In the June issue of Acta Eruditorum for the year 1696 Johann Bernoulli published a paper in which he presented a challenge to the best mathematicians: "Let two points A and B be given in a vertical plane. To find the curve that a point M, moving on a path AMB, must follow such that, starting from A, it reaches B in the shortest time under its own gravity. " Johann adds that this curve is not a straight line, but a curve well known to geometers, and that he will indicate that curve, if nobody would do so that year. Later that year Johann corresponded directly with Leibniz regarding his challenge. Leibniz solved the problem the same day he received notice of it, and almost correctly predicted a total of only five solutions: from the two Bernoullis, himself, L'Hospital, and Newton. Leibniz was convinced that the problem could only be solved by a mathematician who mastered the new field of calculus. (Galileo had formulated and given an incorrect solution to the problem in his Dialogo). But by the end of the year Johann had still not received any other solutions. However, Leibniz convinced Johann that he should extend the deadline to Easter and that he should republish the problem. Johann now had copies of the problem sent to Journal des sçavans, the Philosophical Transactions, and directly to Newton. Earlier that year Johann had accused Newton for having filched from Leibniz' papers. Manifestly, both Johann and Leibniz interpreted the silence from June to Decembe

|
'T Amsterdam, by Jan ten Hoorn [...] 12mo. in 8's (c.16.4 cms x c.9.8 cms. in binding), pp. [24] 159 [1]. With engraved extra title-page featuring scenes from subjects' lives. Medium browning, some glue applied between inner margins of endpapers and first and last pages (pulling away has caused a hole in inner margin of engraved title-page), light spotting and waterstaining, fraying to (blank) margins of first 2 leaves, bound in contemporary vellum boards, title inked on spine, edges mottled red. Contemporary inscription: "Hic liber pertinet ad petrus stinglhamber jbe bonitatim", another notation on front pastedown (shelfmark?): "R_d." Rare book of lives of six English kings who were second of their name: (1-28) William II, (29-45) Henry II, (46-67) Edward II, (68-99) Richard II, (100-123) Charles II, and (124-159) a king especially topical for a Dutch audience, James II. We wonder, in fact, if the rather odd principle for choosing kings to write about is simply an excuse for a biography of the person whom William of Orange had usurped. Van Dueren was a physician, who also wrote (1688) on uroscopy. The dedication to the present book is to the elders of Rotterdam and is signed from that city. Not in COPAC. Copies on OCLC FirstSearch only in Berlin and Univ of Madison, Wisconsin. Not in Dutch National Library (cf. KVK).

The text was published again by the 'Academie des Bibliophiles' in 1866 by Anatole de Montaiglon and with a bibliographic study. A second edition was published in 1760, Ratisbonne. Pagination pp. [14], 152, [27, index], [1, blank], 64, collated and complete with the engraved additional pictorial title (dated 1697) and 10 folding plates. Recent quarter calf, 1 plate with loss to outer edge, neatly repaired tear, a few other marginal repairs to plates, M1&2 repaired tears within text. presenting Nuck's studies on the lymphatics of the kidneys, uterus, ovaries, peritoneum, etc. Pages 130ff. describe Nuck's discovery of the inguinal canal, nambed after him the "canal of Nuck." Also significant was Nuck's experiment in which he ligatured the uterine horns after copulation in a dog, and observed pregnancy afterwards, implantation having taken place above the ligature. He concluded that the embryo was derived from the ovary and not from the sperm. According to Neeham, this is "very important, as one of the earliest instances of experimental procedure" (History of Embryology, p.163).

Frankfurt, Gottlieb Friedeburg, 1696. Gutes Exemplar. VD17 271597C. Dünnhaupt 6.1. Vgl. Faber du Faur 1465 (A. 1722).

Genesis--Sermons--Early works to 1800]. ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: NOTE THE VERY INTERESTING SADDAM HUSSEIN CONNECTION TO THIS BOOK: Saddam's Secret Stash - Martha Lufkin for The Art Newspaper Martha Lufkin for The Art Newspaper: If the captured Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein goes on trial, further details of the torture and brutalization carried out by his regime will undoubtedly be exposed. Meanwhile the U.S. National Archives is carrying out a restoration project of manuscripts and documents relating to the Iraqi Jewish community, which could shed light on its savage repression under Saddam. In May 2003, military personnel looking for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and following a lead for a missing valuable Jewish Talmud, searched the headquarters of the Mukhabahrat, the Iraqi secret police, in Baghdad. Instead of bombs, they found a collection of Judaica, including rare 16th-century books printed in Venice. The cache was pulled from the water-filled basement of the Iraqi secret police building and transferred to Washington, D.C., where it is now being conserved by specialists at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Exactly why the cache, which includes books, administrative documents relating to the Iraqi Jewish community and parchment scrolls, was located at secret police headquarters remains a mystery, although it may include both property confiscated from Iraq's once-thriving Jewish community and information required by the Iraqi government from it. Following increasing violence towards Iraqi Jews from the 1930s, including Jewish registration laws passed in the 1960s, street hangings in 1969 and property confiscation, the Jewish population of Iraq has nearly disappeared. Today, there are only believed to be around 25 Jews left in Iraq. The water damage to the cache occurred when the Mukhabahrat basement was flooded after pipes were broken in the fighting of April 2003. In the weeks after the discovery in May, personnel from the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) retrieved printed and manuscript materials in Hebrew, Arabic, Judeo-Arabic and English from the water, under working conditions made precarious by the presence of an unexploded bomb outside the building. Following removal, the objects were packed into sacks, partially dried, placed in metal trunks and frozen. In August, a preservation assessment report, completed by NARA conservators in Iraq at the request of the CPA, recommended that the materials be "dried as soon as possible" for stabilization and to minimize further mold from water and hot weather. Due to the lack of available conservation facilities in Iraq, the report recommended sending the objects to the U.S for "expeditious" preservation. It would be necessary to ensure protection and final disposition of the items "pending election of a sovereign Iraqi government," the report said. The CPA, as custodian, agreed to the shipment for preservation and exhibition. The transfer to the U.S. in August took place by courier-accompanied U.S. military transport so that the items would remain frozen en route. NARA recommended that after mold remediation, the items be evaluated, conserved and housed for long-term storage. The collection was found in a "greatly deteriorated state" including staining, bleeding inks and distortion, making a detailed inventory in Iraq impossible, the August report said. The preliminary assessment was based on items visible at the top of each frozen trunk. Preservation decisions at that point were "complicated by the lack of concrete information about the provenance of the material and the specific items," the report said. The collection includes Hebrew-language materials such as the "Ketubin" volume of the monumental Third Rabbinic Bible, published in Venice by Giovanni di Gara in 1568; and what appears to be Abraham Brudo's "Birkat Avraham," published in Venice in 1696. Hebrew prayer books, Bibles, commentaries and books published in Baghdad, Warsaw, Livorno and Venice in the late 19th to early 20th century are also part of the cache. Arabic materials include handwritten and printed items relating to the Iraqi Jewish community, including a 1966 request for names for a board of directors of the Jewish community and 1930s documents. The objects entered the United States protected by a grant of U.S. judicial immunity, under a 1965 federal program that shields loans of cultural objects to U.S. nonprofit institutions from court action, if the objects are approved before import by the State Department. The program is commonly used to safeguard loans from foreign museums. In seeking State Department immunity, NARA said it was possible that the Iraqi materials could be subjected to U.S. judicial action, "by persons asserting ownership [of the items], or by persons seeking satisfaction of outstanding claims or judgments against the Iraqi government." NARA said it hoped, however, to complete the preservation project without prejudicing "the determination of the rightful owners of the property." Its plan was "to exhibit the [materials] at a NARA facility, on a temporary basis, at a time and in a manner as NARA deems feasible and appropriate," NARA said. The preservation assessment report was prepared by two NARA conservators, Doris A. Hamburg, director of Preservation Programs, and Mary Lynn Ritzenthaler, chief of NARA's Document Conservation Laboratory. In a statement determining that the Jewish artifacts were of "cultural significance," a prerequisite for federal immunity, the State Department said that the objects were to be imported for "temporary" exhibition and related restoration, and that their "temporary" exhibition by NARA was in the national interest. The CPA remains custodian of the collection. . Full-Leather. Good/None. 4to - over 9!" - 12" tall. Hebrew, Judaica.

Frankfurt, Johann David Zunner, 1696. "Spener is one of the best prose writers of his time. His sentences are short, meaningful, and grammatically correct, and the swing of his discourse is strangely modern. Not really a fighter, he was an unsuitable person to take over the leaderhsip of the new movement: it passed therefore to August Hermann Francke" (Faber du Faur). Exlibris. Kein Exemplar im JAP seit 1950. VD17 1:020995K (Variante: Kustode auf S. 1052 "Re-"). Jöcher IV 726. Nicht bei Faber du Faur, Jantz, Kistner/Seebaß u. a.
