La Chambre, Marin Cureau De (1594-1669)
Art De Connoistre Les Hommes
1660. Acceptable Amsterdam: Chez Iacques le Jeune, 1660. 1st Edition. [8]+431+[7]pp. Engraved title-page. 12mo. Attractively rebound in later 20th century calf-backed marbled boards with morocco spine label and raised spine bands. Lacks the last leaf of the table-of-contents at the rear, else an attractive copy in a pleasant modern binding. Uncommon. Translated into English in 1665 as The Art How to Know Men. Wellcome II, p. 419; Caillet 2728. 10.0 ounces = 285 grams. 5.9 x 3.6 x 1.0 inches = 14.8 x 9 x 2.5cm. An important 17th century French work on character. Both this and La Chambre's Les caracteres des passions (Amsterdam: 1658-63) are significant period contributions to psychology. Writing in an age when science and pseudoscience still weren't separate, La Chambre wrote works on the passions, chiromancy, light and rainbows, and animal rationality. La Chambre was physician to Chancellor Seguier, as well as to Louis XIII & Louis XIV. He was one of the early members of the French Academy in 1635, and later in 1666 one of the first members of the Academy of Sciences. He had been a protoge of Cardinal Richelieu, who approved the fact that as early as 1634 he chose to publish in French rather than Latin.

Goethe, Johann Wolfgang:
Band 15/I und 15/II: Italienische Reise. Herausgegeben von Christoph Michel und Hans-Georg Dewitz. 2 Bände.
      - Frankfurt am Main: Deutscher Klassiker Verlag, 1660 Seiten, Originalleinen mit Schutzumschlag. Kl. Einriß in einem Schutzumschlag, sonst sehr gut.Originalpreis 144 Euro. ISBN 3618603509 [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Making arrangements for a visit to Boston, in an autograph letter, signed17 January 1898, to "Mr. Ropes."
8vo. Two pages, approximately 100 words, in part: "Unless you have contemplated other arrangements,I should like to reserve my lunch hour for friends or other engagements in Boston as I cannot foresee just how my time may be occupied with them." Mahan saw duty in the Civil War as a young naval officer and continued that career for two decades before publishing his groundbreaking analysis The Influence of Sea Power upon History, 1660-1783 in 1890 (One Hundred Influential American Books 93: "The first philosophy of sea power"). His intentions were here imparted to John Codman Ropes (1836-1899), also a military historian, published the influential Campaign of Waterloo and a number of volumes on the American Civil War. Folded as for mailing. Very good. (1233)

Petrelli Lucarini Tolomeo
Angoli in pergamena. VENNER, TOBIAS
VIA RECTA AD VITAM LONGAM. OR, A TREATISE WHERE IN THE RIGHT WAY AND BEST MANNER OF LIVING FOR ATTAINING TO A LONG AND HEALTHFULL LIFE, IS CLEARLY DEMONSTRATED AND PUNCTUALLY APPLIED TO EVERY AGE AND CONSTITUTION OF BODY. . . . LONDON: ABEL ROPER, 1660.
Later edition 4to. [vi], 404, [8] pp., including index and leaf of publisher's advertisements. With an engraved frontispiece portrait of Venner at age 85, lacking in many copies. Woodcut headpiece and inititals. Contemporary calf, rebacked; an excellent copy. The "fourth impression" according to the title page, "amplified with many profitable additions." However, it is a later edition, this work being extremely popular and reprinted many times after the first edition of 1620. One of the most popular books on diet and health of this period, Venner (1577-1660) did a great deal to create an understanding throughout the general population of the significance of healthy diet and habits. He speaks to everyday issues from how much meat should be consumed, and how it should be prepared, to the use of tobacco and alcohol and the effect on the body.

LAURENBERG, JOHANNES.
Græcia antiqua. Edidit Samuel Pufendorf.
      - Amsterdam, Apud Joannem Janssonium. 1660. Oblong-4to. Contemporary full calf, spine with traces of wear. (8), 62, (2) pp. With 31 fullpage engraved maps and 7 textual engravings. Title-page neatly restored and first 4 pages with repairs in lower right corner not affecting text. With the bookplate of H. Coyet-Torup in Sweden. Rare and charming atlas of Ancient Greece with maps by Lauremberg, edited by Pufendorf. Most expositions of Pufendorf overlook the fact that the famous Heidelberg-professor not only worked within the fields of law and history of law, but that he was also very much engaged in philology and classics. In fact, Pufendorf taught classes and gave lectures on philology at in Heidelberg, and he also been involved in publications in this field, namely as the editor of works by Lauremberg and Meursius. As such, Pufendorf came to be connected to an important and long philosophical tradition at the Heidelberg University. The present charming and well executed atlas thus stands at the centre of this subject field of Pufendorf.Johannes Laurenberg (1590-1658) was a mathematician born in Rostock in Germany. He was a professor of poetry in Rostock and after that professor of mathematics in Sorø, Denmark, where he worked till he died. In 1631 the Danish King Christian IV commissioned Laurenberg to do the mapping of Denmark. For the next 16 years he worked on this project and corresponded with the king. The work was never finished, though, and in 1645 the king lost his patience and fired Laurenberg. In 1647 Janssonius published his Atlas Novus, which contained two maps from Denmark in high quality. It is most likely that Laurenberg drew these maps. See Bramsen, pp. 68-72. Shirley II, p. 1557.

Josef Köstlbauer: Quellenautopsie "Martin Meyer (1659)", in: Europabegriffe und Europavorstellungen im 17. Jahrhundert. KIRCHER, Athanasius
Iter Extaticum Coeleste...hac secunda editione Praelusionibus & Scholiis illustratum...a P. Gaspare Schotto...Accessit...Iter Exstaticum Terrestre, & Synopsis Mundi Subterranei
Added engraved title, finely engraved arms on verso of printed title, & 12 engraved plates. 12 p.l. (incl. added title), 689, [18] pp. Thick 4to, cont. sheep-backed speckled boards (minor foxing), spine richly gilt. Wurzburg: Heirs of J.A. & W.J. Endter, 1660. Second edition, enlarged and edited by the author's friend and disciple Gaspar Schott, of Kircher's only work devoted entirely to astronomy; the first edition was published in 1656 with the title Itinerarium exstaticum. "Itinerarium exstaticum is one of Kircher's most curious works. He wrote the treatise in the form of a narrative in which a certain Theodidactus -- Kircher himself -- is caught up in a dream-vision or an ecstatic journey and is guided through the heavens by a spirit named Cosmiel...In the first dialogue, Kircher recounts the journey to the moon, which he finds scarred with mountains and craters, contrary to the Aristotelian view. He flies on to Venus, which he discovers is made of the four elements, and so on to each of the other planets and through the region of the fixed stars. The sun itself has blemishes, Kircher proclaims. He himself had seen sunspots through a telescope several years earlier... "Kircher rejected the Aristotelian and Ptolemaic cosmologies in favor of that of Tycho Brahe (1546-1601), who argued that the sun orbits the earth and is in turn orbited by the planets and the fixed stars. The Tychonian system was adopted by most of Kircher's fellow Jesuits, since it allowed them to maintain geocentric orthodoxy while espousing, at least in part, the new, more scientific heliocentricity advocated by the Copernicans. Kircher broaches this subject more directly in the second dialogue, where he deals with the creations of the earth, its position in the universe, its various characteristics and limitations, and finally, its eventual destruction. To support his views Kircher cites scriptural and scientific authorities in his conclusion. Among the latter are the astronomer Johannes Hevelius, the influential astronomer and meteorologist Gottfried Wendelin, Galileo, and other less-orthodox scientists of his day. This scientific, religious, and semi-mystical work testifies to Kircher's dubious poise at the juncture of two ages."-Merrill, Athanasius Kircher, pp. 26-27. Fine copy. Isabel Rivers
Reason, Grace, and Sentiment
Cambridge University Press. New Hardcover NEW The period 1660-1780 saw major changes in the relationship between religion and ethics in English thought. In this first part of an important two-volume study, Isabel Rivers examines the rise of Anglican moral religion and the reactions against it expressed in nonconformity, dissent and methodism. Her study investigates the writings that grew out of these movements, combining a history of the ideas of individual thinkers (including both prominent figures such as Bunyan and Wesley and a range of lesser writers) with analysis of their characteristic terminology, techniques of persuasion, literary forms and styles. The intellectual and social milieu of each movement is explored, together with the assumed audiences for whom the texts were written. The book provides an accessible, wide-ranging and authoritative new interpretation of a crucial period in the development of early modern religious and moral thought.

HOWELL, JAMES
Lexicon tetraglotton, an English-French-Italian-Spanish dictionary! With another volume of the choicest proverbs!
London, 1660-[59]. First edition, folio, engraved frontispiece after W. Faithorn, title printed in red and black, text primarily in triple column; entry words in English throughout; a pleasing copy in full contemporary calf, unrestored; gilt spine, red morocco label; with the half-title (also printed in red and black); some cracking of joints at the extremities, the whole a bit scuffed and rubbed, sections of the text significantly spotted, but generally a good, sound copy. In addition to the proverbs, the book contains prefatory poems on language, a 6-p. note "To the tru philologer," and many separate sections at the back giving terminology in a number of specific jargons: i.e. anatomy, horsemanship, hunting and venery, military, nautical, architecture and "household stuff", among others. Howell (?1594-1666) was an accomplished linguist and historiographer to Charles II (see DNB for a long description of his sometimes checkered career). Besides being one of the first Englishmen to earn a livelihood out of literature, he possessed a rare mastery of the modern languages, including his native Welsh. In addition to this polyglot, Howell issued a revised edition of Cotgrave's French-English Dictionary in 1650; A New English Grammar for Foreigners (1662); and a posthumously published French grammar (1673).       Cambridge University Press. New Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. The main contribution of the work is to offer a comprehensive history of the English East India Company during the century 1660-1760. It also examines the commercial economy of the Asian countries in which the Company traded and its political relations with Asian princes. Finally, it is a study of business and economic decision-making under pre-modern conditions. The book is based on an extensive analysis of the quantitative and qualitative material available in the Company's archives. The data-processing of the quantitative evidence and its subsequent statistical analysis was carried out on a computer, and the book contains comprehensive tables on the volume and value of the Company's trade, prices of commercial goods, and on monetary and financial history. The extensive scope of the book and its consideration not only of the Company but of the economies in which it operated make it essential reading for all concerned with the economic history of the period, both of Europe and Asia. The techniques used in analysing the original data and their theoretical framework make it of methodological interest to economic historians. ISBN10: 0521031591.
