VEEN, Jan van der.
A pharmacist turned into a famous poet Zinne-Beelden, oft Adams Appel. Mitsgaders Syne oude ende nieuwe ongemeene Bruydt-lofs ende Zege-zangen.
|
Amsterdam, Everhard Cloppenburgh, 1642. - 4to. 19th century fullgrained red morocco, spine with raised bands with finely gilt stamped decoration, geometrically gilt stamped panel on sides with finely gilt stamped ornaments, and the gilt stamped armorial supra-libros of the Earl of Spencer in center, richly gilt inner dentelles, fully gilt edges, gauffered at borders and corners. With large emblematic engraving on title, and 50 full-page engraved emblems by S. Savry. (24), 523 (1 blank) pp. Rare first edition of Jan van der Veen's famous emblembook, to which his popular songbook, enlarged with new songs, is added. The book is dedicated to the magistrates of the city of Deventer in the eastern Netherlands, where the poet lived and kept a pharmacy, probably also running a grocery-store. The beautiful large emblems, here in first impressions, by the sensitive artist Salomon Savry, or Saverij (Amsterdam 1594-1678), all have a two-lined motto in Dutch above and in French below. Emblem XIV is mounted in correction as it should be in the first edition. The present first edition is the only one with French text, and the only one in quarto. The book was republished till the middle of the 18th century, but all in octavo. Beautiful copy with a great provenance, in special binding of the famous library of the Earl of Spencer, and with the book-label of Althorp.- (Binding sl. rubbed at corners). Landwehr 842; Praz pp. 522-523; De Vries 167; Scheurleer, Liedboeken, p. 156; Hollstein XXIV, 181; Nagler 30. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Leeuwarden, Gijsbert Sybes, 1642. - Den sesten druck. 4to. Contemp. vellum. With title within richly engraved allegorical borders, by J. van Meurs, and full-page engraved portrait of the author by W. de Geest after Jonas Suyderhoef. (32), 498, (22, 2 blank) pp. Sixth revised and enlarged edition, in the rare quarto format, of one of the most popular Dutch 17th century schoolbooks on classical history, and at the same time intended for the general public too. The book is divided into 43 chapters, and each chapter again into about 30 lessons, devoted to the best and most glorious acts of great men from classical history, not only of emperors and marshals, but also of philosophers and artists, each lesson always including 10 or 12 proverbs or wise sayings to be learned by heart. Thus, the book combined the two elements most valued at the time to educate children, examples of great men and proverbs. Franciscus Heerman (1610-ca.1670), was born in Friesland, studied at Wittenberg in Germany, and afterwards worked as a lawyer in Amsterdam. His book, the only one known from his hand, was first published at Amsterdam in 12mo in 1634, and was numerous times republished, a 30th edition still being published in 1715. Mainly published in small octavo, the present quarto edition, with its fine engraved title and the large engraved portrait is the most rare. Anna Roemer Visscher in one of her poems praised Heerman for his erudition and wisdom. Good copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed; old owner's ms. entries on endpapers, library stamp on half-title; few small imperfections). Muller 383: "Weinig Nederlandsche boeken zijn zóo populair geweest"; Scheepers II, 755: "De 4o-uitgaaf is zeldzaam"; Sale Cat. J.L. Beijers, Jan. 1959 (Coll. Printed at London. 1642 - 4to [8]p. Full modern calf, sponge patterned, with blind stamped decoration, spine titled in gilt. The Bradley Martin copy with bookplate. A very good copy. First edition. Wing T530. Rare; this is the only copy to have appeared at auction in the last 20 years. John Taylor, (1589-1653) the Water Poet. Walker gained the epithet "ironmonger" from an early apprenticeship, however he was drawn into journalism and preaching and through both means he propagated his anti-episcopal message. He printed numerous "seditious and scandalous libels" and in 1644 became involved in the periodical press, being responsible for many short-lived but influential titles, including Occurrences of Certain Speciall and Remarkable Passages, 1644 and subsequently Perfect Occurrences. "During 1642 Walker engaged in a pamphlet exchange with John Taylor, who repeatedly stigmatized him as an ignoramus ironmonger and a scandalous preacher. Walker's contemporary notoriety was chiefly as a newsbook editor, perhaps second only to Marchmont Nedham in prominence." (ODNB) In relation to the printing of seditious literature, Taylor accuses Walker of being the "chiefe or main stickler in this cause", and goes on to describe the setting-up of Walker's bookshop; "hee not having any word of God in his said shop above the bulke or size of a horne-booke". Taylor estimates that Walker's output must have been "4 or 500,000 of such pamphlets. by which means or doings, some hundred of thread-bare scribblers fell to the trade of scandalous writing, and news making.these scandalous fooleries (or knaveries) were of such attractive force and power, that they drew at least 500 vagrants and vagabonds from all the shires about London, and they were all suddenly metamorphis'd and transforme'd into wandering booksellers". Taylor discusses Walker's network of pamphlet distributors and goes on to relate various brushes with the law, including one incident where Walker, before a sojourn in Newgate prison, hides in an upholsterer's shop, escaping from the authorities on a boat down the Thames. Sumptibus Sebastiani Cramoisy et Gabrielis Cramoisy; Viduae Edmundi, 1642, 1684. Folio (35 x 23cm). Newly rebound in black cloth, gilt-lettered red morocco labels to spines. Previous owner's signatures and library stamps to title-pages. Greek and Latin text in parallel columns. Title-pages in black and red, with engraved printer's device. Chipping and some tears to original front and rear endpapers, v.3 lacks original ffep, piece torn off from ffep of v.2. Few worm holes. Volumes 1-4 were edited by Jacques Sirmond, S.J., published in 1642, and contain the works of Theodoret; volume 5 was edited by Jean Garnier, S.J., published in 1684, and contains supplements to the first 4 volumes, a biography of Theodoret and a dissertation "De libris Theodoreti" (both by Garnier), additional dialogues of Theodoret, a collation by Fulvius Ursinus (1529-1600) of citations used by Theodoret, several dissertations by Garnier: "De fide Theodoreti", "Critica de V. Synodo Generali", "De Theodoreti & orientalium causa"; and "Eutherii Tyanorum Episcopi Sermones", the sermons of Bishop Eutherius of Tyana, from the first complete edition of the works of Marius Mercator, edited by Garnier in 1673. These Sermons, says Garnier, had been falsely attributed to Theodoret by the Nestorians. Theodoret was an advocate of Nestorius, who was deposed and exiled at Ephesus in 431. He urged Nestorius not to reject the expression Theotokos and, to the end of his life, held that Nestorius never taught two persons in Christ. For this stance, Theodoret found much trouble with Cyril and the Alexandrines, though he appears to have been in good standing with Rome. At the Council of Chalcedon (451) he signed the anathema against Nestorius, though probably only in the sense of condemning the heresy imputed to him. Jacques Sirmond, S.J., (1559-1651) was one of the greatest scholars of the 17th century. He published several editions of Greek and Latin Christian writings. Jean Garnier, S.J., (1612-1681) was a noted patristic scholar and moral theologian. He is known particularly for his...

Arist. 1643, pp. (8), 70, (1 f. bianco). In octauum librum physicorum. 1643, pp. (8), 139, (1). In libro de Coelo. 1647, pp. (12), 140; in libros Meteorologicos. 1647, pp. (8), 36. In lib. de ortu et interitu. 1643 pp. (8), 176. In tres libros Aristotelis de Anima. 1643, pp. (8), 142, (2). DSB II.12-14: “He was not aware of the implications of his own corpuscular philosophy or the importance of universal mechanism”. Cfr. CHECCHINI DEGAN, Nuovi studi su Claude Beauregard. Padova 1971 [10019] 11. Checchini Degan, Nuovi studi su Claude Beauregard. Padova 1971

Diatribae. Discourses on Divers Texts of Scripture: Delivered upon Severall Occasions. Bound with Diatribae. Or, a Continuation of Certain Discourses on Sundry Texts of Scripture: Delivered upon Severall Occasions
|
London: John Clark 1642 1648, 1st editions. (Leatherbound) Very good. (8), 1-335, (4), 241-527p. Early full leather binding with a few bruises, 3" tear upper front joint / hinge, shelf wear. Contents quite tight and clean with a few signatures starting. With the errata page. Wing 1596 & 1597. Wing 1597 identifies the second part as a second edition, when in fact it is a different publication with a largely similar title. Pagination of the second (1648) publication starts with page 241 and stops at page 527. Within these pages is found at 469 an additional title page also dated 1648 and titled "The Christian Sacrifice, or, the Solemne Worship in the Eucharist: Foretold by the Prophet Malachi, Taught by our blessed Savior, and Practised by the Primitive Church". The table of contents for the second volume agrees with the contents, but offers no explanation why pagination starts with page 241. Both volumes complete. See the Dictionary of National Biograpy for an extensive article on Mede (using the alternative spelling of Mead).

These fourteen important works by Erasmus - the edition of his most important letters after a 'Vita', edited by Petrus Scriverius, his famous 'Laus stultitiae', and three of his linguistic works in the first volume, and nine theological works in volume 2 - belong to a project of the Leiden publisher, printer and bookseller Joannes Maire (1603-1657). This project that can be seen as a series of editions of Erasmus's collected works, ensured Maire's reputation through the ages. 23 different volumes appeared between 1641 and 1652. It has long been thought that Petrus Scriverius was the editor, but now there is proof that in fact Willem Henricus Vorstius, a learned Remonstrant minister in the village of Warmond (near Leiden), did the job (Breugelmans, p. 24).Eleven violumes came out in 1641 (5 of which in the present collection); two in 1642 (one present), three in 1643 (2 present), one in 1644 (present), three in 1645 (one present), one in 1648 (present), one in 1649 (present), one in 1650 (present), and two in 1652 (present).

Obra rara, desconocida a Nicolás Antonio. Procedencia: 1. Livraria Fernin Liboa, etiqueta en guarda. 2. Bernardino Ribeiro de Carvalho, supra-libris.Referencias: Palau 218680; Salvá 860; Maggs, Spanish Books 1927, 736; Monteverde 4049; Fernando Palha, 1123

SCHONBORN Georg
Politicorum libri septem. Editio ad ipsius authoris emendatum exemplar nunc primum vulgata.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Good copies bound in two thick volumes with ownership's entry on the first titles: 'F.J. Odri' and a library stamps of the Nordelbische Kirchenbibliothek, Hamburg (incl. 'Gelöscht' stamps). Breugelmans, Fac et spera. Joannes Maire (2003), p. 24, 1642:7, 1649:3, 1648:3A, 1643:4-5, 1641:3B, 1641:4B, 1641:10B, 1641:11A; 1644:2, 1645:4, 1652:3, 1652:2; Overzicht werken Erasmus (Rotterdam 1936), 556 (=6), 663 (=4), 671 (=5), 934 (=2), 990 (=3), 1033 (=10), 1340 (=11), 1345 (=12), 1347 (=13), 1350 (=14); Van der Haeghen I, 182 (=1), 118 (2), 124 (3), 75 (4), 242 (=5), 7 (=6), 167 (=7), 73 (=8), 121 (=9), 160 (=10), 162 (=11-14).
