Compendium Geographicum
|

Early Responses to Renaissance Drama
|
Cambridge University Press. It is often assumed that we can never know how the earliest audiences responded to the plays and playbooks of Shakespeare, Marlowe, and other Renaissance dramatists. In this study, old compilations of early modern dramatic allusions provide the surprising key to a new understanding of pre-1660 reception. Whether or not it begins with powerful emotion, that reception creatively applies and appropriates the copious resources of drama for diverse purposes, lessons, and interests. Informed also by critical theory and historical research, this understanding reveals the significance of response to Tamburlaine and Falstaff as well as the importance of drama to Edmund Spenser, John Donne, John Milton, and many others. For the first time, it makes possible the study of particular responses of women and of workers. It also contributes to the history of subjectivity, reading, civil society, and aesthetics, and demands a new view of dramatic production. ISBN10: 0521858437.

Andreas Cellarius
Typus Aspectuum Oppositionum Et Coniunctionum Etz In Planetis
|
Striking celestial chart, with map of the northern hemisphere at the center, with the signs of the zodiac in a surrounding band, winged cherubim in the ether beyond; the map and zodiac band, from Cellarius' Harmonia Macrocosmica seu Atlas Universalis et Novus. The chart illustrates the relative importance of astrology, even in the latter part of the 17th century, showing the primary astrological signs in border of the circle, with a network of lines delineating various relationships between the signs and the four humors-- melancholia, cholicus, etc. Attractive celestial chart with the northern hemisphere, featuring California as an island, at the center. "Shows circular ring of zodiac symbols with lines connecting each to others. At center is map of the northern hemisphere, including California as an island with rounded northern coastline." Burden goes into more detail: "This celestial chart is from Cellarius' famous atlas, like the previous item, and depicts the planetary aspects of the zodiac. Beautifully engraved by Joannes van Loon, it similarly bears a North Polar projection map, although this one is slightly larger at 120 mm. in diameter. Its greater size enables it to depict more detail. Two rivers in the west of North America flow south-westwards. The Rio del Norte of the period is unnamed, and to its north is the R. del nova. California is an Island, and farther north we find a large land mass enditled N.o Albion, separated from the mainland by Anian [though on this later state of the map Anian has been removed]. The map appears to be pro-English, identifying New England and Bermuda, but omitting any reference to New France or even New Netherlands. Florida is also identified..." One of only 125 copies issued only to subscribers as part of a highly important set along with 49 similar works. [ Never before sold separately - only previously sold as part of complete sets to major world libraries ]. * the texts in the series HISTORIC ACCOUNTING LITERATURE expound and develop the art of book-keeping in the 350 years after Pacioli's seminal Summa de Arithmetica. They show how patterns and conventions were established, and how the following generations built on them in turn. As this body of knowledge accumulated, it became the framework for commercial dealings. Most of these works were intended for the instruction of students and apprentices, or for the use of book-keepers and merchants. The original copies are in the library of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in London, whose holdings in the fields of book-keeping and accountancy are the finest in the world. Most are of the utmost rarity & extremely fragile. Probably the only opportunity to acquire this highly important work, whose original has not been offered for sale for many years, and probably never will be again. Near mint condition.

SORBIERE (Samuel).
Lettres et Discours sur diverses matières curieuses.
|
Paris, François Clousier, 1660. - in-4. 14ff. 731pp. Pintard, 1110. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Geistlicher, getauft. 15. Aug. 1613 in Cambidge, gest. 13. Aug. 1667 in Lisburn, 1637 Kaplan Konig Krals I., nach der Revolution Privatmann, 1660 Bischof von Down und Connor, war einer der hervorragendsten Prediger und theologischen Schriftsteller seiner Zeit. Sein bedeutendstes Werk ist der "Ductor dubitantium; or the Rule of Conscience in all her general measures" (London. 1660). Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667), Anglican bishop, who wrote some of the greatest devotional works in the English language. Born in Cambridge, England, Taylor was baptized on August 15, 1613. Following studies at the University of Cambridge, he was ordained in 1633. Because of his eloquence, he was granted a fellowship at All Souls College, University of Oxford, in 1635. In that same year, he was made chaplain to King Charles I. While serving in that capacity Taylor came under suspicion because of his friendship with Christopher Davenport, a Franciscan chaplain to Queen Henrietta Maria. A sermon preached in his own defense reasserted his opposition to Roman Catholicism. Taylor joined the Royalist army as chaplain when civil war broke out in 1642, and after a Royalist defeat in Wales (1645) he was briefly imprisoned. Later the same year, he became private chaplain to Lord Carbery at his estate, Golden Grove. There Taylor produced his greatest works, including A Discourse of the Liberty of Prophesying (1646), a call for charity and tolerance; The Golden Grove (1655), a collection of daily prayers; and the Unum Necessarium (1655), a work on sin and repentance. His two famous books of devotion, The Rule and Exercises of Holy Living (1650) and The Rule and Exercises of Holy Dying (1651), are considered classics. Taylor intended them to act as guides for those not served by local clergy. In 1660 Taylor was appointed bishop of Down and Connor-and later Dromore-Ireland, and vice-chancellor of Trinity College, Dublin. In the same year he published his Ductor Dubitantium, or the Rule of Conscience, an extensive manual of moral theology. Although he faced strong opposition from local Presbyterians and Roman Catholics, Taylor refused to compromise his stand against non-Anglicans. He died in Lisburn, Ireland, on August 13, 1667 - Da wir mit der UPS versenden, ersuchen wir bei Bestellungen die vollstandige Adresse inkl. Telefnummer anzugeben.. 1. Auflage. Softcover.

The interesting plates are very illustrative of the practise of seventeenth century mining. There are editions mentioned of 1617, ca. 1618, 1620 and Stockholm 1690. Very good copy with some contemporary marginal manuscript annotations and ownership's entry on the title: 'anjcss besitzet mich Johann Friderich MZB?, Anspac, 20 May 1679'.- (Binding slightly rubbed).
