Antoine Bertier Paris: 1660 FIRST EDITION. This history of Cardinal Richelieu is by the French historian Antoine Aubery. The son of a Parisian landlord, Aubery became a lawyer in the French Parliament. Very scholarly, he was one of the official writers and apologists to the Court of France in the 18th century. Aubery was the author of many historical works, including Histoire générale des cadinaux (1642) and Mémoires pour servir à l’histoire du cardinal duc de Richelieu (1660). The fine, large (305 x 218 mm) engraved frontispiece of Richelieu was executed by Aegid [Giles] Rousselet (1610-1686). The Cardinal de Richelieu was often known by the title of the King’s “Chief Minister” or “First Minister”. As a result, he is sometimes considered to be the world’s first Prime Minister, in the modern sense of the term. He sought to consolidate royal power and crush domestic factions. By restraining the power of the nobility, he transformed France into a strong, centralized state. His chief foreign policy objective was to check the power of the Austro-Spanish Habsburg dynasty. Although he was a cardinal, he did not hesitate to make alliances with Protestant rulers in attempting to achieve this goal. His tenure was marked by the Thirty Years’ War that engulfed Europe. Richelieu was also famous for his patronage of the arts; most notably, he founded the Académie Française, the learned society responsible for matters pertaining to the French language. Richelieu is also known by the sobriquet l’Éminence rouge (“the Red Eminence”), from the red shade of a cardinal’s vestments and the style “eminence” as a cardinal. Marie-Nicolas Bouillet & Alexis Chassang (ed.), Dictionary of universal history and geography, 1878. hardcover Large 4to. [20], 628, [26] pp. Engraved frontis., red and black title-page with large printer’s device. Contemporary full brown mottled calf, raised bands, gilt-stamped spine panels and title; front hinge beginning to split, cords holding firm, extremities scratched, corners showing. Contemporary ink ownership marks on title-page. Very good. 2

The Book of Common Prayer [London, 1663] / The New Testament, London 1660 / The Whole Book of Psalms, London 1661. Bound together in a contemporary "sombre" binding
London: Henry Hills and John Field, 1660-1663. (BINDING) 8vo. Woodcut of the Royal Arms of Charles II on verso of final leaf of the Common Prayer. Contemporary black morocco "sombre" binding, elaborately tooled in blind on upper and lower covers with a central lozenge cartouche made from double impressions of two separate tools, the same tools being used to decorate the four corners, the design surrounded by floral sprays, spine of six raised banks with floral tooling in each of the seven compartments, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, a.e.g. Front joint repaired, skilful minor restoration to the corners by Sotheran, overall a very attractive binding. Lacks first three leaves of Book of Common Prayer. Herbert 669 or 670 (with OT) . A handsome volume, made even more interesting by the contemporary ownership inscription "Elizabeth Maynard 1663" on the verso of the New Testament title page, and, in her handwriting on the blank recto of the Psalms, "What Children I have christened [there follows a list of nine names] Innocents day 1665" plus additional notations of subsequent christenings in 1665 and 1667. As the "Children" included a Mrs Cooper, it may be that the word is used in an ecclesiastical sense; and it is interesting to conjecture what role Elizabeth Maynard played in the ceremony in these years following the Restoration of 1660

» in Bulletin du Bibliophile, annee 1895, p. 161-163.
Elysium Britannicum, Or the Royal Gardens
University of Pennsylvania Press. New Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. In a letter to Sir Thomas Browne about his proposed magnum opus on gardens, John Evelyn stated his purpose: "to refine upon some particulars, especially concerning the ornaments of Gardens, which I shal endeavor so to handle that persons of all conditions and faculties, which delight in Gardens, may therein encounter something for their owne advantage. "In his "Elysium Britannicum, or The Royal Gardens", Evelyn indeed produced a rich document, an assemblage of the horticultural knowledge and wisdom of the seventeenth century. An intriguing intellectual whom many have called a virtuoso, Evelyn was a garden designer, a noted author and translator of garden books, and a founding member of the Royal Society in 1660, where experimental science was at the heart of intellectual debate. Interlacing in his work practical, literary, and philosophical approaches to landscape architecture, Evelyn created the first large-scale encyclopedic work on the science and art of gardening. Evelyn never saw his great work published. Until now, the entire "Elysium Britannicum, or The Royal Gardens" has never appeared in print. In an impressive transcription, John E. Ingram makes the document— of which only a single folio volume remains— accessible to a wide range of scholars. Complete with Evelyn's extensive marginalia, interlineations, and tipped-in addenda, the manuscript is expertly organized by Ingram to preserve the meaningful complexity of Evelyn's original. "The Elysium Britannicum, or The Royal Gardens" was composed over a period of forty years, and Ingram's transcriptionreveals the challenge Evelyn faced in writing in— and for— a rapidly evolving intellectual culture. The work also displays many of Evelyn's own illustrations, including drawings of garden layouts, diagrams of inventions for plant and tree cultiv
