[Raicsani, Johann]
Vienna: Kurner, 1704. (EMBLEM BOOK) Second (?) edition (first published in Vienna, 1676). 12mo. Frontispiece and 7 engraved emblematic plates by FRANZ-AMBROS (or CHRISTOPH) DIETEL [20], 240 pp. Text in Latin. Contemporary calf, worn, small vertical tear at top of spine, but binding sound; first plate with small chip at outer edge (not affecting image), three small wormholes through first two leaves (reduced to one small hole through the next few); generally quite clean and crisp internally, with only occasional minor spotting. OCLC (no copies of the 1704 edition) . An extremely rare and curious emblem book, with the text in the form of seven dialogues between Vir Politicus and Theologicus by the Hungarian Jesuit theologian Johann Raicsani (or Janos Rajcsanyi). The dialogues concern (1) The Existence of God; (2) Divine Providence; (3) Fate; (4) Predestination and Divine Prescience; (5) Immortality of the Soul; (6) On Gehenna; and (7) Resurrection of the Dead. Along with a frontispiece, each dialogue is preceded by an emblematic engraving by the Viennese artist/engraver Franz-Ambros Dietel (d. 1737?). They are extraordinary, and frequently visionary, pictorial representations of the substance of each of the dialogues. The frontispiece is signed "A. Dietel fecit"; and others simply "D". Dietel and his brother Christoph, sons of Stephan Dietel, were engravers residing in Vienna during the early 18th-century. The plates depart from the usual format of the emblem book in that there is no motto; but the symbolic content of the images, each with an accompanying verse from the Vulgate, places it squarely in the tradition. Evidently Raicsani's text was first published in Vienna in 1676; this appears to be the second Vienna edition (possibly preceded by a 1700 edition printed in Passau - the date is uncertain); and reprints appear as late as 1757. It is not at all clear whether the Dietel plates appeared in the 1686 edition, as none of the online descriptions of the few copies of the first mentions Dietel as the illustrator. As Franz-Ambros' birth is frequently given as 1682, it may be that the father contributed to the first edition, and the brothers to the 1704 edition. The fact is, all editions are rare: we can locate NO COPY OF ANY EDITION IN THE UNITED STATES; only one copy (the Passau edition, at Oxford) in the British Isles; and only two copies anywhere (Bavaria State Library and Austrian National Library) of this 1704 edition

The library was largely formed by Jacques Auguste De Thou (1553-1617), the eminent French historian and statesman. Although the purpose of its publication was the sale of the De Thou library, which took place in 1681, its continued usefulness called for a reprint in 1704 [the present edition]...Most of the descriptions are in fact not by the brothers Dupuy but by the well-known scientist Ismael Boulliau (1605-1694), who arranged them according to a bibliographical system which, with slight variations by Prosper Marchand (1676-1756), and Gabriel Martin (1679-1761), was the one most frequently adopted in France and became known as the 'Systeme des Libraires de Paris'."!Grolier Club, Bibliography, 76!(1st ed.). The "reprintings of catalogues of private libraries like those of the Thuana and the Aprosiana...are good evidence of the use of these catalogues as reference works. Pascal, Blaise
Thoughts on religion, and other subjects ... translated from the French
London:: Pr. by W.B. for A. & J Churchil, R. Sare, & J. Tonson,, 1704.. Binding as above, corners and edges with minor rubbing; lower (closed) edges institutionally rubber-stamped. Front fly-leaf with early inked ownership inscription. Pages age-toned and in some instances browned; old, usually (but not quite always) faint waterstaining to a number of leaves; corner creases from old dog-earring and one old inkblot, one leaf with closed tear from outer margin touching a few letters without loss. Pagination erratic, but catchwords correct and text continuous. A solid, usable copy in an attractively refreshed binding.. 8vo (19.4 cm, 7.6"). [2], lviii, [12], 352, 361-76, 369-92 pp. (text complete despite pagination). . First edition of this English translation, done by Basil Kennett, of Pascal's acclaimed defense of Christianity. Left as unfinished fragments at the time of Pascal's death, the Pens!es include the famous argument of the wager.#11; Kennett, an antiquary and translator of a number of French works, served as the first chaplain to the British merchants at Leghorn - where his ministry incurred the wrath of the Inquisition. An interesting international addition to this book's trouble with religious authority, for the Pensees were placed on the Index shortly after their original publication.#11; Binding: Contemporary speckled calf and mottled calf framed and panelled in gilt rules with gilt-stamped corner fleurons; recently rebacked with speckled calf, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label and gilt-stamped decorations within gilt-dotted raised bands.

CRAUSE, Rudolf Wilhelm
Dissertatio medica inauguralis de philtris, Quam . Præside Rudolffo Gvilielmus Cravsio . Pro Licentia . Simon Pavlvs Hilscher, Altenb. Misn. . A. D. Octobr. A. C. MDCCIV
Typis Christoph. Krebsii, Jena 1704 - Unbound pamphlet 4to . FIRST EDITION of this alchemical dissertation on love potions or "philters" delivered under the praesis of Rudolf Wilhelm Crause (1642-1718). "Dissertations under R.G. Crausius, dean of the medical faculty at Jena, included alchemical subjects, the universal medicine in 1679, the principles and transmutation of metals in 1686; denial of fermentation in the blood, in 1682; mental disease or bordering thereon, such as incubus in 1683, [etc.] . These dissertation sujbects did not become any less magical in the first decode of the next century, when enchanted persons were discussed in 1701, philters in 1704, and the spirit of the world in 1707" (Thorndike VII, p. 357). A fascinating treatise on philters with descriptions of their use and abuse, how to cure and defend against. The later part has extensive alchemical formulas for their creation. Appended to the work is a letter addressed to the eminent German physician, botanist and chemist, Georg Wolffgang Wedel, who also has an interest in the subject of alchemy 51, [1]] pp. Woodcut headpiece. § Ferchl, Chemish-Pharm. [RAICSANI, JOHANN],
Itinerarium Athei ad Veritatis viam deducti; in quo Atheizantium objectae nebulae lucidissimo veritatis Sole disperguntur. Opusculum non minus curiosum, quàm fructuosum, argumentis tam sacris, quàm profanis, & à natur¾ lumine petitis stabilitum. In gratia
Vienna: Kürner, 1704. OCLC (no copies of the 1704 edition). ¶ An extremely rare and curious emblem book, with the text in the form of seven dialogues between Vir Politicus and Theologicus by the Hungarian Jesuit theologian Johann Raicsani (or Janos Rajcsanyi).

GUILLARD, NIC. FR.
IPHIGENI EN TAURIDE, TRAGEDIE REPRESENTEE POUR LA PREMIERE FOIS PAR L' ACADEMIE ROYALE DE MUSIQUE LE MARDI SIXIEME JOUR DE MAI 1704.. HENRI SCHELTE
68 PP. Engraved frontispice [ classical scene] Woodcut printers mark at title. Iphigenie en Tauride (Iphigeneia in Tauris) is an opera by Christoph Willibald Gluck in four acts. It was his fifth opera for the French stage. The libretto was written by Nicolas-Francois Guillard. At the end; catalogue de tous les opera imprimez chez Henri Schelte, a 2-1/2 page with available titles by this prolific Dutch publisher. With Iphigenie, Gluck took his operatic reform to its logical conclusion. The recitatives are shorter and they are recitatif accompagne'. The normal dance movements that one finds in the French Tragedie are almost entirely absent. The drama is based on the play Iphigeneia in Tauris by the ancient Greek dramatist Euripides which deals with Greek mythological stories concerning the family of Agamemnon in the aftermath of the Trojan War. Bound with 7 other other plays as [e.g.] Omphale, l'Europe galante, Marthesie] Some parts with slight waterstain and/ or worming at inner margin. A New Edition Good 16Mo.15.7 x 10.5 Cm. Full-Vellum

This edition is not in Lowndes; BL Cat. IV:1225. The author, English poet and satirist, served Sir Samuel Luke, a noted officer of Oliver Cromwell, during the Puritan Revolution. Following the restoration of Charles II, he wrote this famous mock-heroic poem, the first editions of which were published in 1663, 1664 and 1678, and which was then reprinted many, many times well into the early nineteenth century. Hudibras is a venomous satire against the Puritans, in which Sir Samuel Luke is cast as the model for Sir Hudibras, the butt of the poem.

BAGLIVI, GEORGII:
OPERA OMNIA MEDICO-PRACTICA ET ANATOMICA.
1704. Libro: (MEDICINA). Parisiis: apud Claudium Rigaud, 1704. 4º menor. 28 h.
