Ingelo, Nathaniel
Bentivolio and Urania
London:: J[ohn] G[rismond] for Richard Marriot,, 1660-1664.. First Edition.. Old sheep, hinges cracked. Lacks t.p. for second volume; over seven pages of contemporary notes on the blanks of volume 1. Contemporary signature on t.p. of Thomas Cotton (see below), later signatures of Ros. Mills, and large calligraphic ownership on end blank of vol. 2, "Elizabeth Bagnall",dated 1750.. Folio. 2 vols.. T.p in red and black including a flower device. Ingelo, Nathaniel (1620/21!1683), author, was born at Bristol.#11;"Ingelo's major literary project was Bentivolio and Urania, published in two instalments (1660, 1664), a best-selling work of religious and moral instruction in the form of a fictional narrative. The work is dedicated to William Brereton, the eldest son of the civil war general. Bentivolio and Urania was conceived in terms of the Platonic doctrine of the heterogeneity of the soul set out in Henry More's long poem Psychozoia (1641). Rochester mocked the platitudes of Ingelo's satire, which urges a return to the traditional humanist marriage of learning and piety, but this is an indication of its popularity. There were four editions between 1660 and 1682." [ODNB]#11;Sir Thomas Cotton, the second baronet 1594-1662, Sir Robert's only surviving child, made great efforts for the restitution of his father's library.... Sir Thomas was the intimate friend and correspondent of Sir John Eliot, and was entrusted by his influence with the representation of St. Germans (Eliot's native place) in the third of Charles I's parliaments. He was M.P. for Huntingdon in the short parliament of 1640, but took no active part in politics. Like his father, Sir Thomas gave scholars free access to his library. Wing I175 & I179. ESTC r16505 & r223432. Halkett & Laing I,192.

WINSTANLEY, William
ENGLAND'S WORTHIES. SELECT LIVES OF THE MOST EMINENT PERSONS
1660. 2. WINSTANLEY, William. ENGLAND'S WORTHIES. SELECT LIVES OF THE MOST EMINENT PERSONS FROM CONSTANTINE THE GREAT, TO THE DEATH OF OLIVER CROMWELL LATE PROTECTOR. London, Printed for Nath. Brooke, at the Sign of the Angel in Cornhill, 1660. First edition. Engraved title-page frontispiece with each of the forty-seven worthies shown in a medallion portrait. Printer's device on title-page. Collation: A8,a8,B-2R8,2S4. 16.5 cm. [32],613, pp. + [19] publisher's advertisement. In an early full leather binding, which is rather parched and edgeworn. The first two signatures have a shallow inkstain at the top margin which decreases over 32 pp. It occasionally covers a few words in the top line of type; however, because the ink is transparent, it doesn't completely obscure the type. There are some leaves near the end which show some very faint dampstainging; but the text is clean for the most part. A few pages are misnumbered. Very good overall. (Wing W3058). Winstanley (1628?-1698), better known by his pseudonym of 'Poor Robin' as a writer of almanacs and chapbooks (D.N.B.), was a compiler with a dubious reputation who 'borrowed without stint, and without acknowledgment also, from his predecessors' (Wood, Athena Oxon. ed. Bliss, iv. 763). Despite his poor reputation, 'we are obliged to him for many notices of persons and things which are recorded only in his works' (Granger, Biogr. Hist. of Engl. 5th ed. v. 271). England's Worthies is noteworthy because, though Winstanley was a staunch royalist after the Restoration, it is free from partisan spirit (Brydges). Rare.

"ARETIN, Piétro Aretino, dit l';"
Capricciosi e piacevoli Ragionamenti. Nuova editione.

Scarce first edition of this 17th-century survey of Italian painting, and a valuable document for developing Baroque "gusto" by a cultivated amateur. Scannelli follows Mancini's tripartite division of Italian schools-Roman, Venetian and Lombard, and in an age in which microcosms were everywhere, he compared the whole of Italian painting to a body, likening Corregio to the brain, Titian to the heart, Raphael to the liver (!), and Veronese to the organs of reproduction. According to the Dictionary of Art, Il Microcosmo "stands alongside the works of Mario Boschini (La carta del navegar pittoresco, Venice, 1660) and of Luigi Pellegrino Scaramuccia (Le finezze dei penelli italiani, Padua, 1674), both of whom quoted him. Scannelli's treatise represents a reaction against the notion, formulated by Giorgio Vasari, that the art of Florence was pre-eminent throughout Italy. He reevaluated the Lombard-Emilian school, led by Correggio, seeing in it an ideal synthesis of the finest achievements of the Venetian (Titian) and of the Roman-Tuscan (Raphael) schools... In taste, he showed classicist inclinations, modified by a liking for vivacity and naturalism, qualities well represented in the art of his ideal painter, Correggio" (Franco Bernabei, DA XXVIII.33-34). Little is known about the author, save that he was a priest and a physician, that he served at the court of Mantua until Francesco I d'Este died, and that he traveled to Milan, Rome and Venice. * Besterman, Old Art Books, p. 93; Schlosser-Magnino p. 614 (rather harsh elsewhere); Cicognara 204; Hollis BAL 6360 (specifying frontispiece and 18 preliminaries); not in Berlin Katalog.

A Passion for Government: the Life of Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough
Clarendon Press. New in new dust jacket. Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, was a woman with a `passion for government': a compulsion to wield power not only in her own family but in public affairs as well. She was the favourite of Queen Anne, the devoted wife and political associate of the Queen's most powerful subject, the passionate ally or bitter enemy of most of the leading public figures of her day, and in her widowhood the effective head of one of England's great families. Despite her stormy relationship with the architect Vanbrugh, she played a major role in the building of Blenheim Palace, one of England's most splendid houses. Born in 1660, she succeeded during the course of her long life in overcoming many of the contempo...

I (including regular and added title-pages) with tiny spots of worming; slightly larger sections of same to inner margins of some subsequent leaves; a number of pages in both volumes with scattered spots of worming, touching letters but not affecting sense. Light waterstaining to outer margins of some leaves. One leaf in vol. II separated. = Significant and attractive.. Folio (32 cm, 12.6"). 2 vols. I: Add. engr. t.-p., [6], xl, 559, [1] pp.; 1 plt. II: [2], 558, [2] pp. . First edition: Important philosophical treatise on conscience, casuistry, and Christian ethics, written by the Bishop of Down and Connor. The controversialist Taylor, crowned "the Shakespeare of divines" by Ralph Waldo Emerson, was the subject during his career of a number of accusations of crypto-popery, but the present work - the first of its kind - was designed as a "complete protestant answer to the many Roman Catholic manuals of casuistry" (according to the Oxford DNB online) and intended to provide an authoritative Anglican reference on the subject.#11; The portrait of the author was engraved by Pierre Lombard, while the added engraved title-page is unsigned. Each of the four books here (in two volumes) has a separate title-page; the main title-pages are printed in black and ruled in red. The text is in English, Greek, and Latin. A printed addenda slip is affixed to the final text page of vol. II, above the catalogue of books sold by Richard Royston. Leaf L6 in vol. II is a cancel (and separated).#11; Provenance: Vol. I added title-page recto with inked ownership inscription dated 1781 ("T. Moore"); vol. II front fly-leaf with inked ownership inscription dated 1696 ("Guilel. Rayner") and another (of "T. Moore's") dated 1781.

Sein bedeutendstes Werk ist der "Ductor dubitantium or the Rule of Conscience in all her general measures" (London. 1660).Jeremy Taylor (1613-1667), Anglican bishop, who wrote some of the greatest devotional works in the English language. Born in Cambridge, England, Taylor was baptized on August 15, 1613. Following studies at the University of Cambridge, he was ordained in 1633. Because of his eloquence, he was granted a fellowship at All Souls College, University of Oxford, in 1635. In that same year, he was made chaplain to King Charles I. While serving in that capacity Taylor came under suspicion because of his friendship with Christopher Davenport, a Franciscan chaplain to Queen Henrietta Maria. A sermon preached in his own defense reasserted his opposition to Roman Catholicism. Taylor joined the Royalist army as chaplain when civil war broke out in 1642, and after a Royalist defeat in Wales (1645) he was briefly imprisoned. Later the same year, he became private chaplain to Lord Carbery at his estate, Golden Grove. There Taylor produced his greatest works, including A Discourse of the Liberty of Prophesying (1646), a call for charity and tolerance The Golden Grove (1655), a collection of daily prayers and the Unum Necessarium (1655), a work on sin and repentance. His two famous books of devotion, The Rule and Exercises of Holy Living (1650) and The Rule and Exercises of Holy Dying (1651), are considered classics. Taylor intended them to act as guides for those not served by local clergy. In 1660 Taylor was appointed bishop of Down and Connor-and later Dromore-Ireland, and vice-chancellor of Trinity College, Dublin. In the same year he published his Ductor Dubitantium, or the Rule of Conscience, an extensive manual of moral theology. Although he faced strong opposition from local Presbyterians and Roman Catholics, Taylor refused to compromise his stand against non-Anglicans. He died in Lisburn, Ireland, on August 13, 1667 renaissancetruh -

Hyginus Gromaticus and Polybius Megalopolitanus
De Castris Romanis, Quae exstant. Cum notis & animadversionibus, quibus accedunt dissertationes aliquot de re eadem militari populi Romani, R.H.S
Amsterdam:: Joost Pluymer,, 1660.. Full old vellum, leather label (worn) on spine with title in gilt lettering. Blue speckled edges. Very light browning, mostly around edges, and foxing. Frontispiece has clean tear and small hole only effecting border. Paper flaw in I1 creates a notch in bottom margin, but no effect on text. Small hole in Hh3 with slight loss, but text remains quite legible. Page 238 labelled as 138. #11;Text in Latin. This is the Spaulding copy with note inserted.. 4to.. Engraved frontispiece, printer's device on t.p. Four fold-out engraving, engraved initials, head and tail pieces. Polybius (ca.200-post 118 B.C.), the great historian of Rome's rise to world power - especially through the Punic Wars - was a Greek of Megalopolis who with 1,000 other emminent Achaeans was deported to Rome for political investigations. While at Rome, he became friend and mentor to Scipio Aemilianus, probably accompanying the latter to Spain and Africa, and crossing the Alps into Italy while on the trail of Hannibal. As his concept of history prized the historian's acquaintance with the scene of historical events and personal political experience, there is good reason to believe that the excerpts presented in the present volume are for the most part first hand accounts. #11;The first work offered here has been falsely attributed to a Hyginus Gromaticus, a surveyer flourishing under the reign of Trajan, but the author appears to be a third century man in reality. The work itself, a handbook on castramentation, tends to be more theoretical than practical. STCN 166004. Schweiger I, 466.Spaulding and Karpinski 199 (with incorrect date of 1690).

More belonged to that little band of Christian Platonists which was formed at Cambridge in the middle of the seventeenth century, and the distinctive traits of their school of thought are perhaps best brought out in his writings. The Ooccult science,O of which such men as Van Helmont and Greatrakes were in More's time the apostles, had a singular fascination for him; but he was saved from its extravagances by the firmly implanted conviction which tinges all his life and all his writings that holiness was the way to knowledge, Obeing well advised,O he says, Oboth by the dictates of my own conscience and the clear information of those holy oracles which we all deservedly reverence, that God reserves his choicest secrets for the purest minds.O#11;"this work caused John Butler to publish his book "Agiastrologia' which is written in favour of the Art, and More replied to it.."
