Trinity apocalypse (Die Trinity-Apokalypse) Fine Facsimile Illuminated Edition of 13th Century
Faksimile Verlag Luzern Faksimile Verlag Luzern. New. Hardcover. pTrinity Apocalypse 13th century - Trinity College, Cambridge, MS. R.16.2/ppThe Most Famous Gothic Apocalypse /ppMagnificently Illuminated Manuscript from the Early Gothic Period/ppThe most splendid manuscript of the Revelation to John that Gothic art brought forth has been preserved for centuries in the library of Trinity College, Cambridge. Since 1660 the Trinity Apocalypse, which originated in the mid-thirteenth century, has belonged to this valuable collection. Its richly coloured miniatures embellished with finely tooled gold are unparalleled among English apocalypses. But not only the rich decoration is exceptional: the French version of the Revelation with an exegesis of John's visions adapted especially to this manuscript is one of a kind. /ppA Book of Inspiration/ppApocalypses are prophecies about the end of time and the Last Judgement made known in wondrous ways. Divinations of this kind occurred again and again, but the Revelation to John is the only one included in the New Testament. Using mysterious images and striking language, John describes the end of the world and the Last Judgement. Yet terror is not the focus of this vision: the Revelation to John is a book of consolation and inspiration. /ppLavish Splendour with Finely Tooled Gold/ppEven amongst the splendid English apocalypses, the magnificent Trinity Apocalypse stands out as the culmination of manuscript illumination in the Early Gothic period. The rich decoration of this codex is unique. Seventy-one large-format miniatures with over one hundred individual pictures on sixty-two pages and a lavish use of tooled gold leaf contribute to the splendour and beauty of this manuscript. The intense effect that radiates from the miniatures is achieved by the harmonious combination of colours. The expert use of a wide variety of colours, such as ultramarine and indigo in the blue tones, at times soft and then again brilliant, create the impression of movement and liveliness. The use of silver, now oxidized, and the rich application of gold contribute to the magical splendour of the Trinity Apocalypse /ppA Picture Book of the Revelation to John/ppEach of the more than hundred pictures of the Trinity Apocalypse was painted with the greatest attention to detail. Since all of John's visions are portrayed in the miniatures, it is as if the reader is paging through a picture book of the Book of Revelations. The artists have succeeded to an unusual degree in creating an individualistic portrayal of all the figures in the miniatures. The expressive faces of the figures inevitably invite the viewer to pause and reflect. /ppDramatic as the Adventures from a Romance of Knighthood/ppIn many of the miniatures illustrating John's visions, kings, knights and noblewomen, all splendidly armed and attired, appear. Portrayed with great dramatic power, they could be part of a romance of chivalry. The richly embellished illuminations and the depiction of the chivalric ideal underpin the hypothesis that the codex was intended for the highest aristocratic circles. The courtly lady who is frequently depicted in the miniatures is thought to be the patron of the Trinity Apocalypse. Scholars assume that it is Eleanore of Provence, the wife of King Henry III. Perhaps it was she who had the splendid manuscript embellished with gold leaf. /ppJohn's Vita: An Innovative Idea Becomes a Model/ppThe Trinity Apocalypse begins and ends with a picture gallery, framed with resplendent gold borders, illustrating the story of John's life. The idea of framing the Revelation to John with the vita of the author was an absolute innovation in the history of book illumination. The idea became so popular that all English Apocalypse manuscripts of the late thirteenth century followed this new form. In no other version, however, is the description of John's wondrous deeds as enthralling and, with its eleven pages, as detailed as in the Trinity Apocalypse. /ppThe Fine Art Facsimile Edition/ppThe Trinity Apocalypse is the most magnificent specimen in a long series of English apocalypse manuscripts. This richly decorated codex with an imposing format of 432 ! 305 mm on 62 pages is published by Faksimile Verlag Luzern in a worldwide limited fine art facsimile edition of 980 hand-numbered copies. As in the original, each of the 71 large-format miniatures is framed with a border of resplendent gold. In the illustrations, areas of lavishly tooled gold and silver add striking highlights. The facsimile provides a perfect reproduction of this sumptuous palette with its fine nuances. The fine art facsimile is protected by a white cover of goat leather embossed with gold, masterly executed by the bookbinder. The front and back cover is decorated with the coat of arms of the English royal family. /ppThe Commentary as a Guide to the Manuscript/ppDr. David McKitterick, Librarian at Trinity College, is editor and co-author of the commentary. Further contributions, including a translation of the Old French text, are provided by Professors Nigel Morgan, University of Oslo, Professor Ian Short, University of London and Dr. Teresa Webber, Trinity College, Cambridge. To protect the facsimile edition, it is furnished with an acrylic slip case. /ppThe documentation portfolio contains four facsimile pages in the original format and a 16-page illustrated brochure. This portfolio is provided upon request. /p .

ARETIN, Piétro Aretino, dit l';
Capricciosi e piacevoli Ragionamenti. Nuova editione.

[REYNOLDS, Edward & others]
A seasonable exhortation of sundry ministers in London to the people of their respective congregations.
London, printed by E.M. for Samuel Gellibrand a the golden Ball in Pauls Church-yard; and Robert Gibbs at the golden Ball in Chancery Lane. 1660 4to., title printed within a typographical border, (4) + 24pp., minor soiling a staining in several leaves, but a good copy preserved in modern wrappers with printed title label on upper cover. First edition. Wing R.1276. After the death of Oliver Cromwell (Sept. 1658), Reynolds was recognised as the leader of the moderate presbyterian divines or 'reconcilers'. He and other presbyterians sought an accommodation with Richard Cromwell, and in October 1658, on the behalf of himself and other London presbyterian ministers, delivered an oral address to the new Protector. He preached at the opening session of Parliament in 1659, and throughout 1659 and 1660 his sermons to Parliament and London notables became increasingly pointed about the need for peace, unity, and moderation, codes for the restoration of the monarchy and accommodation with episcopalians. He was the prime mover behind A seasonable exhortation in January 1660, which condemned sectaries and urged an understanding with Anglicans. Throughout the summer and autumn of 1660 Reynolds continued to push for a moderate episcopacy acceptable to presbyterians and Anglicans, and he helped to draft the King's Worcester House declaration that October. He was about then made Bishop of Norwich. [Ian Atherton in ODNB].

CELLARIUS, Andreas (c.1596-1665)
[The Northern Celestial Hemisphere, with the Terrestrial Hemisphere beneath] H!misph!rium stellatum boreale cum subiecto h!misph!rio terrestri
Amsterdam: Jan Jansson, 1660. Copper-engraved celestial map, with full original colour. 19 3/4 x 23 inches. One of the finest celestial charts ever produced, from the first edition of Cellarius This composition, of great artistic elan, presents a view of the constellations of the Northern Sky superimposed over the North Pole, Europe and northern Asia. It is from the Harmonia Macrocosmica seu Atlas Universalis et Novus (Harmonious Universe or New and Universal Atlas) by Andreas Cellarius, the finest celestial atlas ever produced. According to Classical astronomy, championed by Aristotle and Ptolemy, the stars were mounted on a huge, transparent crystal sphere that was part of a geocentric system, in which all of the stars and planets revolved around the Earth. The present image was engraved in 1660 by Jan Janssonius, during the greatest era of Dutch map-making, a period that saw the perfection of the art of representing scientific ideas in a graphic form using engravings. It was reprinted by Janssonius in 1661, and again in 1708 by Gerard Valk and Petrus Schenk, who added their names to the plates. Andreas Cellarius was born in about 1596 in Neuhausen, a small town near Worms in the Rhine-Hesse region of Germany. From 1625 to 1637 Cellarius worked as a schoolmaster in Amsterdam and The Hague, and in 1637 moved to Hoorn, where he was appointed as headmaster or rector of the Latin School. He published a number of works during his lifetime, but the last and greatest was the Harmonia Macrocosmica. Cellarius resigned from his post as headmaster in early 1665 and died in Hoorn in November of the same year. Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici, Cel. 1

LOEHNEYSEN (or LOEHNEYSS), Georg Engelhard von
Bericht von Bergkwerk, wie man dieselben bawen und in guten wolfstande bringen sol
Engraved title & 16 folding engraved plates. Printed tables in the text. 11 p.l., 343 pp. Folio, cont. vellum over boards (binding a bit stained, minor browning). N.p.: n.d. [Hamburg: ca. 1660].p Second edition (1st ed.: 1617) and a very nice copy of this classic of mining and assaying; it is a treatise on the technical as well as the economic and administrative aspects of mining and metallurgy. It ranks !in importance with the works of Biringuccio, Agricola, and Ercker.!!Neville, II, p. 88!(describing the 1617 second issue). Lohneysen (1552-1625?), a nobleman at the court of the Elector Augustus of Saxony, was inspector general of the mines of Zellerfeld, Clausthal, and Andreasberg. He was an expert in mining, metallurgy, and geology. The first edition, printed at the author!s own press in Zellerfeld is very rare as most copies were destroyed during the Thirty Years War. Lohneysen designed the plates, woodcuts, and initials, employing Moses Thym as engraver of the cuts. The present second edition is a reprint of the first edition, second issue, with engravings by Joachim Wichman replacing Lohneysen!s woodcuts. The edition was not known to Ferguson or Duveen; however, it is cited by Prandtl, !Die erste Ausgabe von Lohneysz! Bericht vom Bergwerck,! in Zeitschrift Bucherfreunde 39 (1935), pp. 20-22. Two other editions with Wichman!s engravings were published in 1690. The text is celebrated for its explanation of mining regulations and for a description of the extraction of zinc (the first to be printed). Very good copy in a contemporary binding. ❧ Darmstaedter, Berg-, Probir- und Kunstbuchlein, pp. 98-99. D.S.B., VIII, pp. 464-65. Ferguson, II, pp. 42-43!(later ed. only). Partington, II, p.107. [DESCARTES, Rene. / Tr. ANON.]
A discourse of a method for the well-guiding of reason, and the discovery of truth in the sciences
Thomas Newcombe for John Holden 8vo., 4.5 X 9 cm], (7) ff., of which the first two are blank and integral, 127 pp. (verso blank). Bound in contemporary calf ruled in blind, gilt spine and edges of covers faded and rubbed. Binding a bit shaken, and joints a bit fragile. Minor toning in margin, but a remarkably fresh copy in its original binding, housed in modern bookbox. Very rare first English edition and fine copy of one of the most important works of Western Philosophy ever written, Descartes' Discourse, containing for the first time in English the phrase which is not only the conceptual cornerstone of Rationalism, generally considered the beginning of modern philosophy, but is synonymous in the cultural imagination with the very field of Philosophy: "I think, therefore, I am." This English edition was the earliest recorded in the inventory of John Locke's library (see J. Harrison/ P. Laslett, The Library of John Locke. 2nd ed #2451), and it is generally considered that Locke's encounter with the !New Philosophy' as it was known in England in the 1660's, led him to write the Essay, his philosophical masterpiece. "Descartes' purpose is to find the simple indestructible proposition which gives to the universe and thought their order and system. Three points are made: the truth of thought, when thought is true to itself (thus cogito, ergo sum), the invincible elevation of its partial state in our finite consciousness to its full state of the infinite existence of God, and to the ultimate reduction of the material universe to extension and local movement. From these central propositions in logic, metaphysics and physics came the subsequent inquiries of Locke (164 eg Essay on Human Understanding), Leibniz (177, Theodicee), and Newton (161 Principia); from them stem all modern and scientific thought." - PMM 129 (1637). Rather typically for English books of the period, the work is known in issues regarding the title page (and only the title page). These have not been well defined, and the circumstances of the translation's commissioning and publication are simply unknown: as of 2002, when a series of facsimiles of Descartes' works in English and related 17th c Cartesian writings was published, the translator of the present work remained unknown (see R. Ariew & D. Garber, Descartes' Works in Translation, vol. I, p. ix.) According to the entry in the Norman catalogue, several states of the title are known: the title of the Norman copy is !A Discourse of a Method for the well guiding of Reason', and it contains a signature marking, A4-highly exceptional if not unique for a 17th century English book; it does not contain Descartes' name on the title. This is such an egregious and uncommon error that it is most likely the sign of the earliest state. Another title gives a different spelling !for Wel-! and Discovrse'; and yet another, like the Norman copy, omits Descartes' name. OCLC lists 5 copies in American libraries: UCLA, Newberry, Northwestern, Harvard and Wisconsin. Wing adds Folger. In British libraries, Wing lists Oxford, Cambridge (King's), Patent Office (London), National Library of Scotland. Through additional searching, we have also located two copies at the BL (one with the variant title), and one at Yale (Cushing Medical Library). Remarkably, the book is sufficiently rare that it is not included in the excellent Descartes bibliography of Guillebert; it was NOT included in the Bibliotheque Nationale's anniversary exhibition celebrating the 300th anniversary of the publication of the Discours in 1937, and to this day there remains no copy of the present translation in the Bibliotheque Nationale. Finally, it is missing from (at least) two major collections of 17th century English printed books of this level of importance: the Morgan Library and the Huntington. * Wing D1129; Norman 624 (variant imprint); J. COLBERT, Nicolas, abbé.
LAS à un prélat.
Pontoise, 8 juillet 1660. In-4, 4 pages.

Merian, Matthaeus (1593-1650) And Others
Topographia Galliae; Dat Ist Een Algemeene En Naeukeurige Lant En Plaets-Beschrijvinghe Van Het Machtige Koninckrijk Vranckryck
. Amsterdam: Joost Broersz, Caspar Merian, 1660-1661-1662-1663. 4 volumes, small folio. (12 3/8 x 8 inches). Engraved titles and 325 plates and maps (some folding, some double-page) by Matthaeus Merian and others. Contemporary speckled calf, covers with the gilt-blocked armorial of Ralph Sneyd, expertly rebacked to style, spines with raised bands in 7 compartments richly tooled in gilt, red morocco lettering pieces in the second comparment. A fine Dutch-language edition of the most comprehensive illustrated guide to seventeenth century France. Merian (1593-1650), the father of engraver Matthäus the younger, and the grandfather of the painter, engraver and naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian, was born in Basel Switzerland. After a period when he visited and lived in Nancy (France), Paris and Stuttgart, and after working for Theodore de Bry for a while, he married in 1618 and settled in Frankfurt. From here he issued a great many engravings including various topographical series accompanied by text by Martin Zeiler, which together form an invaluable record of Europe during the first half of the sixteenth century. The present work, published in Amsterdam at the time of and shortly after Merian's death, is a Dutch-language version of Zeiler and Merian's Topographia Galliae, oder Beschreibung und Contrafaitung der vornehmbsten und bekantisten Oerter in...Frankreich. first published in Frankfurt between 1655 and 1661. The work, containing over 300 plates, is the most comprehensive illustrated guide to the cities and structures of seventeenth century France. The finely engraved pictures are of great importance, as they preserve many details of buildings, roadways, and cities that no longer exist or have been significantly altered. Cf Brunet V, 1530; cf. C. Schuchhard Die Zeiller-Merianschen Topographien bibliographisch beschrieben (Hamburg: 1960).
