*R Infimes piq"res. Les deux derniers feuillets ont ete remontes. Tres agreable exemplaire. OCCASION

Geoffrey Beard
Upholsterers and Interior Furnishing in England, 1530-1840
USA: Yale University Press. Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. This richly illustrated book is a history of the upholstery trade in Britain over three hundred years. It surveys the changing styles that affected this art form, the craftsmen who made the furniture and the kings and courtiers who purchased it, and the events — from coronations to funerals — at which upholstery played a leading role. Geoffrey Beard, an eminent authority on the lives and work methods of craftsmen in the decorative arts, brings his wide knowledge of the historical background of furniture making and usage in England to bear on this new branch of furniture history. Drawing on the texts of 44 important contemporary manuscripts, he moves chronologically, setting the activities of upholsterers and their patrons against the wider panoply of English history. He discusses, for example, the early upholstery done on the instructions of the important agency controlling work for the crown, the Great Wardrobe; the archaic traditions of the London craft guilds that grounded the upholsterer's work prior to the restoration of Charles II in 1660; the extensive refurbishing of royal palaces after 1660; the sudden rise in popularity of needleworked upholstery in the beginning of the eighteenth century; the change from rococo style to neoclassicism in the 1760s; the introduction of Egyptian motifs in the early nineteenth century; and the subsequent change to the ornamental excesses of Gothic, Louis Quatorze, or one of the fashionable revivals. With its 376 illustrations, 220 of which are in color, this volume is an authoritative and gorgeous chronicle of the production of fine furnishings in England. The book has been awarded the 1996 prize by the Confederation of InternationalAntique Dealers (CINOA) ISBN10: 0300071353.

Hoffmann, Friedrich:
Friedrich Hoffmann (1660-1742) (also 'Hofmann') was born on 19 February 1660 in Halle, where he also died on 12 November 1742. Called 'the second Hippocrates' and the 'Aesculapius Hallensis', he was among the most widely read medical authors of the eighteenth century, and is best known for his systematic discussion of the iatromechanical model of medicine - similar to what Hermann Boerhaave (1668-1738) was developing at Leiden - that views the human body as a hydraulic machine wholly governed by mechanical laws."Despite his admiration of Leibniz, Hoffmann borrowed few ideas from him, rejecting his doctrine of pre-established harmony in favor of a version of physical influx between the rational and the sensitive soul (De fato physico, 1724). Hoffmann argued that Leibniz's doctrine, apart from remaining unproven, involved a double determinism by denying the rational soul and the body the ability to affect each other, and as such was inconsistent with God's goodness (De potentia, 1729). Hoffmann was convinced of this real connection, however inscrutable it may be (Exercitatio, 1728)." The Dictionary of Eighteenth Century German Philosophers, edited by Manfred Kuehn and Heiner Klemme

Lincoln Cathedral
Catalogue of the Wren Library of Lincoln Cathedral
Cambridge University Press. New Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. There was certainly a collection of books at Lincoln Cathedral in the twelfth century, and its origins were perhaps earlier still; but little interest seems to have been taken in building up the library until the second half of the seventeenth century, with the appointment in 1660 of the bibliophile Michael Honywood, a Fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge, as Dean. The present Wren Library's collection of some 8, 000 printed books is based largely on his private library, bequeathed to the Dean and Chapter of Lincoln on his death in 1681. Much of Honywood's library was put together during seventeen years of voluntary exile in the Low Countries from 1643. It is consequently rich in sixteenth-and seventeenth-century continental literature, including rare Italian plays, European pamphlets and broadsides interpreting the English political situation, a collection of Dutch ballads, and many religious books and tracts. The splendid English collection includes 1600 STC items, and 2, 650 printed between 1641 and 1700, over 100 of which are not recorded in Wing. In addition there are some 100 incunables. This complete catalogue of books printed before 1801 is the first since 1859, and offers the detail and precision required by modern scholars, bibliographers and libraries. Titles are given at some length to indicate subject coverage, and format, pagination, and details of illustrations are recorded. The catalogue notes which books belonged to Honywood, whose importance as a collector is thus established. A set of concordances keyed to the main entries covers STC, Wing, Adams, and Goff. Numerous putti all around the hemisphere. Published in 1660 by Joannes Janssonius in Amsterdam, the Atlas Coelestis is the only Dutch celestial atlas produced in the heydays of Dutch cartography.       1660. RUSCONI, Gio. Antonio. I Dieci libri D'Archittura. [12], 148 pp. Illustrated with more than 150 fine engraved woodcuts in the text, half-page and full-page. Small folio, 285 x 195, bound in contemporary vellum, rebacked. Venetia: Apresso il Nicolini, 1660. |~||~||~||~||~| Second Edition, first published in 1590, of one of the greatest illustrated Italian architecture books of the sixteenth century, with the addition of Bernardino Stramegioli's chapter on sundials. Rusconi (ca.1520-1587), Palladio's collaborator during the latter's residence in Venice participated in the design of the Doge's Palace and the Palazzo Publico in Brescia. He was also the sole architect for several palaces and churches in Venice. The Rusconi woodcuts are practically unsurpassed in their brilliance and clarirty. Most of them were reused from the first edition, but some were re-cut. They incorporate a wealth of detail, from basic construction material to foliage and flowers for ornamentation. The woodcuts illustrate canons of proportion, cross-sections of bridges, the orders of columns, stairways and walls, ansd hydraulic and mechanical apparati. There are also woodcuts of laborers performing construction tasks. The superb quality of this work can be traced in part to the use Rusconi made of the Gioliti woodcutters in translating his drawings onto the blocks. Overall a fresh, unwashed copy. PLATT, Sir Hugh
The Garden of Eden Or, an accurate description of all the flowers and fruits now growing in England, with particular rules how to advance their nature and growth, as well in seeds and hearbs, as the secret ordering of trees and plants. [BOUND WITH] PLATT, Sir Hugh. The Second Part of the Garden of Eden. Or an accurate description of all flowers and fruits growing in England; with particular rules how to advance their nature and growth, as well in seeds and herbs, as the secret ordering of trees and plants [.] never before printed.
William Leake, London. -1660 [.] 1659 - Fifth edition of the first work, first edition of the second. 2 works in 1, 8vo (9 x 14cm), 175, [1]; [16], 159 [1]pp., with original initial blank, first work with small marginal repair to F2, bookplate, endpapers with old notes, full green morocco, boards panelled and bordered with elaborate scroll and flower work, spine decorated, gilt with compartments, a.e.g. and gauffered, an excellent copy. Both works are uncommon, particularly in this premium condition. Platt's work was initially titled 'Floraes paradise' (London, 1608), however subsequent editions, organised by Charles Bellingham, bore the title 'The Garden of Eden'. Bellingham drew the material for the second part from Plat's unpublished notes. Sir Hugh Platt (1552-1608) is primarily remembered for his studies concerning agriculture and inventions. Richard Weston was to describe him as 'the most ingenious husbandman of the age he lived in'. Much of his later life was devoted to agricultural investigations, 'The Garden of Eden' being his chief work on the subject. He "wrote his book from his own practical experience as well as from information supplied to him from other gardeners. Platt, unlike many authors of his day, freely acknowledged any help given to him" (Henrey). Within these two small works is contained a plethora of advice concerning all manner of gardening matters, from fruit and flower cultivation to seed management and dealing with pests. "112. How to destroy caterpillers. Make a ring of tar towards the bottom of the tree, then hang a bag full of pismires by a cord in the top of the tree, so as they may easily get out, and the ants when they cannot get down by reason of the tar, rather then they will starve for hunger, will eat up all the caterpillers" ( The Second Part, pp.151-2). Platt was something of a champion of English wines, both parts of this work treating of the cultivation of vines. In the second, he writes extensively of "means how we may of our English grapes purchase an excellent good wine" (pp. 56-68). Platt's own wine, made from grapes grown at his garden in Bethnal Green, received commendation both from the French ambassador and Sir Francis Vere, and the author planned to publish a separate work detailing his gleanings on English viticulture. Provenance: a pasted-in note records that this was the Marquis of Blandford's copy, sold as lot 3229 in the White Knights sale of 1819, and also attributes the binding to the famous bookbinder Roger Payne (1739-1797), however, though the binding is charming and does exhibit some qualities of that famous artisan it would appear to be have been bound slightly later than his period of activity. I. Henrey 296; Wing P2387. ESTC records 8 copies. II. Henrey 297; Wing P2392; ESTC records 12 copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Enlarged and revised second edition of this voluminous publication, one of the earliest scholarly handbooks on Islamic history and religion, first published in 1651 The eminent Zurich scholar J. H. Hottinger offers a vast compendium of all material availabled at the time dealing with the life of Muhammed, the Islam and its sects, the pre-islamic Arab religions etc. With a great number of citations in Arab, Hebrew, and Greek. Interest in the Near East generated a range of scholarly investigations typical of the Enlightenment. In 1651, Hottinger published first his Historia Orientalis, followed in 1697 by Barthélemy d'Herbelot's celebrated Bibliotheque orientale. Hottinger, the greatest scholar in 17th century Switzerland, had studied at Geneva, Groningen and Leiden, and after visiting France and England he was appointed professor of church history in Zurich in 1642. In 1643 the chair of Hebrew was added at the Carolinum, and in 1653 Hottinger became professor of logic, rhetoric, and theology. He gained such a reputation as an Oriental scholar that the elector palatine in 1655 apponted him professor of Oriental languages and biblical criticism at Heidelberg. In 1661 he returned to his home town, where he was chosen principal of the university (Carolinum). Hottinger was drowned together with three of his children by the upsetting of a boat while crossing the river Limmat after he already had accepted an invitation to succeed Johann Hornbeck as professor in the Leiden university. - Lighlty browned and foxed in places, ta well-preserved copy, old owner's entry on first pastedown. - Contemporary vellum with flaps, ms. title on spine. la

Saffroy (2158 - 2165) a repertorie huit editions.
