two more classes: "Poesis" and "Rhetorica". The present record is especially important because it not only gives a complete course of physics, but also includes a rare complete pictorial memory aid for physics and philosophy, as well as a list of students attending the courses, and finally a printed advertisement for the course in physics is present as well. Texte grec avec traduction latine en regard. Geoponica est le nom donne a une encyclopedie en grec sur l'agriculture (au sens large). La version la plus connue a ete compilee a Constantinople sous le regne de l'empereur byzantin Constantin VII Porphyrogenete (913-959). Elle avait pour objectif de recenser et de synthetiser les connaissances CtheoriquesE et pratiques accumulees precedemment sur les sujets touchant l'agriculture (culture des cereales, horticulture, elevage, inologie.). Elle est l'unique ouvrage en grec sur ce theme qui ait ete conserve et l'heritiere d'une tradition que l'on fait remonter a Hesiode (au VIIIe siecle av. J.-C.) et qui fut florissante a l'epoque hellenistique. Environ les quatre cinquiemes du corpus des geoponica sont issus d'un traite du VIe siecle de Cassianus Bassus. Son traite a pour source primaire une compilation realise au IVe siecle par Vindonius Anatalius de Beyrouth. Ex-libris manuscrit sur la page de titre, quelques annotations grecques ou latines anciennes sur les pages de garde. Bon exemplaire, peu courant. 1704

First edition of Jurieu's comparative history of religion, handsomely bound in contemporary calf gilt and with lovely engraved frontispiece of religious figures and ceremonies within decorative border. "A very curious work, containing Jewish and Pagan antiquities; explanations of the rites of [Christianity], and of the idolatries of [competing religions], and numerous illustrations of the facts and opinions recorded in the Hebrew, Grecian and Latin literature" (Lowndes, 1245). Jurieu (1637-1713), a French Protestant divine, was sometimes referred to by the Catholics as the "Goliath of the Protestants" because of his debates with Bayle over religion. Chalmers calls the Histoire Critique "a work of very considerable merit." Text with decorated initials, head- and tailpieces. Brunet 21338. Some light stains and foxing. First edition of this turn-of-the-18th-century annotated bibliography of suggested readings for a liberal education, with Ménestrier's famous chapter on the history of playing cards (Volume II, page 168ff.) and an original pen-and-ink drawing of the medal presented to Louis XIV in 1703 (tipped at Volume I, page 149). French Jesuit Claude-François Ménestrier was famous in his time as a specialist in organizing royal entries and fêtes, court ballets, and allegorical or spectacular events of many kinds. He was also the most widely known heraldist of his time, and today is perhaps best known as the first historian of the ballet, as well as the "father" of research on the history of playing cards. He conducted historical research on Trionfi cards, the origins of which he claimed to be the work of Gringonneur in 1392, and his short essay "Des Principes des Sciences & des Arts Disposez en Forme de Jeux" is published here for the first time. Ménestrier inherited a taste for antiquities from his great-uncle Claude, who had been employed by Cardinal Barberini as librarian charged with collecting art objects and medals. Resulting from this exposure, Claude-François became a recognized theorist of heraldry, producing a number of important publications on the origins of heraldic practices, emblems and mottoes. Having authored at least 83 separate titles, including a biography of Louis XIV—"the bibliography of Ménestrier's works is so considerable that it disconcerts bibliophiles" (Catholic Encyclopedia).
