Fifth (second folio) book edition of the 'Merianbibel'. This celebrated series of engravings to illustrate the Bible by the Swiss artist and engraver Matthaeus Merian the elder (1593-1650) was first issued in an oblong quarto format between 1625 and 1627 under the title Icones Biblicae, without the biblical text. The illustrations were then incorporated into a folio edition of the Bible published in Strasbourg by the heirs of Lazarus Zetzner in 1630, which was followed by three smaller-format editions and then this second folio edition in 1704. '[Die Merianbibel] ist in Suddeutschland, Basel und dem Elsaß wohl die verbreitetste deutsche illustrierte Bibel gewesen [...] Matthaus Merians Bilderbibel leitete eine Entwicklung der Bibelillustration ein, die immer weiter weg vom reformatorischen Zweck der Bibelbilder zum rein Darstellerisch-Künstlerischen fuhrte [...] Die Leistung Matthäus Merians als Vermittler der Kenntnis und Anschauung der biblischen Geschichten ist sehr groß und wurde wohl durch keinen der späteren Illustratoren übertroffen, kaum erreicht' (P. This is an interesting copy, with the original Canon of the Mass, pp. 284-298, removed and replaced with a 19th century Austrian Empire version of the Canon and a full-page engraving of the Crucifixion by Gustav Leybold after A. Van Dyck mounted on the verso of p. 283; at the end is a 2-page list of changes to be made in parts of the missal to pray for the Austrian Emperor, Franz Josef, in accordance to a decree of 10 February 1860.

First edition in later three-quarters dark brown calf and black cloth with gilt spine title and spinal raised bands; later yellow endpaper, one original blank endpaper preserved at front and rear of each volume. Each volume has an imprimatur leaf. Volume 1 has frontispiece engraved portrait of Lutwyche, a general title-page, and a volume title-page. Volume 2 has a volume title page and a final errata leaf. [16], 912, [4], 913-1668, [104]) p., [1] leaf of plates : port.; the last section is an unpaginated table of cases. Folio. 31 cm. Binding is in a style typical of the late 19th-century but may be more recent. A very good set, tight volumes, the bindings have hints of shelf wear; wide margins in the text, paper is white with a very slight cockle. The text head is dusty and the upper margins of the text have occasional dust intrusions, a few leaves have marginal dust smudges, the earlier leaves have a faint and shallow damp stain at the head that does not intrude into the text. Paper is devoid of any significant edge flaws though one leaf is corner-creased. A very nice set. A very useful and very useable compilation of case reports covering a dynamic and tumultuous period of English law. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Trevoux: Estienne Ganeau, 1704. Two volumes in one. 12mo, contemporary full brown speckled calf, raised bands, elaborate gilt-decorated spine, marbled endpapers. $2200. First edition of this turn-of-the-18th-century annotated bibliography of suggested readings for a liberal education, with Ménestrier's famous chapter on the history of playing cards (Volume II, page 168ff.) and an original pen-and-ink drawing of the medal presented to Louis XIV in 1703 (tipped at Volume I, page 149). French Jesuit Claude-François Ménestrier was famous in his time as a specialist in organizing royal entries and fêtes, court ballets, and allegorical or spectacular events of many kinds. He was also the most widely known heraldist of his time, and today is perhaps best known as the first historian of the ballet, as well as the "father" of research on the history of playing cards. He conducted historical research on Trionfi cards, the origins of which he claimed to be the work of Gringonneur in 1392, and his short essay "Des Principes des Sciences & des Arts Disposez en Forme de Jeux" is published here for the first time. Ménestrier inherited a taste for antiquities from his great-uncle Claude, who had been employed by Cardinal Barberini as librarian charged with collecting art objects and medals. Resulting from this exposure, Claude-François became a recognized theorist of heraldry, producing a number of important publications on the origins of heraldic practices, emblems and mottoes. Having authored at least 83 separate titles, including a biography of Louis XIV—"the bibliography of Ménestrier's works is so considerable that it disconcerts bibliophiles" (Catholic Encyclopedia). With both engraved and letterpress title pages in both volumes. Text in French. Brunet III, 1627. Graesse IV, 448. Owner signature, occasional notations, and manuscript errata sheets. A fine copy, with only a faint dampstain to the bottom margins of a few gatherings.

Ses succes le font appeler au Louvre ou il preche Avent et Careme entre 1667 et 1679. Nomme eveque de Tulle en 1671 et d'Agen en 1679. "Ses oraisons funebres qui font de lui un des grands orateurs la chaire royale, furent tres appreciees de Mlle de Scudery, de Mme de Sevigne, de Flechier et du roi (...) Frankfurt am Main, Johann Philipp Andreä, 1704 - Mit 4 Kupfertafeln und über 220 Kupfern im Text von Matthäus Merian, Format: 37 x 23,5 x 8 cm, Sorgfältig restaurierter Ledereinband in Rotbraun unter Verwendung des originalen Rückens mit reicher Vergoldung. 3-seitiger Goldsc, (42),675,(1),264,162; 182, 328 S Der vermutlich in 19.Jahrhundert erneuerte Einband ist berieben, bestoßen, stellenweise gedunkelt und fleckig. Rückenvergoldung teilweise ausgeblättert und abgestumpft. - Das Titelblatt und die Kupfertafel zum Alten Testament sind in neuerer Zeit frisch aufgezogen und tragen am seitlichen und oberen Rand größere Fehlstellen. Die beiden Innendeckel sind bezogen mit Buntpapier aus alter Zeit und tragen an den Rändern unterschiedliche Altersspuren, ebenso die Vorsätze anfangs und am Schluß. - - Anfangs ein schöner, ausführlicher Familieneintrag aus den Jahren 1791 und 1793. - - Innen stellenweise (meist im Rand) Fleckig und gebräunt. Seitlicher Schnitt wasserfleckig aus alter Zeit. - Insgesamt ca. 15 Blätter tragen Ein- und Ausrisse mit wenig Textverlust. Auf Seite 161 in der Apostelgeschichte ist von einem größeren Riß auch ein Kupfer betroffen. Der überwiegende Teil der Textkupfer (im Format 11,3 x 15 cm) befindet sich in gutem Zustand.

The author's only successful play, its great popularity probably deriving from its violent attacks upon the French. The action is set in Canada, "a vast Tract of Land. on the back of New England and New York". Generally accepted as the first play set in Canada and the first appearance of North American Indians in fiction or drama as well as the first English play set in Canada. The Dramatic Personae include Frontenac, Governor of New France, and Beaufort, General of the English, and Ulmar, Chief of the five Nations Iroquois. (Bale ou Paris), 1704, in-8vo, 180 feuilles non num., page de titre partiel. detachee, papier bruni, au debut du vol. leg. tache d'eau princip. marg., cartonnage d'attente muet, frotte, fane et tache, sans dos. Source d'histoire importante pour l'histoire francaise, suisse et celle de l'Europe en general, pendant le regne de Louis XIV. Cette collection renferme les 21 premieres lettres, ecrites de sept. 1702 jusqu'a fevr. 1704. L'auteur complete quelques-unes de ses lettres de fragments de lettres d'un anglais, et d'un collegue portugais (dont un en italien avec sa traduction francaise), ainsi que d'une "Lettre du Roy (Louis XIV) au Pape, contenant les motifs de la guerre de Savoye". Les lettres 10, 11 et 12 sont intitulees C... lettre d'un Suisse a un conseiller de FribourgE (en Suisse). Cette collection de 21 lettres fut traduite et publiee la meme annee en allemand. L'auteur continua ses lettres jusqu'en janvier de l'annee 1709; la collection complete, qui renferme toutes les lettres ecrites de 1702 jusqu'a 1709, au total 48 lettres, fut publiee en 1711 sous le titre CLettres d'un Suisse a un Francais, ou l'on voit les veritables interets des princes et des nations de l'Europe qui sont en guerre, et divers memoires et actes...E. Les indications et commentaire de Querard sur cette publication: Bale (Paris), F. Delaulne 1703-04, ou 1711, 2 vol. in-12. "Ces lettres sont tres-bien ecrites, avec beaucoup de finesse, et sur de bons memoires; elles avaient pour but de detacher de la coalition les allies de l'Empereur, en montrant que ce prince avait seul interet a continuer la guerre contre la France et l'Espagne". L'auteur traduisit lui-meme ces lettres en latin, en les intitulant CHelvetii Galliae incolae ad Gallum apud Helvetios versant Epistolae ...E, 1703-1711, 2 vol. in-12. Jean de La Chapelle fut attache au prince de Conti comme secretaire de ses commandements, et fit en cette qualite un voyage en Suisse. (Some overloads with old ink.) the princeps edition published in Venice, without date, is undoubtedly not former to 1534. The Latin poet of XVIe century, Pier Angelo MANZOLLI took the name of Marcello Palingenio, anagram of his true name; the twenty first towards acrostics of the first book of this poem give this name in its Latin form: Marcellus Palingenius Stellatus (Palingenius means ressuscity; Stellatus renvoit in Stellata the borough close to Ferrare where it was born). Only work of Manzolli which reached us, the Zodiac, divided into 12 pounds as the astronomical zodiac is in 12 signs, owes mainly its success with the boldness of its tirades against the Roman Church; but it contains also the beautiful ones towards which L'edition princeps parue a Venise, sans date, n'est sans doute pas anterieure a 1534. Le poete latin du XVIe siecle, Pier Angelo MANZOLLI prit le nom de Marcello Palingenio, anagramme de son nom veritable ; les vingt premiers vers acrostiches du premier livre de ce poeme donnent ce nom sous sa forme latine : Marcellus Palingenius Stellatus (Palingenius signifie ressuscite ; Stellatus renvoit a Stellata le bourg pres de Ferrare ou il naquit). Seul ouvrage de Manzolli qui nous soit parvenu, le Zodiaque, divise en 12 livres comme le zodiaque astronomique l'est en 12 signes, doit principalement son succes a la hardiesse de ses tirades contre l'Eglise romaine ; mais il renferme aussi de beaux vers qui lui valurent les eloges de BAYLE, BAILLET, LA MONNOIE et NAUDE. Printz dargestellt.Karl August von Bergen (1704-1759 (ADB), wurde am 11. August 1709 zu Frankfurt a.O. als Sohn des dortigen Professors der Anatomie und Botanik geboren und wurde dessen Nachfolger auf dem Lehrstuhle im Jahre 1738, um dann im Jahre 1744 die Professur der Pathologie und Therapie zu übernehmen. Er ist ein sehr fruchtbarer Schriftsteller in den Geibieten seiner Lehrfächer gewesen; seine besonders bekannten "Elementa anatomicae experimentalis" handeln von der anatomischen und mikroskopischen Technik, über die ganz brauchbare Rathschläge ertheilt werden. - An den Generaldirektor des Geniewesens Graf Ferdinand Philipp von Harsch, der "den Moldau-Fluß von Melnick über Prag bis Stiechowitz in Augenschein genommen" hatte: "Ich halte mir ein wie anderes zur Wißenschaft, und es wird mir angenehm seyn, eine Abschrift von deme zu empfangen, was Dieselbe über die angetragene Schifbarmachung besagten Flußes gutächtlich an Hand gegeben werden." Der Graf von Harsch (1704-1792) hatte sich als österreichischer General im Siebenjährigen Krieg Ruhm erworben. Seit 1761 war er Direktor des Geniewesens (das militärische Ingenieurwesen); nach seinem Entwurf wurde u. a. die Festung Königgrätz erbaut (vgl. Wurzbach VII, 387-88). Die Schiffbarmachung der Moldau, an der Harsch offenbar als Planer und Gutachter beteiligt gewesen ist, wurde im Zuge einer ganzen Reihe von Maßnahmen Maria Theresias zum Ausbau der Infrastruktur und des Verkehrswegenetzes im Habsburger Reich durchgeführt. Die meisten dieser Projekte ließen sich aus Geldmangel nicht realisieren; immerhin konnte der Ausbau der Moldau 1774 abgeschlossen werden (vgl. Jörg Konrad Hoensch, Geschichte Böhmens, München 1997, S. 285).

Printed for Nevil Simmons, Bookseller in Sheffield, 1704. Very good. No dust jacket as issued. With a Preface, giving some account of the Author's Writings and Life [edited by Thomas Ellis, the son] Bound in early, period polished calf with spine in six compartments and five raised bands. Decorative paneling to boards in blind. A comparison of the few institutionally held copies suggests that this is the earlier and rarer of two separate 1704 issues. This example has no mention of Thomas Parkhurst, bookseller, on the title page and contains a Dedication along with errata sheet at rear; A(3)4. Woodcut frontis portrait of the author is mounted. Prior ownership of a Thomas Mee at top edge of title page and of dedication page at rear. Presumably later prior ownership of M. Barry to top edge, recto of frontis and adjacent to the Mee signature on the title page. Text block is clean and neat with no significant toning or staining. Joints sound. Margins at top edge vary in width and are often quite close-possibly by design or by contemporary trimming. A bit of mild rub to boards at edges and superficial pitting to the blind rules. Mild chipping at spine ends. Front flyleaf and blank followed by frontis. Rear with two blanks followed by rear endsheet. Collation: A8, a8, B-Ff8; Gg4; A(3)4. Posthumously issued selection of essays dealing with Parables from the Gospels of Luke and Matthew. Ellis was respected and well-regarded for making his sermons and writings accessible but not overly simplistic to those not blessed with University education.
