[Waller, Hardress, Sir]: [Finch, Heneage, Earl of Nottingham]: [Regicide Trials]:
AN EXACT AND MOST IMPARTIAL ACCOMPT OF THE INDICTMENT, ARRAIGNMENT, TRIAL, AND JUDGMENT (ACCORDING TO LAW) OF TWENTY NINE REGICIDES, THE MURTHERERS OF HIS LATE SACRED MAJESTY OF MOST GLORIOUS MEMORY
|
London: Printed for Andrew Crook...and Edward Powel, 1660.. [2],287pp. [actually 297pp.]. Lacks pp. 149- 152. Turn-of-the-century gray boards, paper spine label. Light wear to edges and joints. Bookplate on front pastedown. Minor old paper repairs to title page and last leaf. Generally very good internally, with very little tanning or foxing and no trimmed text. This important compilation of court records, etc., relating to the regicide of Charles I was published immediately following the presentation of the cases at the beginning of the Restoration. Aside from their obvious importance to English monarchical and legal history, the regicide trials have particular significance to New Haven history since three of the "murtherers" fled to New Haven following the restoration of Charles II, becoming namesakes of the three central avenues: John Dixwell, Edward Whalley, and William Goffe.

HISTORIA ET ANTIQUITATES UNIVERSITATES OXONIENSIS. 2 volumes
|
Oxonii [Oxford]: e Theatro Sheldoniano, 1674. Folio, (420x275mm), [8],414; 447,[3]p. Lacking the plates but with the added engraved title-page to volume 1 present, and with 3 engraved dedcation leaves at the start of volume 2, together with a number of engraved headpieces, initials letters and text vignettes. lightly browned. Contemporary calf, worn and the joints broken. Armorial bookplate of L'Abbe de Rothelin. 'Wood had been at work of his history of Oxfordshire since 1660. He left his own account of his dealing with [Dr John] Fell, who wanted the history of the University only, and in Latin. He smoothed Wood's path to important documents in London, but annoyed him by censoring the text, which he [later] got translated. Fell paid for this and the costs of printing... The University paid Wood £100 for the copy and £50 for his extra trouble. It was a handsome book, dedicated by the undertakers... to the King. The engraved title significantly shows the King handing a charter to the kneeling person of the University, who offers him the book in return; in the background the [Sheldonian] theatre can be seen. BURTON, Robert
Anatomy of Melancholy
|
1660. [BURTON, Robert] Democritus Junior. The Anatomy of Melancholy. What it is, with all the kinds, causes, symptomes, prognostickes, & severall cures of it. In three Partitions, with their severall Sections, members, and subsections! With a Satyricall Preface. London: Henry Cripps, 1660. Folio, 18th-century full brown calf gilt rebacked, raised bands, black morocco spine label, marbled edges; pp.(10), 78, (6), 723 [1], (8). $3800. Seventh edition of this early description of the state of depression, "destined to become the most frequently reprinted psychiatric text," with "several considerable additions by [Burton's] own hand" and wonderful engraved allegorical title page. "The first psychiatric encyclopedia" to be written in any language (Norman 381) and "one of the most fascinating books in literature" (DNB), Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy helped to popularize what had previously been a mysterious and largely unexplored topic, the mental state that has come to be called "depression." Burton elaborately divides the Anatomy into four main sections and numerous subsections, each of which deals with the causes, symptoms, and cures of various types of melancholy. "His approach to mental illness was so advanced for his time that his book had no immediate predecessors and no immediate successors" (Alexander & Selesnick, 102). "This great book was destined to become the most frequently reprinted psychiatric text! Nearly one thousand authors are cited, about half of them medical. It was so popular that five editions appeared in Burton's lifetime and three more in the 17th century" (Hunter & MacAlpine, 94). First issued in small quarto in 1621, it was "a work once almost forgotten, but which owed its revival to the inordinate praise of Dr. Johnson, who observed that it 'was the only book that ever took him out of bed two hours sooner than he wished to rise" (Lowndes I, 328). "On every page is the impress of a singularly deep and original genius" (DNB). With "Table" at rear; decorative woodcut headpieces and initials. Wing B6183. See Garrison & Morton 4918.1; Grolier 100, 18. Bookplate of Arthur Howe Holdsworth, last governor of Dartmouth Castle. Text generally fine, moderate edge-wear to first two leaves. A very desirable copy.

Contents clean and tight, small contemporary inscription to the front blank which in un-attached, small booklate of the Bristol Education Society to the front Paste-down dated 1701, discreet hand written number in red to top right corner of title page. Cambridge University Press. Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. The period 1660-1780 saw major changes in the relationship between religion and ethics in English thought. In this first part of an important two-volume study, Isabel Rivers examines the rise of Anglican moral religion and the reactions against it expressed in nonconformity, dissent and methodism. Her study investigates the writings that grew out of these movements, combining a history of the ideas of individual thinkers (including both prominent figures such as Bunyan and Wesley and a range of lesser writers) with analysis of their characteristic terminology, techniques of persuasion, literary forms and styles. The intellectual and social milieu of each movement is explored, together with the assumed audiences for whom the texts were written. The book provides an accessible, wide-ranging and authoritative new interpretation of a crucial period in the development of early modern religious and moral thought. ISBN10: 0521383404.
