Nicolosi, J.B
Continentem Dudum Notam Comporebat Joa Baptista Nicolosius
|
Nicolosi, J.B. Continentem Dudum Notam Comporebat Joa Baptista Nicolosius. Paris 1660. Interesting and important Eastern Hemisphere map that includes Tasman's discoveries before they were widely publicized in the Dutch maritime atlases. It shows an accurate representation of the west coast of Arnhemland and of Van Diemen's Land. Interestingly, it retains a 2nd north coast of Australia, that of Marco Polo's "Beach." "Beach" has been modified to allow inclusion of discoveries made on Nuyt's voyage of 1627.

Mark S. Dawson
Gentility and the Comic Theatre of Late Stuart London
|
Cambridge University Press. Please note that deliveries to addresses in the UK and Europe will be in 4-14 business days. Other countries should refer to Alibris standard times. Where Adam delved and Eve span Who was then the gentleman? Mark Dawson's approach to this riddle is not to study the lives of those said to belong to early modern England's gentry. He suggests we remain skeptical of all answers to this question and consider what was at stake whenever it was posed. We should conceive of gentility as a mutable process of social delineation. Gentility was a matter of power and language; cultural definition and social domination. Neither consistently defined nor applied to particular social groups, gentility was about identifying society's elite. The book examines how gentility was portrayed through plays at London's theatres (1660? ? ? 1725). Employing a rich assembly of sources, comedies with their cits and fops, periodicals, correspondence of theatre patrons and polemic from its detractors, Dawson revises several of social history's conclusions about the gentry and offers new interpretations to students of late Stuart drama. The work is divided into 4 main parts. The first part is devoted to the mammals and illustrated with numerous beautifully designed animals on 80 plates, including a unicorn. The second part treats the fishes with numerous illustrations of all kinds of fishes on 48 plates, one more than in the first Latin edition, depicting the sea unicorn, with an extra leaf of explanatory text added as well. To this part a sub-part on other sea-animals, like shell-fishes, polyps, etc. is added, with 20 plates. The third part is devoted to the birds, beautifully illustrated on 62 plates. The fourth and last main part then treats insects, including butterflies, with numerous specimen depicted on 28 plates, and to this part again a sub-part is added on snakes and dragons, illustrated on 12 plates. 8vo. Two pages, approximately 100 words, in part: "Unless you have contemplated other arrangements, I should like to reserve my lunch hour for friends or other engagements in Boston as I cannot foresee just how my time may be occupied with them." His intentions were here imparted to John Codman Ropes (1836-1899), also a military historian, published the influential Campaign of Waterloo and a number of volumes on the American Civil War.
|
Paris:: Antoine Bertier. 1660. hardcover. 2. Large 4to. [20], 628, [26] pp. Engraved frontis., red and black title-page with large printer!s device. Contemporary full brown mottled calf, raised bands, gilt-stamped spine panels and title; front hinge beginning to split, cords holding firm, extremities scratched, corners showing. Contemporary ink ownership marks on title-page. Very good. . FIRST EDITION. This history of Cardinal Richelieu is by the French historian Antoine Aubery. The son of a Parisian landlord, Aubery became a lawyer in the French Parliament. Very scholarly, he was one of the official writers and apologists to the Court of France in the 18th century. Aubery was the author of many historical works, including Histoire generale des cadinaux (1642) and Memoires pour servir a l!histoire du cardinal duc de Richelieu (1660). The fine, large (305 x 218 mm) engraved frontispiece of Richelieu was executed by Aegid [Giles] Rousselet (1610-1686). The Cardinal de Richelieu was often known by the title of the King!s !Chief Minister! or !First Minister!. As a result, he is sometimes considered to be the world!s first Prime Minister, in the modern sense of the term. He sought to consolidate royal power and crush domestic factions. By restraining the power of the nobility, he transformed France into a strong, centralized state. His chief foreign policy objective was to check the power of the Austro-Spanish Habsburg dynasty. Although he was a cardinal, he did not hesitate to make alliances with Protestant rulers in attempting to achieve this goal. His tenure was marked by the Thirty Years! War that engulfed Europe. Richelieu was also famous for his patronage of the arts; most notably, he founded the Academie Francaise, the learned society responsible for matters pertaining to the French language. Richelieu is also known by the sobriquet l!Eminence rouge (!the Red Eminence!), from the red shade of a cardinal!s vestments and the style !eminence! as a cardinal. CAMPANI, Giuseppe.
"This little book is of particular interest, not on the account of the silent clocks, but because it describes the accidental invention by the author of a pendulum as applied to a clock, and adduces some evidence on the question of Huygens' priority in the application of the pendulum. (...) In trying different arrangements of balance, Giuseppe lenghtened the arms of the balance and attached by wax two leaden weignts at their ends. While he was watching the action, the upper weight fell off, leaving only the lower weight and, to his astonishment, the clock containued to work, with the balance out of equilibrium; further he found the going extremely regular. He then showed the clock to his brother, who remarked that it was a great invention, discovered accidentally, applicable to all kinds of clocks, and that it was in fact the pendulum discovered by Galileo Galilei for measuring accurately the time in his celestial observations. (...) I feel not doubt that Giuseppe did discover the application of a pendulum to a clock, without knowledge of Huygens' recent work." (Baillie). Weil, Catalogue 29 n°23 : "of legendary rarity" (probably this copy). Baillie, Clocks and watches, An historical bibliography pp. 59-60. Josef Köstlbauer: Quellenautopsie "Martin Meyer (1659)", in: Europabegriffe und Europavorstellungen im 17. Jahrhundert. Interneteintrag].

TREATISE ON SELF-DENYALL.
|
London Printed for Robert White, for Nevil Simmons Bookseller in Kederminster 1660, First Edition Hardcover Poor condition [lxviii], 339 pages of text. Full leather binding in poor condition: Inexpertly rebacked, with cracked and peeling to boards with several pieces of leather lacking. The first 28 pages (14 leaves) of the un-numbered preliminary section are damaged at the top edge with loss. About 15% of the title page is lacking, and the percentage reduces with each page; it appears to be some sort of gouging, or it could be old vermin damage. With the exception of one page with an illegible name written in the margin, the remainder of the text is quite clean and attractive.

Cioranescu, XVII, 42386.
